ON THE CLOCK

The ex- David Pipe trained hurdler Jet Smart (112) made a ready transition to points when taking the maiden in at Kilworthy Only two finished in this event but the field was closely packed going out on the final circuit and it was only in the closing stages that the race fell apart, a strong pace throughout being too much for most of his rivals to handle Jet Smart had initially shaped with promise over hurdles, notably when finishing fifth to the classy Crambo at Ascot back in 2022, but latterly his career had gone a little off the rails and he had pulled up on his previous start. There were no such problems here however, and he justified favouritism in good style giving the impression of being a strong stayer The time of the race was surprisingly fast with a resultant figure some 11lbs higher than his form rating, but he was rated 110 at his best over hurdles and should have little difficulty in following up in a Restricted. Runner-up Holkham Hall (108) attracted strong market support and can lose his maiden tag in due course He too has a connection to David Pipe, the horses’ dam being a sister to Pipe’s Festival winner, The Package.

The Tedworth card saw two potential top-notchers in action, Wolf Walker (104) and Ihandaya (FR) (112). Both won unchallenged so it was of no surprise that the figures they recorded were some way behind their form ratings. They both have Hunterchase aspirations.

Several performances took the eye at Overton. Paramaribo’s success in the opening contest owed much to the strength of his rider with Joe Wright summoning a good turn of foot from his mount from the last, after the pair had appeared booked for second place A winner over 1m 5f on the Flat, Paramaribo (108) should find further success on the Northern circuit while Not the Chablis (108) may be able to find a Novice riders event.

Another to show a good turn of speed was Fugitive’s Drift (110) when taking the following Conditions Level 2 over the shorter distance of 2m 4f Previously rated as high as 137, he seems on the way back and can go in again

The short maiden went the way of Bellaney Lord (92), who franked the form of It’s a Diamond’s success at the Holderness with a comfortable win from The Back Braes, clocking a figure a couple of pounds ahead of his form rating.

Whilst all the above took place on rain softened ground, none were on ground as testing as at Garthorpe. Here it was Heavy, conditions that suit Loughan (114) to a tee. Once again dominating a small field from the front, he had little trouble following up his Holderness success and, whilst he remains in such good heart, further success seems assured.

REPORTS

THE BELVOIR HUNT

SATURDAY 23 MARCH 2024

The ground at Garthorpe dried well throughout the week leading up to the 2024 renewal of the Belvoir point-to-point at Garthorpe on Saturday 23rd March, and a big crowd of racegoers braved some icy hail showers and a typically arctic prevailing wind and partied in the bar long after racing had finished.

Clerk of Course Jim Culloty recorded the ground as officially soft at the start of racing, adding that there were areas which were probably good to soft and others that were on the heavy side of soft. Jockeys complimented the going all day and much credited should be given to the hard working team who had been there every day last week.

The much anticipated move by Tom Ellis to training under rules meant that Gina Ellis started her G&T Racing point-to-point training career this weekend and did it with three wins on the bounce in the second, third and fourth races on the card.

The first of these was as rider and trainer as she piloted the mare Arctic Oscar to victory in the Intermediate race for the Ice ‘N’ Slice Racing Club, possibly one of the most successful syndicates in pointing. Courting Flow was three lengths behind her in second, while Ocojohn (Ed

Vaughan) had pulled up “Jack bought her at Doncaster but unfortunately she picked up and injury and missed last season. She actually beat Courting Flow in her maiden [Percy at Alnwick] and now she has done so again in her intermediate,” Gina said, and suggested that this horse might go to the Hunter Chase evening.

Immediately following this Jack Andrews added a quickfire second win to her training career as Jetaway Joey won a competitive match race for the Mixed Open, beating Clara Sorrento (Rupert Stearn) by two lengths.

To complete the training treble Gina rode Loughan to win the Ladies Conditions race in impressive form by beating Izzy Marshall and Golden Tobouggan by a distance. “When we got him off the Skeltons Harry told me that when’s he at the front he wants to be at the back and when he’s at the back he wants to be at the front. Now I think he probably likes to be at the front,” Gina explained. “He’s a free-going, enthusiastic horse and a very good jumper”.

