17-year-old Tom Hutsby rode the third double of his career at Paxford on Easter Monday aboard Drakes Well in the Mixed Open and Joe Kidd in the Restricted at Paxford. Both trained by his Dad, Fred Hutsby, the victories marked his ninth and tenth winners of the season and takes his career wins to 15. He sits second in the Mens Novice Championship.
The Hutsby family live and farm in Walton in Warwickshire and are steeped within British Point-to-Pointing. Fred rode 82 winners between the flags, 15 under-rules and has been instrumental in the organising and running of the Warwickshire point-to-point for many years. In the midnineties Fred’s Father Ken owned Mighty Moss trained by the late, great David Nicholson and the horse took a young Fred into the limelight as a 7lb claimer; together the partnership won a bumper and Mighty Moss progressed into a smart hurdler. Winning a Grade One escaped them when beaten by the incredible Istabraq in the Royal & Sun Alliance Novices’ Hurdle at the 1997 Cheltenham Festival but many incredible days were enjoyed during these times by the whole family. At the latter end of his career three hunter-chase wins were achieved and Mighty Moss had his last racecourse appearance at the Warwickshire Point-toPoint at Ashorne in 2003.
Growing up surrounded by ponies Tom Hutsby competed in pony club and hunted regularly alongside Dad. A first pony raceride came aged 11 and about 70 rides resulted in nine winners gaining him invaluable experience which he has brought with him into pointing. Winning the pony-club showjumping at Burghley in 2023 was a highlight of those early years.
Fast forward to present day and Hutsby is currently completing an Agricultural Diploma at Moreton Morrell
THIS WEEK’S GRASSROOTS STORY TOM HUTSBY
By Claire Hart, Point-to-Point Correspondent
College, and having recently passed his driving test he can now extend his contacts in the racing world. He has already ridden for some well-known names within pointing circles and has surrounded himself with the right people. He tells me: “I have had some nice rides for good people and have a lot of guidance. James King has been so helpful, also Harry Stock recently; he got me the ride on the horse in the members on Monday for Harriett Jeffreys. That finished second so that was good.” Of college and daily life, he says: “I ride out, work for Dad on the farm and go to college- It was only a one-year course so will be finished soon.” I surmise that college is the least of his worries!
The ball has been rolling this season and NH trainer David Bridgwater is one person who has noticed Hutsby’s talents, he says: “Tom has an old head on young shoulders. He is capable of mixing it with the professionals. He rode Dom Of Mary for me at Cheltenham in the Kim Muir and gave him a superb ride.” Knowing Bridgwater has led to an association with Justin Brotherton who is based at his yard. Brotherton is responsible for providing Hutsby with two winners this season on Kayf Hernando and he also backs up Bridgwater’s sentiments and tells me: “Tom is a great lad, he comes to ride out, is a natural horseman and it has been brilliant to have him. Due to his ban, he can’t ride at Cheltenham next week for us which is a shame. Kayf Hernando had lost his way and Tom was instrumental in regaining his confidence.”
Over the last two weekends Hutsby has been busy, 11 rides have resulted in four winners and five seconds, an admirable strike-rate highlighting that this young jockey is going places. He says: “The last two weeks have been brilliant; it would be great if that momentum kept going. I got banned and can’t ride hunter-chasing at the moment

so that is forcing Dad to run things pointing, which, has worked out well for me.”
Hutsby appears to possess an incredibly laid-back attitude, but a determination to win and calculating the best route to the future is clear. I asked him of his plans: “I would love to turn professional one-day. But I am very tall and will need to watch the weight. I will certainly be staying amateur and pointing next season and after that who knows.” My next question was goals for the remainder of this season? He tells me: “To ride as many winners as possible, but I need to consider being able to ride in grass-roots next season.”
This weekend Woodford and Stafford Cross are on the agenda and with some nice rides planned it would be no surprise to see the tally rise. Hutsby is quick to credit Charlie Poste and Rodi Greene for all the help they have given him and says: “I am so lucky to have Charlie on the doorstep and Rodi has been brilliant too- there is always learning to do and they have both been brilliant.” Poste is clearly taken by Hutsby’s talent and says: “I have been working with Tom since we moved to Station Yard nearly ten years ago. It has

