It’s rare for a horse to post an Open class figure in a Level 3 Conditions race but that’s exactly what Dorrrells Pierji (FR) (120) achieved when bounding clear of the progressive Skilful Lord at the Dulverton West This performance rates over a stone better than his previous efforts this season but there was no fluke about the victory A glance through his resume shows that a couple of years ago he was a 130 rated hurdler with Dan Skelton and was capable of even better in Ireland back in 2018 when winning at Galway for Willie Mullins. He had shown his best form over hurdles at distances well short of three miles and the lightning-fast conditions and sharp turns at Bratton Down clearly helped him to stay the trip Bratton Down has seen many a course specialist over the years and Dorrells Pierji looks to start a warm order to follow up at the course in a week’s time.
The Northern season came to an end at Hexham where Shantou’s Temple (100) finished well clear in the NonWeight-For- Age maiden He had been close-up behind Modder River in a fast time maiden at Overton the time before, a race that had subsequently provided a hunter chase winner in Dressedtoimpress, and Shantou’s Temple looks capable of further success His dam won 6 points.
Rocky Creed (112) had defeated the aforementioned Modder River at Lockinge at Easter and ran out a good winner of the Restricted at Cothelstone There were some in-form horses behind, and he looks capable of carrying a penalty
Caryto Des Brosses (118) returned to form with a vengeance at Edgcote, getting the better of the wellsupported Golan Fortune Now twelve years of age, it has been a pleasure to watch this grand campaigner over the years, with his forward running style and sound jumping technique transcending well-documented health problems. Winner of 14 out of 26 starts this may well have been his swansong and, if so, what a triumphant way to bow out.
Earlier on the card Billy Two Rivers (108) got off the mark with a wide margin victory in the maiden Cheaply bought, he had cut little ice in six previous starts in Ireland but had run with promise on his GB debut at Mollington and made no mistaken here His trainer Dawn Ball has done extremely well this season with a small string which also numbers Well P, who landed the preceding Members race
The intriguingly named Ffree Pedro (104) was another a maiden winner to impress over the weekend. An exinmate of the Donald McCain yard, he had shown only a modicum of ability over hurdles, where all his efforts had been on softish ground. Despite an early official description of Good to Soft, the Tabley going was definitely on the fast side, becoming quicker as the day progressed, and this suited Ffree Pedro admirably Well supported beforehand, he disputed the lead for much of the contest before drawing clear from the equally well backed Sabre Rattling on the run to the last He looked to have a fair amount in hand passing the post and more success seems assured for this enthusiastic sort.

WEDNESDAY 15TH MAY 2024
By Kirsty BoutflowerThe curtain came down on the Wessex Area Point to Point on Wednesday evening at the Weston & Banwell and West Somerset Vale meeting at Cothelstone Always popular with local racegoers and participants, the decent sized crowd were treated to some good racing with a riding double for Martin McIntyre, veteran Shantou Flyer showing age is no problem and a pulsating finish to the Ladies Open.
Jockey Izzie Marshall has thrown down the gauntlet to long time Ladies Champion, Gina Andrews and another winner on Back Bar last night pushed her two clear Sent off even money favourite, Izzie dictated for much of the way taking the fresh ground on the inner L’Air du Vent under Megan Bevan, however tried to make life
hard for her and when Sizing Cusimano joined in there were three in line over the second last with all to play for. But Izzie galvanised Back Bar to get up for a narrow win although it took a few minutes for the judge to make the announcement. Trainer Alan Hill, who will soon be Izzie’s father in law, said afterwards, “I have about 15 horses left to run and we are doing all we can to support Izzie so she wins the title I’m hoping that a few more trainers will do the same as she’s a very talented rider and really deserves this.”
Shantou Flyer has been a popular sight on Wessex courses over the past 6 seasons and although reaching the twilight of his career, still had enough class to fend off the challenge of the tough and consistent Dr
Magic and Charlie Marshall (1st) Conditions (Level 2)
Rhythm. Both horses had won last time out at South Hill with the winner giving young Billy Broomfield the second winner of his career With Olive Nicholls still feeling sore from her fall from this horse at Stafford Cross when he uncharacteristically ran out, it was left to Billy to do the steering again. Jumping well throughout, Shantou Flyer always slightly had the upper hand and prevailed by 5 lengths at the line Paul Nicholls was on hand to greet his winner and remarked. “He’s some kid for his age!” about 16 year old Billy who currently works for him while Olive confirmed that she hoped to be back in the saddle next week.