The opening race was a new one for Garthorpe in recent years, a conditions race for novice riders or veterans sponsored by W. Spence and Son, and as it happened it started as a match race between two novices in George Case and Ed Vaughan. Ed Vaughan’s ride was First Preference which went off as hot favourite, having won three out of four starts, but pulled up with three to jump, leaving Phillippa Taylor’s Elmdale

to complete and win for the second time in seven days

The first of two maidens, the Goffs four and five year olds race, produced the best finish of the day as Josh Newman and Big Bert caught long time leader Holeshot (Ed Vaughan) in the run in to win by a length for the Shannon Lodge Racing Club after a long trip up from the west country “He’s a lovely stamp of a horse,” Newman said. “When we bought him, we didn’t think we would get him to the track until autumn of next season. We’ve not been putting pressure on him but he just came to hand and we thought we would give it a go We’ll see what everyone wants to do but if he’s accepted he’ll probably go to one of the sales now.”

The three-mile maiden, sponsored by Teigh Bed and Breakfast, was the last formal race of the day and saw Ed Vaughan cap a slightly frustrating day with a win on Lavorante for trainer Luke Price, beating favourite Occupied Territory (Jack Andrews) by eight lengths.

Sadly the Woodland Pytchley meeting on Easter Saturday has succumbed to the recent bad weather and the has been abandoned for this year, so the next Midlands Area meeting will be at Thorpe Lodge on Easter Monday, where the South Notts will be our hosts. This fixture will also now host a Goffs Young Horse Maiden for four and five year old horses, to replace similar races lost at other meetings recently

LANARKSHIRE & RENFREWSHIRE AND EGLINTON

SATURDAY 23 MARCH 2024

Britain’s most valuable fixture at Overton Farm in South Lanarkshire was a resounding success on Saturday with 60 runners on the seven race card and a bumper 2000+ crowd.

Bonchester Bridge-based rider Lucy Brown is the new leader in the Perth Racecourse-sponsored Northern Area Ladies Championship following her win on former Nicky Henderson-trained hurdler and chaser Fugitives Drift in the 2m4f Goulding’s Garden Centre Conditions Race. Named after a landmark near the Rorke’s Drift battlefield in South Africa, the nine-year-old son of Yeats was always prominent and, after being sent on with Dream Over three out, got the better of a prolonged duel with Shropshire raider Little Light (Henry Crow) from the next to score by one-and-a-half lengths.

Brown said: ‘’Coincidentally, I was at the Tattersalls Sale in Ireland in November 2015 when he was sold as a foal and, after following his progress under Rules, it was great to get the chance to buy him privately in January 2023. He hasn’t been the easiest to train with various ailments including ulcers as well as back and foot problems to overcome, so it’s a relief to get his career back on track.’’

The win on Fugitives Drift along with a second on Reve De Niamh, both of whom are also owned and trained by Brown, ensured that she won the £250 prize as the Dales Solicitors LLP-sponsored leading owner on the day and was also the NFU Mutual-sponsored leading jockey on the day.

Cheltenham Festival winning owner Ronnie Bartlett was on hand to greet his well related debutant Incisive back into the winners’ enclosure after the 3m Overton Point-toPoint Maiden Race. Given a patient ride by Nick Orpwood, the six-year-old was always in touch with the leaders before moving into third after three out. Finding plenty up the home straight, he eased past Toucan Sam (William Hamilton) approaching the last and kept on well to score by three lengths.

Bartlett, who paid 120,000 euros for the son of Crillon at Goffs Land Rover Sale in June 2021, said: ‘’He broke his pelvis later that year and at one stage we thought he might have to be put down but an extended period of recuperation has done the trick. We knew we had something to work with following a piece of work he did four weeks ago and Nick give him a great ride He’ll improve again on better ground and will return to Overton on April 27.’’

