THIS WEEK’S GRASS ROOTS STORY

An event of any kind takes a huge amount of strategic planning and organisation-let alone one with human and equine competitors.

Following The Hursley Hambledons meeting at Larkhill on Sunday I asked Secretary Oona Hickson to give me an insight into the organising and running of a pointto-point meeting.

WEST MERCIAN AREA RACES

SUNDAY 8TH DECEMBER 2024

Any jumping fans searching for preChristmas Cheltenham Festival clues could do worse than make the journey to Chaddesley Corbett’s first meeting of the new pointing term this Sunday (December 8th).

The meeting has attracted a decent entry of 86 horses for the six-race card with an 11.00 official off time for the opener and booking tickets in advance is advised as it’s expected to be a busy day all round.

Potentially the equine star on show will be the Nickie Sheppard-trained Ihandaya as he could emerge as Britain’s best hope of victory in the St James’s Place Open Hunters’ Chase at Cheltenham next March. The home team saw off the Irish challenge in the race last term thanks to the battling qualities of Sine Nomine and it is hoped that the progressive Ihandaya can maintain his ascendency up the ladder and follow in his footsteps.

Since joining the Sheppard team, the 6yo has done nothing but pass every test he has faced and, as a result, is unbeaten in all four starts for the trainer along with his enthusiastic owner Clive Hitchings.

He has already won twice around the twists and turns of Chaddesley Corbett so obviously handles the course and boasts winning form on most types of going so ground conditions should not pose a problem.

Of his likely rivals last season’s Lady Dudley Cup hero Jeux D’eau comes into the reckoning as he clocked a faster time when winning that contest than Ihandaya posted with victory in a match earlier on the same card at the circuit last April.

Will Biddick is expected to make the trip from his West Country base to partner either Il Pino or the very interesting My Drogo and both are worthy of plenty of interest.

Il Pino looked to have a bright future when scoring on this card two years ago but has had only a couple of runs since while My Drogo was very highly rated in his early days under Rules but was disappointingly pulled up on his last start 10 months ago

My Drogo also holds an entry in Conditions contest over 2m 4f earlier on the card

and that may prove more to his liking while the once very smart Saint Calvados, now owned by David Maxwell, would be another runner worthy of more than a second glance.

The card opens with a 4yo Maiden where many of the usual suspects have runners and paddock inspection along with a look at the bookmakers’ boards will probably prove much more enlightening on the day.

The trio that catch the eye on paper are Avichi In The Park (Bradley Gibbs), Gloria Gainer (Tom Scudamore) and Sienna Earth (Will Biddick), representing the Il Pino team who scooped the corresponding prize in 2022.

The aforementioned My Drogo would be of obvious interest in the 2m 4f Conditions race but he may not get it all his own way as Glenmount proved a model of consistency last year for his owners – the 360 Racing Club – who are headed by new PPA supremo Paul Miller

Trained by Julie Wadland, the 6-year-old can make the most of any chink in My Drogo’s armour while Knightwick scorer

Barton Snow, who represents the very much in-form Hannah Roach team is another to consider

The Restricted has attracted 15 entries and it appears a very tight contest on paper with preference going to last term’s Dalton Park winner It’s A Diamond, who has since joined Will Biddick and Cheytac, making his debut for the Gina Andrews yard after winning in Ireland.

There was plenty of market confidence behind Fan Club Aulmes on his return from a long absence at Knightwick and he was unlucky to bump into the rejuvenated Killer Clown. He can make amends with Blagthebookies an each way alternative.

The 5yo And Over Maiden concludes the action and it is yet another competitive looking affair It might pay to take a chance with the ex-Irish Ideal Du Tabert, who has joined Laura Richardson and Mythe Bridge is another to consider at decent odds.

CORNWALL HUNT CLUB

SUNDAY 8TH DECEMBER 2024

The first of two meetings at Wadebridge takes place on Sunday, at the Royal Cornwall Showground (PL27 7JE), this time hosted by the Cornwall Club with the first race due off at 11:30am. £15 entry which includes a racecard. Accompanied under 16’s go free and dogs are welcome but must be kept on non-retractable leads at all times.

There are 73 entries across 7 races, with the Maiden already splitting before the day. It will be the first Wadebridge meeting in what I can only imagine, a long time, that will have the absence of long-time reporter and huge enthusiast, Granville Taylor, who sadly passed away on Monday morning. He will be missed hugely by the whole of the Devon and Cornwall Point To Point Area.

