ON THE CLOCK Regatta de Blanc (117) handled the step up to open company Hunter chasing with aplomb when landing the first Hunter Chase of the season at Taunton. Always travelling well, she took up the running easily from the pace setting Benny’s King at the turn to the straight and kept on well enough to the line. Her jumping was sound, if sometimes straying to the left, and connections mooted a race at Cheltenham’s Hunterchase meeting as a long term target. First though Regatta de Blanc she is to be aimed at the Coronation Cup and a clash with another Larkhill specialist, Viroflay. There was a stark contrast in the going at the weekend’s two point to point meetings with the going at Sheriff Hutton best described as ‘Ffos Las Heavy’ but that at Ampton almost verging on the fast side of Good! Both courses yielded decent fields however. Sheriff Hutton marked the seasonal debut of last year’s Cheltenham hero Premier Magic (94) who started at short odds in the Mens Open and duly obliged, albeit in workmanlike fashion. The race was run at a steady pace but at least it showed him to be in good order. Fastest race on the card was the Restricted in which Fortune’s Hill (110) finished well clear. His was no easy success however as he needed to be rousted along throughout the final circuit and his task was undoubtedly made easier with the demise of Latenightrumble, who was upsides at the last when unseating Jack Andrews. Fortunes Hill looks a thorough stayer in the making, but one who still needs to improve his jumping technique. Shoddy jumping cost him dear last season and was in evidence again last Sunday where he forfeited ground at several fences. It will be interesting to see if this improves on a left-handed track and on better ground. Runnerup Courting Flow (98) made a promising comeback in second place, staying on through tiring rivals. His figure is not far short of his best of two years ago and providing he suffers no adverse effects from this outing he should be back in the winner’s enclosure before too long. A stayer’s circuit such as that at Dalton Park will suit him well. It’s worth noting that Courting Flow has yet to finish outside the first two. Down at Ampton, Nick Wright landed a double and introduced a promising sort in the shape of Arkle Rua (104). A strong type with scope to improve, he travelled with a fair degree of enthusiasm throughout and stayed on strongly up the hill to readily hold off the late challenge of runner-up Creapapy (FR) (102). Arkle Rua looks something of a bargain buy at just over 3,000 guineas given that he is a half-brother to the useful pointer The Big Sting. The Ellis trained Creapapy had shown relatively little in three outings between the flags in Ireland, but showed a degree of improvement here, under a fairly considerate ride. It won’t be too long before he loses his maiden tag and he might prove a fun horse to follow through the season.

REPORTS DUNSTON HARRIERS SUNDAY 14 JANUARY 2024 By Mike Ashby

“ONE of the best Ampton meetings, if not the best ” was the comment being uttered freely around the racecourse, after Sunday’s superb action at the Dunston Harriers meeting. There were 60 declarations from the original 70 individual horses entered, on the card, necessitating two divisions of the Maiden race to be contested. The first division saw owner/trainer Nick Wright’s Doncaster May Sales purchase, Arkle Rua, partnered by Alex Chadwick, take command of the race three fences out and seize a 5 length advantage over their rivals. Only Creapapy and Gina Andrews made any inroads into this lead but Tom Ellis’ runner could be worth following as the season progresses. Chadwick said of his winning partner, when asked post -race if he shows this form in his training preparation. “No! He is the worst work horse, ever, at home.” Nick Wright did qualify this by intimating in the last 3 weeks, a vast improvement had been shown to boost his chances of success here. The other division went to the favourite, Jingle Du Gouet, sent up by Dorset-based trainer Chris Barber’s stable. Although not jumping impeccably Will Biddick was able to keep the 5yo in touch in a closely packed field, led dashingly throughout by The Red Fella. Biddick produced a masterly challenge on the run-in which sealed the victory by a length. The two Open contests were also particularly closely fought affairs with the Ladies’ prize going to Captain Biggles and Gina Andrews, who managed to get the better of Ampton specialists, Tullys Touch and Precious Bounty, at the last obstacle and through to the winning line. Gina was pleasantly surprised by Captain Biggles’ well-being for his seasonal debut and equally his ability to quicken when asked for an effort. The grey will probably be campaigned along similar lines to last season and will give his group of owners some more memorable days of racing. Castle Trump was also fit and ready to run his race from the front, in the Mens Open with owner/jockey Charlie Buckle also confirming his fitness with a determined ride. In another tight and exciting finish the pairing held off

Two very young jockeys, Edward Vaughan and Cian Murphy, enjoyed victories in the opening and concluding races respectively and these are two names to remember, not only for now but also for future seasons.

was instrumental in completing a double on the day for Wright, when Red Maple took the honours in the closing Novice Riders’ race. Murphy made full use of the favourite’s abilities when they put the race to bed at what was proving to be a crucial obstacle, the third from home. The pairing had 3 ½ lengths to spare over their market rival Jonjoela.