Paramaribo provided Newton-by-the-Sea owner/trainer Victor Thompson with his second winner of the season in the STCS (Scotland) Ltd NPPA Conditions Race. After taking it up a mile from home, Joe Wright’s mount was pressed all the way to the line by ex-chaser Not The Chablis (Jess Jubb) and had to pull out all the stops to secure a neck verdict in easily the best time of the day. Successful in a 1m5f contest on the Flat at Ayr on 23rd May 2023, the winner was bought out of Iain Jardine’s yard two days later at Goffs UK Doncaster Sale for £22,000

Eagles Rock was the most impressive winner of the day in the Priory Bridge Landscaping Restricted Race. Given a supremely confident ride by Cheltenham Foxhunters’ winning jockey John Dawson, the six-year-old picked off his rivals one-by-one on the final circuit before hitting the front two out and coasted home six lengths ahead of Reve De Niamh (Lucy Brown). The Conduit gelding is related to multiple jumps winners including Perfect Candidate, Path Of Peace and Satin Lover.

This was a first training success for Mosshouses-based Mike Cregan who worked for Mouse Morris when he was living in Ireland. The winner was bought privately and unseen by Vicky Russell (formerly Vicky Simpson) from Ben Crawford An accomplished amateur rider and trainer more than a decade ago, Vicky won 2 Ladies Opens and a Kelso Hunters’ Chase on her own Jacksonville between March 2006 and January 2007. The best horse she trained was Hold On Julio who won 4 Points and the Buccleuch Cup Maiden Hunters’ Chase under Mikey Ennis between May 2010 and April 2011.

Few horses in the North can match the consistency of Ballydonagh Boy in the last three seasons and the admirable ten-yearold delivered again in the valuable Hillhouse

Quarry Group Ltd Mixed Open for Novice Riders. Always prominent, he looked in command when drawing two lengths clear at the second last under 16-year-old Askham Bryan Agriculture student Isla John but had to dig deep in the closing stages to keep the rallying Vivas (Natasha Cookson) at bay by a short head for his eighth Pointing win since December 2021.

Almost six years since making a winning debut between the flags in Ireland, Buster Valentine (Paddy Barlow) proved that the fire is still burning with a second success in the space of three weeks in the valuable Atlas Cranes UK Ltd Mixed Open Race. After being sent on six out, the Will Milburn-trained eleven-year-old was always doing enough in the closing stages to prevent Avoid De Master (Emma Brown) from getting back on terms and still had one-and-a-half lengths in hand at the line

Ex-hurdler Bellaney Lord (Thomas Easterby) fulfilled the promise shown when eight lengths 3rd to It’s A Diamond in a 2m6f Holderness Maiden last time out when getting off the mark in the 12-runner 2m4f Mackenzie Transport Ltd Maiden Conditions Race. Appreciating the drop in trip and sharper track, the William Easterby-trained eight-yearold drew clear two out before cruising home five lengths ahead of The Back Braes (Lyall Hodgins). Formerly with Stuart Crawford, this 113-rated hurdler was bought for £15,000 at Goffs UK Doncaster Sale in May 2023.

The main action was preceded by pony racing, with the Get Ahead Hats-sponsored 138cm Open won by Silver (Freya Ainslie) from Kitty (Pippa Gibson) and Mohammed Ali (Cara Wilson), while the Get Ahead Hats-sponsored 148cm Open was won by Judge Fox (Caden Beasley) from The Cork Man (Cara Tuke) and Lucky June (Tara Kane).

The Overton Farm course was reinstated and rolled on Sunday in readiness for the Family Day fixture on April 27, with all proceeds that day going to Kilbryde Hospice and St Andrew’s Hospice. The next Northern Area meeting is the rescheduled Tynedale at Corbridge on April 20 and, as usual, the Haydon stages the season finale at Hexham Racecourse on May 18.

