ENTRIES NOTICE Making entries online for partnership & syndicate owned horses This season we have altered the way Point-to-Point partnerships/syndicates are registered in order to make the Leading Owners Table a more accurate reflection of who owns the horses.
Why change? Traditionally, although horses have run under a partnership/syndicate name, the actual registration of the horse has been against the lead partner of the ownership. Meaning that when the partnership/syndicate horse won, it was the lead partners name which was published in the Leading Owner Table. The new way of registration means we will register the horse directly onto the partnership/syndicate racing name. This means that if horses owned under this ownership style win, the full partnership/ syndicate name will appear in the Leading Owners Table, and not the name of the lead partner. This offers a more transparent view of the ownership of the horses and gives the opportunity for racing ownerships to see themselves listed on the leaderboard.
How does this impact Owners/Keepers? Making this change can impact how entries are made for horses under these types of ownerships. Many of you are probably used to logging into the entries site as “lead partner” in your sole name; from this season, for any partnership/syndicate owned horses, you will no longer see these under your sole account. On the hunter cert, there is an option to pick who can make entries online, the “Owner” or the “Keeper”. One of these options will need to be ticked. If “Owner” is selected, this means a new username and password will be created for the racing partnership/syndicate to access the Point-to-Point Entries website. The lead partner will need to use these new details to make entries online. If you are in a partnership/syndicate, you will receive a unique and new username and password for this ownership upon registration of the Hunter Certificate. Please ensure you check the confirmation letter sent out by email from huntercerts@weatherbys.co.uk as this will contain the new login details as appropriate. An alternative email address is required for partnership/syndicate accounts, as the same email address on multiple accounts can’t be accommodated at this time.
What if I prefer my Keeper to make the entries online for me? That is still an option for any partnership/syndicate registered horses. On the hunter cert, select the “Keeper” as having the online entry access. The “Keeper” will then be able to make entries as if the horse were in a sole or lead partner name.

ON THE CLOCK There is always a sense of anticipation ahead of the first Larkhill meetings. It’s indicative of the season gathering pace, spreading out from the early West Country centric meetings, and regularly sees some of the sport’s top performers beginning to flex their muscles. Lasty weekend’s Hursley Hambledon meeting was no exception. On perfect ground and in front of a decent sized crowd, there was much to cheer on what became an increasingly dark and dank day. First up was a young horse maiden run over the shorter two and a half mile trip. There were many unexposed types on show with the Chris Barber Two Becomes One sent off favourite. However, he weakened out of things on the run for home with victory ultimately going to My Lucky Star (90) in a good finish with Glenmount (90). The winner, cheaply bought and with a largely undistinguished pedigree, is rumoured to be now heading for the sales but if returns to pointing he is clearly good enough to land a Restricted – even two. The runner up, the paddock pick who also had experience on his side having run in four Irish points, led for much of the last half mile and was only run out of things on the run to the line. He can improve. Both winner and runner-up could however be counted a shade fortunate as Casting Aspersions (91) looked to be going best of all when hitting the front at the second last, only to crumple on landing. He was another to take the eye in the paddock and can surely atone before long. Viroflay (79) took the following Ladies Open in good style showing none of jumping frailties that had blighted his later season Hunter Chase efforts. The setting of a slow pace from the front suited him down to the ground as his the ability to clock fast closing sectionals was well documented last season. This win puts him well on the path to of a defence of his Coronation Cup title. The highlight of the day however was the Restricted . This brought together unbeaten point winners Coolagh Park and Regatta de Blanc along with Douglas Longbottom who had shown promise behind Saunton Surf in the Aintree point-to-point bumper. The race itself did not disappoint. Coolagh Park set a brisk pace from the outset, one which had the majority of the field in trouble 5 from home. However, Regatta de Blanc (113) had travelled smoothly in his slipstream and quickened smartly into the lead three from home and fairly sauntered up the home straight with matters well in control. A deeply impressive victory and one that suggests the world is her oyster. Douglas Longbottom (108) a strong sort with an impressive stride, could not match the winner’s turn of foot but nevertheless kept on gamely for second and seems set for a good season. Coolagh Park (108), although running creditably, was in truth a tad disappointing. He had looked an exciting prospect after two previous large margin victories but surrendered the lead rather tamely here. However, he has been very sparingly campaigned in recent seasons and, taken down early to the start here, is clearly not straightforward to train. It is conceivable he was just in need of the run, as some of his stables other runners, such as I K Brunel, have also appeared to not quite get home. That said the time of this race suggests he should have little problem regaining the winning thread.