Race 1 Conditions (Level 2) Race for Veteran and Novice Riders

The largest possible field on the card comes from the Mr A & Mrs K Haywood Conditions (Level 2) Race for Veteran and Novice Riders with 15 entered. Divilskin is an interesting

entry after fetching 245,000GNS to Tom Malone and Paul Nicholls after winning an Irish Maiden Point. A short stint with Paul soon saw him move back to Ireland to his original handler, where he went on to win two more Point to Points. Fighter Allen was once rated 144 for Willie Mullins and after changing hands and moving to David Pipe, he might find some of his old form with the switch to Points. Stablemate Sidi Ismael and Givega for Luca Morgan are both highly rated ex-National Hunt horses, who could both be interesting contenders. Itacare won at both Wadebridge meetings last season and is sure to enjoy the track for promising young jockey, Rian Corcoran. The Kings Writ and His Own Star both held their own last season and are professional seasonal campaigners, who always run well.

Race 2 Maiden Division 1

Talimar Pearl looks to be the standout for Division 1 of the Higher Tregawne Holiday Cottages Maiden. He has been runner up on three occasions over hurdles for Joe Tizzard

and has since switched to Champion Point to Point trainer, Joshua Newman. Irish Point to Point recruits in Ted The Thief (Joshua Newman) and Emmas Wish (John Heard) are the most likely challengers. Emmas Wish receives a 14lb age allowance, which could prove to be crucial if the ground is hard work and testing.

Race 3 Maiden Division 2

The Bushen Bars Division 2 of the Maiden looks like it could be a battle between They Call Me Hugo and El Capitaine They Call Me Hugo for Tom Malone, was purchased out of Harley Dunnes yard for €30,000 after finishing 3rd on heavy ground. El Capitaine, another from Joshua Newman’s yard, brings some very solid National Hunt form to the track having only been beaten 4.5 lengths by Buddy One, who was placed in Grade 1s at both Cheltenham and Aintree Festival. He has fitness on his side, having finished 2nd at the season opener meeting at Knightwick.

Race 4 Ladies Open

The Moores of St Wenn Ladies Open could be a thriller if they all run. Last season’s Exeter Intermediate Hunter Chase Final winner, Hearts Corner, looks an interesting runner, along with Young Buck with Jo Supple booked to ride for handler Emma Summersby. Emma has taken over the running of the Point to Pointers with husband Dean taking out a National Hunt license Strong stayer, The Kings Writ, could throw his hand into the ring along with Pileon, who won last season, for handler Laura Jones. Didero Vallis knows his way around a racetrack having run at all the big meetings for Venetia Williams and stays all day, so could prove to be a fun recruit for young trainer Olive Nicholls with Molly Landau booked to ride

Race 5 Mens Open

There are 11 high quality entries for the R J Trevarthan Ltd Mens Open. Fighter Allen, Sidi Ismael and Itacare all hold entries in this along with the Conditions Race. Another Furlough (Harry Ryall) came home alone at Badbury Rings when taking the Mixed Open but posted decent form last season when beating Duc de

Bourbon. Tip Top Mountain was a ready winner at Dunsmore after being purchased by The Garton Partnership and won his Maiden here back in 2020, before going on to win 7 chases under rules. Two-time Grade 2 winner Angels Breath has an entry for father and son duo, Tim and Ed Vaughan, was once rated as high as 151 and could enjoy the switch to Points. Young Buck holds an entry in this race along with the Ladies, but both look stiff tasks. Quintin’s Man deserves a mention after winning a Hunter Chase at Wincanton last season impressively but is suited to a more galloping track.

Race 6 Intermediate

Jet Smart, for Emma Summersby, will need to overcome a hefty 10lb penalty to bring home the spoils in the Exeter Racecourse

Intermediate A seriously progressive sort last season who won five races from six runs. Holiday Fund brings race fitness to the track having won on seasonal debut for Joshua Newman at Dunsmore. Tom Malone’s Divilskins could find this an easier option than the Conditions Race but would have to carry a 5lb penalty All Loved Up gave Hugh Lillingston, son of Luke Lillingston of Mount Coote Stud in

Ireland, a first winner at Larkhill last season and ran very creditably therefore after With the 7lb mares allowance, this could prove very helpful to counteract the 5lb penalty for winning a Conditions. Assassins Lullaby (Janet Ackner) won the Restricted at Badbury Rings and Soldier Unknown could make the long trip down worthwhile for Alan Hill and daughter in law, Izzie Hill. He is thought a lot of by connections and won three races last season.

