POINTING PEOPLE: CHARLIE & GEORGE CASE
Gina and Jack Andrews are undoubtedly the highest profile siblings on the South Midlands pointing scene, but Charlie and George Case may soon have something to say about that. 24-year-old Charlie rode his first winners in 2017 and is currently enjoying his best season, and George, 21, made his debut between the flags last year and rode his first winner in March. Jake Exelby Zoomed with the brothers recently to find out more about their careers, what makes them tick… and fraternal rivalry.
Tell me about yourselves and your background in racing
Charlie: Our father Ben trains under rules. Our grandfather Robert started it all. He was involved at Fakenham – Dad’s from Norfolk – and our uncle Adam was chairman of the racecourse until last year
I had my first ride aged 16, coming fourth on Freddy Fox at Whitfield – I was only allowed one ride that season! The next year, David Allen (former owner of the Edgcote estate, where Ben trains) gave us Breaking the Bank and I couldn’t have asked for a better ride We won four out of six, he was champion South Midlands horse, and I was leading area novice. I then went to work for the Hills. I was pretty green, and Alan was a hard, but fair, jockey coach and gave me experience. I got to ride The Gunner Brady for the Cranfields and won two on him, which improved my riding. A couple of years ago, I got a phone call from
Michael Kehoe the week before I first rode Allo Allo for him at High Easter. We won, and I’ve ridden for him ever since. I owe a lot to that horse
That summer, I saw a job in New Zealand advertised on Facebook. I had nothing on, so went over there. Weight was an issue – I’m 11 stone and had to ride at 10st 3lb – but I had about 30 rides, two winners and about a dozen places. It’s a small scene and leading jockey Shaun Phelan got on everything good, so I kept finishing second to him! It was a good experience, hard work but enjoyable George: I’m not going there as there’s no chance of me getting down to 10-3!
Until I was 14, I had no interest in riding, but Paddy Barlow’s dad is Charlie’s godfather Paddy had a pony, Tiny Dancer, that he offered to me when he got too old for pony racing. I enjoyed it and haven’t stopped riding since. I rode Wisecracker in a charity race then had my first pointing mount on him at Kimble last season. I’ve ridden him at home since he was four or five and know him better than anyone He likes firm ground so will hopefully run a few times before the end of the year He’s aptly named – a wise old schoolmaster.
Charlie: You still managed to put him on the floor at Dingley!
George: Elmdale (his first winner) is owned by Phoebe Jones (nee Taylor), whose sister Verity rides out for Dad. Joe Stevenson, our head lad, normally rides for the Taylors, but he’d broken his shoulder, so they gave me the
BY JAKE EXELBY
ride at Garthorpe after Zac Baker had won on him at Brafield-on-the-Green. He’s a pleasure to ride and ran well again next time at Kimble
Will your sister Amelia follow the two of you into the saddle?
George: No, she’s got no interest unless she’s going to Cheltenham or Aintree!
Which other pointers would you most like to ride?
Charlie: I was discussing this with Zac and would say Kaproyale, as I’m fed up with seeing his backside! I’ve been placed behind him twice and driven Zac to the races both times. I told him, ‘I know that horse, but I’ve never seen the front of it.’
George: Grace A Vous Enki, who’s doing pretty well this season. Dad’s good friends with Matt Sheppard (whose wife Nickie trains the horse) – in fact, Matt and Stuart Edmunds are probably his only friends (!) – and James King thinks he’s one of the best pointers he’s ever ridden.
Which jockeys do you most admire?
George: Jack Andrews. He rode for Dad when he was a conditional, is very professional, has helped me a lot, and knows his pointing inside out.
Charlie: You’d be hard pushed to say anyone other than his sister Gina. She’s tough as nails and has a knack of riding winners even when it doesn’t look like she can.
on
#gopointing www.pointtopoint.co.uk 16
George
Wisecracker
What are your favourite courses?
