ON THE CLOCK A relatively low-key weekend from a time perspective, with soft ground and small fields impacting the pace of several of the better-quality events. Nevertheless there were a couple of interesting maidens. Let’s Sail Away (93) took the short maiden at Larkhill in ready fashion albeit showing plenty of greenness. He has a high class pointing pedigree being a half-brother to the prolific Twig and 133-rated Skidoosh. Unsurprisingly, he is reported to be heading to the sales. Runner-up All Night Parking (96) is steadily improving. To the fore for most of the contest, he did not have the turn of foot of the ready winner, giving the impression that he will benefit from a return to three miles. Down at Wadebridge Risk de Pluie (FR) (95) put his experience to good use when landing the all aged maiden. He had had a couple of educational outings in Irish point-to-points followed by a decent effort first time up at Badbury Rings – where the two and a half miles was probably on the short side. Here, jumping soundly, he made smooth headway going out on the final circuit and powered up the final climb to win going away. A son of No Risk At All, best known as the sire of Champion Hurdler Epatante, he looks sure to build on this. Ocojohn (94) ran a solid race in second, possibly given too much to do. He has shown enough to suggest he can take an average maiden.

ARTICLE WRITTEN BY POINT-TO-POINT AUTHORITY

Will - left - initiating an Alnwick double in January on Coole Hall Photo: Grace Beresford

Jockey Start is a new initiative aimed at launching the careers of prospective jockeys through point-to-pointing and is the brainchild of former rider Will Ramsay, who has just hung up his boots aged 54 and is Chair of the Berwickshire point-to-point as well as CEO of the Affordable Art Fair. The concept behind Jockey Start is that owners lease older horses as schoolmasters to sponsors, who pay the training fees (discounted by trainers) and help pay for the rider licences and equipment. New jockeys, who would otherwise not have the opportunity, are given a horse to ride in races and provided with coaching by the trainers. The aim is not only to provide an introduction to race-riding for jockeys, but to attract staff for trainers. Initially, Jockey Start is focusing on the Northern area as a pilot scheme, but Will hopes to expand it nationwide in subsequent seasons and has already had applications from southern-based riders. Jockey Start is kicking-off by leasing Coole Hall – who Will used to ride in point-topoints – from Rose Dobbin, and he is also hoping to lease a second horse should enough sponsors come forward to support a second horse and rider. The PPA spoke to Will recently about the Jockey Start initiative.

the number of amateurs like myself reducing, that we get more people riding in point-topoints and increase runners – it’s the grass roots of jump racing. What do sponsors get out? It’s rewarding to be giving something back in this philanthropic way of supporting the sport we love. It’s about helping, and taking part, not just winning! What progress have you made? Eight jockeys have applied so far, including Abi Reid (pictured) and we have several strong candidates. We’re hoping to have two jockeys per horse and offer them a minimum of three rides each. We also have half a dozen interested sponsors, although it’s still early days and momentum is building, and we’ve designed a logo – we’re going to promote Jockey Start through the Multi-Horse Sponsorship Scheme.

Will with Coole Hall and groom Kim Birkett

How are you promoting Jockey Start? We’re sending emails and talking directly to the racing and pointing community, in particular owners and trainers in the Northern Area, and doing a lot of social media.

How does the scheme work? We’re trying to get together syndicates and individuals to sponsor jockeys. If owners have a schoolmaster or older horse to go pointing, we hope they might get involved. The keeper would then train the horse at a discounted rate and educate the jockey, which helps in attracting and retaining staff, which can be a struggle. How will it benefit jockeys? It gives them an opportunity they wouldn’t otherwise have – they’re the riders (and volunteers) of the future. It’s important, with

REPORTS THE NEW FOREST HOUNDS

SUNDAY 10 DECEMBER 2023 By Bob Bracher It was definitely a day of two halves with the weather making the first half of the New Forest meeting very wet with spectators seeking cover and the visibility made the first three races very difficult to follow. However, the sun made a welcome appearance for the final two races and the day finished in bright clear winter sunshine. On the course there was a riding double for James King, a first training success and the first winners this season for three riders. Teetotaller was a comfortable winner of the Flat race sponsored by Merlin Ferris under a strong ride under the champion jockey Will Biddick. Trained by Myles Osborne for a partnership consisting of Gavin Mennell, Robert Logan and Sue and George Coneyworths, Gavin explained that they had bought the gelding as a 3-year-old store and had been patient with him. Hailing from Hull, Gavin had had a four and a half hours trip to the course but was delighted he had made the effort. A full brother to the recent Badger Beer winner Blackjack Magic, he is now likely to go into training with Fergal O’Brien and a Hurdles campaign will be planned for him. The Four- and Five-Year-Old Maiden race sponsored by GG Law produced an impressive winner in the form of Let’s Sail Away ridden by James King for trainer Eamonn O’Donnabhain. Making his racecourse debut he showed a good turn of foot from the last fence to beat his 11 rivals comfortably. A home bred gelding who is a half-brother to the prolific Twig he is owned by Laurie and Alicia Strangman from Buckinghamshire. They have decided to send this gelding to the sales as they have others as home including Ivetwiggedit who won three races last season for Tom Lacey where Eamonn is his Head Lad. James completed his double in facile style when Grace a Vous Enki was too good for his rivals in the Mixed Open race sponsored by Southwick Court Fine Wines. Previously trained by Paul Nicholls for his owner Joan Hitchings, the wife of Clive, he had rather lost his way under rules but a switch to Nicky Sheppard’s stable seems to have transformed him. With the more fancied rivals disappointing he was followed home by the

