Due to a high number of entries in the closing Maiden (56), the decision has been taken by the fixture in conjunction with the PPA to divide the race into four divisions.
This means we now have a NINE race card with the first race brought forward to 11.25. The remaining races will be run at 35-minute intervals.

Photo: Alun SedgmoreIt is rare that a three-runner field sparks the interest of clock watchers. The Open at Brocklesby, for example, was run at a relative crawl with Premier Magic winning as he liked having dictated matters from the front. However, the three runner Jockey Club Mares Maiden later on the card may prove an exception. Twelve months ago, this race was won by Grenadine Save, winner of two of her next three starts including the Northern Novice Champion race at Charm Park and the winner of this year’s renewal, That’ll Do Moss (89) promises to be even better A strong daughter of Black Sam Bellamy, That’ll do Moss’s jumping was a little novicey in the early stages but she warmed to her task as the pace increased on the final circuit and finally overhauled long-time leader Imperial Pride on the run to the last. Her sire is renowned for producing strong stayers and, as That’ll Do Moss was doing all her best work at the finish, she is likely to benefit from being campaigned over similar stayers tracks in the future. She looks a likeable sort.
The Northern circuit is now well underway after suffering at the hands of the weather and Ask Cory (116) was a comfortable winner of a competitive Novice Riders event at Friars Haugh- posting a figure some nine pounds higher than his form rating He’s an eleven-year-old now but this figure is in line with similar achieved under Rules and as this was his second win in just three starts between the flags he looks sure to add to his tally under young rider Chloe McHattie The race was set up by Nick Lost (110) who set a strong pace and kept on willingly having been headed, on this is points debut. A listed Chase winner in Ireland in his youth (rated 136) he will be better suited by a sounder surface.
The Opening race on the card was won by Something Golden (98) who had raced as though in need of the outing when down the field at Alnwick two weeks previously Here his rider Jack Power was content to wait in rear before making steady headway to hit the front approaching the last and run on well to hold off the pursuing pack. His hurdle race speed proved decisive on this occasion; indeed his previous hurdle record also suggests he will not be inconvenienced by drier ground conditions. Runner-up Whats the Solution (96) is steadily improving, having appeared more amenable to restraint on this occasion. He held every chance before propping on landing at the last and it won’t be too long before he loses his maiden status.

Over an inch of rain fell during the two days prior to the meeting turning the ground to “soft, heavy in places,” and whilst stamina was to the fore and all race times were close to 7 minutes, the track rode very well. The weather was mild for February and dry on the day leading to a large crowd enjoying the competitive racing. With Revesby abandoned, Brocklesby will be the only point to point in Lincolnshire in 2024 The highlights of the meeting included riding doubles for Bradley Gibbs and Jack Andrews. In total, 37 runners contested the 7 races and the meeting.
Victory in the feature Baillie Haylage open race went to the 2023 Cheltenham Festival Challenge Cup Hunter Chase winner Premier Magic. Bringing his unbeaten sequence to seven straight wins, Premier Magic supplemented his victory at Sheriff Hutton last month making all the running to win going away from his two rivals by five lengths. Bradley Gibbs made a number of checks over his shoulder before pushing his mount clear on the run in. “I was hoping for someone to take me on a bit so he had to work a bit harder,” commented the winning rider who also trains the horse in Hertfordshire. “He will go straight to Cheltenham for another tilt at the Festival Hunter Chase now.” The second horse Salty Boy was 5 lengths away and ran very respectably having been off the track for 2 years, he was making his point debut for the Hutsby family Manwell and Will Easterby were a further 10 lengths away in third.
The meeting opened with another intended Cheltenham Festival Hunter Chase runner, Just Your Type who also dominated from the front to win the Brocklesby and Lincolnshire Members, Subscribers and Farmers race sponsored by Grimsby Roofing Services. Owned by Neil and Louise O’ Hara, Neil grew up in Brocklesby country “Neil always wanted to come back here but unfortunately has COVID so could not attend.” He explained. The Earl of Yarborough’s El Presente, trained close to the track by Sam Klug finished second, ridden by Brocklesby jockey Tom Broughton with last year’s winner Star Present, owned by John Cottingham and Mrs Cupan and
ridden by Jack Teal in third. Just Your Type has form over extended trips of 4 miles and the Grimthorpe Gold Cup could be another race on his radar
Bradley Gibbs completed his double in the DDM Agriculture Eight years old and over Conditions race (Level 3) on a spare ride; Farrants Way after Toby McCain- Mitchell was engaged at the subsequently called off Warwick. Tom Murray’s 10-year-old has often been let down by his jumping in the past and indeed there were a few errors, but the ground suited him well. “I’m usually riding him myself and it makes me more nervous watching Brad ride him. He is quirky and he will come on from the run.” Said the winning owner / trainer Farrants Way may also make the journey from the Cotswolds for the Grimthorpe God Cup has he stays well. Will Thirlby’s Milan Native was second with the local horse, Mike Robinson’s Game Of War a respectable third on ground and over a trip that did not suit. He may be seen next in a Leicester Hunter Chase over a shorter distance next month.