George: I have to say Garthorpe Also, Edgcote, as I can walk there.
Charlie: I love a day out at Edgcote and one of my favourite days was when I rode my first winner there, on Aunty Joan. And Horseheath is a very fair track, big and galloping with competitive racing and nice ground.
What would you do if you were in charge of the sport?
Charlie: I’d increase the number of wins before you’re no longer a novice rider Five winners isn’t enough experience and, the longer you stay a novice, the more chance you have of outside rides. When you’re not one, it’s hard to go up against the likes of Jack and James and it took me years to start picking up rides for new trainers. Tom Hutsby could have the same issues if he loses his novice status this year I like the Grass Roots riders races, as they give you the chance to ride against other similar riders and it’s easier to pick up spares. I rode in one at Higham recently
George: I’d get rid of bumpers. They take horses away from Maiden races and we want to increase the number of British pointers being bought, but bumper winners don’t seem to achieve anything.
Where do you see the future of point-topointing?
Charlie: I’d love to carry on riding and get on an upward trajectory, but I don’t know how long pointing’s got left. Hunting’s being closed down and there are more restrictions on the whip, so I can’t see it lasting forever.
George: If Labour gets in, hunting’s gone, and hunting funds pointing. I hope there’s a way of keeping the sport going without hunting, but it would be expensive to fund.
What would you do if you weren’t involved with horses?
George: I don’t think my life won’t involve racing. I’d like to get a joint-licence with Dad one day – in the winter and spring of the 2022-season I was pupil assistant to Anthony
and Sam Freedman in Melbourne
Charlie: He’d probably be a binman! As for me, I’ve got a degree in Real Estate from Oxford Brookes University, so – if I wasn’t riding – I’d probably be halfway to being qualified as a valuer That’s definitely in the background.
What hobbies do you have outside racing?
George: Not a lot. I’m obsessed with racing and probably watch more of it than anyone else! And I’m a Northampton Saints (rugby to the uninitiated) fan – I’ve been several times this season.
Charlie: That’s just because he gets to take his girlfriend out once a week! Her cousin plays for the team and Fin Smith (Northampton and England fly half) was in the year below me at school.
I play a lot of cricket – I’m an all-rounder and do it for fun but play for a local club I’ve come up against Joe Hill – there’s a lot of rivalry there, and we’re very competitive. I had county trials for Northamptonshire and Warwickshire when I was younger

What about music, films, and TV?
George: Morgan Wallen, who sings new country I saw him in Melbourne and he’s playing Hyde Park this summer
Charlie: We have similar tastes in music. I like Zach Bryan and Johnny Cash – I Hung My Head is my favourite song of his. As for TV, Friday Night Dinner
George: My favourite film is Fury On TV, I like Peaky Blinders. Anything with aggression, really – I like a good war film! Oh, and Racing TV or Sky Sports Racing.
What’s your brother’s best quality?
George on Charlie: Chatting up women, although he hasn’t got a girlfriend at the moment!
Charlie on George: For someone who didn’t do well at school, he’s sharp He makes you laugh with his funny comments.
And what irritates you most about him?
George on Charlie: He’s got verbal diarrhoea! Charlie on George: He’s never wrong. Even if he says he’s put a rug on a horse, he hasn’t done it!
What’s the daftest thing he’s ever done?
George on Charlie: There are a lot to choose from, so I can’t say.
Charlie on George: That makes me sound feral! I agree, there are too many. How would you describe him?
George on Charlie: Determined, aggressive, agricultural! Nobody wants to win in a finish more than him.
Charlie on George: He’s growing on me! It’s nice to have him pointing. I was having a torrid day at Larkhill when he rode his first winner and tried to call him four or five times. When he finally answered, I said, ‘So you’ve finished with all your fans. Just because you’ve had a winner, it doesn’t mean you can tell me how to ride!”