Race 7 Restricted

The last race on the card, the North Cornwall Supporters Club Restricted, has 10 entries with Holiday Fund featuring with a 5lb penalty Stablemate Clondaw Drake, won well at Dunsmore and looks to head the market. My Lucky Star gave Will Higgs a dream first ride to just be touched off at Badbury Rings by Assassins Lullaby and could give his young trainer, Harry Ryall, another winner after a good start to his season. Summer Jam finished behind Holiday Fund at Dunsmore and could make the trip down from Herefordshire after handler, Christopher Barber, moved premises during the summer

SOUTH MIDLANDS AREA PRESS OFFICER

TRAINER TALK: NICKIE SHEPPARD BY JAKE EXELBY

Nickie Sheppard, who was responsible for 2023/2024 leading horse Grace A Vous Enki as well as the exciting Ihandaya, trains pointto-pointers at Eastnor in Herefordshire – where husband Matt holds a rules licence – alongside her duties as joint-secretary of the West Mercian Area. They both rode successfully in their day, and Matt was the named trainer of the pointers when they moved to Eastnor 30 years ago, before turning professional in 1996. Jake Exelby visited the couple in advance of the new season to learn about their background, find out how Nickie reinvigorated ‘Eric’ last year and discover whether a repeat might be on the cards.

“I was one of the first pointing trainers to take out a licence,” confirms Matt, as we watch Nickie (on A Jet Of Our Own) lead five of her string round the picturesque gallops in front of Eastnor Castle (following Nickie are Charlotte Trealeven [Yippee Ki Yay], Laura Wallis [Grace A Vous Enki], Daisy Cardew [Blackijo Dagrostis], Lucy Lightwood [Ihandaya] and Libby Gleeson [Nelson Tasmin]). “We both ride out – sharing five lots between us and do everything ourselves. We’re flexible and have lots of part-time staff It’s easier for part-timers to come and ride out – jockeys find it hard to ride out in the mornings when they’re racing that afternoon.”

Matt explains how the couple became the first people to train on the Eastnor Estate “We got married in 1993 and were looking for somewhere to live (Former PPORA Chair) Robert Killen was the agent at Forthampton, where Nickie’s parents lived, and he found it for

us. We use the gallops and schooling fences on the estate land – these are our facilities, and I think I’m the only licenced trainer not to have an all-weather gallop, so we have to go on the grass all year round.”

“I originally went professional because the pointing season was shorter then, I needed to earn money and didn’t want to keep working in the Sun Valley chicken factory!” admits Matt. “I used the money from my shiftwork to buy breeze blocks and built the stables myself Nickie was head groom. We used to send our pointers under rules for the summer jumping but do it less now as it’s so much more competitive – the prize money is higher, so you have runners from trainers chasing the championship.”

Back in the yard and over coffee, we talk about the horses that have been part of the Sheppard story “The first winners we trained were a double in March 1994,” recalls Matt. “Nickie won on Deer Fencer at Barbury (it was her first victory in the saddle), and I went to Upton-on-Severn and scored with Knowing.” Other stalwarts of the early years included the likes of Cruise A Hoop, Lets Twist Again, Master Eryl, Now We Know and Stag Fight Horses like that kicked it off pretty well for us. They were owned by local people and local syndicates – you need that kind of support in pointing and it helped that (former multiple champion jockey) Julian Pritchard rode them. You could get involved in a syndicate for little money then, but you need to spend more now if you want a nice horse, and you can’t win races with moderate horses any more.”

Another well-known pointer for the Sheppards – and Nickie’s first champion horse, 20 years before her second, was Upton Adventure, who took the title by winning eight races (out of a career total of 26) in 2004. “She was a pony – barely 16 hands,” reminisces Nickie “Anyone who came here for a day’s trial would ride her and – on the track – she’d only turn into a racehorse in the last mile She pointed her entire life and was a homebred, born in the Welsh Borders. There were lots more local point-to-points then, and she felt like everyone’s horse.”