The Clark Weightman PPORA Club Members
Conditions race looked competitive on paper, but Latenightrumble came nine lengths clear for a decisive success Owned by Pippa Ellis, Lightnightrumble was given a patient ride by Jack Andrews who held him up before gradually easing into the race taking up the lead at the last fence. “This is the Latenightpass family, and they are all late developers.” Explained winning trainer Tom Ellis. “His two siblings both won the intermediate final so I would like to aim for that because I don’t think three from the same family will ever have won it. We have a 3-year-old full brother to Latenightpass at home and Latenightfumble is in foal to Passing Glance.” He said. Samantha Coward’s Red Opium was second for Rosie Howarth with Lagan Valley and James King in 4 lengths further back in third.
Jack Andrews completed his double in the Brigg Office Supplies Restricted race with Champagne Glory defying a penalty to record his second win at this level. Owned by Mr and Mrs Latilla-Campbell, Stuart Morris trains the progressive 7-year-old.
“He is a big horse and has benefitted from a wind op; he would not want the ground too fast“. he explained. Jack Andrews’ sister was 8 lengths away in second on Penniless, with Goleirihem in third.
The Jockey Club Maiden race for Mares and Fillies, sponsored by the Jockey Club and Daniel Charles Construction, went to John Dawson who owns, trains and rides That’ll Do Moss. The 5-year-old having just her second racecourse appearance scored by 4 lengths and looks an exciting prospect. Dawson is in fine form having ridden a double at the Sinnington and the hunter chase at Wetherby on Sine Nomine last weekend.
John Wallwin’s Grangeclare Diego landed the concluding Nunns Isuzu Ltd Maiden race under Paddy Barlow. Trained by Jonathan Barlow the 6-year-old was always prominent in the race and put 8 lengths between himself and the runner up, Tom Ellis’ Gabrielle De Balon and Gina Andrews. The Barlow team did not have a restricted race target in mind for the winner but will be looking for a galloping track and soft ground in the coming weeks.
The next point to point meeting in the Midlands area is the Cottesmore at Garthorpe on Sunday 25th February
For once this season the weather gods were kind to the Northern Area as Kelso missed the heavy overnight rain which hit many parts of North Yorkshire and Northumberland resulting in ground no worse than soft for the well attended Berwickshire fixture at Friars Haugh on Sunday which saw 49 runners face the starter on a seven race card.
Cheltenham trainer Max Comley was rewarded for making the 630-mile round trip with a treble courtesy of Jay Bee Whiskey, Oscar Montel and Wagner to take his season’s record to an impressive 14 winners from 24 runners.
Jay Bee Whiskey set the ball rolling when extending his unbeaten sequence this term to four in the 2m4f Kelso & Musselburgh Racecourses PPORA Club Members Conditions Race.
Confidently ridden by James King, who like Comley was making a first visit to the picturesque Scottish Borders track, the nine-year-old went on up the hill after five out and never looked like being pegged back from the next. Despite being eased right down on the run-in, Comley’s charge still had eighteen lengths in hand over Flat winner Paramaribo (Jack Power) at the line
Comley said: ‘’We left at 3.30am and only just made it here in time after a few travel issues on the way Jay Bee Whiskey is very versatile as regards both trip and ground, and I’d be hopeful he could add another couple of Pointing wins to his tally before running in the Intermediate Final at Cheltenham on May 3.’’
Oscar Montel doubled up for Comley’s in-form yard in the Forsyth of Denny Ladies Open Race and in the process gave 19-year-old Rhiannon Fletcher a memorable winning debut ride Patiently ridden, the ten-year-old ex-chaser picked off his rivals one-by-one on the final circuit before staying on strongly to head longtime leader Oscar Wilde (Amy Coltherd) between the last two fences and win, a shade cosily in the end, by four lengths, with Bintheredonethat (Eloise JusticeVose) a short-head away in third.