REPORTS
FLEET PARK RACESDARTMOOR FOXHOUNDS
SATURDAY 20TH APRIL 2024
By Granville Taylor
With eight Area fixtures lost since January due to waterlogging, it was quite a relief to be greeted by wall to wall sunshine at the scenic Flete Park venue on Saturday (April 20th) where the racecourse was in pristine condition.
The car parks were packed and a total of 69 runners for the seven races gave racegoers plenty to enthuse about.
The highlights were a treble for jockey Callum Pritchard and a training double for Danielle Kenealy
Five-year-old Prophesea continued on his upward curve, following up his Exeter bumper win with a workmanlike performance in winning the 13-runner Bartons Solicitors Restricted. Sue Trump’s promising gelding gave his backers a scare as he fluffed the last, but Pritchard’s mount produced a fine turn of foot to collar Fine Investment (Myles Osborne) in the shadow of the post. “He was a bit buzzy today and was trying to get away from me He hit the last but quickened well”, said the jockey Trainer Leslie Jefford remarked “He has done really well for a young horse (he also won the Cotley Maiden Conditions) so we might put him away for now”.
All Night Parking has been knocking at the door all season and gained a deserved success under Callum Pritchard in the two and a half miles Luscombe May Maiden. Owned and trained by George Beilby, the six-year-old Sholokov gelding was given a copybook ride, finishing with a flourish to catch the favourite Badbury Rings inside the last 100 yards.
The four miles Mixed Open for the Lord Mildmay Cup sponsored by PKF Francis Clark saw veteran pointer The King’s Writ doing all the hard work out in front. Josh Newman’s mount had already given best however to the stout stayer From The Heart when he came down at the last The winner is trained by Laura Jones for owner Sarah Spottiswoode and found this easier than his latest assignment in the Cheltenham festival race the true pointing fans know as the Foxhunters Chase
From The Heart was also following up last year’s success in this Flete Park event and will probably head back for the Ladies’ four
miler at the May meeting here. “This horse has some ability and appreciated the better ground,” reported 23-year-old Callum Pritchard, based with Philip Hobbs and Johnson White, and clocking up his ninth pointing winner of the season.
The Danielle Kenealy trained Young Wolf (Will Biddick) finished runner up to From The Heart, but her Stoodleigh yard went on to claim a brace of winners. Skilful Lord took the Totnes and Bridgetown Co Grass Roots Conditions race run in memory of Artemis Morgan under a patient ride from Rian Corcoran. Held up early, the gelding crept stealthily through the field before striding clear going to the last. “He was going so well with a circuit to go and I didn’t want to get there too soon,” reported the young jockey, who was enjoying his fourth winner in his first season’s race riding. Running in the colours of Brian Palfrey, the sturdy Skilful Lord is a real old fashioned point-to-pointer When I enquired why his seasonal debut was delayed the trainer replied, “Brian hunts him all season and he can’t run until his owner has finished hunting him.” Food for thought against the modern qualification scenario
The Kenealy stable double was completed as Michael Sweetland’s Punches Cross was given a positive front running Will Biddick
Runners in the Conditions (Level 2) For Grass Roots Riders
ride to win the Full Circle Motors Area Conditions race run in memory of Elizabeth May. The winner’s only blemish was hitting the 11th fence, and he always looked like holding the late challenge of Joey Steel (Martin McIntyre) “He came to us from Jonjo O’Neill and needed sweetening up He wants better ground,” reported the trainer
15 faced the starter in the Charles Stanley Wealth Managers three miles Maiden with Martin “Fly” McIntyre gaining consolation as he drove the Myles Osborne trained fiveyear-old Top Man Tom home ahead of 3-1 favourite Free The Lion (Jack Stenhouse). “I begged Myles to bring him here after his unlucky run at Cotley last week. He jumped well and settled nicely on the outside out of danger,” said the Irish born jockey who had reached his career century of point-topoint winners on Easter Monday.
