Back it Up (118) continues to progress, this time taking the scalp of consistent Good Source (116) at the West and North Norfolk. He’s a through stayer and needed to be pushed along in the early stages but conquering Fakenham’s turns and undulations provided a useful training ground for Stratford and he would be an interesting contender for the John Corbett -should he take his chance.
Back it Up comes from the powerful David Kemp yard but in total contrast Unexpected Edge (102), winner of Division 2 of the Maiden at the Curre & Llangibby, hails from a one horse stable – that of Dean Coleman who trains at Narberth in Pembrokeshire. A very lightly raced eight year old , Unexpected Edge is out of a winner of a listed Irish bumper and may well be able to follow up before the season is out.
Go on Chez (106) was first noted in this column back in 2021 following a fast time win at Knutsford where he defeated none other than Sin Nomine into second place. He has been plying h is trade under Rules since then, reaching the placings in 65% of his starts and totting up six wins. He recorded a useful if not outstanding figure on his return to the Hunter chase ranks when scoring at Ludlow but was previously rated in the 130’s under Rules and would be an interesting contender for other similar races this season.
The improving ground conditions are allowing the faster, flat-bred sorts to come to the fore. Mini Fortune (105) is one such horse, the daughter of Soldier of Fortune making all to run out a wide margin winner of the Restricted at Ystradowen. She is improving rapidly and although there was little in the way of opposition here, she looks well capable of adding to her tally.
The remarkable Ninth Wave (118) put arguably the best performance of his career when beating Sixteen Letters (118) at the Axe Vale. The ten year old has now won ten of his twenty-one starts between the flags and, with his beloved Bratton Down on the horizon, might even have a squeak at landing the season’s most winning horse title.

Parham races enjoyed some exciting finishes as a large crowd enjoyed the spring sunshine on Saturday. The first race of the day was the Intermediate with five runners facing the starter and all five runners were in contention as they approached the penultimate fence. Approaching the final fence the race was between the two betting market favourites, Horizon d’Ainey and Mount Pleasant with Our Brother John also pressing the leaders. All three took the final fence well and then the battle was on to reach the finishing line first and it was Mount Pleasant and Alex Chadwick who managed to get themselves to the front to win by two lengths from Horizon d’Ainey whilst Our Brother John was third. Monmouth Hill came home in fourth ahead of Buffalo Sabre who also completed.
The maiden race followed with six runners declared. Spaghetti Pete and Windgap Hill were the market favourites, however Windgap Hill was a faller at fence four (the open ditch) and brought down Del Amitir which reduced the field to four with Alan Hill trained Barry Scott leading the way. As the four runners headed down the back straight for the final time, Barry Scott was still in command whilst Marching Mason was starting to struggle and was pulled up before the third fence from home. At the penultimate fence Barry Scott ridden by Izzie Marshall, continued to lead but Spaghetti Pete was hot on his heels, but despite having led most of the way, Barry Scott was able to pull clear approaching the final fence and ran away to be a cosy winner beating Spaghetti Pete by ten lengths. Elder Statesman also completed to take third.
The ladies open saw five runners come under starters orders and again all five runners were tightly grouped and in contention until they disappeared into
the dip towards fence fifteen. As the runners came back into view towards the penultimate fence, three runner, Monkey Puzzle, Count Simon and Imperial Acolyte were side by side and racing hard towards the finish. Monkey Puzzle was trying to reassert himself over Count Simon at the final fence but hit the top of the fence and was a faller which left Count Simon a couple of lengths clear of Imperial Acolyte who battled on the run to the winning post but Count Simon managed to keep his advantage to secure the victory for local trainer Rob Varnham and provide Izzie Marshall with a double on the day. Go Whatever and Right Hand of God had their own battle for third place with Go Whatever coming out on top.
Rob Varnham trained his second winner of the day in the following owner-trainer conditions race as Ripper Roo justified favouritism to take the victory. He tracked the early leaders Kilfords Queen and Thomas Junior until moving to the lead heading towards the penultimate fence. Hyberry was the only runner able to try to go after Ripper Roo, but he was not able to get close and finished seven lengths second. Kilfords Queen came home in third, completing for the first time for his trainer / jockey Hannah West whilst Thomas Junior took third.