Grace A Vous Enki had a very different background, as Nickie confirms. “He started off in France as a young horse, then went to Paul Nicholls, where he showed signs of not

liking being in such a big yard Paul suggested a change of scenery, as we’re near where owner Clive Hitchings lives, and he was a real challenge when he arrived. We didn’t know if what we did with him had worked until we got to the racecourse, but he still wanted to do it I think he liked Larkhill so much because it’s a wide track, so he can jump left, and he loves his space and being in front – he thinks he’s in charge – and dislikes being in a string.”

I enquire how champion jockey James King, who’d never ridden for Nickie before last season, got the mount. “He had to have a top jockey on him,” replies Nickie “When he wants to go left, he’ll go left, and we needed a jockey who’d trust the horse James rang me up before his first run, as he didn’t have a ride in the race, I gave him a number for Clive Hitchings, the owner, and he said yes. Being leading horse wasn’t an objective until Clive pointed it out,” admits Nickie “The horse’s welfare came first, and we only went to Mollington (where he won his title-clinching race) because of the championship He won, but didn’t have the same buzz afterwards.”

Recent and historic past covered, we turn to the future as Nickie talks me through plans for the leading lights in her yard “We’ll try to win at all seven Larkhill fixtures with Eric! (They won at the first meeting last weekend). But when you’re at the top, you’re there to be shot at and there’s always a young pretender, another Eric, coming out of training. We’ll keep him to right-handed tracks, although going the other way wasn’t the reason he was beaten in the Lady Dudley Cup – he had pus in his foot, so underperformed.”

“Ihandaya’s possibly the nicest horse we’ve had here,” Nickie continues, as Matt butts in, “Except for Patricks Park!” (who won at Ffos Las for the Sheppards before taking two big handicap chases for Willie Mullins). “He may start at Chaddesley Corbett on Sunday, will be aimed at the Cheltenham Foxhunters and may go for the Lady Dudley Cup after that, as it’s a race that Clive, who also owns him, has always wanted to win.”

“(Dual 2024 Hunter Chase winner) Yippie Ki Yay is owned by the Herberts, who’ve been fantastic supporters,” says Nickie We once sold them a racing pony and it all started from there. They’re lovely people and have been very loyal. Their elder son Milo has retired after going out

on a winner and his younger brother Ivor now has a licence to ride under rules so, if they click, we’ll target Hunter Chases again.”

As for A Jet Of Our Own, third on his seasonal debut at Knightwick and also entered at Chaddesley Corbett on Sunday, “I’m not sure he’s a three-mile horse,” admits Nickie, “Having won over two at Cheltenham and two-and-ahalf at Chaddesley Corbett. We’re aiming him at the Aintree Foxhunters – he’s still got to qualify, but the early season Hunter Chases will suit him.”

Nickie is a keen supporter of hunting and appreciates the role it plays in pointing “The sport is a network of hunting connections – the sort of people who’ll stand in a field watching their horses,” she confirms, before confessing, “I still go out with the Ledbury, but we don’t hunt our pointers. It’s mainly a time issue, but also, pointers cost more so you want to just train them, school them, take them to the races and eliminate the risk of them getting hurt. Although we might take an older horse out for an hour if we meet in the village.”

She has strong views on the future of the sport if further restrictions are placed on hunting under the new government “If it stopped tomorrow, we’d be totally dependent on the landowners to support pointing,” is Nickie’s view. “Some landowners give their course rentfree as their way of raising money for their hunt

– margins are tight in farming, and you give up your land for a point-to-point – so they might start charging. If you have a good committee and sponsors, you’ll survive, but I think we’ll see fewer courses with more fixtures, and you’ll need to be able to move the bends and fences between meetings.”

“I’ve asked all the West Mercian courses whether they’d continue without hunting,” adds Nickie, “And have had more yeses than

noes. So, the passion’s there, but a lot more is needed. Volunteers are a dying breed, so you need sponsors to fund a point-to-point, and insurance is a high cost Hunt meetings use their own insurance, but you can’t do that for a Club fixture.”

“You have to be optimistic,” interjects Matt. “Having seen the schooling at Maisemore Park recently, there’s a real passion from the jockeys, and pointing is a route from pony racing to going conditional.” Nickie agrees with her husband. “Our son Stan (now a leading jumps jockey) came through pony racing and knew so much more than we did because it gave him a brilliant education.” However, as a director of the Pony Racing Authority, Nickie has concerns about that discipline, as she explains. “At a rules meeting, you walk the course with a jockey coach before the pony race and watch the race back and analyse it afterwards. But you don’t have that facility at a point-to-point.