THE TEDWORTH HUNT

SATURDAY 23 MARCH 2024

The curtain fell on the current season at Larkhill as the Tedworth returned to the course that they last raced at in 1991. The weather played its part in the day giving two unpleasant hailstorms which sent racegoers scurrying for cover but otherwise it remained dry throughout the afternoon. There were a number of impressive performances during the meeting including a training double for Nicky Sheppard to seal her achievement as leading trainer at the course, a first career winner for Hugh Lillingston, a riding double for James King and a third course victory for Wolf Walker

The Restricted race which opened the meeting appeared to be a virtual match between Wolf Walker, owned by Robert Fear and Andrew Ham, who had won both a Maiden and a Restricted at the Wiltshire course and Red Nika, a very impressive winner at Badbury Rings on his return to racing following a long absence. Described by winning rider Will Biddick as a ‘pointing equivalent of the famous meeting between Seabiscuit and War Admiral’ it proved to be very one sided with his mount brushing aside his rival to record an easy victory Described by his trainer Chris Barber as ‘a bit quirky’ he was quick to highlight the role of Jamie Thomas in the training of him in a similar way to his stable star Famous Clermont. Chris added that ‘he has strengthened as his training has progressed and that there is much more to come’. Originally as a 5-yearold a light season was planned, but with the three victories under his belt one option that is being considered for him is the Intermediate Final at Cheltenham as he has now won two Restricted races this season.

The Club Conditions race also appeared to be between the two principals Ihandaya, an easy winner at Didmarton this season, and Horizon D’Ainay already the winner of three races this season at Larkhill. However, the former showed an impressive turn of foot to draw clear from the second last and record a twenty lengths victory Owned by Clive Hitchings and moved to Nicky Sheppard’s yard this season from Sam Loxton the six-year-old, partnered by Natalie Parker has continued to progress and has a bright future. Nicky commented that ‘we are very lucky to have him’ and thanked Clive for allowing her to train such an exciting prospect.

The Mares Maiden race provided James King with the first leg of his double when the Joanna Mann owned Bushtucker Park made most of the running to defeat newcomers Cue Jump and Lamanver Stargazy who dead heated in second place. Previously trained by Olly Murphy and known to James, he was bought by Joanna following a Facebook advert as she had been looking for a Walk in The Park mare to breed from. Trained by Julie Wadland, for whom James rides on a regular basis, he advised that ‘she jumps fences well and that her rating under Rules was lower than it should have been so I was hopeful that she would be good enough to win a race like this’.

The feature race, the Tedworth Gold Cup, run over an extended three miles six furlongs provided Grace a Vous Enki ridden by James King with another comfortable victory Despite giving away ground when jumping left-handed at most fences he had too much class for his three rivals and had ten lengths in hand over Gran Paradiso Recording his fifth consecutive Open victory at Larkhill this season, which must be a record, his next outing is likely to be the Lady Dudley Cup, a race his owner Joan Hitchings is particularly keen to win. A half brother to Yala Enki there was never much doubt that he would stay this extended trip and so it proved.

The biggest field of the day, the Novice Riders race, attracted a field of twelve horses and this produced a fairytale outcome for 19-year-old Hugh Lillingston on his pointing debut. Riding

the family-owned mare All Loved Up he had twelve lengths in hand at the finish ahead of the favourite Diligent ridden by Shannon Holmes. Hugh who has been working for Nicky Henderson since Christmas is the son of Luke Lillingston the international bloodstock agent who is based at the Mount Coote Stud in Ireland. Luke explained that they had been looking for a suitable schoolmaster for Hugh and she had been sourced by J D Moore. Although she was a Maiden, she had had plenty of experience including a fourth in a Hunter Chase at Fairyhouse which Luke described as ‘quite similar to Larkhill.’ Trained by Olive Nicholls she advised that’ as Hugh was based close by at Lambourn, they had been looking for a suitable yard to place the mare and she was delighted to help out and to be involved in his initial success’. Those with longer memories may remember Luke riding in point to points in the 1980’s and winning on Dombolus at Spring Hill.

A competitive Maiden concluded the meeting and provided a welcome winner for Special John, owned by father and daughter Paul and Jazmin Hosgood and jockey Charlie Sprake. Setting off in front he held off the challenge of Badbury Rings ridden by Ella Herbison, by two lengths. Acquired privately from Henry de Bromhead after he did not sell at auction he is related to Special Tiara the very speedy two mile chaser who won the Champion Chase in 2017 Jazmin who operates a horse transport business traIns this gelding along with Born in the West who was runner up at Cotley the following day.

