ON THE CLOCK
Nick Wilson reviews the action from last Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday
It’s been a productive last part of the season for horses flagged up in this column with recent follow-up victories for the likes of Jet Smart, Ffree Pedro and Bumpy Evans. However its fair to say there have also been some reverses – one being the failure of Humaniste to land the odds at the Exmoor A back-end, three runner Ladies event held on fast ground is not perhaps the safest of betting mediums and is indeed one not easy to rate on form, with the protagonists well stretched out at the finish. One could be forgiven for simply accepting that Humaniste is no easy ride and failed to put his best foot forward on this occasion with L’air Du Vent (116) taking full advantage However the resultant time figure suggests that this was an improved performance from the winner, who had been fairly consistent since a surprise victory at Larkhill in late February Suited by the lighter weights of the Ladies race here, L’Air Du Vent is also effective over shorter distances and, given a drier Spring next season, looks sure to add to his tally
Whilst the eyes of many were on the enthralling Ladies Jockey’s title battle, it was also a week where novice riders were to the fore Ed Vaughan had the Men’s novice title sewn up long ago but rode a treble at Cherrybrook including a wide margin victory aboard Maska Du Morvan (93) The winner had indicated improvement when runner-up in a strongly run maiden at Trecoed four days earlier and made no mistake here. Driving rain and the omission of several fences after the second race makes sectional comparisons a little hazardous but at face value they suggest that Maska du Morvan ,who showed a good turn of foot from halfway, could even be rated a little higher
Vaughan also rode a double at Kingston Blount the following Sunday but here it was Katie Featherstone who stole the plaudits following a confident display on her own Secret Cargo (114) Well suited to shorter trips, Secret Cargo was delivered late in a strongly run race to seal the deal at the last His figure suggests a full return to the form he showed under Rules back in 2022 and the duo look set for more success in the South East next season.

REPORTS
THE SPOONERS & WEST DARTMOOR FOXHOUNDS
WEDNESDAY 22ND MAY 2024
By Granville Taylor
“It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath” – William Shakespeare; Merchant of Venice.
Yes Mr Shakespeare, but after Spooner’s postponement due to the waterlogged course at Easter, we have had too much of the wet stuff and did not expect a soaking on a Wednesday evening in late May.
But this is Dartmoor The angry black clouds emptied steady rain over Cherrybrook as mist encircled the moor The ground softened further, but the resilient point-topoint followers were treated to a fine treble from Novice champion Ed Vaughan plus a thrilling duel in the twilight between leading ladies’ Gina Andrews and Izzie Marshall.
Ed Vaughan rode the first three winners as he continues his march towards the National Novice Riders’ championship The Luke Price gelding Captain MC was not exactly foot perfect, but made a successful quick re-appearance to win the Hunt race following his Bratton Down effort just three days ago
The youngster’s other winners were each saddled by his father Tim. Vaughan cleverly slipped his field after half way to send seven-year-old mare Maska du Morvan clear of her four opponents in the Maiden. The Glamorgan mare had drifted from 5-4 out to 5-2, but was always holding the odds-on favourite Atlantic Lad.
The runners in the first two races had done a demolition job on a couple of the jumps so both the open ditch and the last fence had to be omitted for the rest of the card as the rain set in. This failed to deter Restricted winner Bumpy Evans who was soon well in front and skipped round to score unchallenged.
“I am in a hurry to do my final A level exam on Friday” quipped the rider, partnering his 25th winner of the season.
This is a game of ups and downs however and it wasn’t long before a crashing fall
from Siberian Star in the Mixed Open saw the Welsh schoolboy eventually limp away from the third fence. This race went to Ron Alford’s His Own Star, signifying a welcome return to form for trainer Stuart Sampson and jockey Jo Supple
The Owners and Trainers Conditions race provided a first winner on her third ride for 20-year-old jockey Izzy Lever. Riding Millbank Flyer in the colours of her mother Suzie, the inexperienced jockey delivered her challenge to perfection to draw away from front running Champions Hill after the third last. “He was always going well and jumped out of my hands,” said the young rider who trains the nine-year-old herself alongside working for the Blandford Forum yard of Mark Gillard.