Edward Vaughan, with his father NH trainer Tim, and grooms had left their stables in Cowbridge, in the Vale of Glamorgan at 4am, in the morning and were one of the first to arrive at the course, bringing with them SIX horses. They commenced the afternoon with the perfect start in the opening Veteran Conditions race. Poli Roi was always in the leading two of the eleven starters with the favourite Koyote waited with by Gina Andrews. The 3rd last fence saw the race definitively develop when Koyote fell and sixteen-year-old Vaughan took Poli Roi to the front and breeze-on up the Ampton finishing straight to record his 4th career win, in his first season of pointing.

Trainer Wright confirmed that his son Archie, who retired from race-riding after winning on Red Maple at Dingley last May, is currently spending time in the USA, based in Kentucky and increasing his equine knowledge at a stud centre.

Cian Murphy, who turns seventeen this month, certainly didn’t have as far to travel to Ampton, being based in the Newmarket area. This young man’s record of success currently stands at 4 wins from 11 rides with his number of opportunities likely to be increased radically, in the near future. Amongst the trainers he rides out for are Nick Wright and Andrew Pennock and he

What a day. The weather, the course preparation, the going, an expertly conducted meeting, an extensive attendance together with an enormous amount of declared runners providing topdraw racing. The East Anglian season has certainly started in a superb manner with the two meetings staged, so far, providing total enjoyment.

Bedfordshire-based trainer, Michael Kehoe has his team in fine fettle. With his jockey Charlie Case, they added to their success at the opening meeting in the area at Horseheath, with another decisive winner in Paper Mill who took the Restricted event. Their 5 length winning margin was the biggest of the day where all 12 entries faced the starter.

YORKSHIRE AREA POINT TO POINT CLUB SUNDAY 14 JANUARY 2024 By Will Milburn

The Yorkshire season got off to a flying start on Sunday with the running of the Yorkshire Area Club Meeting at Sheriff Hutton, by kind permission of Mick Easterby. Run in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, the meeting presented a cheque to this fantastic charity for £14,894 from last year’s meeting, on a very competitive card, where the smallest field of runners was 10. The last time a meeting could boast such a strong turn out was at Larkhill back in December of 2020, when Covid lockdowns meant Britain was staging fewer fixtures. The star on display was last year’s Cheltenham Foxhunters winner, Premier Magic, brilliantly handled by rider and trainer Bradley Gibbs. In recent seasons cameras have been situated on the finish to provide “photo finishes” in the event of a close result and this weekend it was in much demand, with two dead heats. The first of which came in the Ladies Open. It saw recent Alnwick winner Ballydonagh Boy under usual pilot Rosie Howarth lead over the last, however a strong challenge from Mount Mews under Roisin Leech down the outside saw the latter join the leader on the line. Both teams were delighted to share the first honours as trainers Lucinda Hughes and Sam Coward lifted the winning trophy. The second of the two tight finishes came in the final race, the 2m 4f Maiden and saw the Jack Teal trained and ridden Fire In Her Eyes, who was making her British debut, whilst the John Dawson ridden Wottinger trained by his wife Alice was joined on the line. Wottinger looked to have the race after the last, but Jack Teal galvanized his mount up the straight to join Dawson on the line. Fire In Her Eyes showed minor promise in Ireland, however has pleased her trainer since joining his team “she gave me some feel there…Ben at home said she felt better than a pointer” said the winning trainer. Wottinger was having his first start of the year after several placed efforts last season, he is another successful produce of Nunstainton stud, run by John’s brother Chris “he’s a really nice horse and we’ve always loved him” said John. The Dale Peters trained Destination Mahler was sent off favourite but could only manage a distant third, but will no doubt come good in due course. The opening race was a level 2 Conditions race and went the way of the improving 7yo Lagan Valley under James King. The son of Shirocco galloped on strongly up the home straight to fend off the strong late finish of Darius Des Sources and Lois Teal who put in another bold display, whilst Red Opium put up an excellent effort on her seasonal return in third.