The familiar Frost colours were seen to good effect in the eight - runner Hunt race sponsored by SW Law & Finance when the nine-year-old maiden Demothi drew away from Norman Abu and the favourite Broadclyst in the closing stages. The 68 rated hurdler had needed a search party for his efforts under rules, but found his niche here under 21-year-old James Shaw, who works for the Lucy Gardner yard, and was partnering his second career winner

THE TYNEDALE HUNT
SATURDAY 20TH APRIL 2024
By Peter Burgon
The weather gods were smiling on the Downhills course near Corbridge on Saturday for the rescheduled Tynedale Point-to-Point Races which took place on ground universally considered by the jockeys to be the best they had encountered in the North this season.
Malton-based jockey/trainer Jack Teal enjoyed one of the best days of his career with a skilfully executed treble on Macavity, Ira Hayes and Kalypso’chance.
First-time blinkers worked the oracle with Macavity, the outsider of four in the RBC Brewin Dolphin Men’s Open Race. Always going well behind the pace-setting Slanelough (Philip Greaves), Teal’s mount took it up three out before drawing clear up the home straight to score by seven lengths in the best time of the day.
The winner looked an exciting prospect two years ago when scoring at Sheriff Hutton and Corbridge before landing an Aintree Bumper but failed to fire under Rules last season when switched to Jedd O’Keeffe’s Leyburn yard Back in calmer waters, Teal knew three weeks ago after a piece of work on Richard Fahey’s gallops that he was spot on and just had to wait for better ground. His half-brother Walton Street accumulated career earnings in excess of £740,000 from Charlie Appleby’s yard with his seven wins including the Grade 1 Canadian International Stakes at Woodbine in September 2021.
Teal doubled up on debutant Ira Hayes in the 3m Cavu Corporate Finance Maiden Race. In the leading trio from the off, the five-year-old was sent to the front three out and produced an impressive turn of foot approaching the last to win by six lengths from well-backed favourite Kilmore Rock (Joe Wright) in what should prove to be an above average contest.
The winner, who was bought for 21,000 euros at Goffs Land Rover Sale in June 2022, had been doing everything right at home and his next assignment is likely to be a return visit to the Sales. The runner-up had finished third on debut at Lingstown in December behind Going Live and Califet En Vol who were sold a fortnight later at Tattersalls Cheltenham Sale for £150,000 and £145,000 respectively Coincidentally, Califet En Vol also ran on
Saturday and boosted the Lingstown form when finishing a close third in a Class 2 Ayr Bumper from Nicky Henderson’s yard
Fellow debutant Kalypso’chance, owned by former jump jockey Roger Marley, was in receipt of 14lb from his main rivals in the 2m4f Fires In Stone Maiden Race and the four-year-old found another gear from two out to beat oddson favourite Trust Me Nate (John Dawson) by twelve lengths. Teal’s only other riding treble came at Dalton Park in March 2020
Venetia Thompson, 21, who has been competing on the British Eventing circuit since May 2018 up to 2* level at venues such as Blair Castle, Alnwick Ford, Belsay and Burgham, made a winning debut between the flags on the Tom Sowerby-trained gelding Lucky Lucarno in the Izibella Welch Conditions Race for Novice Riders. In the first two from the outset with Supremely Lucky (Natasha Cookson), the evergreen twelve-year-old jumped superbly and kept his rivals at bay from four out to score by two lengths from odds-on favourite Bintheredonethat (Eloise Justice-Vose).
Thompson, who works part-time for Rebecca Menzies, said: ‘’He’s a legend of a horse and I wasn’t expecting that at all. The pace was much faster than eventing and he definitely appreciated being back on better ground.’’