TRAINER TALK: HANNAH ROACH
BY RORY ALKIN WEST MERCIAN AREA PRESS OFFICER
The Creadan Rogue (noseband) gamely landed his Intermediate at Dunsmore Photo Tim Holt First-season Trainer Hannah Roach came back from her summer holiday in Cyprus and received a surprise call from Joe O’Shea for whom she had worked for the previous six seasons. He told her that he was thinking of retiring after training for thirty-five years, and he would like her to take over the stable. Although Hannah had only recently celebrated her twenty first birthday, she did not take long to seize the opportunity, when she found out that the owners had welcomed the change. Hannah who grew up in a small holding in Nantwich, was always interested in horses and started riding when she was five. She visited O’Shea’s yard at Swanley Lane near her home in Nantwich, and soon started working parttime alongside her studies. She quickly learnt her skills and was an integral part of O’Shea’s successes including the Aintree Foxhunters victory with Cousin Pascal.
weekends of the season. She is looking forward to more success with her current string of ten horses. Time Leader is the horse Hannah is most looking forward to this campaign. Having had modest form in previous stables, the nine-year-old gelding improved greatly through last season, which started with a runaway win of a Conditions Race at Knightwick on the opening day. He followed up with four Hunter Chase wins and was only beaten by just over six lengths in the Aintree Foxhunters, finishing fifth to Famous Clermont.
Iskandar Pecos
She said, “Joe has taught me everything and if I can be half as successful as him, I will be thrilled.” Her hard work and attention to detail will stand her in good stead. The horses are driven most days to Broxton Gallops some ten miles away and Joe still helps with driving a horsebox and riding out. Hannah has taken to her new role in great fashion with two winners in the first two The stable has high hopes for Time Leader (noseband) Photo Tim Holt

Willewonga is back in good form Photo Graham Fisher
Time Leader has continued where he left off, easily winning an Open at Barbury earlier this month. He will probably go for another point and then be campaigned for the Foxhunters again, with the Walrus at Haydock an earlier target. Hannah’s other early season winner was The Creadan Rogue who won a hard-fought Intermediate at Dunsmore on the opening day of the season. The eight-year-old Scorpion gelding, owned by stable stalwart Derek Malam, came to the yard in the middle of last season having previously won points for Gordon Elliott in Ireland. He has improved physically and is in rude health this season. He will be aimed at hunter chases with the Intermediate Final at Cheltenham a target, a race which the same owner won with Lilbitluso in 2016. Another horse that will be aimed at the hunter chase route is Willewonga, who had a leg after
the Brocklesby in February and was given time to recover. He has had a wind operation over the summer and has developed well into his frame. He has already won four points and at the age of seven, still has loads of potential.
Another Maiden is the four-year-old Maltese Joe, who was bought by Joe O’Shea at Goffs two years ago and is owned by Tom Greenwood. He was unplaced on debut at Dunsmore but is expected to pick up races in time.
Hannah bought the five-year-old Iskandar Pekos from the Tom Ellis stable last spring, and he duly won a Maiden at Askham Bryan and a Restricted at Tabley. He is very relaxed and laidback, and he will try and win another Restricted with a penalty before being aimed higher. Towards the end of last season Joe O’Shea acquired Mexican Boy from the Olly Murphy stable. The seven-year-old grey was a Maiden under rules and had one run for the stable in a Maiden Hunter Chase at Cartmel at the end of May, finishing a credible runner-up. Hannah thinks very highly of this gelding, and he is expected to graduate through the ranks, starting off in Maiden company.