The men’s open saw the largest field of the day with eight runners. Alex Chadwick aboard Red Maple was looking for a double and was sent off the bookies favourite whilst Rob Varnham was looking for a trainers treble with Trappist Monk also popular in the betting market. However it was Reikers Island from Alan Hill’s yard who took the victory. Having last run at Aintree in the Foxhunters Chase where he pulled up, Reikers Island was friendless in the betting market and was sent off at
12/1. But similarly to Izzie Marshall in the maiden on Barry Scott, Reikers Island led from the fall of the flag to the winning post. Trappist Monk and Definite Dilemma trained by Ella Gillings were both trying to challenge at the penultimate fence, where Definite Dilemma made a mistake and was relegated to third behind Trappist Monk. The leading pair took the final fence together, but Reikers Island, who was placed in a race over 3 miles 6 furlongs in mid-March showed his stamina and was able to hold off the challenge to win by a length. Definite Dilemma took third with red Maple in fourth. Wireless Operator was the only other finisher, as Southfield Royale unseated on the first circuit, Premier d’Troice pulled up at the thirteenth where Ballintara ran out.
The racing concluded with the restricted race which saw six runners declared. After an initial false start, Why Didn’t Ya refused to start reducing the field to five and this became a game of cat and mouse. Daniel Cherriman, looking for a double after his success on Reikers Island had Money Spinner prominent for the early part of the race but was challenged at the thirteenth fence by Cossack Dancer, Penniless and Russian Invasion who had made the long trip from Devon. At the fifteenth fence, the race was between Money Spinner, Cossack Dancer and Russian Invasion as Penniless could find no more and the three battled side by side to the penultimate fence. Money Spinner was the first to weaken and heading to the final fence Russian Invasion opened up a two length advantage over Cossack Dancer. A safe jump secured the victory for Russia Invasion whilst Money Spinner was able to rally to take second ahead of Cossack Dancer. Penniless also completed in fourth whilst Highland Glory pulled up on the final circuit.
SATURDAY 27TH APRIL 2024
By Alison MorrisIt was a busy afternoon at Stafford Cross near Seaton, Devon, for the Axe Vale Harriers fixture with a total of 69 runners facing the starter for seven races.
The Ed and Tim Vaughan juggernaut continued to roll on Saturday’s meeting at Ystradowen. Hot on the heels of his first win on a course proper the sixteen-year-old wonder boy proceeded to claim five of the seven available races. It was an impressive twenty-four hours, and you definitely get the feeling that it’s not over yet.
Victory was denied of Ed in the opener however, the Llangeinor Pentyrch Hunt Members race. The laurels went to David Brace’s grand old campaigner Pink Eyed Pedro. The home bred thirteen-year-old by Dr Massini stood for a number of years at the Brace’s Dunraven Stud, and has carried his owner’s Black and Red colours to victory on eleven occasions between the flags and on another five under rules. The gelding, whilst talented, is also temperamental and proved a challenge to saddle in the horsebox. Under rules he will only tolerate one person in the saddling box with him and the art of saddling him over the door has been perfected. They say that the best horses have idiosyncrasies, and this one certainly does. Ed Vaughan followed them on home on Siberian Star.
The next race, the PPORA Club Members race, saw the start of the Ed Vaughan domination as he steered his father’s State of Fame to victory. The eight-year-old, who started as odds on favourite, has been waiting for better ground throughout the wet winter having scored at Great Trethew back in November. Joanne Priest’s Western Cowboy took second spot.
It was disappointing to see a walkover for the Mixed Open contest and the organisers of the meeting had definitely fallen foul of the rescheduling of their postponed meeting. On their original date they would have been the only meeting in the planner, but with a full weekend of racing just gone and more meetings on the same weekend the runners had thinned out. The winner was not disappointed by this fact and Ed Vaughan took the spoils with Poli Roi who had been
victorious at the Howick meeting the previous weekend. It also left the door open for the Poliglote gelding to line up in a race proper and he went to the start in the next race, the Jockey Club Retraining of Racehorses Veteran Horse Conditions. All seemed well until a blunder three out that allowed the Luke Price trained First Preference to throw down a challenge but despite staying on well in the run in, the ten-year-old, who finished second in last years renewal of the Dunraven Bowl was held by a length. Dandy Dan was five lengths back in third.