Bought privately in 2022 from Cheshire handler Martin Wanless, this was a second training success for Tom Sowerby who is based near Darlington. Sowerby also provided Lyall Hodgins with his first winner on Big Sound at Duncombe Park in February 2020
Despite not jumping quite as fluently as he did when winning at Overton last month, Eagles Rock (John Dawson) continued his rise up the ladder with a comfortable follow-up victory in the Jan Mitchell Properties Conditions Race. In a strongly run affair, Dawson didn’t panic when Henry’s Regime (Nick Orpwood) quickened twelve lengths clear five out and, after reeling in the leader approaching the last, drew right away up the run-in to score by eight lengths.
Following a string of placed efforts since scoring at Alnwick in January 2023, Oscar Wilde got back on the winning trail in the Womble Bond Dickinson Ladies Open Race. Always close up, Amy Coltherd’s mount stayed on strongly from two out to beat Ask Cory (Chloe McHattie) by four lengths and is set to make a quick reappearance at Overton on Saturday with Coltherd now in contention for the Perth Racecourse-sponsored Northern Area Ladies Championship
Welsh raider Greenbarrow Goldsmith (Hugo Murray) repeated last year’s victory in the Mowden Hall School-sponsored 138cm Open Pony Race, with the minor placings filled by Silver (Freya Ainslie) and Mohammed Ali (Cara Wilson), while Scenic Snow provided 14-year-old Greater Manchester rider Tallula Edmunds with a first winner in the Mowden Hall School-sponsored 148cm Open Pony Race from Judge Fox (Caden Beasley) and The Cork Man (Cara Tuke).
The next Northern Area meeting is the Overton Races Family Day at Overton Farm, Crossford on Saturday 27th April with all proceeds going to Kilbryde Hospice and St Andrew’s Hospice.

THE WORCESTERSHIRE HUNT
SATURDAY 20TH APRIL 2024
By Andrew King
The Laura Richardson-trained Jeux D’Eau added his name to the iconic roll-call for the historic Lady Dudley Cup with a no-nonsense victory in the Classic when providing his Shropshire-based trainer with by far the biggest victory of her fledgling career
Only six-years-old, the gelding partnered by Richardson’s partner Huw Edwards showed great tenacity up the long Chaddesley Corbett home straight to thwart the persistent attentions of Looksnowtlikebrian by a couple of lengths with odds-on favourite Grace A Vous Enki a further three lengths back in third.
An emotional Richardson was finding it difficult to hold back tears of joy and said: “I cannot believe it as we have always thought he was a nice horse ever since we had him as a two-year-old but to win a prestigious race like this is beyond my wildest dreams.
“We had been struggling to find suitable races with him as many of our local meetings have been rained off, so we took the plunge and decided to come here and let him take his chance. It might just sink in at some stage just what he has just done but for now we will savour the moment.”
Looking ahead, Richardson added: “We will have to look at all the options for him but there is only just over a month left of the season - I suppose we will have to consider hunter chases after a success like that.”
The victory of Jeux D’eau proved the middle leg of a treble for Edwards as he had earlier taken the opening Maiden for 4&5yo aboard Philip Rowley’s newcomer Jacques Clouseau and completed the three-timer when pushing out Call Her Clever for the Maiden mares and fillies contest.
Not surprisingly, Rowley was quick to announce that Jacques Clouseau was for sale after the good-looking five-year-old had lowered the colours of Old Cowboy by a length in a driving finish.
He said: “We think he is a very smart horse with loads of scope and is so straightforward. If someone wants him to stay in the yard that is fine, otherwise he will be off the sales as that is what he was purchased for in the first place.”
There was plenty of daylight between Call Her Clever and her rivals as she passed the post with 16 lengths to spare over Penelope Ann in a race that was run in memory of the late Robert Chugg.
Winning trainer Niel Turner, who was celebrating his first winner, said: “It’s an honour to win the race named in honour of Robert as I worked for him for many years and he taught me so much - so this is all down to him.”
