ON THE CLOCK Some high class performers took the stage last weekend. Famous Clermont demonstrated his wellbeing at Larkhill and there was good duel between Macklin and Highway Jewel at Milborne, but the undoubted highlight was Tigerbythetail’s victory in the Mixed Open at Horseheath,. It was at this very same meeting 12 months ago that Tigerbythetrail had first signalled his potential, clocking the fastest time of the day when losing his maiden tag. Novicey last year, he was kept to shallow waters thereafter but maintained steady progress and would have ended the season unbeaten but for a falling when well clear on his first foray into Open company. A year on, settled in rear, his jumping was noticeably slick and he fairly sluiced through the field when given the office on the turn to the long uphill straight to win readily. Whilst it might be argued that runnerup Law of Gold will strip better for the run and that that the proximity of Mitchouka holds the level of form down a little, it can be argued with equal justification that Mitchouka is in top form at present and that multiple winners Ragnar Lodbrok and Tully Touch were well beaten off. There was no video coverage at the meeting and so no sectional data is available, which is regrettable as the field went very steadily on the first circuit and the resultant time figure of just 106 does not do justice to the performance. On the book, as I assess it, Tigerbythetail ran to a mark in the mid 120’s – a figure that certainly will make him a worthy competitor in future hunter chases. Tigerbythetail came to pointing, not as an unraced individual with potential but as one who had already had several races over hurdles in which, although he had performed consistently, he had failed to win. Coconut Twist (102), winner of five-year-old and up maiden at Larkhill, has a similar profile. He had raced twelve times under Rules, campaigned at a variety of distances, showing himself to be strong traveller but one who lacked pace at the business end. Indeed, he had filled the runner-up spot in each of his last five outings and remained a maiden. Here, on his pointing debut for Chris Barber, he again travelled strongly, just behind the leaders, until fairly cruising into the lead after the second last, whereupon he showed a good turn of foot to quickly draw clear of his rivals and eventually pass the post 13 lengths to the good , hard held. He probably beat little but could not have been visually more impressive, and a time figure some 7lbs higher than his form rating makes him a very interesting horse to follow. NATIONAL POINT-TO-POINT CHAMPIONSHIPS 2023/24 In the event of a tie in any category, the winner will be decided by second placings. If it is still tied, third, then fourth placings will decide the winner. Walkovers will again not count towards any National Championship in 2023-24.

REPORTS ROYAL ARTILLERY

SATURDAY 27 JANUARY 2024 By Bob Bracher

Wolf Walker and Will Biddick on their way to victory in the Restricted Photo: Tim Holt

The rearranged meeting of the Royal Artillery point to point took place at Larkhill on a dry afternoon with several notable performances including a riding treble for Will Biddick and a training treble for Chris Barber, a first ever training victory for a recently retired jockey and a double for the stallion Jack Hobbs in the divided Bumper race. The Cordings Limited sponsored Larkhill Hunt race opened the meeting with the locally trained Sake of Secrecy expected to provide owners Stan Rawlins and Harriet Waight with an empathetic victory, but although the gelding managed to secure a neck victory over the veteran Captain Buck’s it was hard work. His rider Charlie Sprake had a number of worrying moments and his jumping was far from fluent but a relieved Charlie exclaimed, on dismounting, ‘at least he put his head down and got the job done’. Stan described him as ‘not a Larkhill horse despite where he is trained’ (in sight of the course) and he is likely to be campaigned away from the Wiltshire course for the rest of the season. Will and Chris secured the first leg of their respective trebles when Coconut Twist put up an impressive performance in the Maiden race. Tracking the two leaders for most of the race, Will eased his mount into the lead approaching the second last and drew clear on the run in. Owned by Troika Racing and previously in the care of trainer Brian Barr, he had been prepared initially by Daisy Hitchins who had been Brian’s assistant for 12 years before moving to Chris at the beginning of December. Daisy, who is awaiting her license to train herself under Rules having completed her modules, explained that ‘we have had him for more than two years and he ran a number of good races last summer’. Whether he returns to NH racing or stays pointing, he looks an interesting prospect. The Nimrod Sponsored Conditions Race for Novice Riders proved to be a slow race for the two declared horses and there was little between Ask Nile and Oneupmanship until after the final open ditch when Ask Nile drew away from his rival. Walter Barnett, riding his first winner for owner Tim Underwood, was recording his third career victory and reported that his mount had ‘jumped very well’ and that’ I am becoming fond of Larkhill