The winner is owned by Rhiannon and was gifted to her by former owner Charlie Noell. She works for Comley at his Naunton yard and only just got her jockey’s licence through in time to take the ride Still buzzing 24 hours after the win, she received plenty of vocal encouragement from her boss during the race He was standing near Fence 8 and was keen to make sure she closed on the leaders as Oscar Montel was about ten lengths off the pace at that stage
Comley’s second treble on the Northern Area circuit this season was completed by Wagner in the Prime Property Ventures Men’s Open Race. Always going well under champion jockey James King, the nineyear-old quickened five lengths clear three
out before coasting home twelve lengths ahead of Wild Romance (Shay Halton).
Much improved since undergoing wind surgery last summer and better going left-handed, Wagner has now won at Alnwick, Cocklebarrow, Friars Haugh and Wadebridge this term. The gelding has an American owner and might eventually head over there to race
Reflecting on another successful weekend at Brocklesby Park (Saturday) and Friars Haugh which resulted in 4 winners from 5 runners, Comley, who didn’t get back to his Gloucestershire yard until 2am on Monday morning, said: ‘’Things couldn’t have gone much better this season and the time spent
Post race de-brief from James King recorded by trainer Max Comleystudying The Planner for suitable races is paying off It also helps when you have owners who are prepared to let you run their horses anywhere in the country.’’
Ex-hurdler Something Golden was given a peach of a ride by Jack Power to land the 13-runner Wild Plum Escapes & Active BP PPORA Club Members Maiden Race in good style from Thirsk raider Whats The Solution (Jack Teal).
After being held up towards the back of the field from the off, the eight-year-old made smooth headway after four out before being produced with a perfectlytimed challenge to take it up from Norman Sanderson’s promising debutante She Is The Enemy (Ross Wilson) at the last and score by two lengths.
In a race that is likely to throw up plenty of future winners, Henry’s Regime (3rd), She Is The Enemy (4th). debutant Take Notice (6th) and Easter Glory (9th) all caught the eye.
Something Golden, owned and trained by octogenarian Newton-by-the-Sea permit holder Victor Thompson who continues to prove that age is just a number, was bought for £14,000 out of Iain Jardine’s yard at Goffs UK Doncaster Sale on 25th May 2023 having finished runnerup over hurdles at Hexham two days earlier
After scoring first time out at Corbridge last April, Chloe McHattie’s mount Ask Cory struck gold again on his reappearance
in the Bedmax NPPA Conditions Race for Novice Riders. Always travelling well behind pace-setting Nick Lost (Natasha Cookson), the eleven-year-old’s proven stamina kicked in on the long run to the last where he hit the front before staying on strongly on the flat to beat Coole Hall (Abi Reid) by a comfortable two lengths.
James Ewart, husband of winning trainer Briony Ewart, said: ‘’He wasn’t keen to go on the gallops when he first came to the yard but is a happy horse now and loves his racing. He’s actually been ready to run for a month but those plans were dashed when meetings at Alnwick and Friars Haugh were abandoned.’’
After finishing runner-up on 4 of his 6 previous visits to Friars Haugh since January 2020, Teds Charley Roe registered a deserved first career victory in the Ennova Law Owner-Trainer Conditions Race. Positively ridden by Lucy Brown, the elevenyear-old dictated a steady pace from solitary rival Famous Response (Charlotte Tailford) and was always doing enough in the closing stages to keep his Northumbrian challenger at bay by a couple of lengths.
This was a 10th career winner between the flags for Brown and a fine training performance by Jacqui Irvine Lang as her charge was returning from a 364-day absence
After opening his account at Mosshouses last April, the Brader family’s home-bred Duke Account (John Dawson) made
another successful cross-border raid in the concluding HPM Cooper (Building & Roofing) Restricted Race. Always prominent, the nine-year-old was sent on three out and stayed on well from the next to beat Shantou’s Temple (Lyall Hodgins) by one-and-a-quarter lengths.
The main action was preceded by two 4f pony races which both had 8 runners. The 138cm Press Mains Cottages Open Race was won by Cheshire raider Just A Little Dot (Daniel Harrison) from Mohammed Ali (Cara Wilson) and Kitty (Pippa Gibbon), while Lucky June (Tara Kane) landed the 148cm Adam & Company Wealth Management Open Race from Dino Royale (Robyn Coulson) and The Cork Man (Cara Tuke).
The next 3 Northern Area fixtures are the College Valley & North Northumberland (February 25), Duke of Buccleuch’s (March 9) and Lanarkshire & Renfrewshire (March 23).