In the fading light the last race featured the continuing championship battle
between the two leading lady jockeys. Gina Andrews made a positive move to send the Dean Summersby trained Lakota Warrior to the front by passing the damaged open ditch on the first circuit. Izzie was always stalking on Alan Hill’s charge Urban Grit however and with Clever des Assence seen off, Gina increased the pace from the third last. A tight finish looked assured rounding the omitted final jump, but it was Lakota Warrior who grabbed the upper hand inside the last 100 yards.
So the National ladies’ title is still up for grabs leaving perpetual holder Gina three wins adrift of Izzie as we enter the final weeks of the season. Ed Vaughan is assured of the Novice Riders’ trophy and James King is set to wrestle the men’s award from Will Biddick.

THE FITZWILLIAM (MILTON) HUNT
SATURDAY 25TH MAY 2024
By Nico Morgan
The weather gods were kind in the run up to the final meeting of the Midlands Area season and the going at Dingley was declared to be good across the course for the Fitzwilliam meeting on May 25th.
38 runners contested six races across the card, with both Dale Peters and Jack Teal recording doubles and Gina Ellis/.Andrews completing a win which moves her ever closer to the unbelievable achievement of 400 winners in point-to-points.
The Ladies Open race turned out to be the swansong for jockey Kate Gowing, who announced after the race that she would not be riding in points again. Her family had two horses entered here, Not That Fuisse, trained by Gina Ellis, and No Hassle Hoff, from the Turners’ yard near Bury St Edmunds. Rather than not declare one, she offered the ride on the former to Gina, who had never raced the eleven-year-old before. Gina led for the majority of the race but was overtaken by Gowing who looked to be going out in style before No Hassle Hoff slowed suddenly just before the last and lost all momentum. They were overtaken by Ellie Callwood on Precious Bounty, Gina Ellis on Not That Fuisse and Izzie Marshall on Golden Tobouggan, but it was Ellis who had the running to snatch victory in the run-in. Cue photos with two jockeys in the frame, one as owner, the other as rider
The Mens Open saw a very impressive performance by Daniel Cherriman’s Reikers Island who flew off to a big early lead and proceeded to make all the running. It was only in the final stages that spectators began to worry that he might not have enough left to finish the job, but he rallied and held off a spirited challenge from Take To Heart (Paddy Barlow) to win by a neck.
The day’s racing began with a level 2 Conditions race with seven runners which was led for most of the race by Gina Andrews on Killinkere, before being headed with two to jump The pair who timed their move to perfection were the five-year-old Alan Hill-trained Soldier Unknown (Izzie Marshall) – already a triple winner in points – and last year’s winner of this same race, favourite Thunderstruck (Dale Peters) who
ran on the clear winner by twelve lengths. “Thunderstruck needs to go right handed and, ideally, decent ground and this was the first time he’s had the two together this season,” Peters said.
Not satisfied with one, Dale Peters followed this up immediately with a second winner, this time on Mountain Assault. This was one of the best finishes of the day, though, as Peters was pushed all the way by Jack Teal on Star Present and James King on Get Cracking who both finished within a length and a half of the winner Dale Peters said, “Mountain Assault has had a nightmare of a season. He was ready to run end of February when he had a nasty accident coming home from a piece of work and nearly cut his hind leg off, and that’s no exaggeration. We’ve been up against it to get him back to run this time so was really satisfying to see him run like that. He’s pretty talented and has no miles on him for his age So hopefully we get a clean run at him next season.”
The day’s racing concluded with two maiden races. The first was over the traditional three miles and was led almost from start to finish by the Andrew Pennock-trained Jasmin des Bordes (Mrs V. Frost) until they were caught in the run-in by Jack Teal and King’s Charger, who had been last for much of the race “I’ve not had him [King’s Charger] long,” Jack said, “I got him from Richie McGrath as an unraced seven-year-old. He was very green at Hexham and again today, but we got the job done., which is awesome.” Jasmin des
Bordes was beaten by a neck, with Freestyle Fighter trained by Steve Wynn and ridden by Henry Bailey.
Finally we had a two-and-half-mile Maiden race which did have weight allowances for age Twelve runners came to the starter but once again it was Jack Teal and Callmesusie who hit the front with one to jump and went on to win comfortably by four lengths from Lady Lamorna (William Thirlby), with Pappillondelumiere (Paddy Barlow) a little way back in third. Jack Teal said, “She deserves it, Callmesusie I’m chuffed to get winner for Paul Clifton. Paul sponsors me as a rider and he’s a big supporter of the yard, so I’m delighted to get one on a board for him. It’s been a long while coming because although this mare’s always gone very well at home it’s been a case of just getting the key to her on the track. Took a bit of time She’s good at pulling up!”