REPORTS THE HURSLEY HAMBLEDON HUNT
SUNDAY 26TH NOVEMBER 2023 By Bob Bracher A decent crowd at Larkhill enjoyed a competitive day’s racing where the weather took a turn for the worse as the meeting progressed and the visibility made it difficult to see how the races unfolded. There were a number of firsts among the six winners and the highlights were the victories of Viroflay in the Ladies race and Regatta De Blanc in a very competitive Restricted race. Away from the racing it was confirmed that the lease for the next 25 years had been finally signed thus securing the future of the course for the immediate future, which is a real shot in the arm for the future of point to pointing. The young horse Maiden looked a competitive race with ten of the eleven entries facing the starter. The fall of Casting Aspersions at the second last fence when travelling well looked to have presented the race to Glenmount ridden by James King but staying on best was My Lucky Star ridden by Rob David and trained by Harry Ryall. The 4-year-old filly was having her first race for her connections The My Lucky Star Partnership consisting of Harry, Matt Morton and George Rogers. Bought by Harry at Doncaster in May for £8000, she was described as ‘being very weak but had strengthened over the summer’ and they had been hopeful that she would put in a good performance. Rob,28, was recording his second victory for Harry this season who he now works for and his fifth overall win in England. In addition, he had a spell in Australia where he rode four winners but remains eligible for rides in the Grassroot series. The filly is quite likely to be entered in a forthcoming sale and Rob was keen to stress that she ‘will stay further and is one for the future.’ Viroflay was a comfortable winner of the Ladies race and recorded his third course victory for his owners Paul Nicholls and John Bolton. Making most of the running for his usual pilot Olive Nicholls he put in a number of bold leaps and had his main rival I K Brunel in trouble as they approached the second last. This was Olive’s first training success with her first runner from her yard alongside her mother Georgina at Kingston Lisle, Oxfordshire where she has a number of youngsters which she hopes to run in point-
Racegoers at the bookmakers for the last race at Larkhill. Photo: Tim Holt to-point Bumpers in the spring. Viroflay is likely to return to Larkhill again with the defence of his 2023 Coronation Gold Cup triumph on his agenda, and a possible tilt at Hunter Chases in the spring. The Mens Open produced the longest price winner of the day when Teescomponentsfly ridden by Jack Stenhouse prevailed by a neck over Mitchouka ridden by Charlie Case. Trained by Mike Vanstone at Rackenford, Devon for the Borders Club who consist of Mike and John and Karen Stenhouse, who are the parents of Jack. Jack hails from Galashiels on the Scottish borders and having ridden a few times in the North he decided to move south in July to join the licensed yard of Linda Blackford and her partner Mike. The horse was bought for him to ride point to points and he has now given his 18-year-old rider his first career victory. Explaining his first run at Badbury Jack said that ‘the gelding found it much too soft’ and ‘this better ground suited him well.’ The Restricted race was a much-anticipated race with a number of promising sorts amongst the eight strong field. The unbeaten Coolagh Park ridden by Izzie Marshall set off in front and was followed for much of the race by Douglas Longbottom ridden by Martin ‘Fly’ McIntyre and Regatta De Blanc partnered by Will Biddick. At the second last Will sent his mare to the front and he soon went clear to record an impressive victory for the unbeaten mare. Owned by the Pendil Partnership headed by Rupert Swallow, the mare was welcomed into the winners enclosure by a large number of the partnership to loud cheers. Rupert has a goal of attracting 3000 members to the partnership for 21- to 40-year-olds at £75 per
#gopointing 14
share and broadening the interest in horse racing both under rules and point-to-point racing. Will, who is now based at his new establishment at Queen Camel, Yeovil, on his father -in- law Rupert Nuttall’s farm, was saddling his first winner from the yard and is likely to be the first of many. The mare will remain pointing this season and possibly next with one of the Hunter Chases at Cheltenham in May a likely long-term target. Olive Nicholls secured a double on the day when steering the veteran Shantou Flyer to victory in the Veterans Race. Approaching the age of 14, the gelding owned by Paul Nicholls and trained by Sam Loxton shows no sign of slowing down and despite his welter burden of 12stone 10 pounds his class showed when defeating Myth Buster ridden by Lily Bradstock. Described by his trainer as the ‘yard 3-year-old’, he will continue to run in points and may also run in Hunter Chases again this season. Martin’ Fly’ McIntyre set off in front aboard St Patrick’s Bridge in the concluding Maiden race and after fending off the attentions of Imaginaire, ridden by Ed Vaughan, he drew clear on the flat. Owned by the Fergal O’Brien Partnership 4 and arranged by Sally Randell, he had placed form over Hurdles and now in the care of Myles Osborne, an ambitious programme had been planned for him before his pointing debut. Myles explained that ‘the Intermediate final at Cheltenham in May is the goal’ and expressed his gratitude for the chance to train the gelding for the partnership. Intended to be ridden by Tom Broughton, a broken collar bone last Monday had changed the riding arrangements but Fly proved to be an admirable substitute for the gelding.