The Grace A Vous Enki team of owners Clive and Joan Hitchings along with trainer Nicky Sheppard did not go away empty handed as Ihandaya, ridden by Natalie Parker, stretched his winning sequence to three since switching to his current trainer
Although Ihandaya faced only one other rival in the shape of Tigerbythetail, the race turned out to be a bit of cat and mouse played out by Parker and Gina Ellis with the former electing to make the running and that ploy paid off with a comfortable 8 lengths call.
Sheppard commented: “He keeps going the right way but there is no real plan with him as we will take it one step at a time
and where he runs next will be decided by Clive and Joan.” The winning trainer had earlier initiated a double when A Jet Of Our Own got the better of a protracted tussle with Hidor De Bersy to take the spoils in the 2m 4f Conditions contest.
Winning rider Freddie Philipson-Stow said: “We fitted him with cheekpieces for the first time and the plan was to be very positive on him as he stays three miles. I suspect he will have at least one more run before the season ends in five weeks or so.”
Kauto No Risk made a belated winning return when posting a battling halflength verdict over the rallying Perryville when lifting the Members race for trainer Jo Priest, rider Zak Baker and owner John Hargreaves. Priest explained the eight-year-old’s absence by saying: “it has simply been a waiting game for some better conditions as it has been bottomless everywhere this winter and he must have goodish ground.”
It proved a red letter day for rider Patsy Page as she celebrated her first ever winner after Rockhamtom made it fifth time lucky this season with a victory over You And Me Too for the 2m Maiden.

THE CURRE & LLANGIBBY
SUNDAY 21ST APRIL 2024
By Alison Morris
After months of heavy rain and rearrangements the Curre and Llangibby Hunt finally held their meeting in blazing sunshine this past Sunday, at the picturesque Howick course just outside Chepstow. It was good to be back in the pointing field in South Wales and a healthy crowd enjoyed the day after what has been a long wet winter
The first race on the card was the Curre and Llangibby Hunt Farmers and Subscribers race, run in memory of Patience Stratton. This saw a small but competitive field, with the eventual winner being the small 5-year-old bay mare Joyzain, trained by Luke Price. This heralded the start of what turned out to be an eventful and satisfactory day for young Edward Vaughan, son of trainer Tim. Ed is currently still only 16 and this was his 11th winner With a busy day ahead, it seemed certain that the tally would increase before the meeting was over.
The Wales Area Conditions race (Level 3) was next off and saw victory go the way of Catherine William’s Prime Pretender, ridden by daughter Eleanor You only need two brave horses and two brave jockeys to make an exciting race and the finish of this race was as good as any that will be seen this season. Once again young Edward Vaughan was in the thick of the action aboard State of Fame, and it was a neck and neck battle to the line between him and his rival. The courage of both jockeys and horses could never be questioned as they both arrived at the last at a furious pace. Chloe Mills and Top of the Charts viewed the action back in third. Ellie Williams has a tally of thirty-three winners in total, eleven under rules, while Prime Pretender himself was scoring his second win of the season. Originally purchased to run under rules the gelding was spotted in the field by father Evan, who decided that he wanted him for point to pointing.
Another conditions race followed this time being run for PPORA Club Members Grassroots Riders, for those at the meeting who may have been confused by this new category the race card gave a helpful definition; a grassroots rider cannot have ridden more than 20 winners under the rules of racing, or the rules of a recognised racing authority Point to Point racing
and Arab horse racing included. This saw another small but competitive field with the Lamerton trained The Dartmoor Rose emerging the winner from Siberian Star back in second. Dartmoor Rose’s jockey was having her first ride in Wales but it is her thirteenth winner overall.