Another long-time favourite, Posh Totty, was present in the form of her son, Posh Dude and he confirmed the promise of
Enchanted Photo: Tim Holthis debut run in a bumper at Milborne St Andrew when he took the second division of the maiden under Will Biddick for thrilled owner-breeder Jeremy Barber and a relieved trainer Harry Ryall who is also Jeremy’s tenant. Although the Max Comley trained favourite, Just Her Type tried hard to wear down the winner, Will admitted afterwards, “He’s literally like a terrier, ears go flat back and he refused to let the second pass him.” The second should also go into the notebooks as she was last for most of the way under James King, before making rapid progress with three to jump It was her debut and she will have learnt plenty The earlier division was won by another debutant in Moonbow for the Josh Newman yard with Josh himself riding. A good-looking son of Spanish Moon, he was bought privately from Sean Doyle in Ireland. Josh’s partner Kayley clearly holds the gelding in high regard and although he is now up for sale, she would dearly like to keep him in the yard “He’s been so straightforward from day one and I just love him.”
The opening Conditions race looked quite competitive on paper and so it proved with a whole host of horses in with a chance with half a mile to run. Eventually it was the Flat-bred Enchanted Magic who took the spoils under Maryland Hunt Cup
winning rider, Charlie Marshall. A winner of a maiden hurdle in Ireland, he had then shown little in subsequent starts over there for both Willie Mullins and Colin McBratney. He looked like he could take a hand in the finish on his pointing debut at Milborne St Andrew only to fall at the last. A big imposing son of Dark Angel, he looks to have improved significantly on what he showed in the three starts after that and possibly the firmer ground might be more to his liking.
The Novice Riders race went to Stadmallen who had been unlucky last time at South Hill when crashing out through the wing of a fence under trainer/jockey Heidi Stevens. With Henry Moore taking the reins this time, Stadmallen kicked clear to record a 4 length success over favourite All Loved Up Twenty year old Henry rides out for Heidi (whom she has known since he was 14) as well as doing the schooling and also riding out for Les Jefford and Rod Millman. This was Stadmallen’s second win for Heidi who purchased him out of the Nigel TwistonDavies yard
The final two races were won by jockey Martin “Fly” McIntyre who took the Restricted on Rocky Creed for trainer Bea Coward and the Maiden Conditions on Born in the West for Jazmin Hosgood.
Rocky Creed looks a nice type and should progress further following his earlier 12 length romp at Lockinge Purchased by Mel Smith Bloodstock at Doncaster Sales after one run in Ireland, Bea explained “He’s such a genuine horse He probably found the shorter trip at Larkhill too quick for him then he wasn’t right when we took him back there. But he made amends at Lockinge and is a very exciting horse for the Barrow Racing Club!” Fly’s second winner came on the grey Born in the West who proved a character on the way to post, bucking him off However in the race, he was far more professional and beat Beat the Poli and Keepitfrombecky with something in hand. He had finished a fair second on debut at Cotley before finding the ground at Cothelstone too testing on Easter Monday. He will now head to the sales and looks a nice prospect.
SATURDAY 18TH MAY 2024
By Jake ExelbyThe decision to rebrand what used to be known as the Pembrokeshire fixture as the Welsh International point-to-point, opening the races to Irish horses and jockeys and offering £1,000 prize money – with £700 to the winner – for five of the seven races proved a resounding success for the organisers, led by Fixture Secretary Lucy Thomas and Sponsorship Manager Clare Morgan. Ten horses from five yards, along with three riders, made the short hop from Ireland on the ferry, to join British championship contenders Josh Newman (leading trainer) and Tim Vaughan (leading owner) and his son Ed (leading novice rider). A large crowd was present to ‘see’ the action, although a mist that rolled in before racing restricted visibility and – from the third race onwards, only the two fences in the home straight could be clearly seen from the viewing areas.
The raiding party had to content themselves with a single victory, which came courtesy of John Brennan’s Seymourjohn in the Mason Bros & The Cottesmore Farm & Fenton Home Farm Young Horse Maiden, in which six faced the starter The five-year-old, who had yet to complete but had shown promise before falling at the final fence last time out, was always prominent alongside favourite Joyeux Mome and the two soon came clear of the field before Seymourjohn and Toby McCain-Mitchell took the lead two out and was untroubled to score by six lengths, with another Irish runner – Bulletofexpression –running on for four lengths third.
“This has been the plan for the last few weeks, and we had a few pounds on at 9/2!” beamed a visibly delighted John afterwards. “We saw it advertised, they invited us over and I think it’s a great idea. They used to run a similar fixture at Kinsale.” The trainer, based at Enniscorthy in Wexford, has ten pointers, and said of Seymourjohn, “I bought him at Ascot as a weak three-year-old and he’s taken time Two-and-a-half miles is his trip and I think he can win a bumper He’s for sale and will go to Doncaster this week if I don’t sell him privately first.”