THE COTLEY HUNT

SUNDAY 24 MARCH 2024

A rare day of Spring sunshine amongst the seemingly never-ending saturation that has become the norm of late, brought locals flocking to the course at Cotley, near Chard for the first of two point to points held here. The large crowd, some of whom braved shirtsleeves, enjoyed some excellent racing which was preceded by an entertaining Shetland Pony Race (won by Teddy Holliday riding Wilma II) sponsored by local businesses in aid of St Margaret’s Hospice. The highlights of the day were a training double for the Josh Newman yard on what turned out to be memorable weekend for them with a total of six winners and welcome winners for trainer Les Jefford as well as jockey Will Badlan on his own horse

The first of the Newman horses to oblige was a rejuvenated The Kings Writ in the Mens’ Open, who was winning for the second time this season following a victory in January at Chipley Park. After coasting in by 26 lengths from Siberian Star and Beau de Brizais who deadheated for second on the line, Will Biddick remarked “Well how easy was that?” Jumped well and just kept on galloping.” Kayley Woollacott who was deputising for her partner Josh Newman, on duty at Kilworthy where he rode and trained three winners, said “We’ve had him since he was four and the owners have given him back to us We just felt though he wasn’t ready to retire yet as he’s really enjoying himself And this week, his best friend Lalor, returned to the yard now he’s been retired and their reunion was lovely with them clearly so pleased to see each other again after such a long time.”

The second winner for the yard, came in the Ladies Open when Izzy Marshall steered Sixteen Letters home for an equally impressive success in a slightly eventful race reduced by one when leader Mix of Clover ran out on the first circuit unseating Isabel Lovat leaving Professor Calculus to make the running. He then thought about taking a quick exit back towards the lorry park and jockey Ella Herbison did well to negotiate the bend intact. Sixteen Letters however had taken this race for the last two years and had too much class for his opponents. A breathing issue which is inoperable, means that he is more suited to a downhill finish although Izzy remarked he did it so easily that he didn’t have any issues. Owner John Symes thought he could well return to the course for the Seavington meeting in April as the course suited him so well.

A relieved Les Jefford welcomed Prophesea back to the winner’s enclosure after the Maiden Conditions race Trained by him for Sue Trump, this good looking son of Affinisea looks like a nice prospect and was running for the second time for connections following a good second at Charlton Horethorne Describing Prophesea as “Pure class!” jockey Callum Pritchard was full of praise for him and felt the recent loose-schooling they had been doing had given the horse a lot of confidence. Octogenarian owner Sue had picked him out of a bunch of horses from Ireland that Tim Dennis had sourced and like him immediately For Les, this was his first winner from his new base at David Pipe’s second yard although his horses have started to run well recently and he could be a trainer to follow over the next few months.

Another to catch the eye in the paddock was Trevada who took the first, a Restricted under Zac Baker for trainer Fran Poste. Jumping well throughout, he was sent into a clear lead on the second circuit and although Spear Dancer and Jean Genie tried to close, the winner had too much in hand. Zac explained afterwards, “He really liked this softer ground and got into a lovely rhythm which he needs as he’s a big galloper.” Charlie Poste was hopeful he would make up into an Open horse in time and possibly be good enough for a hunter chase for his owners the Picnic Partnership, who lease two horses from the yard for the season. They have had over a dozen winners since forming but agree the best

bit about pointing is the picnic hence the name! It looked a nice race both on paper and paddock looks and the placed horses should have a good future too.

Owner/rider Will Badlan sprang a surprise when his Western Cowboy held off Steel Express to take the Conditions race with oddson favourite In Our Dreams back in third. It was a slightly stop/start race with the lead changing several times but there was no fluke about Western Cowboy’s win. This was only his third start for Will who had bought him unseen from Thoroughbid Online with Jerry McGrath’s help He felt he hadn’t quite stayed last time at Badbury Rings on the tacky ground and if he recovered in time from the cut hind leg he sustained here, would be back for the Seavington meeting.