That concludes the 2024 Midlands Point-topoint season, during which we lost a number of fixtures to the weather We would very much like to thank all those members of public, trainers, owners and particularly our volunteers for all the hard work that they put in throughout the season to provide the sport. Midlands Pointing fixtures will begin again in January 2025 fixtures fixture dates will be announced in due course after they have been finalised, so please keep an eye on the fixtures pages on our website for up-todate information for your diary next year

BERKS & BUCKS DRAGHOUNDS
SUNDAY 26TH MAY 2024
By Russell Smith
Alan Hill praised Izzie Marshall after his stable jockey took a major step towards being crowned ladies’ champion with a thrilling win on IK Brunel at the Berks & Bucks Draghounds Point-to-Point meeting at Kingston Blount, near Chinnor
Having seen title rival Gina Andrews cut her lead to one with victory on I’m Spellbound at Sunday’s fixture, Marshall went head-to-head with the 10-time champion in the Dickie Lim Memorial Mixed Open.
Andrews made much of the running on Tigerbythetail, before Marshall’s mount took a narrow lead at the fourth-last and the pair duelled over the final three fences, with IK Brunel edging a battle royal by half a length.
The winner returned to huge cheers, and Hill, who trains at nearby Aston Rowant, said: “I think this championship has brought out the best of Izzie Marshall’s riding. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her ride with so much desire, but very sensibly as well. She is just riding the races that horses need. She is thinking about it, and she is loving it.”
Marshall added: “I just wanted to time it for the right moment because IK takes a while to get rolling. He jumped very well down the back straight. The dream’s still alive.”
The 10-year-old is owned by the IK Brunel Partnership, consisting of Lynn and Martin Redman, Rodney and Gillie Mann and Maurice Thomas, with Lynn commenting: “What a horse and Izzie is just amazing. We love her to bits. She tries so hard.”
IK Brunel was returning to winning ways after finishing second at Fakenham last month, and Hill added: “I would not say that’s the best race he has ever run for us, but it’s the gutsiest. They have served up a treat – the two leading women in the country jumping the last two upsides – and it is good for the sport.”
It felt like the defining race in a titanic tussle between the pair – and so it proved as the National Championships finished at Chaddesley Corbett on Bank Holiday Monday with Marshall claiming a first crown with the final score 24-21.
Andrews had enjoyed a smooth success on I’m Spellbound in the preceding JM Finn Conditions Race (Level 3).
The multiple champion, who also trains the eight-year-old for the Signy & Marriage Families at Marton, near Rugby, took up the running five from home, and her mount swept clear to score by 13 lengths from Back It Up and Dale Peters.
After returning to cries of ‘Oi, Oi’ and cheers which continued into the weighing room as a downpour hit the track, Andrews said: “He was back to his best. He had a really bad fall at Larkhill when he was going to win, and it has taken until now to get his confidence back. We have always thought he was a good horse and things have not gone right for him.”
Andrews and Lunar Contact were sent off evens favourite to reduce the gap again in the Old Rectory Stud Restricted Race only for the six-year-old to take a heavy fall at the third-last as Ffree Pedro initiated a double for rider Ed Vaughan and trainer Bradley Gibbs.
Thankfully, Lunar Contact and Andrews, who were in third at the time, emerged unscathed.
Vaughan, the runaway winner of the men’s novice championship, had set out to make all on Ffree Pedro and the Tim Talbot-owned eight-year-old was left clear when Starevitch slipped up on the bend approaching the second-last to pass the post 17 lengths ahead of Serenisa and Walter Barnett.
Gibbs, who trains at Lemsford, near Welwyn Garden City, said: “He ran last week and won very well at Tabley. I thought he was in good order – he didn’t come off the bridle He could run once more after a week off.”

Vaughan added: “He was not doing a lot in front. He ran over hurdles (for Donald McCain) and knows his job He is quite streetwise.”
Gibbs and Vaughan completed their double when L’Aventara got off the mark in the closing Thorn Plant Hire Maiden.