Asked how he came by the mount, Toby told me, “My friend Darren O’Dwyer, a bloodstock agent who used to be assistant to my uncle
Donald, rang me up and told me there was a ride for me here. I’d never met Mr Brennan before and his instructions were to ‘tip away upsides’ but no-one wanted to make the running, so I did. He’s a lovely horse, very professional. He settled well, his jumping was awesome, and he was only ever in third gear.” It was a ninth win of the campaign for the 21-year-old, who works for Nigel TwistonDavies but wouldn’t be drawn on whether he plans to turn conditional next season, saying only, “I’ll see how my diet’s going!”
Aside from the Irish contingent and the atmosphere they created, the day’s honours belonged to 16-year-old novice championelect Ed Vaughan, whose treble – taking him to 22 wins for the season (plus a walkover and two under rules) and surely cemented third place in the national riders title All his winners were owned by his father Tim and two were trained by him, including Siberian Star in the showpiece, the four-runner Cynthia Higgon Mixed Open Race. Always in the first three despite a mistake going out on the final circuit, the pair emerged from the gloom in the lead two out and came home five lengths and eight clear of Looksnowtlikebrian and Powerstown Park, with favourite Voodoo Doll returning home riderless after running out somewhere in the mist.
“He jumped better than at any time this season,” confirmed Tim. “While he didn’t have the form in the book to win this, his best form is on good ground, and he hasn’t had a busy year.” The successful owner-trainer, better
known nowadays for his exploits under rules added, “That’s 18 wins (plus a walkover) this season and I’m enjoying being back pointing – it’s where I started. This year’s been a bit of an experiment to get Ed going and to try to make rules horses from our pointers, and it’s been good fun. We’ll be back next season, but maybe not with the same numbers – it’s very expensive!”
Talking about his season’s feats, Ed admitted, “It’s been unbelievable to have so many winners and to be third to James King and Will Biddick. Dad’s been brilliant – so supportive – and I’ve had some good outside rides.”
The winning combination followed up in the Mr C Grisdale & Mr M George Conditions Race (Level 3), for which five were declared, on Tight Call, another one of the Vaughan string getting his head in front for the first time this season. Well-backed after a close second last time out, the ten-year-old was in front each time the horses were visible and – despite a howler at the last – won by an easy ten lengths from pointing debutant Frau Georgia, a great first ride for Katie Powell. Top Of The Charts was a length further back, with favourite Prime Pretender running no sort of race and pulling up with a circuit to go
“It’s easy, this racing game!” laughed Tim afterwards. “I’ve been running him on the wrong ground – he’s always wanted it good – but he ran a blinder last time and I thought
Maiden Race for 4-&-5-year-olds winner Seymourjohn and Toby McCain Mitchellhe was my strongest chance of the day. He’ll keep going to the end of the season.” Ed, explaining Tight Call’s blunder at the final fence, said, “He probably got a bit nervous as he’d had it easy up to then.”
Ed had initiated his treble on the John Mathias trained Getaway Cory, who prevailed by three lengths from Irish runner Peace
In The Park in the Mr W J Evans Hengoed Restricted, in which five ran. In the lead after a circuit, he remaining prominent despite being badly squeezed at the twelfth fence and – clear two out – foiled the efforts of the second. Blackfyre made late progress for six lengths third.
“It means a lot to have a winner here,” smiled John, the former leading rider who now trains a small string at St Florence, in South Pembrokeshire. “He’s a lovely honest horse We’ve had issues with a couple of our horses at home so Tim – who’s a good friend and who still owns Getaway Cory – said, ‘I’ve got one that would suit you’, and he came to me after his Ystradowen win. He’s enjoying the one-to-one attention I give him and working on the beaches at Manorbier and Tenby South.”
“After I got squeezed, my aim was to stay out of trouble,” confessed winning rider Ed “The two Irish horses tired coming down the hill, so I could nick a couple of lengths.”
Talking about Getaway Cory, he said, “We’ve persevered with him, and I think he can keep progressing. He started out in points for Kayley Woollacott and Josh Newman, and was a hurdler under rules, so this is quite different.”