It is rare that Welsh raider Luke Price does not go home with at least one winner from this course and his Colden’s Dream obliged in the very last race under James King. Always up with the pace, James kicked on down the far hill with both Valentin de Maine and Born in the West trying to match strides. But the winner kept finding more and at the post was 11 lengths clear of Born in the West with Free the Lion staying on for third. Connections remarked on the winner’s small stature in the paddock afterwards and joked he’d probably get into a pony race! It was a surprise that given his record in improving horses that he wasn’t sent off long odds-on on this his first start for Luke and it would be no surprise if he followed up this win.

POINT-TO-POINT racing returned to the Devon & Cornwall Area after a frustrating 11 weeks gap due to a plethora of waterlogged courses during this rain sodden winter

The Lamerton fixture at Kilworthy had been put back for one week, but the organisers were well rewarded this time when a total of 49 runners lined up for their seven races run on soft ground.

Sunday’s highlights included riding trebles for both Darren Edwards and Josh Newman, with Lifton trainer Dean Summersby going even better when a quartet of the runners he saddled reached the winner’s enclosure.

Liberty Rock started the ball rolling for the Summersby/Edwards team by sharing a dead heat in the Hunt race The eight-yearold had won at this track last season and battled well as Takeabid’s late thrust put her on terms reaching the judge

Dean Summersby reported that “Liberty Rock really needs better ground and will be aimed at the Exeter Intermediate Final if the ground dries up,”

Takeabid’s rider, 20-year-old Chad Bament, works for the Anthony Honeyball yard and was partnering his ninth career winner as the John Heard trained mare put in a fluent round of jumping.

THE LAMERTON HUNT

SUNDAY 24 MARCH 2024

Takeabid carries the colours of John Gardener and Terry Hamlin, and the former was in the winner’s circle again when fiveyear-old mare Liwah, owned in partnership with his wife Sonia, became the first leg of Josh Newman’s treble when winning the Mares Maiden. Newman’s patient ride paid off as the small ex-French mare just had enough in hand to hold Chloe Emsley’s challenge on the odds-on favourite Moon Lady “They had gone off quickly so I just kept sitting,” remarked the winning rider, who also trains the mare.

It became the Dean Summersby show for the next three races, these successes in stark contrast to the yard’s virus hit early season form. Six-year-old Jet Smart stretched clear from three out to take the horses and geldings Maiden under Darren Edwards to draw some generous praise from the trainer “He was quite expensive when he joined David Pipe from Ireland. He jumps like an Open horse although he would prefer better ground. When he gets his conditions he could flourish.”

Dean’s 20-year-old daughter Charlotte took over in the saddle to land her sixth career success as Young Buck held on to a fast diminishing lead over runner up Makety to take the Mixed Open. “I kept asking and he kept giving,” reported the young rider who works in her father’s yard One of the

area’s favourite mares, Singapore Saga, was pulled up lame in this race and trainer John Heard confirmed afterwards that she would be retired with a breeding future in mind.

Jubertilee became the fourth winner of the afternoon for the Summersby yard when winning the Area Conditions race Mike Bickell’s seven-year-old was given a vintage Darren Edwards ride, glued to the inside rails and cutting every corner before holding Arv Way There in a driving finish.” I was a bit surprised but this is his track and he was given a peach of a ride This is my first four-timer,” said a much relieved trainer

The remaining two races went to jockey/ trainer combination Josh Newman, whose weekend had been further enhanced when he sent out two winners from his Woolminstone yard at Sunday’s Cotley meeting after a successful riding foray at Garthorpe, Leicestershire, on the previous day.

Terry Hamlin’s consistent mare Lucky Lara proved just too strong for front running stable companion Whitsand Bay in the Restricted in a reversal of their Charlton Horethorne form before the progressive Hearts Corner, in the colours of Becky Kealey, held the late thrust of Harbour Queen to win the Intermediate and set up a tilt at the Exeter Racecourse Final.

POINTING PEOPLE: TOM HUTSBY

The latest in a long line of Hutsbys to make their mark on the pointing scene is 16-year-old Tom, who has already ridden two winners in his debut season – 86 behind the career total of father Fred, who was best known for his association with Mighty Moss. With Tom gearing up for his busiest weekend of race-riding so far, Jake Exelby spoke to him to find out about his ambitions, between the flags and beyond.