The Clive Thomas Restricted race saw five go to post and it was a facile victory for the diminutive and aptly named Mini Fortune who came home forty lengths clear of her nearest rival Debacle. The daughter of Soldier of Fortune has certainly found her way in the hands of Luke Price, and this is her third success of the season. The mare also seems able to perform on any ground having previously won in the mud of Lydstep, on the quicker surface of Saturday’s meeting James King went well past the finish line as he attempted to pull up.
Normal service for the day was resumed when Ed Vaughan steered Getaway Cory to victory. Currently running in the colours of his father Tim, moves are afoot for the gelding to move to the yard of John Mathias for a group of owners. James King settled for second on this occasion on Luke Price’s Canyouseme wearing the colours of Martyn Griffiths that were made famous by his father, and Nortons Coin. Hedgehopper, carrying another set of familiar colours those of Shan and Ross Farr came home in third.
The final race proper was the JRL Group Point to Point Flat Race and this went the way of the Vaughans once more with Bells of Ufford whose pedigree looks better suited to a flat meeting race card than that of a point to point. The chestnut Galileo gelding scored by three and a quarter lengths, to the delight of his young rider, from Is Our Otis and Tommie O’Brien. Pink Eyed Pancho carried the David Brace colours home in third.
The day concluded with two fast and competitive Pony races which gave the crowd exciting finishes to round off the day.
James King winning the Restricted Race on Mini FortuneSATURDAY 27TH APRIL 2024
By Peter BurgonThe inaugural Overton Races Family Day fixture in aid of Kilbryde & St Andrew’s Hospices was a resounding success in the sunshine at Overton Farm on Saturday with the final sum raised boosted by £4,200 following the auction for a morning on the gallops and tour of the stables at Willie Mullins’ yard plus lunch for six. Amy Coltherd is the new leader of the Perth Racecourse-sponsored Northern Area Ladies Championship following her first double on stable companions Batman For Ever and Oscar Wilde, both trained by her father Stuart.
After a barren spell under Rules since completing a four-timer in France in 2021, Batman For Ever got his career back on track in the 3m M8 Recovery NPPA Area Conditions Race. Always up with pace and travelling strongly, the seven-year-old had a prolonged battle for the lead with market rival Hermann Clermont (John Dawson) from six out before asserting on the run-in to score a shade cosily in the end by a length.
A rejuvenated Oscar Wilde brushed aside a 3lb penalty when following up last week’s Corbridge victory in the valuable Kilbryde Hospice Mixed Open Race. Left in front by default two out when tiring long lime leader Rock On Harry was pulled up quickly by Pippa Brown, Coltherd’s mount coasted home eight lengths ahead of Fightfortheroses (Charlotte Tailford) in a fast time.
Last month’s Overton Maiden scorer Incisive dictated a modest pace in the JH Civil Engineering Restricted Race under Nick Orpwood and still had plenty left in the tank as he crossed the line five lengths in front of the promising Easter Glory (Paddy Barlow). Orpwood said: ‘’He was running with the choke out most of the way but I always knew there was plenty of horse under me.’’ The next assignment for Ronnie Bartlett’s six-year-old Crillon gelding, who had a racecourse gallop at Ayr the previous Sunday under Tony McCoy, is the 2m1f Point-toPoint Bumper at Aintree on May 17.
Orpwood and Lyall Hodgins are now joint leaders in the Hexham Auction Mart-sponsored Northern Area Mens Championship.
Northumbrian raiders Blouebrav and First One D’Ana had the 2m4f St Andrew’s Hospice Novice Riders Conditions Race between them from three out and, after jumping the last in unison, were still inseparable as they hit the line, and the announcement of a dead-heat was met with approval by both sets of connections.