Taking up the running five from home, the six-year-old daughter of Kayf Tara stayed on powerfully to pass the post 12 lengths ahead of Jullou De Grissay and Charlie Case
Reflecting on a stunning first campaign, the 16-year-old rider added: “It has been an unbelievable season. Many thanks to mum and dad for putting me up and having so many runners in pointing. I knew I had a couple to go to war with through the winter, but 27 winners and a walkover is phenomenal. I couldn’t have dreamed about this.”
Gibbs was delighted to provide Vaughan with a double, saying: “Ed is only two behind James Bowen’s record for novice winners in a season. I worked for Ed’s father, Tim, for six or seven years, and had a lot of chances off him, so it’s good to repay him.”
L’Aventara was bred by her Bedfordshirebased owner Chris Harriman out of his 2005 Welsh National winner L’Aventure, who passed away a few years ago
“I have been lucky,” he said. “I bred a number of them and all of them out of her have won.
Ed gave her a great ride and was confident on her It was good to see she was strong at the end.”
Katie Featherstone produced a well-judged ride on Secret Cargo to deny Tight Call and Vaughan in the SEA Transport PPORA Club Members Conditions Race (Level 2), for Novice Riders.
Vaughan’s mount went clear on the final circuit in the 2m 5f contest, but Featherstone timed her challenge to perfection on her 10-year-old, collaring the leader at the last to win going away by four and a half lengths.
The owner-trainer-rider, who is based at Wadhurst in Sussex, said: “He is really good fun. He is such a good jumper, which really helps. He ran on really well.”
The success saw Featherstone join Natasha Cookson and Anna Johnston on four winners at the top of the lady novice riders’ championship, only missing the title on countback of placed rides.
On an afternoon when all six favourites were beaten, Captain Woodie set the ball rolling by winning the Little Red Owner-Trainer Conditions Race (Level 3) for the second successive year

Lambourn, into the lead after the secondlast and, despite a slow jump at the final fence, his mount had enough in hand to hold off the staying-on Imperial Acolyte and Featherstone by two lengths.
The 12-year-old had not been seen since failing to complete at Larkhill on New Year’s Eve, and Morgan, who works for Nicky Henderson where he became friends with Mitchell, explained: “He hit a fence and a bit of birch stuck in his leg. He had a haematoma and I’ve waited for that to heal up.”
Mitchell added: “He is a brilliant old ride I actually broke Captain Woodie in as a store. The horse has had so many issues and Lewis has spent a lot of money and time getting him right. Lewis and the horse deserve it.”
The winning rider is now looking forward to a fresh challenge “I am moving to Gary Moore’s in July and plan to turn pro,” he revealed.
The fixture also featured the Berks & Bucks Draghound Race, sponsored by Tyreteam, with Dartmoor winning for the second time in three years.

THE EXMOOR FOXHOUNDS
SUNDAY 26TH MAY 2024
By Granville Taylor
The second of three successive Sunday fixtures at Bratton Down saw some ease in the ground after overnight rain came just in time for the Exmoor fixture.
Course winner Humaniste was sent off 8-13 favourite for the three runner Bray Leino sponsored Ladie’s Open, but failed to sparkle and was no match for the Jemma Sargent owned and trained L’Air du Vent. Formerly a winner under rules for Brocade Racing, the 10-year-old was acquired out of Joe Tizzard’s yard where Jemma rides out. “He prefers a short course and loves quick ground,” she remarked. Megan Bevan, who works for the Harry Fry yard, was partnering her third winner of the season and produced a decisive race winning move going to the final ditch.
Boys Will Be Boys gained a deserved victory under Will Biddick in the colours of Charlotte and James Townshend in the Restricted sponsored by Heddon Mill Construction. The five-year-old made all the running and survived a blunder at the last to hold the sustained challenge of Liwah. Trainer
Emberscombe, James Shaw (1st) nearside, comes to challenge Cuzzicombe, Chloe Emsley (3rd) at the last fence, Hunt Members Race
Michael Felton explained, “He was bought at Doncaster last year after his Maiden win in Ireland. I was a bit easy on him and he wasn’t fully fit early in the season. He likes the sun on his back and prefers top of the ground.”