Jockeys go out for Maiden 4&5yo, 2m4f. Photo: Tim Holt veteran Step Back ridden by Lily Bradstock. On the evidence of this outing the winner looks one to follow this season. Happy Day Emery was a short price to win the Restricted race sponsored by Earlcoate Construction but a shuddering error at the second last fence put him on the back foot and allowed My Brother John, who had been held up by his rider Walter Barnett, to come sweeping by on the outside and record a six lengths victory. Recording only his second career win and the first this season Walter, 20, who comes from Newton Abbott is now the Novice Rider based at Alan Hill’s yard. Explaining how the role came about, his mother saw an advert for the post and after speaking to Lawney he joined the yard last season. Describing this as a ‘brilliant job’ he was grateful to joint owner Ian Cobbold for the chance to ride the gelding. Acey Milan was always prominent in the Conditions Race sponsored by Le Mieux and had six lengths in hand over the fast-finishing Palmaria ridden by Ella Ortewell. Ridden by Chad Bament for his employer NH trainer

#gopointing 11

Anthony Honeyball he had experienced a slipping saddle after being jumped into at the second last but managed to keep everything in place on the run in. Recording his third consecutive victory this former classy individual who started as favourite for the 2018 Cheltenham Bumper is enjoying his experiences in the point-to-point field and has now given his capable rider his eighth career victory and the first for the current season. Horizon D’Ainay was a comfortable winner of the Six Years and Over Maiden race sponsored by Fawcetts. Trained by Justin Brotherton for the Pitchfork Partnership he was recording a first victory for his trainer who is based in Broadway, Worcestershire, and has four horses for this pointing season alongside some breakers and pre-trainers. Acquired privately from Dan Skelton where he was placed several times over hurdles, he has thrived in a smaller yard and even had a spin in the Newmarket Town Plate where he finished seventh under Abigail, Justin’s wife. Ridden by Toby McCain-Mitchell the jockey was recording his sixteenth career win including one Hunter Chase and his first for

REPORTS THE CORNWALL HUNT CLUB SUNDAY 10 DECEMBER 2023 By Granville Taylor

HEAVY rain during the morning had cleared by noon for the Cornwall Club fixture at the Royal Cornwall showground, Wadebridge, on Sunday (Dec 10). The track had held up well after the incessant December rain but certainly demanded stamina, something not lacking in the Ladies’ Open winner Singapore Saga. John Heard’s likeable mare found a new partner in 10 times Ladies’ champion jockey Gina Andrews, who had made the four hour trip from Warwickshire to take her first mount of the season. It was not all plain sailing however, since the hot favourite was taken on first by Checkitout (Heidi Stevens) from the top of the hill, then by the veteran pointer Hawkhurst (Izzy Marshall), who hit the front along the bottom bend. Gina Andrews mount had drawn level again at the last though and would not be denied as the pair slugged it out up the climb to the judge. “She didn’t really enjoy the ground but I was confident we would win from the third last,” said Gina. Trainer John Heard added, “Singapore Saga will stay pointing this season. I thought she was straight enough today and we will probably come back to Wadebridge after Christmas (January 7th). She loves this track,” Chloe Emsley has been the Devon & Cornwall lady jockeys title holder for the past two seasons, and had steered Wind Tor into third place in the Ladies’ Open. She was in the

winner’s spot as her mount Risk de Pluie ran away with the 11-runner Maiden. This fouryear-old led from the 15th and drew right away round the final bend to win as he liked. The gelding, by popular stallion No Risk At All, is owned and trained by the rider’s partner Stuart Payne, who said, “Risk de Pluie disappointed us at the Portman a month ago but we found his blood was wrong. He came from Doncaster sales and has shown ability at home. We think a lot of him but he is still a bit weak. As a winning four-year-old I expect he will go to the sales.” The Maiden winner had started at 20-1 and punters were in for another shock as 16-1 outsider Ellipsism denied the hot favourite Halo des Obeaux (Ed Vaughan) to take the Men’s Open. The winner’s gallant owner/ trainer, Cullompton farrier Jack Veysey, was taking his career total into double figures as his mount would not let the runner up past him on the stamina sapping climb to the line. “I ride him out and knew he was very fit and he likes to be handy (he had run well recently when second at the East Cornwall with today’s Conditions winner Itacare back in third). The aforementioned Itacare gave 16-yearold Rian Corcoran his first point-to-point winner in the colours of Somerset Racing in the Conditions race for Veteran and Novice Riders’. The young rider had his mount in front at the third last and the pair stayed on stylishly to win comfortably from Franigane (George Edgedale). The winner, now trained

#gopointing 12

by Rian’s father, ex-jockey Liam Corcoran, was sourced from David Pipe who suggested he might make a point to pointer. “I work for Will Biddick and this is my third ride. My long term ambition is to be a professional jockey,” said Rian. Megan Lawrence was also a first time winner, this time in the training ranks, as Minella Jab stayed on strongly to beat Bang on Target in the Intermediate. The winner runs in the colours of Megan’s aunt Carol Lawrence and joined her niece’s yard at Halwill last September after a couple of point-to –point wins. Megan has an eventing background and rides out the two pointers in her care. “I would like to aim him at the Exeter Intermediate Final, “said the 24-year-old trainer. Jockey Darren Andrews, who enjoyed his best season with 20 pointing winners last year, was opening his account for this season and said, “I was told not to hit the front too soon but got a lovely run up the inner at the third last,” Josh Newman had to settle for second place in the Intermediate, but reached the winner’s enclosure on Hearts Corner in the concluding Restricted. This six-year-old kept jumping to the right but was left clear when the favourite Mary’s Fortune came down with Ed Vaughan at the penultimate. “He is a big, raw horse who has his own way of jumping and idled in front, “said the jockey, who also trains the gelding for owner Becky Kealey.