Tell me about yourself and your background in the sport

I’m studying for my GCSEs at the moment – I’ve got 15 exams to sit in total, Then, next year, I’m going to Moreton Morrell College for a year to get my farming licence. Eventually, I hope to become a professional jockey –hopefully the next A P McCoy!

I’m from Walton in Warwickshire (where Fred farms) and I’m a fifth-generation point-topoint rider, after my great-great-grandad, also Fred, great-grandfather Henry, grandad Ken and Dad. I don’t remember when I first sat on a horse so I must have been tiny, but I do recall sitting on (Aintree Foxhunters third) Rash

Move when I was three I started hunting aged five on my pony Flicker, who came from my cousins Henry and Billy Burton, and my first proper hunter was Kingsley, who I still have

Tell me about your pony racing career

I began at 11 – Mum (Caroline) wouldn’t let me start earlier – riding Churchill, who was given to me by Richard and Dawn Prince. We went on to win a Pony Club series race at Cheltenham. After him, there was The Jobs Not Straight, Hot Night – who we got from Jack Tudor, Petit De Beaute and O’Flynns Daughter, both of whom also came from the Princes. I had about 60 rides and nine winners.

How has your pointing career progressed and what are your ambitions?

I turned 16 on November 1st and had my first ride shortly afterwards on Joe Kidd at Badbury Rings. I was very nervous because it was my first time riding against adults and over fences. You have to stand your ground.

I’ve had 27 rides so far – including three in Hunter Chases – and had my first winner on

Shoal Bay at Ampton earlier this month. My instructions were to get a flyer and I had a five or six length lead at the start. I held the inside the whole way, wouldn’t let anyone in, and quickened then slowed the pace. I didn’t want to give him a hard ride, so did it ‘hands and heels’ and was delighted.

My second win was on Young Rich – my first ride for Tom and Gina Ellis. He’s a lovely horse who did it all for me – he jumped well and kept creeping away Tom had told me not to go too soon. I got the ride because their usual novice jockey was injured, and I’ve been to theirs a couple of times.

I’ve ridden a lot against Ed Vaughan this season, but he always seems to beat me! For the rest of the season, I just want to ride a few more winners, not mess up and get owners looking out for me Then, next year, I want to do even better I’ll probably do at least three years before turning professional.

Which other jockeys do you admire and why?

I’ve always got along with James King. I used to ride out for Olly Murphy (where James

#gopointing www.pointtopoint.co.uk 25

works), so he’d collect me and take me there, and we used to play cricket together I’m a good fielder – I get a lot of runouts from boundary throws!

I also get on well with Zac Baker, Gina and Jack Andrews and Charlie Poste, Rodi Greene and David Bridgwater have been helpful with my riding, David by showing me videos of Hunter Chases.

Among the professionals, Ruby Walsh, A P McCoy, Dickie Johnson and – currently –Harry Cobden.

Which horse would you most like to ride in points?

Premier Magic. I was second to him at Brocklesby Park and was supporting him in the Cheltenham Foxhunters. Under rules, Constitution Hill and Ballyburn.

What’s your favourite course?

I don’t really have one yet, but probably High Easter. Not only have I had a winner there, but it’s a lovely track.

What would you do if you were in charge of the sport?

I’d change the way novice jockeys claim, giving us 3lb, 5lb and 7lb allowances (depending on how many winners ridden) and extending this to races other than Opens. Not only would it give more opportunities to jockeys, but also horses.

What would you do if you weren’t involved with horses?

I’d probably be playing rugby. I was selected as a scrumhalf for the Worcester Warriors academy but gave that up to focus on my riding.

Do you have any hobbies outside racing?

I enjoy shooting and hunting and do both of those as much as I can… but I don’t nick off school to go!

I also do a lot of show jumping, particularly on Zodiac Z for John and Marcine Marshall, who are great supporters and have five pointers in the yard too (including Shoal Bay). I can’t thank them enough.

We jump 110cm poles and we’ve been to the Pony Club championships for the last four years, being placed every time and winning at Burghley last summer