The latter – bidding for a maiden champion trainers title – made the four-hour journey from his base at Woolminstone in Somerset with two runners, and was rewarded when Varinia, who he also rode, took the P Capstick Clearly Interiors Point-to-Point Flat Race, in which six started. Always in the first pair, the five-year-old mare hit the front coming up
the home straight and held on well to deny the Irish a second success, beating debutant Moulane A Chroi by half a length with longtime leader Caramelo Rapido sticking on well a further length and a half back, taking Josh to 25 wins for the season as a trainer, three clear of Alan Hill.
“It’s never been the aim, it’s just happened,” admitted Josh – who has also ridden 18 winners (plus a walkover) this year – of his trainers title aspirations. “I had six wins in a weekend in late March, but the championship bid only became realistic a couple of weeks ago We’ve got a full range of horses, from youngsters that we hope to sell, to progressive types, to experienced horses (like Sixteen Letters, who had won earlier in the day at Peper Harow). The older ones are running well, and we’ll decide on plans for the rest of the season over the next few days.” As for Varinia, “We bought her from Ireland, she ran well at Garthorpe last time and we lined her up for today. She’s for sale.”
Just two went to post in the opener, the Castlemorris Equestrian and Pets Members Race and it went the way of another in-form combination. Mini Fortune, who took the match by 12 lengths from Phoenix Rock, was winning her fifth race on the bounce, trainer Luke Price was scoring for the 14th time this season (he was at Peper Harow, where he later made it 15) and jockey Callum Pritchard – last year’s champion male novice and making it two wins from two rides for Luke – was moving on to 13 for the year, despite a campaign interrupted by weather and a whip suspension incurred at Aintree
In the trainer’s absence, I spoke to winning owner Nathan Pyne, who told me, “We came here because we’re close in the national leading horse championship (Mini Fortune is one behind Grace A Vous Enki) and we’ll let her tell us if she’ll run again. She’ll go next weekend if she’s full of beans but we’re not going to put her under any stress.” The mare hadn’t looked to be going well for much of the
contest and Nathan explained, “She wants a left-handed track, but she’s clever and she puts herself right when she sees a stride She had a serious co-pilot today – Callum’s class.”
The ‘serious co-pilot’ (usual jockey James King was at Peper Harow with the trainer) was bullish afterwards, saying, “Although everything was against her and she jumped violently left, she did everything I asked and I never felt she was beaten, as I knew she was the fitter of the two (Phoenix Rock hadn’t run for over two years).” The 22-year-old cited a Flete Park treble and riding for good owners and trainers as his season’s highlights and confirmed that he’ll turn conditional next year for his employers, Philip Hobbs and Johnson White.
The Well Drilling and Mr C Edwards Maiden attracted eight runners, the biggest field of the day, and went the way of Trendy Lady, who was bouncing back from a poor run last week having shown good form earlier in the year, including a sixth in the Dunraven Bowl. Mid-division early, the eight-year-old – one of three mares to win on the card – went second with a circuit to run and was in the lead two out, battling up the run-in to win by two lengths and one from market leaders Maska Du Morvan and favourite Emorelle
It was a first winner of the season for both jockey Carys Morris – enjoying a fifth career success and rushing off to weigh out for the next race so unable to talk after her victory – and trainer Clare Lloyd Davies, who said afterwards of Trendy Lady, “We got her from Henry de Bromhead for a small group of owners (The Trendy Lords & Ladies Club) and she’s been really consistent. She ran well at Chepstow and got boxed in last weekend – she didn’t like the big field.” Clare, who trains just inside the Welsh border near Hayon-Wye, “Has had one or two pointers for the last fifteen years or so”, and has trained seven winners overall, although this was her first since 2019
SUNDAY 19TH MAY 2024
By Russell SmithSEB Mead remembered the late Keagan Kirkby after claiming a poignant victory on Imperial Esprit at the Grafton Pointto-Point at Edgcote, near Banbury, before looking forward to a summer spell with Willie Mullins.
With a good-sized crowd basking in the spring sunshine on Sunday, Mead shone brightest aboard the Robert Varnhamtrained 10-year-old in the PPORA Club Members Conditions Race (Level 2), for Novice Riders Championship Final.
Previously Kirkby’s mount before the 25-year-old died while riding at Charing in February, Imperial Esprit struck the front at the fourth-last in the contest sponsored by Savills and PPORA, before storming up the hill to win by two-and-a-half lengths.
Runner-up Striking Out was subsequently disqualified after Bella Oliver failed to draw the correct weight with The Composeur and Jack Wilmot promoted to second.
Mead, 22, said: “It was a very classy performance. Full credit to Robert for still having him running well at the end of the season.”
And reflecting on the loss of his weighing room colleague, he added: “He is always in our thoughts. I knew him well from when he could come down into the south-east to ride.”