Josh Newman finished a head second on Liwah, but had little difficulty in steering Dr Rhythm to an easy victory over sole rival Manofmanywords in the Riverside Caravan & Camping Park Men’s Open. Owned by Tina Dunsford and Peter Clarke, and stabled at Bishops Nympton with Keith Cumings, the 11 –year-old is a West Country legend and was enjoying his 14th pointing victory
Newman went on to finish the afternoon in the runner up spot again as five-year-old Holiday Fund went under to Max Comley’s Killard Point (Darren Andrews) in the Maiden sponsored by Risdons Solicitors. The sixyear-old had finished runner up twice, but the owner/trainer was adamant that “He didn’t get the run of the race when beaten at Cothelstone recently.”
Dorrells Pierji followed up last week’s course win with a comfortable success under Darren Edwards in the older horses Conditions race which has been sponsored by the Kingdon family in memory of Donna Kingdon for several years. “He is in such good form and we might come back here next Sunday,” said trainer Dean Summersby.
The odds-on favourite Cuzzicombe looked the winner of the RSM Beares & Brian Thorne & Son sponsored Hunt race until folding up on the stiff uphill climb to the judge Emberscombe, running in the colours of the Exmoor Partners made famous by Southwestern a few years ago, was driven past to take the honours. Stoodleigh based trainer Danielle Kenealy reported, “She came to us from Jeremy Scott in January after a few runs under rules. She has had a few niggly problems but ran a lovely race.”
21-year-old James Shaw was riding his third career winner and said of his mount, “She was so brave. She slipped on the last bend but winged the last.”

THE ALBRIGHTON & WOODLAND HUNT
MONDAY 27TH MAY 2024
By Andrew King
The progressive Ihandaya extended his winning sequence to four since switching postcodes earlier this year and joining the Nicky Sheppard team when landing the Ladies Open in gritty style at the expense of Macklin.
Having won his three races to date this term, Macklin came into the race in top form and the added bonus of Gina Andrews in the saddle saw him sent off Evens favourite in a tight market.
However, market rival and 11-10 chance Ihandaya, partnered by Natalie Parker, refused to be denied and got the better of the argument in a duel up the home straight for a three lengths call.
Jubilant owner Clive Hitchings was all smiles and said afterwards: “We were obviously worried about Macklin but Ihandaya has done really well to see him off He is only six-years-old and has his future ahead of him, hopefully.”
When asked about plans for next term, Hitchings added: “Maybe he can develop into a horse that might be good enough for a tilt at the Cheltenham Foxhunters as he might develop into a stronger horse after a good summer break
“It’s long, long way from standing in a field in Worcestershire to the Festival next March but we are all entitled to have a bit of a dream as that’s what keeps us going at this game.”
While Ihandaya had to show some battling qualities to secure his success, quite the opposite was true of One For Rosie who faced a relatively simple task with only three rivals turning up in the Mens Open.
He passed the test with flying colours as Tommie O’Brien only had to push out Jason Maguire’s charge up the home run for a comfortable verdict over Galileo Silver
Maguire said: “It’s a shame for Ryan (Alderman), who works in the yard at home and usually rides the horse as he is side-lined with a back injury following a fall at present but Tommie has proved an able deputy.”
He added of the 11-year-old, who is owned by his wife Lauren: “It’s great to sign off for the season on a winning note and we will be back next Autumn for another go as the old horse enjoys his days out.”
The Jockey Club Novice Champion Final For Mares And Fillies was salvaged from the abandoned Berkeley Meeting last month much to the delight of trainer Ollie Bowd after he sent out Imperial Pride to land the prize under Jack Andrews.
Bowd, who works for David Dennis said: “The mare was a maiden at the start of the season but she has worked her way through the ranks in good style She may well switch back to racing under Rules now.”
Cropredy Lawn-based Dawn Ball has struck form with a vengeance over the past couple of weeks and saddled her fourth winner in that period after Billy Two Rivers, ridden by Ellie Callwood, shaded out What’s The Solution by half-a-length for the Restricted.
Ball commented: “It’s amazing how things have taken off in the last few weeks but that’s racing. On the other side of the coin our present base at Cropredy Lawn is being put up for sale by owner Paul Webber so we will
probably have to find somewhere else over the summer.”