First One D’Ana was a welcome first winner of the season for 41-year-old James Innes, while James Cookson-trained Blouebrav’s second course success means that daughter Natasha is 5pts behind Amy Coltherd in the Ladies Championship ahead of the concluding Haydon meeting at Hexham on May 18. Now trained at Mindrum by Nick Orpwood, First One D’Ana made his racecourse debut for Sean Thomas Doyle in a Leopardstown Juvenile Maiden Hurdle in December 2018 and subsequently had a spell under Rules for DJ Jeffreys before heading to North Northumberland. Orpwood thought the shorter trip and sounder surface had made a big difference.
James Cookson’s impressive record at the South Lanarkshire venue now reads 7 winners and 6 placed from 16 runners since February 2013.
Inviction turned the form book upside down with a first win for two years in the 3m M8 Recovery Conditions Race under his trainer Ross Wilson in the best time of the day. Still more than a length down at the last, the nineyear-old came with a late rattle to overhaul long-time leader Nick Lost (Natasha Cookson) near the finish and score by a length, with the consistent Bintheredonethat (Eloise JusticeVose) a further four lengths away in third.
This was a first winner for the recently launched Tweeddale Racing Club, and Wilson said: ‘’Quick ground makes all the difference. He has the ability but it all depends if he’s in the mood or not on the day.’’
Modder River landed the concluding 2m4f William P Mullins Maiden Race after being given a positive ride by Warwickshire-based multiple national ladies champion jockey Gina Andrews. Always prominent and travelling well in a strongly
run affair, the five-year-old edged in front down the back straight approaching five out and, after drawing four lengths clear on the home turn, was always doing enough in the closing stages to keep She Is The Enemy (Ross Wilson) at bay by a length, with Toucan Sam (William Hamilton) a further length away in third.
Home-bred by Skewsby-based Peter Maddison and trained by Jack Teal, the youngster appreciated a sounder surface on only his second start over fences and was a first winner sired by Forever Now. The win gave Maddison a special thrill and he recalled past successes with the likes of Minden Rose and Lothian Falcon. Minden Rose scored between the flags at Hornby Castle (April 1999), Alnwick (January 2000) and Cottenham (January 2002) before landing a 2m4f Newcastle Novices’ Hunters’ Chase in April 2002, while Lothian Falcon was one of the best he trained. He was a 5-time winner under Rules including the 2007 renewal of the Grade 3 Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase at Wetherby. Coincidentally on the corresponding day in 2008, Maddison was at Sandown Park where Lothian Falcon finished six-and-three-quarters-of-a-length 5th to Monkerhostin in the 3m5f bet365Gold Cup Handicap Chase.
Following the Overton fixture, the Northern Area continues to boast one of the highest ratios in the country of runners to individual horses entered (78.2%), while the average number of runners per race stands at a healthy 7.58.
As usual, the main action was preceded by pony racing. The 138cm contest was won by Mayday Black Mink (Jack Yardley) from Silver (Freya Ainslie) and Mohammed Ali (Cara Wilson), while The Cork Man (Cara Tuke) landed the 148 cm contest from Lucky June (Tara Kane) and Dino Royale (Robyn Coulson).
The Northern Area season concludes with the Haydon fixture at Hexham Racecourse on Saturday 18th May.
It was a busy afternoon at Stafford Cross near Seaton, Devon, for the Axe Vale Harriers fixture with a total of 69 runners facing the starter for seven races.
In form jockey Callum Pritchard rode two winners to take his seasonal total into double figures, whilst 16-year-old schoolboy Ed Vaughan capped a weekend to remember by adding another winning ride to add to his five successes (including one walk over) the previous day in Wales.
Ninth Wave continues on the upgrade and recorded his sixth win from his last seven races in the Mixed Open with a hard fought success over the useful Sixteen Letters and the favourite Hell Red in a 12-runner affair. The winner’s task was made easier when the well supported veteran Shantou Flyer gave Olive Nicholls a nasty fall when crashing through the wing of the sixth fence.
Hell Red still led turning into the straight but it was left to Ninth Wave (Callum Pritchard) and Sixteen Letters (Will Biddick) to fight out the finish with the gallant one-eyed 10-year-old Ninth Wave just prevailing.
Ninth Wave is trained by Teresa Clark for Peter and Kathy Musgrave with Kathy explaining, “He did well because everything was wrong really today. It was a bit softer than he likes and the course is the wrong way round for him. We didn’t give Callum any instructions as he gets on so well with him.”