And there’s a gap between ponies and pointing because most parents don’t know about racing – the horses are twice the size, you can’t keep them at home so you need to find a trainer, and you can’t necessarily afford the right horse We need to give them more help.”

And Nickie’s solution? “We need to get jockey coaches more involved in pointing.” Matt chips in again. “And parent coaches!” Nickie sighs at the interruption and goes on. “They should be walking the course before all novice riders’ races, which is a condition (for amateur races) under rules, and you should be able to ring up the coaches, ask them questions, get their help… It needs financing, but we should take the caravan they have under rules to pointto-points, which has equicizers and screens – there’s nothing that shows you more than watching yourself ride, so you know where you are in the context of the race.”

Another subject close to Nickie’s heart is female jockeys. “There are lots of female novices,” she tells me, “Who just need a break, a bit of luck and the right connections – it’s hard for them to get results on moderate horses We need to have more Ladies Opens – they might be up against Gina (Andrews) and Izzie (Hill) but, in a Mixed Open, there would be several of the top men and women. You can give them an allowance but it wouldn’t make any difference.”

Before I leave, I ask Nickie what’s kept her and Matt going through a lifetime in the sport. “It’s been a way of life… all my life. Dad (father – and rider of the prolific Touch Of Tammy – Roger Guilding) got a lot out of it, I’ve done it, Stan started out pointing. It’s hard work, seven days a week, but it’s my career, my livelihood, my way of life. We do less partying now – it’s just lunches! My ambition,” she adds as I ask about her plans, “Is to keep pointing, which I’ve seen change massively, going. It’s in the blood.”

Footnote: when I spoke to Matt a couple of years ago, he was writing a book but told me, “I can’t release it until a couple of people die, as I use real names!” Confessions of a Slow Two Miler, so named because about a quarter of his 220+ winners under rules have been in two-mile chases was published last month and, serendipitously, he won the race he sponsored (a two-mile chase, of course!) to mark the occasion.

ON THE CLOCK

‘Time Leader (120) posted the fastest figure of the weekend’. That’s been a recurring theme over the past three seasons but the accolade is well deserved as Time Leader is a class act-particularly over distances short of three miles. Beaten less than 7 lengths in both the Cheltenham and Aintree Foxhunters, his win at the Border last Sunday was his eighth pointing and hunter chase victory in just fourteen starts. In truth he had little to beat and was sent off at short odds to do so, but could not have been more impressive for his new female pilot and put to bed once and for all the notion that he cannot act on a testing surface. He thoroughly deserves to land one of the season’s premier events.

The majority of race times for the meeting suggested attritional conditions, with several events completed almost two minutes outside the absolute time for the distance, and unsurprisingly perhaps, with connections of other runners at the meeting appearing anxious not to give their charges too testing an examination on their first runs of the season, there were no other time performances of note.

The same appeared true at Larkhill where only Duc du Bourbon (112) clocked a figure close to his form rating. In doing so he took the notable scalp of the erstwhile progressive Paper Mill and in this form, Duc Du Borbon should be able to add to his tally having been a shade disappointing towards the backend of last year With storms forecast for this coming weekend it should prove wise to concentrate on those runners proven on the soft. Nicky Sheppard appears to have an excellent chance of landing the Mixed Open having entered both A Jet of Our Own and the exciting Ihandaya. The latter will be sent off at short odds but it’s worth noting that he ran poorly on his first outing last season and that he may also have to compete against a welter of classy recruits from Rules racing with the likes of My Drogo Lord du Mesnil and Angels Breath all entered. A watching brief is advised. My Drogo also has an entry in the preceding Conditions where Glenmount and Douglas Longbottom are towards the top of the time ratings. Preference is for the good looking Glenmount. Blagthebookies ran poorly at Knightwick and Holkham Hall seems a better bet in the Restricted. He was the only one to give Jet Smart a race on that prolific winner’s first start last year

At Wadebridge Quintin’s Man heads the ratings for the Men’s Open and although sure to suited by the ground, may not like the course’s undulations. He has failed to win on three previous outings at the course Another Furlough has the benefit of a run and can prevail. The value of Clondaw Drake’s win at Dunsmore was hardly enhanced by the runs of the placed horses at Larkhill last weekend, but ratings for fast time winners often outshine those of the horses they beat and he should give a good account in the concluding Restricted.