as this was my second win at the course this season’. Tim indicated that the gelding is likely to remain in Novice Riders races this season. There was much stable confidence in the Max Comley trained Ryans Fancy in SDP Farriery sponsored Conditions race and this proved to be well founded. Ridden confidently by James King he had too much in hand to defeat main rival Montanna, ridden by Chloe Emsley. Owned by a family partnership headed up by Rebecca Bell, who works for Max and hopes to make her riding debut on the gelding later in the season. Bought privately from Caroline Robinson Max thought that ‘the gelding should prove to be a perfect schoolmaster for Rebecca, who used to work for Anthony Honeyball in Dorset.’ The Nimrod sponsored Mixed Open race proved to be an exhibition round of jumping from the Aintree hero from last season Famous Clermont - apart from the sixth fence where a lapse of concentration caused some concern. Making all from his sole rival Teescomponentfly, he crossed the line in a good time with the length of the run in between them. Chris Barber expressed satisfaction with the outing saying, ‘that will put him nearly spot on for his next outing which will be the Walrus Hunter Chase at Haydock’ (which he won last year). He added that ‘he may have some work over poles with Rupert Nuttall to sharpen up his jumping before his February date.’ Will and Chris achieved their respective trebles when Wolf Walker beat his market rival Douglas Longbottom in the Honourable Artillery Company sponsored Restricted race. Impressive on his debut at the previous Larkhill meeting, he was strongly fancied to follow up and despite looking vulnerable after the second last Will had more in hand and drew

away to record a four lengths victory. Part owner Robert Fear, whilst being delighted with his gelding’s success, indicated that ‘he will not be set any fancy targets for this season and it is important to keep the lid on him as he is a real long-term prospect’. Owners Robert and Andrew Ham have much to look forward to. The JRL Group sponsored Bumper was divided on the day with 15 of the 17 horses entered declared to run. The first division saw an impressive winner for newcomer Colin Hobbs trained by the recently retired jockey Tom Scudamore with his first ever runner as a trainer. Owned by his breeder Caroline Beresford-Wylie and Richard Kent, he is a son of the stallion Jack Hobbs and his dam, Colin’s Sister, won five Hurdle races and was fourth in Stayers Hurdle in 2018. Tom, paying his first visit to Larkhill since a 16-year-old, recalled that ‘I do not have good memories here as I only had three rides here when I first started riding and did not get round on any of them including breaking my collar bone, but this is brilliant’. Ridden by the leading Novice Rider Ed Vaughan he explained that ‘I had a call a couple of weeks ago from Tom asking me to ride and went and sat on the gelding last week’. He showed a good turn of foot over the final furlong and looks an exciting prospect. The second division also went to another son of Jack Hobbs, this time Batsman, bred by the Bradstock family out of Maid of Oaksey who is a half sister to the prolific Coneygree and Carruthers. The Max Comley trained Land Girl’s Luck looked the winner but as the field came into the home straight Lily Bradstock asked her mount to quicken and he responded willingly to her urgings. Delighted to train her first winner of the season and her first ever Bumper winner Sara was pleased that the family winning lineage has been continued.

THE CAMBRIDGESHIRE WITH ENFIELD CHACE SUNDAY 28 JANUARY 2024 By Mike Ashby

A congratulatory pat, from Keith Loads, for Artiste d’Ainay after claiming the Maiden Photo: Neale Blackburn