The Men’s Open Race saw the second leg of what was to be an eventual treble on the day for Edward Vaughan with his father’s Poli Roli. When the Poliglote gelding was for sale bloodstock agent Tom Malone contacted Tim Vaughan stating he had a nice horse for Ed to ride that would be a safe and enjoyable conveyance for his first season. This was the horse’s second win this year and he was always in command once turning for home with the good mare Miss Seagreen back in second; James King could only watch from third with Footloose
“A naughty boy but I’m so grateful to be able to ride him. He’s the horse of a lifetime.” Was Ellie William’s description of the prolific Voodoo Doll who won his sixth race in a row in the Ladies Open. The Getaway gelding likes to have a good look around him and as he is often left at the head of affairs Ellie has her work cut out to keep him focused. This in no way deters from his performance and he came home five lengths clear of Glancing Glory with Makety back in third.
The Restricted Race saw the final leg of the Edward Vaughan treble aboard Designer Destiny. The Jeremy gelding was left clear after the fall at the penultimate fence of Mr Bezi, but had always been in command. A delighted Ed claimed that his day was “brilliant” as he arrived in the winner’s enclosure.
Echoes of times gone by filled the course as the Maiden race was split into two divisions. The first division went the way of the very aptly named Ifindoubtgoflatout and Tom Broughton. Down The Inner was back in second with the well fancied Fifty Shades of Bay back in third. Ifindoubtgoflatout’s jockey was surprised but delighted with his success claiming that he had to keep the horse awake as he thought he would stop if left alone in front. The win gave the member of Fergal O’Brien’s yard his twenty third winner between the flags. Second division went to Unexpected Edge and Charlie Sprake. The Flemensfirth gelding was gifted to owner Chris Williams ( father of professional jockey Lorcan) by Paul Nicholls as the trainer felt he would not make the grade, A discussion took place as to the chance to run the horse in Point to Points and the result was a victory for the owner, the jockey and also trainer Dean Coleman. Despite his name there was nothing too unexpected about the victory as he set off two to one joint favourite with Catchim who could only finish third.

THE WEST & NORTH NORFOLK
SUNDAY 21ST APRIL 2024
By Mike Ashby
The perfect ten was achieved, on Sunday, with the full complement of scheduled East Anglian fixtures taking place on their original dates, whilst other parts of the country have endured waterlogged courses, resulting in disheartening postponed or abandoned meetings.
The West and North Norfolk meeting at Fakenham upheld the high standard of superb racing, seen throughout the year, to bring the 2023/24 East Anglian season to a close Throughout the afternoon, including the two pony races that commenced proceedings, there were some closely fought finishes to thrill the above-average crowd.
Top honours, on the training-front, went to David Kemp who saddled two winners and his first success came in the Conditions Level 3 race where Back It Up, partnered by Alex Chadwick, strongly pressed Good Source round the final bend and ran on gamely to withhold a renewed challenge from their rallying rival. Chadwick was back in action after being badly bruised and shaken when Dragon d’Estruval slipped up at High Easter the previous weekend. After returning with a winner at Parham on Saturday, on his own admittance there was still some after-effects especially the visible facial bruising but he had been passed fit to ride after a CT scan on his head earlier in theweek.TheridehegaveBackItUpwasexceptional and fully praised by trainer Kemp and owner John Ridge as the sharp bends of the course plainly didn’t suit the winner’s galloping and stamina-based style so the 6-y-o had to be pushed all the way which would have tested Chadwick’s fitness to the limit. No direct plans for the Back It Up’s next appearance, other than he will be seen again this season and likely to be aimed at Open contests next campaign.
The grey/almost white Clara Sorrento and Rupert Stearn repeated last year’s victory in the Mixed Open race with another scintillating front-running, jumping performance to give Kemp his second success of the afternoon. It gave the Stearn family sheer delight to see their grey horse bowling along and jumping spectacularly and this exhibition display also warmed the hearts of the crowd, on a chilly day. The other declared runners in this contest were more than capable opponents but not one was able to land a blow with Captain Biggles and I K Brunel eventually filling the minor places. Tullys Touch who had won handsomely at High Easter the previous weekend, “ran flat and didn’t jump well” according to Jack Andrews, who had the ride, and finished in fifth a place behind Not That Fuisse, which shows the calibre of the race The winner is now 13 years old and has won 6 times for owner Simon Stearn and his son Rupert, who post-race described his partner as ”fantastic today and we’re lucky to have
him. He made some tremendous leaps and he saw a stride, even if I didn’t”. Rupert was in some agony after dismounting as he suspected he had twisted his upper torso when Cereal Killer ran out in the previous race and the injury occurred when successfully attempting to maintain his balance in the saddle, and not plough through the wing of the fence.