REPORTS

The Northern Area Point-to-Point season started on a positive note at Hexham with 49 runners on a six race card at the Border fixture, where it was a case of doubles all round for jockey John Dawson and trainer Hannah Roach.

It proved to be a landmark occasion for Dawson, 34, as debutant Carlenrig provided him with a 200th career winner between the flags in the 3m Maiden Race, while Jack The Lad’s victory on debut in the concluding 2m4f Maiden Race was his 250th winner under all codes.

Carlenrig gradually eased his way into contention on the final circuit of the 3m Ward Hadaway Maiden Race before taking it up after two out and the four-yearold stayed on well to score by ten lengths from Jimmy Walton’s promising home-bred mare High On The Hill (Lyall Hodgins).

This Soldier of Fortune gelding, trained by Lesley Coltherd and bought in Ireland as a foal by Ian Herbert, is now for sale at the right price. Coltherd’s son Sam said: “He’s still a bit raw but had schooled really well for me and the heavy ground was ideal.’’ The winner is related to multiple jumps winners including Wee Robbie, Isn’t That Lucky and Blast Freeze

For the record, Dawson’s first Pointing winner came on Benwell in the Cleveland Members Race at Mordon on April 15, 2007.

He doubled up on exciting four-year-old prospect Jack The Lad, who he also trains, and the youngster could not have been more impressive in the attritional underfoot conditions.

Always travelling well and never far behind the leaders in the 2m4f Lycetts Maiden Race, Jack The Lad cruised past Hollywood Harmon (Pippa Brown) as they bypassed three out. In command from the home turn, Dawson’s mount was a dozen lengths clear when diving at the last but didn’t lose much momentum and had doubled that advantage as they crossed the line

Time Leader (Clara Brewitt) initiated a double for in-form Nantwich trainer Hannah Roach in the 2m4f Newton Hall Ladies Open Race.

Always close up, the odds-on favourite was sent on three out and quickly put the race to bed before coasting home twenty-five lengths ahead of Kingrullah (Laura Fenwick).

SUNDAY 1ST DECEMBER 2024

This was a third career winner for Shropshirebased Brewitt, 22, who works for Phil and Mel Rowley. She said: “He made it easy for me on that ground,’’ while Roach added: “His main targets will again be the Cheltenham and Aintree Foxhunters.’’

Lastmonth’sKnightwickscorerRewritetherules (Huw Edwards) provided Roach with a sixth winner from just eight runners this season in the 2m4f Northern Structures Conditions Race.

Sent to the front approaching the home turn, David O’Brien’s rejuvenated ten-year-old gelding forged clear in the straight to score by eighteen lengths from Haverfordwest raider Chilinlikeavillain (Harvey Barfoot-Saunt).

Roach was denied a treble when odds-on favourite Paul Marvel (Huw Edwards) had to settle for second behind Wild Romance (Shay Halton) in the 3m Robson & Cowan Mixed Open Race.

In the leading pair from the off, Halton’s mount drew clear with Paul Marvel from four out and left their rivals trailing well behind on the long downhill run to the next. There still wasn’t much between them at the last before Wild Romance found a bit extra when the chips were down, asserting half-way up the run-in to win, going away, by two-and-a-half lengths.

Runners are saddled ahead of the maiden race

There was a fairytale outcome to the opening 3m Carr’s Billington NPPA Area Conditions Race as Otterburn-based Rebekah Duffy, 22, enjoyed a winning debut ride on former 119-rated hurdler Wild Polly, trained by her boss Susan Corbett.

Produced with a perfectly-timed challenge to head long-time leader Shantou Moon (Paddy Barlow) after touching down at the last, Wild Polly was always doing enough up the long run-in to repel West Lawn’s late thrust by a neck.

On loan to Susan Corbett from Rose Dobbin and one of the three horses in Will Ramsay’s Jockey Start Syndicate, the ten-year-old who hadn’t run between the flags since landing a Largy Mares Maiden contest in April 2018 is related to numerous jumps winners in France including Luzcadou and Le Ponant.