Having been involved and passionate about point-to-point racing for 50 years, owner Keith Loads, with his partner Kate Bowling, enjoyed a dream day at the Cambridgeshire with Enfield Chace meeting at Horseheath. Keith, a former Norfolk farmer and comic entertainer, now residing in Suffolk, first rode in a point-to-point race at Costessey in Norfolk in 1974, which ended in an ‘unseat’. However, on Sunday he proudly saw three of his horses carrying his colours, enter the winners’ enclosure and by their performances could well go on to more achievements, in the coming months and seasons. The Andrew Pennock-trained Trojan Du Berlais ridden by Paddy Barlow, commenced Loads’ winning afternoon with another convincing showing in the Restricted race, to supplement his Maiden victory at the previous Horseheath meeting. Trainer Pennock is delighted how the 5yo’s Irish form is working out and has high praise for his “underrated” jockey Barlow who post-race stated his partner had “jumped brilliantly and is a dream to ride“. Tigerbythetail continued the success story, in the Mixed Open, which from the declarations had the look of a high calibre contest and the race itself didn’t disappoint, with one of the classiest Open races seen in East Anglia for many a season. Here, there were several contenders for top honours with the eight declared runners having won a total of 39 points and 7 hunter ‘chases with 22 of the point victories coming in Open races. The Tom Ellis-trained winner was also following-up a victory at the December Horseheath meeting having beaten a solitary rival. Tigerbythetail and Gina Andrews powered away from their rivals approaching two out and was 3½ lengths clear of Law Of Gold at the finish with Mitchouka another length adrift. This was a devasting performance which would have enthused connections no end and a hunter ‘chase debut in the near future beckons. The treble was completed by Artiste D’Ainay who finally broke his maiden tag and was a convincing winner ridden by Jack

Andrews for his brother-in-law, trainer Tom Ellis, after the favourite Bless The Moon fell five out bringing down O’Halloran’s Castle in the process. This was Artiste D’Ainay’s, an ex-Irish purchase, second outing for the stable and with hindsight they all now agree they were possibly too judgemental about the 6yo’s initial run at Horseheath on New Year’s Eve, when it was fully expected he would be successful. As Jack now concludes “ it was his first run over fences…. all our horses have come on for their initial outings….as seen with their improvements over the last couple of weeks”. Main Stage followed up her decent seasonal debut behind Trojan Du Berlais at the last meeting, with a competent jumping display in the Maiden Conditions race, giving Gina Andrews a double and complete a treble on the day for trainer Tom Ellis. The 5yo mare was bought at the Doncaster Sales to run in the colours of the Signy and Marriage Families and they are fully hopeful she has the ability to go through the ranks thus emulating the achievements of Fairly Famous and I’m Spellbound from last season. On a card which produced a total of 48 runners facing the starter, Andrew Hickman began with a PPORA Novice Riders’ contest which saw the game mare, Jonjoela, partnered by Josh Parker and trained by Jenny Owen, reverse placings with Imperial Esprit and Keagan Kirkby after they finished first and second in a similar

#gopointing 18

contest, at Horseheath’s previous meeting. There was an extra 3lb pull in the weights in favour of Jonjoela which could have made the difference, this time but Kirkby felt his mount wasn’t quite giving him the same feeling in running as in the December race. A delighted Parker was more than pleased with Jonjoela’s performance who he owns, “jumped brilliantly…responded when asked for an effort…gave me the best feeling.” This was their second victory together and also Josh’s second winner, having scored at Revesby Park exactly a year ago. Now working full-time at Jenny and James Owen’s Newmarket yard, Parker was complimentary for all the help and assistance afforded to him by the Owens. Another superb day’s racing saw the Stearn’s Family new acquisition Knight In Dubai, complete a double for trainer Jenny Owen in the hands of Rupert Stearn, the owner’s son. Their success came in the concluding Conditions race, after forging ahead of their rivals approaching the final fence and finish 3½ lengths clear of the dead-heaters Boss Man Fred and the front-running Grand Roi. So a day of high-class racing in what has already been an exceptional East Anglian season so far, with owner Keith Loads and his partner Kate enjoying one of the best ever experiences, with the jubilant couple celebrating a first-ever treble and every reason to dream of possibly many more, exciting racing days ahead.