been a pleasure watching him progress. He has a natural feel for a race and the biggest change over the last 12 months in how tidy he has become for a tall man. I have no doubt that if he can stay injury free and has the luck required, he has the ability to have a successful riding career.”
Tom’s parents Caroline and Fred have travelled the country in support of their son throughout his life so far and will continue to do so and for that Hutsby expresses his gratitude. “Mum and dad have been incredible; I am very grateful to them.” They back this and Caroline explains: “Tom hasn’t been spoilt, he has ridden a variation of horses; maidens and everything along the way. We have tried to support him and guide him but also teach him; it isn’t easy.”
As a fifth-generation point-to-point jockey there is no doubt Hutsby is a name to follow and our chat ends with him saying: “Grandad would love it, he would be in his element and I am sure he would have added to the string.” No truer word- the late Ken Hutsby was a wonderful man who always stood proud when Fred was winning and we can be certain he is watching on full of pride.

IN THE FRAME

ON THE CLOCK
It has been a couple of years since I highlighted Mister Splash (108) after his maiden win and the same time had elapsed before he finally reached the winners enclosure again – making most to land the extended Conditions race at Higham on Good Friday. His Achilles Heel is a lack of turn of foot; however he tries hard and has run some good races in defeat this term behind horses of the calibre of L’Aventura and Mumbo Jumbo. He also has a habit of jumping to the right suggesting remaining fixtures at Peper Harow and Dingley might suit and, under these circumstances, he might be able to nick another small contest before the end of the season.
The Lady Dudley Cup was the highlight of the weekend’s racing and went the way again of Jeux D’Eau (98) who was winning it for the second consecutive year. Unfortunately, the winning time was relatively moderate and the race told us nothing new other than he remains in good heart. Still only a seven year old, Jeux D’Eau would not be out of place in the field for the Horse and Hound Cup at Stratford.
Jubertilee (112) has his quirks making him, perhaps, not the ideal ride for a novice but, led in at the start, he went kindly for Rian Corcoran and ran out a ready winner of the Grass Roots Riders race at Flete Park. He has yet to encounter underfoot conditions on the fast side of Good (the going was Good to Soft, Soft in places at Flete) and it will be interesting to see how he goes under a penalty through the final six weeks of the season.
The ground crew were universally praised for the surface they produced at Dingley and the fixture was rewarded with probably the highest quality fare on offer on the Saturday.
Amongst the familiar names on show – Largy Pearl and Wallace Ollinger for example- was the Nick Wright trained Fame and Concrete (106). Runner-up under a penalty in two of the hottest Restricted/Intermediates in the area, Fame and Concrete was surprisingly easy to back with punters preferring the Dale Peter’s runner Line Em Up. That rival failed to finish however leaving Fame and Concrete to run out a very easy winner. A sturdy, deep chested sort, he gives the impression there is much still to come although he was never tried over fences under Rules, can be inclined to be a little guessy at times and may be best kept to points for the time being.
It is to be hoped that lessons have been learned at Garthorpe where the prospect of effectively watered ground has attracted a decent set of entries. Crocodile Lounge re-appears for the first time since Didmarton and can take the Restricted and Cash and Card can finally deliver on his promise in the Conditions race. I’m Spellbound is listed in the Mixed Open but has better prospects in the Ladies at Woodford where Bennettsbridge can land the concluding maiden. It’s Luke Price’s time of year and the handler can win the maiden at Stafford Cross with Hogan Hell Red runs for the first time this season in the Hunt race and will be helped by any give in the ground. Finally at the new course at Pusk, Whatudoing will appreciate the drop in class in the Restricted but may be pushed all the way by Portgloriam, whilst it might be worth opposing 15 race maiden, She is the Enemy with Phantoms Cave in the last.