Ten-times national Ladies champion, Gina Andrews, who finished a creditable 12th in last weekend’s Grand National, partnered Lunar Contact to victory in the Restricted race when the pairing swept past their toiling rivals, round the final bend and jumped the last fence impressively, to win by 5 lengths. This reduced Izzie Marshall’s lead to two in this year’s title race and it’s all to play for, in the coming weeks. The winner is owned by the irrepressible Keith Loads and his partner Kate Bowling and is in training with Gina. Keith couldn’t hide his pleasure in seeing his colours being carried to victory at Fakenham, a course he has supported in many ways, over the years.
An excellent afternoon for jockey Dale Peters who rode two winners. Peacocks Secret (Veteran Horse Conditions race) and Jersey Fromentin (Maiden) to bring his tally for the season to 18 making him a clear 3rd in the race for the national Mens Championship title Dale’s best total for a season currently stands at 23 and this is imminent danger of being surpassed beforetheseasonends, forthelikeableandextremely competent jockey from Sawtry in Cambridgeshire.
Peacocks Secret was entitled to win the Jockey Club and RoR Veteran Horse Conditions race Level 2 having performed adequately including a victory, in three hunter ‘chases around the Norfolk course, in the past. In this, his first point outing around Fakenham, saw Killinkere and Josh The Plod take control of the early exchanges but the latter was not jumping at all fluently, despite Charlie Buckle’s urgings, from the saddle Peacocks Secret was taken into the lead by Peters, going out on their final circuit and at the open ditch, three out, Killinkere and the improving Back Bar were the nearest pursuers. It required a foot-perfect jump at the last, to seal the win which
Peacocks Secret executed to win comfortably by 4 lengths from the Alan Hill-trained Back Bar, with Killinkere another 3 lengths further back.
PetersvictoryontheAndrewPennock-trainedJersey Fromentin in the concluding Maiden, showcased the jockey’s powerful finishing attributes in a closely fought battle on the run-in with Graveside Lad, after the pair had jumped the last virtually in unison. The winner had three outings in Irish points and by all accounts was unlucky on his GB debut at Thorpe at the beginning of April, when a rival jumped across him and in the resultant collision, Dale was unseated at the 4th fence. The odds-on favourite Vango Vick and Jack Andrews led the tightly packed field for over a circuit with Fiftyfifty, their nearest challenger, but as these two began to fade it was the Ed Turnertrained Graveside Lad and the eventual winner who homed-in on the final fence with Jersey Fromentin, surprisingly friendless in the betting market, snatching the victory by ½ length.
Ed Turner may just have been pipped in the Maiden but the day had started exceedingly well for the Ampton- based trainer when Take To Heart justified favouritism, in the opening PPORA Veteran and Novice Riders’ race Cian Murphy, having his first ride for the Turner Family in their famous colours, led from the start and the pairing kept up a relentless pace to be 6 lengths clear at the finish, from Sum It Up Murphy was also successful in the same race last year and this was the 5th career win from just 15 rides, for the young jockey This was Take To Heart’s 4th point win since the Turner’s acquired the gelding and has a notable background having been bred by the late Queen Elizabeth and won two hurdles races and a novice ‘chase when trained under rules, by Nicky Henderson.
So the curtain comes down on another East Anglian season and this last fixture was an entertaining and successfully administered meeting. No doubt we will reflect, throughout the summer months, how excellent the racing has been during this season, and look forward to the action returning in December