The 23-year-old jockey, based with Philip Hobbs and Johnson White is facing a 14 day riding ban stemming from a National Hunt whip offence which kicks in on selected days. He is currently making the most of his opportunities however and completed a double on Sunday when John and Sonia Gardener’s Whitsand Bay defied a penalty, holding on well to beat Boys Will Be Boys (George Hiscock) in a good 13-runner Restricted. Eight-year-old Whitsand Bay had given Pritchard his first ever winner last April at Cotley Farm, sending him on his way to becoming the Mens’ Novice champion.
Whitsand Bay’s win took his trainer Josh Newman into the lead for the National trainers title, edging him just one ahead of Max Comley and Alan Hill.
Conections of Scoresby (left) & Moodofthemoment (right) celebrate their deadheat, Intermediate race
Ed Vaughan now has an unassailable lead in a quest to inherit the Mens’ Novice title this season, with Sunday’s Maiden winner Ringsend John beating 13 rivals in good style. This ex-Irish eight-year-old is stabled with Ed’s father Tim, who has saddled the vast majority of Ed’s winners. Pointing followers will recall Tim partnering over a century of winners himself. “He was a bit green for an older horse but I was very confident when we hit the front. He has plenty of ability,” said the young rider who turns 17 in August and was due back at his school desk preparing for A levels the next morning.
Ed Vaughan has as long way to go to fill Will Biddick’s shoes, and had to give best to him as his mount Maska du Morvan chased home odds-on favourite Moon Lady in the Mares and Fillies Maiden. Stuart Payne trains the Cattistock mare at Mosterton for The Tigers Racing Club and Biddick duly pounced on his eight opponents to win easing up. “She is smart, travelled well and jumped well,” was the champion jockey’s succinct remark.
19-year-old Luke Morris partnered his first winner on his seventh ride when David Pipe’s Moodofthemoment held on to dead heat in a desperate finish to the Intermediate. The Newton Abbot born rider has an eventing background and joined the Pipe yard almost a year ago after a spell with Polly Walker. It was good to see David on hand, emphasising his support for his novice riders, reflecting that his other young point to point jockey Conal Kavanagh had recently got off the mark in a Chepstow hunter chase on Castle Daragh.
Each of these young riders do all the work with these respective horses.
The other Intermediate dead-heater was Bob Butler’s Scoresby, himself a serial dead heater as ironically he had lost his maiden tag in the same way at Cotley Farm last year. Porlock born Rob David was enjoying his sixth career winner on the Harry Ryall trained gelding. “We might think about a Newton Abbot hunter chase,” said the Peckmoor, near Crewkerne based trainer.
The Leslie Jefford trained Walkin Out returned to form to win the Grass Roots Condition race in the colours of John Dorse, surviving a stewards enquiry into why her nearest rival Lakota Warrior had crashed through the wing of the last as the pair had come close together. The result was allowed to stand with the Anna Johnston ridden mare getting her head in front for the first time since winning a Cartmel hunter chase last May. “She comes alive in the spring with better ground and the sun on her back,” said Lisa Jefford.
The Hunt race also ended in controversy as the Josh Newman trained and ridden Important Notice inexplicably took the wrong course approaching the final fence when looking sure to win. Dorrells Pierji was the recipient of the prize, continuing the resurgence of the Dean Summersby yard and giving Darren Edwards his seventh winner of the season.

Roadworks have resulted in a road closure between the Wrangaton exit of A38 and the new roundabout at Kittaford Cross.
We recommend those travelling to Flete Park from the east (Exeter) should exit the A38 at Marley Head, taking the B3372 to South Brent and Avonwick. The B3372 takes you through South Brent and under the A38. After the underpass, turn left towards Avonwick. In Avonwick, turn right opposite the Avon Inn and continue to join up with the A3121 towards Ermington and Plymouth. This takes you to Ermington and the normal route to Flete Park. An extra 15-20 minutes is advised.
Having followed the diversions today we want to make it clear that it is significantly longer!! So please follow directions that you have already advertised if coming dowm from Exeter.
If you are travelling from the east (Exeter) the diversion signs will take you on a considerable detour towards Plymouth!