Higham racecourse looked splendid in the warm, February sunshine for the Waveney Harriers meeting where honours on the day were even with three winners apiece for East Anglian connections and those entrants from outside the region.
There was a minute’s silence, prior to racing, in memory of jockey Keagan Kirkby, who tragically lost his life in a racing accident, in Kent the previous weekend. A moving tribute was given by Stephen Howlett, Chairman of the East Anglian Point-to-Point Association.
The locally based successes came courtesy of The Big Lense (Mixed Open), trained in Newmarket by Jenny Owen and Mount Pleasant (Restricted), owned and trained by Nick Wright at Badlingham on the Suffolk/ Cambridgeshire border Anthony Humphrey who shares stables with his wife Sarah at West Wratting, near Haverhill, saddled Sum It Up (Novice Riders) to complete the trio of East Anglian winners.
Newmarket’s Alex Chadwick was the successful jockey on the first two named winners who were both given classy rides. The Big Lense had three other rivals to contend with and it was Castle Trump and Charlie Buckle who were determined to employ front-running tactics, from the start and there were only three lengths covering all four runners as they went out on their final circuit. At the cross fence, four fences from home, I K Brunel and Izzie Marshall were asking all the questions with Chadwick and The Big Lense stalking them all the way until a perfectly timed run was undertaken by the winning partnership This tactical victory was sealed when jumping into the lead at the last and they prevailed by a length at the winning post. There was a positive move for the winner in the betting ring, just before the ‘off’ and Jenny Owen’s The Big Lense was backed down to evens favourite, from 3/1.
Chadwick completed the double in the concluding Restricted contest when Mount Pleasant consolidated his seasonal opening run at Ampton, when 5th, to give owner/ trainer Nick Wright another success making it 3 wins from 5 runners this season. Ocojohn and Edward Vaughan went off favourite but finished ten lengths behind the winner who was described by his partner as “impressive” with no doubt more improvement to follow. These two successes brought Chadwick’s total for the
season to four and he has several weeks ahead with some promising rides, to build on this total.
Sum It Up was partnered by Josh Parker, who was riding his 3rd winner of his career and he rides out at the Humphrey’s yard, twice a week. The West Wratting trainers have always pursued a policy of encouraging young riders who are associated with their yard and in this instance Parker was deputising for Sum It Up’s owner, Belinda Rose, who was unable to take the ride owing to an on-going ailment. This was a tidy performance by 9yo, Sum It Up, who had been pulled up on his two previous outing this season.
The ‘visitors’ winners started in the opening Owner/ Trainer Conditions race when Silver Sheen landed the odds giving Lee Moulson his first -ever winner The long day for connections started at 3.30am and then a long journey down from Drointon in Staffordshire, which resulted in joyous scenes in the winners’ enclosure when Silver Sheen returned with Huw Edwards the successful jockey Silver Sheen, known as ‘Sean’ around the yard, had some reasonable form under rules, was gifted to Lee by the previous owner, back in September He was entitled to go off favourite after his performance at Larkhill in November when 4th, beaten only 4 lengths in a Mens Open. The Higham venue is no stranger to Lee who had ‘led up’ many times in the past and when questioned if he would re-visit in the future….a resounding affirmative!
Shentri and Ellie Callwood were dominant in the Conditions contest for Leicestershire-
based trainer Kelly Morgan having taken a commanding lead four fences out, with their rivals toiling behind. The odds-on favourite, Koyote and Gina Andrews, her only ride of the day, were outpaced on the final circuit and eventually pulled up, leaving KIlbrew Lad and Polydora to pick up the places, at best some 20 lengths behind the winner Winning jockey Miss Callwood post-race summary “ I looked round, in the straight and it was a pretty good sight. He jumped unreal, taking a length out of everyone at his fences and made no mistakes”
A close fought Maiden race went to Prohus Yank, trained in Shropshire by Heidi Brookshaw and ridden by Tommie O’Brien. The biggest field of the day, numbering nine, were all still standing when going out on their final circuit and at the final open ditch Shanes Passion, Midnight Mystery and Designer Destiny were vying for the lead. The latter then made significant progress to lead two out but coming with a well-timed challenge was the eventual winner who had ½ length advantage at the finish over his Welsh-based, Tim Vaughan-trained rival who led the betting market, at the off This was only Tommie O’Brien’s third visit to Higham and his first success and his comments afterwards were “ I preferred to be further back in the field, switched off, and the application of the hood had relaxed his mount”
A really enjoyable day’s racing and full credit goes to Higham’s Clerk of the Course, Bill Gilchrist and his team for having the course in superb condition.
