An excellent evening’s racing at Stratford brought the curtain down on the Hunter chase season with near perfect going bringing the speed horses to the fore; all six winners have featured in this column over the past two seasons.
The centrepiece of the evening, the Horse and Hound Cup went the way of What A Glance (114) who followed up his fast time win at Cheltenham’s evening meeting with a comfortable victory over Life Me Up Vastly improved and more consistent this season What A Glance is well suited by extended trips but equally can find a good turn of foot.
Conversely, Lift Me Up (110) despite running an excellent race in second, will be better dropping down in distance.
The PPRC sponsored John Corbet Cup was run in around six seconds faster time than the feature, thanks to the front running Go Go Geronimo A sustained early gallop soon had favourite Iskandar Pecos (126) on the back foot and with Go Go Geronimo fading away on the run to the last it was left to Forest Chimes (128) to land the prize. He has made steady progress since winning in the soft at Bitterley last season – stepping up considerably on his last two outings. Admirably suited by a flat track, a return visit here for next season’s Horse and Hound seems a more feasible longterm target than the Cheltenham Foxhunters.
Famous Clermont (128) was the evening’s other stand out performance on the clock. He’s not quite been running to the same level as last term but was always travelling well here, so well in fact that he took up the running at the fifth of the 17 obstacles and remained in command to the line. There is no better Hunter over distances short of three miles.
Imperial Esprit (120) was a valiant second. He’s been in good form lately and this was a lifetime best.
The previous Monday Billy Two Rivers (104) again posted a time figure several pound in advance of his form rating when landing the Chaddesley Restricted. Possibly aided by the early departure of the equally promising Yellow Car, it nevertheless needed a good performance to see off What’s the Solution (108) – the latter having won in fast time at the Derwent. Billy Two Rivers has the size and scope to progress further next season.
Beyond Redemption (116) posted the day’s fastest figure when running out an easy winner of the opening Novice Rider’s race He had been disappointing for Harry Derham’s yard, winning just the once, but had previously been a multiple winner in Irish points and seems far more at home over the slightly smaller obstacles. On this evidence he looks booked for further success next season.
Another to follow next year is All Star Boy (110) who took the South Tetcott Restricted, cosily, by half a length, from Jean Genie – the pair well clear The winner had been unable to hold a candle to Bushtucker Park at Holnicote previously, but that race was over two and a half miles, and he looked better suited to the standard trip
One who seems well suited to shorter trips however is Sforza Castle (106) who posted a figure almost a stone in advance of his form rating when taking the short Restricted at the South Cornwall. He is clearly at home on a sound surface.
One to watch – All Star Boy (Will Biddick)

REPORTS
SOUTH CORNWALL
FRIDAY 31ST MAY 2024
By Granville Taylor“They think it’s all over” well it’s not.
The National awards might have been dished out at the end of May, but pointto-pointing goes on in the West Country up until the June 8th finale at Umberleigh.
The South Cornwall Hunt deserve credit for re-arranging their abandoned April fixture to last Friday evening (May 31st). This excellent viewing Cornish venue welcomed travellers (and winners) from Wales and the Cotswolds.
It was the locals who struck in the first two races for jockey Darren Edwards and trainer Dean Summersby. In the opening Hunt race Jet Smart had little difficulty in recording his fifth victory of the season over sole rival Great D’Ange (Myles Osborne). Sixyear-old Jet Smart has given a lot of fun to his group of owners Belinda Fuller, Tony and Eileen Worth, Shirley Roberts and Les Roberts.”He enjoyed that and quickened nicely He will have an entry for Umberleigh” (June 8th) said the trainer
Dorrells Pierji has also hit a winning streak for the Lifton yard and readily followed up his Upcott Cross success just four days ago with Edwards peeping round at his four pursuers. With the 11-year-old gelding still looking fresh afterwards, Dean revealed that his Trebudannon runners had enjoyed an early morning outing to the seaside saying, “We took them to the beach at Bude at six o’clock this morning. It helps them relax and stretch their muscles.”
14-year-old Raven’s Pass finished a brave second to Dorrells Pierji for Sophie and Ben Pauling, but the Naunton based couple made their long trip to Cornwall pay off when Sforza Castle, in Sophie’s colours, took the Restricted under their young jockey Elliot England. The well bred Milan six-year-old had opened his account at Lockinge and justified favouritism here. “We bought him as a store and he wasn’t cheap Elliot gave him a good ride” said the trainer The 20-year-old rider, who works for the Pauling yard, was partnering his fourth winner and said, “The plan was to keep him handy so I kept him in touch and he stayed on really well.”
Hell Red started odds-on favourite under Darren Edwards in the Mixed Open and looked an assured winner until Joly Maker, under Will Biddick, found a turn of foot after the last and got up near the line Formerly a useful chaser, Joly Maker had recently joined the Danielle Kenealy yard “We have only just had him. He has been giving Jonjo O’Neill’s lads a few rides this year,” said Joe Tickle, representing his partner who was saddling a winner on the flat for the couple at Chepstow.
Will Biddick looked like winning the Level 3 Conditions race on Between You and Me, but the seven-year-old was caught on the run in by strong finishing Joey Steel. The 11-year-old finished with such zest that he couldn’t stop and careered round a full circuit with Ella Herbison doing an unscheduled lap of honour He is owned
and trained by Jimmy Cole at Lewdown who said, “He is the only horse I have got and has been second four times this year I ride him on our own and we fall out every day. He is tricky.” The popular ex-jockey went on to pay tribute to Christian Williams. “I must thank Christian because he let me have him. I sent him the money from his earlier places for his daughter Betsy’s fund.”
It had been quite a hazy evening and the concluding Maiden was delayed by 15 minutes as the low sunshine (or was it the moonlight?) shone in the horses’ faces down the back straight. In the end one of the jumps was omitted. In a blanket finish Ed Vaughan threaded his way through to score on the ex-French six-year-old Imaginaire. Ghost Jury (Gary Derwin) charged up the rails late to finish second with Will Biddick’s mount Jambo, who had led at the last, close up in third. Tim Vaughan said of his winner, “We thought he was a nice horse and we were a bit baffled that he didn’t win earlier We tried new tactics today and dropped him in. He will probably go under rules now.”