The Tony Ward Memorial Trophy, awarded to the leading jockey at the Haydon and Border fixtures each calendar year, was won by John Dawson (12pts), with the minor placings filled by Huw Edwards (7pts) and Charlotte Tailford (6pts).

The next Northern Area Point-to-Point is the Ratcheugh Racing Club fixture at Alnwick on Sunday, December 15.

HURSLEY HAMBLEDON

SUNDAY 1ST DECEMBER 2024

The first Larkhill meeting did not disappoint! The going after the recent rain was just about perfect, the weather cheered up after a very grey start and the sun came out, the runners were plentiful across the six races and a good crowd thoroughly enjoyed the racing. Fran Nimmo and her stable jockey Zac Baker enjoyed a double, Grace A Vous Enki continued his fine record at the Wiltshire course and a plan hatched in March bore fruit in the opening race

This was a very competitive two-and-ahalf-mile Maiden race where eleven horses faced the starter James King made a very bold show to make all the running aboard Christopher Walker’s grey gelding Sweating Bullets but had just about been headed at the last fence by Sinchi Roca, ridden by Tommie O’Brien, when falling. This left the previously unraced four-year-old Getaway gelding to come clear under a jubilant and vociferous pilot to win by six lengths. Owned by Susan Macauley from Downpatrick Northern Ireland, the gelding had been bred by her late husband Dennis who died last year Dennis was the breeder of the brilliant Brave Inca to whom this gelding is related. Trained by her son-in-law Eamonn O’Donnabhain who is head lad to Tom Lacey in Herefordshire, he admitted that ‘it was quite an emotional victory for the family ‘and that he and Tommie had targeted this race back in March. Having previously won this race two years ago with Matchadam when he first trained a winner in England, Eamonn did indicate that the gelding may now be heading to the sales. His name apparently honours a leading figure in Inca history

The ten entries for the Ladies race were all declared and after Millbank Flyer ridden by Isobel Lever, had taken over the running approaching the final mile, the chasing pursuers closed approaching the third last. Favourite I K Brunel ridden by Izzie Hill, took it up after the second last but Lily Bradstock and Myth Buster stayed on strongly on the run in to score by just over two lengths. Showing the benefit of his seasonal outing at Dunsmore Sara Bradstock said that ‘he did not really enjoy the tight turns at that track but the wide open spaces at Larkhill were much more to his liking’ He still shows the effect of his back operation he had

whilst in Ireland but Sara added that ‘he just wants to please and is a real stayer’.

Grace a Vous Enki continued his love affair with Larkhill when comfortably winning the Mens Open race with his usual pilot James King having an armchair ride albeit jumping out to the left at most of his fences. Watched by his proud owner Joan Hitchings, this was his sixth consecutive victory at Larkhill and his trainer’s husband, Matt Sheppard, indicated that ’he will be coming back for more at future meetings’. It will need a very good horse to lower his colours.

Kilfilum Woods backed up his win at Knightwick when easily winning the Restricted race Acquired out of Paul Webber’s stable by Fran Poste for a syndicate of four owners, he was an eightyear-old maiden but had been showing good form at home before he ran for the stable Adapting different tactics this time by leading, Zac reported that ‘he jumped better in front’ and showed’ how versatile he can be’.

The Conditions race went to Duc De Bourbon ridden by Charlie Sprake and trained and

owned by Sam Loxton. Previously in the ownership of Paul Nicholls and ridden in first outing last season by his daughter Olive, the gelding does have a good partnership with Charlie and this was their second victory together He stayed on well to defeat favourite Paper Mill ridden by Charlie Case, and the pointing newcomer Ask A Honey Bee, ridden by Will Biddick. Sam has no immediate plans for the gelding but may consider running him in hunter chases later in the season.

The final race, the Maiden, had a rather dramatic conclusion. Free the Lion ridden by Fionn Summers, and Celtic Harmony ridden by Rian Corcoran, were battling for the lead approaching the third last when Free the Lion fell and brought down his rival. At the next fence Ilitch the mount of Charlie Case, who had been in contention fell leaving Taymount ridden by Zac Baker, to stay on to hold off the effort of Always Force It, ridden by Darren Andrews. Owned by Charlie and Fran Poste, she described him as ‘immature and still with much to learn’. A full brother to the useful Charles Ritz he is for sale and as Zac summed up has ‘lots of potential’