Rupert Wilks, 20, has struck up a great association with Beyond Redemption this term and the partnership delivered for the second time with a clear cut 15 lengths success from Western Cowboy in the Conditions contest for Novice Riders.
The rider said; “He has been a great servant to me this year as every time he has completed he has been placed and now he has won twice as well. So we will definitely be back pointing in the Autumn and take it from there.”
The Maiden ended up being divided with the result that Alan Hill’s Castadrift ran out an easy winner of the first division while the second leg of the contest went the way of Scarlet Jet from the Francesca Poste yard Connections of both winners confirmed they are destined down the Sales route.
The concluding bumper was also oversubscribed and became two divisions with Steal The Moves, partnered by Freddie Mitchell, landing the first heat and Lady Fortune with James King in the saddle proving the answer to the second.

THE SOUTH TETCOTT HUNT
MONDAY 27TH MAY 2024
By Granville Taylor
The Point-to-Point Authority had already directed that this Bank Holiday would be the cut off point for all the National awards for the 2024 season with the two fixtures at Chaddesley Corbett and Upcott Cross.
A first and last race double clinched a first ever National trainers title for Josh Newman at Upcott Cross This is the category for 15 or more horses, and the Woolminstone, near Crewkerne handler topped the list by saddling 28 winners, narrowly ahead of Alan Hill and Max Comley.
Newman struck with Whitsand Bay in the opener before Bruce Gobbler set the champagne flowing in winning the last.
Ella Herbison took the mount on John and Sonia Gardener’s progressive Whitsand Bay to win the Grass Roots Conditions race sponsored by Totnes & Bridgetown Races Company. The eight-year-old was left in front when long time leader Step Back fell at the penultimate and just saw off the strong challenge of Premier D’Troice (James Earnshaw). “He is a strong stayer and the plan was to wait as long as possible I might even have come too soon,” reported Ella.
It was left to Bruce Gobbler to put the finishing touch to the title bid in the FC
Cleaning Systems Maiden. The mount of Darren Andrews, the Blue Bresil gelding just got the better of fellow five-year-old Chateau du Lys after a spirited duel from the last. The winner runs in the familiar Unity Farm colours of Richard House and had a few runs from the Hobbs/White yard last season. “We think he was unsuited by mud and he seems to like being in a smaller yard He jumped and travelled well today,” was the jockey’s summary
Jet Smart is in pole position to take the Devon & Cornwall Novice horse award (points in the area count up to and including Umberleigh). The six-year-old scored for the fourth time this season under Darren Edwards in the Simpkins Edwards Level 1 Conditions race, helping the Lifton trainer to lift the National trainers title for 6 to 14 horses. Jet Smart stayed on strongly to beat recent Exeter winner Hearts Corner “He relaxed well and has gears to quicken,” related the delighted trainer who thinks highly of the gelding and is in no hurry to give him stiffer tests.
Edwards completed his double thanks to 33-1 outsider Assassins Lullaby in the Maiden Conditions race sponsored by PRJ Engineering. “They went too fast,” said the experienced rider, setting up his eighth winning ride from his last 10 mounts. The long standing maiden strode clear of some better fancied rivals to win virtually unchallenged despite clumsy jumps at the last two fences. Having been treated for
ulcers recently, the Janet Ackner trained gelding, in the colours of the Everhopeful Partnership, never looked in danger of defeat.
Edwards had to settle for the runner up spot in the Dunbia sponsored Mixed Open as Young Buck went down by a head to 8-1 chance Sizing Cusimano after blundering at the last.
Purdy Peaster had the mount on the winner who was repeating last year’s success in this race 23-year-old Purdy is a work rider for Joe Tizzard and said, ”He dislikes soft ground really but loves this track and flew down the hill.”
Christopher Barber saddled his 10th winner of the season when All Star Boy just held the challenge of Jean Genie (Ed Vaughan) to win the Giffords Chartered Accountants Restricted. Eight times champion jockey Will Biddick, who has ceded his title to James King this year, was riding his 34th winner of the campaign and said, “He jumped well and did it easily.”
So, with titles decided this Bank Holiday was deemed to be the climax to a very wet season that really never got into swing thanks to numerous cancellations and postponements. It was a surreal feeling that titles had to be handed out with three fixtures still left in the West Country – a bit like awarding Manchester City the premier league trophy with three games left.