THE TIVERTON STAGHOUNDS
SUNDAY 2ND JUNE 2024
By Granville Taylor“Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this sun”… Richard III, William Shakespeare 1564-1616
You are spot on Mr Shakespeare. After the disappointing memories of the postponements and cancellations of the wet spring, we were blessed with a perfect afternoon with Exmoor seen at its best. Local pointing enthusiasts were out in force enjoying competitive point-to-point racing with a massive crowd basking in warm sunshine
A total of 45 runners lined up for the six races which featured a double for champion novice jockey Ed Vaughan, plus one of the best Ladies’ Opens seen in the area this season
The Vaughan lorry clocked up another 280 miles to add to numerous trips up and down the UK this season, and the visit to Bratton Down was amply rewarded.
Tim Vaughan’s Glamorgan qualified State of Fame successfully upgraded to Intermediate company, but had to pull out all the stops to catch Champions Hill on the line in the race sponsored by Moore Scarrott. “He had lost his form on the soft ground after winning at Great Trethew. I just wanted him to settle just behind today and he did it well,” said Vaughan the younger
Ringsend John completed Ed Vaughan’s double in the colours of Luke Price. The strong gelding led his ten rivals a merry dance in the Witheridge Garage Restricted, jumping soundly and comfortably holding Maple Leaf The eight-year-old is likely to have a future under rules. 16-year-old Vaughan was partnering his 30th winner of the season, equalling the record total for a novice set by James Bowen in 2017
Anna Johnston is the champion lady novice rider this year and partnered John Dorse’s Walkin Out to win the Greenslade Taylor Hunt Ladies’ Open after a sustained battle on the run in with the Jo Supple ridden His Own Star Lakota Warrior and Ella Herbison took their six rivals along at a

strong pace and were still in with a chance at the last, but on the steep climb to the judge the winner and runner up raced clear, locked together like prize fighters. Walkin Out got the verdict, cleared of any interference after a brief steward’s enquiry
The gallant Ninth Wave is a Bratton Down specialist and took the ucanstore.com Mens’ Open to notch his fifth win on this track, drawing clear of Len Brennan and Slievegar from the final bend. Owned by Peter and Kathy Musgrave, the ten-year-old was gaining his 11th point-to-point success He is one of only two horses stabled with Teresa Clark on the Quantocks and was ridden by Callum Pritchard. “This was the hardest race he has had. He was never really travelling but is so game and we never looked like being beaten,” reported the rider who will be turning conditional at the end of July
Josh Newman has also brought a National title to the West Country this year The Woolminstone handler is the leading trainer in the category of 15 horses plus

and saddled and rode Holiday Fund to win the Maiden. The five-year-old looked to have a lot to do round the final bend, but stayed on in impressive style to catch Whatchagotder (Sean O’Connor) in the dying strides. “We bought him from Sean Doyle It was too soft for him on his two runs in Ireland but he is progressing nicely He is for sale,” said Kayley Woollacott who runs the ownership group The Blackmore Racing Club
Diligent made all to win the Winston Pincombe Land Rovers Hunt race in the hands of Shannon Holmes. The 11-yearold runs in the colours of The Devon Diamond Friends and is trained by the rider’s grandmother Mary Sanderson who said. “We took the gag off and used a bar bit today. Shannon gave him a good, positive ride.” The 18-year-old jockey, who has ridden Diligent to both his wins this season, is based with Nigel Hawke.