THE PERCY

SUNDAY 28 JANUARY 2024 By Peter Burgon Leicestershire trainer Kelly Morgan enjoyed another successful trip up the A1 to Alnwick on Sunday with a double at the Percy fixture courtesy of Jumper Watt and Runwiththetide to make it 9 winners from 15 runners at the Ratcheugh Farm course since December 2021. Jumper Watt set the ball rolling when scoring impressively on debut in the 2m4f Joiners Arms Maiden Race. Confidently ridden by Joe Wright, the five-year-old was always travelling well behind the leaders before taking it up approaching four out. The youngster then quickened clear up the hill and it was one-way traffic from the next as he cruised home twelve lengths ahead of Bryman’s Moon (Jack Teal). Related to multiple jumps winners in France, this Konig Turf gelding was bought for 15,000 euros at Goffs Land Rover Sale in June 2022. Morgan said: ‘’He’d been flying on the gallops at home and is now for sale.’’ Wright added: ‘’He winged four out, cruised up the hill in second gear and did it so easily.’’ Runwiththetide doubled up for Morgan’s Waltham-on-the-Wolds yard with a first-

time out victory for the second season in a row in the Hazelrigg Racing Intermediate Race under a well-judged front-running ride from Ellie Callwood. The seven-year-old didn’t see another rival and still had plenty left in the tank as she crossed the line seven lengths in front of the only other finisher Cool Desire (John Dawson). Bought for £10,000 out of Dan Skelton’s yard at Tattersalls Ascot Sale in November 2022, Runwiththetide has subsequently won all 3 Pointing starts from Morgan’s yard. This was a 10th career success between the flags for Callwood, who said: ‘’That wasn’t the plan beforehand but she just loved bowling along in front, took lengths out of her rivals at every fence and I didn’t have to move a muscle.’’ Senor Lombardy and Dundrum Wood maintained their 100% records at Alnwick (both 4-4) in the opening two contests. Odds-on favourite Senor Lombardy returned from a 680-day absence to land the Percy Hunt Conditions Race in game

fashion under Lyall Hodgins. In his comfort zone dictating the pace from the off, the evergreen eleven-year-old jumped well all the way and was always doing enough in the closing stages to score by a length from the fast-finishing Coole Hall (Abi Reid). This was a popular win for owners Brian & Kelly Harding and Newton-by-the-Sea couple Adam & Kate Thompson as well as an outstanding training performance by Brian who has had to be patient after his stable star picked up a leg injury when finishing 5th to Billaway in the 2022 Cheltenham Foxhunters’ Chase. Harding said: ‘’He’s a proper horse, is sure to come on a lot for the run and might come back here for the College Valley & North Northumberland fixture on February 25.’’ Coincidentally, there was little between Senor Lombardy and Coole Hall when they met twice over hurdles more than six years ago. In a 2m6f Kelso Novices’ Hurdle on 11th November 2017. Senor Lombardy beat Coole Hall by one-and-a-quarter lengths. Three weeks later, Coole Hall got his revenge in the 2m6f ‘French Furze’ Novices’

www.pointtopoint.co.uk

Hurdle at Newcastle when beating Senor Lombardy by the same margin. An across the card four-timer for the Tom Ellis yard was kick-started by course specialist Dundrum Wood in the Meldrum Construction Ladies Open Race, providing jockey Martha Reeve, granddaughter of owner Shona Westrope, with her 4th Pointing winner. Jumping and travelling well from the off on his belated seasonal debut, the tenyear-old made most of the running to beat Oscar Wilde (Amy Coltherd) by one-anda-quarter lengths with hat-trick seeking Ballydonagh Boy (Rosie Howarth) a short head away in third. Shona, who was brought up at Upper Hindhope in the Scottish Borders near Hownam, has now seen her emerald green colours carried to victory eight times at Alnwick since January 2019 from just nine runners, comprising the now retired Kalabaloo (4-5) and Dundrum Wood (4-4). Carrying the well known colours of the late Trevor Hemmings, another Warwickshire raider Deise Aba (Zac Baker), who ran at 3 Cheltenham Festivals and was pulled up in the 2022 Grand National, provided trainer Francesca Poste with a first Alnwick winner in the Sintons Law Men’s Open Race. However, the 135-rated chaser didn’t have things all his own way and gave favourite backers some anxious moments before sprinting clear after the last to beat Cuneo (John Dawson) by ten lengths.

This was also a first Alnwick winner for Baker, who said of the eleven-year-old: ‘’A bigger field at Larkhill last time helped push him along as he’s getting a bit of a monkey in his old age. It was hard enough work out there on that sticky ground and he was only doing as much as he needed to before forging clear when I pressed the button on the run-in. The plan when we got him was always to rejuvenate the old boy and sweeten him up to see if we can eventually go hunter chasing.’’

return journey to Cheshire would seem a lot shorter after debutante Austins Hill Lass turned the closing stages of the 2m JRL Group Point-to-Point Flat Race into a procession. The five-year-old Telescope mare never looked like being caught after going clear three furlongs from home, and took some pulling up by Huw Edwards after crossing the line twelve lengths ahead of Fair Catch (Thomas Easterby), with Batsman Jack (Meisha Micklewright) a further nine lengths way in third.

Last month’s Alnwick 2m4f Maiden winner Foxylee (Tom Chatfeild-Roberts) led from the tenth in the Ryecroft Glenton Restricted Race until headed three out by Courting Flow (Christy Furness) and Shropshire raider Bestfriend Barnaby (Guy Sankey). After holding a one length advantage at the last, Courting Flow was reeled in and briefly headed on the run-in by Bestfriend Barnaby before battling back in the dying strides to snatch a short head verdict.

A delighted Roach said: ‘’She was bought privately from Shade Oak Stud after being spotted in the catalogue for Tattersalls Ascot Sale in July 2022. It’s taken a while for the penny to drop but we knew there wouldn’t be a fitter horse in the race as she had worked well upsides stable star Time Leader earlier in the week.’’

Off the track for 22 months prior to finishing runner-up to Fortunes Hill on his comeback outing at Sheriff Hutton on January 14, the Grania Furness-owned and Jack Teal-trained winner clearly likes it around Alnwick having finished runnerup to Arctic Oscar at the corresponding meeting in January 2022 before going one better four weeks later at the College Valley & North Northumberland fixture.

The winner is owned by Graham Briscoe who runs the family business Briscoe’s Dairy with his sons Edward and Charlie. It has been offering doorstep milk deliveries for over 60 years and Austins Hill Lass is named after the family farm in Tarvin near Chester. Graham’s last Northern Area runner Fair Exchange was also a winner at Corbridge in February 2018. The next Northern Area fixtures are the Berwickshire at Friars Haugh, Kelso on February 11 and the College Valley & North Northumberland at Alnwick on February 25.

Nantwich-based first season trainer Hannah Roach was out of luck with her Maiden runner Mexican Boy but the

SOUTH DORSET

SUNDAY 28 JANUARY 2024 By Kirsty Boutflower

Scoresby and Rob David claim the Restricted at Milborne St Andrew Photo: Tim Holt

A dry week produced excellent racing ground at Milborne St Andrew and the quality entries that the South Dorset had received ensured the very large crowd were treated to some exciting, top-class racing throughout the afternoon. Two high-quality young horse maidens, a combined riding/training double for Will Biddick and a thrilling battle of the veterans in the Ladies Open were high points. Last season Macklin rose to the challenge of filling the lofty shoes of Cheltenham Foxhunter winner, Porlock Bay for owner John Studd, when he won three times resulting in being awarded the Greenslade Taylor Hunt trophy. With Macklin making his seasonal reappearance yesterday, punters made the tough Welsh mare, Highway Jewel favourite over him and Bradley Gibbs set out to make every post a winning one on her. There are few jockeys however who ride the course as well as Will and he sat quietly on Macklin allowing him to pop away. As he approached the second last, Will pressed the turbo button and his very likeable mount responded. Such was the authority of this win, Will even had time for a cheeky word with Bradley as he cosily passed him on the run-in to win by a little under 4 lengths. This was a very smart performance and delighted owner John Studd thought he could run in a Hunter Chase this year. The day’s racing got off to a better start for Bradley Gibbs who took the first division of the young horse maiden on Crocodile Lounge who he also trains for Beverley Thomas, Tudor Harris and Adrian Simpson. There were some very good looking horses in the paddock and the unraced Rowdy was sent off a short-priced favourite but his inexperience got the better of him and he pulled up two fences from home. Crocodile Lounge had led from flag fall jumping soundly and he managed to hold off a determined Martin McIntyre on Glenmount with the two finishing well clear. Joint-owner Beverley Thomas explained “He’s not the fastest horse so he needed to jump off and make all.” The horse had had two runs in Ireland the second of which is proving to be solid form with Wolf Walker (who had won for the second time at Larkhill on Saturday) having finished just behind Crocodile Lounge. Purchased for connections by Jimmy Kelly who also found Highway Jewel for Bradley, the winner (and runner-up) look to have very bright futures. The second division was also a cracker on looks and it didn’t disappoint with Will Biddick and favourite Fresh Perspective just holding on from a closing Casting Aspersions with Rip Wheeler back in third. It was a good performance by all three placed

horses and this form could be very strong. The winner’s owner is Tom Malone who has stepped sideways from training this season sending horses to Will Biddick instead. Enjoying less pressure, Tom explained he had bought the winner, a big raw horse by New Approach at the Goff’s Landrover Sales and he would now be back on the market. The runner-up had gone into plenty of notebooks when holding every chance before coming down two out at Larkhill in November. Again he made a mistake three out allowing the two 4 year olds, Fresh Perspective and Rip Wheeler to go clear. Casting Aspersions rapidly made up ground between the last two fences and was only a length adrift at the finish giving a stone to the winner. If he can smooth out the mistakes, he looks a readymade winner next time. Possibly the most appropriate win came in the Members race when Ed Walker’s Great Colewood benefitted from a last fence fall by Enchanted Magic to record a 25 length success for owner Richard King. Richard who had been unwell had decided to take a break from owning until the family persuaded him to continue with Great Colewood with Ed’s wife, Polly taking a half share. Richard, a previous joint master for the South Dorset, had also recently stood down as Chairman for the meeting and was on hand to greet his homebred winner. He was also awarded the Wessex Area Moment of the Month award for January for this special win and a bottle of Tanners champagne was presented to him after the Men’s Open. Family is clearly important to NH trainer Tim Vaughan as he welcomed his 16 year old son Ed, back into the winner’s enclosure aboard Ocojohn in the older maiden after an easy 16 length victory cheered on by a large support team. The beaming trainer admitted seeing his son doing so well (this was his sixth win this season) was giving him more pleasure than training winners under Rules. Tim said “Ocojohn had some decent form in Ireland and has been given a lovely positive ride by Ed. We have about 20 horses in for him to ride, some older horses and some less experienced so a nice balance for him to learn on.”

#gopointing 21

Paul Nicholls is another Rules trainer who provides decent ammunition for daughter Olive to craft her skills but with her on the side lines due to a collar bone injury, it was left to Charlie Sprake to deputise in the Conditions Race on Duc de Bourbon who had been responsible for Olive’s injury last time at Larkhill. Trained by Sam Loxton, Duc de Bourbon just held on from Eritage, himself also a former Nicholls inmate. Paul explained “He travels well but probably only just got home. He could make up into a nice Ladies Open horse for Olive who is just about to have a scan to see how her injury is progressing.” The Ladies Open could have been an embarrassing moment for jockey Natalie Parker who struck up a formidable partnership with Tom Barton winning three times around Milborne St Andrew. However she reluctantly sided with No Comment, owned by her mum, Tracy and trained by her sister Laura Jones. It was to be the closest finish of the day with Chloe Emsley failing by only a neck on veteran Tom Barton to peg back No Comment with the heavily backed favourite, Not That Fuisse failing to stay. A delighted Tracy said “He skinned his leg badly at Ottery nearly a year ago and it’s taken so long to heal. Both Natalie and Laura were very confident he was fit enough today though.” Had the result gone the other way, the jockey could have been justified in responding “No Comment!” In contrast the Restricted race went comfortably to Scoresby under Rob David. A winner at Cotley last season for trainer Harry Ryall, he then joined Ben Clarke to run under Rules. Two subsequently disappointing runs over hurdles, saw him returned to Harry this time for Bob Butler and he has clearly benefitted. Jumping upsides the leaders four out, he cruised clear to stroll home by 7 lengths from Templier d’Habert. Harry explained “He was second on his debut here behind the talented Ihandaya so we thought it sensible to come back here today. We also ran him in a tongue-tie and refitted the hood which definitely helps him.”