Mead is based with David Phelan at Brook, near Ashford in Kent, and his boss has fixed him up with a dream trip to Mullins’s all-conquering Closutton stables in County Carlow.
“It’s brilliant,” said the excited rider “I can’t wait. I would love to train in the future, so it is the place to go Hopefully, I will learn a thing or two.”
Varnham’s thoughts were also with Kirkby after his charge’s success “He did that for Keagan,” commented the trainer, who is based at Bramley, near Guildford. “He will be watching down on us. At the beginning of the season, we said we would go for this race.”
Kirkby’s grandad, Dave Young, was watching the live stream, and is a member of owners the Gunshot Paddocks Racing Club, along with Chris Knotek, Clive Penfold, Sally Marks, Alan Wilson and Andy Gallagher
With clerk of the course Graham Tawell and his team working wonders to produce Good ground, 50 runners faced the starter at the picturesque track nestled in the Northamptonshire countryside
Dawn Ball, who trains out of Paul Webber’s nearby Cropredy Lawn stables, celebrated her first double when Well P and Billy Two Rivers took the opening two races under Ellie Callwood.
The trainer had gone nine years without a winner before Well P scored at Mollington 13 days earlier, and the seven-year-old repeated the dose in the Grafton Hunt Members, Subscribers & Farmers Race.
The contest, sponsored by Heygates Country Foods, was open to horses entered for last month’s abandoned Bicester with Whaddon Chase Hunt meeting, and the move paid off with nine runners.
Callwood always had her mount in the firing line, before forging clear to pass the post 15 lengths ahead of Nasee and Ellie Miller with Fiftyfifty a length back in third.
Ball, who owns the gelding as part of the Paddy Pea Club, with her mother, Joyce Ball, James Stride and Mick and Harriet Curran said: “I think we have something special for next year With the Bicester being abandoned, I’m grateful that the Grafton have allowed us to join them.”
Things got even better for Ball and Callwood when Billy Two Rivers opened his account in great style in the Maiden Race, sponsored by a Gentleman.
Callwood tracked the front-running Whatchagotder before hitting the front at the third-last and her mount, owned by Ball’s partner, James Stride, powered clear to score by 16 lengths from Sean O’Connor’s mount.
“Wow, what can I say,” exclaimed the trainer “I think he is some machine He only turned five this month, but mentally he is so mature.”
Step Back and Lexi New (right, red and blue)The gelding came from Turlough O’Connor, and Ball added: “He couldn’t run on bottomless going in Ireland. I have had no winners for a long time and now I have had a double It is amazing - three winners in two weeks!”
The double took Callwood’s tally for the campaign to 10, beating her previous best, and she said: “He is a very smart young horse for the future. Moving yards to Kelly Morgan has given me a big helping hand. I started with Tom and Gina Ellis, and I owe a lot to them.”
Caryto Des Brosses bounced back to winning ways in a high-quality Mixed Open, sponsored by John White Funeral Directors.
Pulled up in the mud at Cheltenham last time, Thetford trainer David Kemp’s 12-year-old appreciated the sounder surface to make it a dozen wins between the flags plus two hunter chase successes.
Dale Peters maintained a strong gallop on the prolific winner to foil Golan Fortune’s bid for a four-timer by two-and-a-quarter lengths with Jetaway Joey 11 lengths back in third.
Kemp said his charge would probably not go to Stratford on May 31, reasoning: “He needs to run right-handed because he has some arthritic issues in the left side of his neck, and he is not so comfortable going left-handed.”
Owner John Ridge added: “I had it in the back of my mind that he would retire at 12 but after that performance I am not sure.”
And Peters said: “He has been a hero for my career He has been very unlucky not to win a good one.”
Step Back rolled back the years to take the PPORA Club Members Veteran Horse Conditions Race (Level 3) for Oxfordshire trainer Lily Bradstock and rider Lexie New.
Winner of the 2018 bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown, for whom he is now a Retraining of Racehorses Ambassador, the 14-yearold came clear up the straight to upset 1-3 favourite Benefaktor and Gina Andrews by eight lengths in the Framptons Planningsponsored contest.
With Letcombe Bassett handler Lily taking the veteran back to the lorry park, her mother, Sara, said: “He is teaching Lexie lots. He is having a lovely time, and his feet are too bad to do anything else Our farrier, Paul Logue, has done an incredible job of keeping him sound.”
She added that there were no plans to retire the gelding, who runs in the colours of the Cracker and Smodge Partnership, named after owner Jamie McCloud’s nicknames for his children.
New commented: “He is a very cool horse I feel very honoured to ride him. Up the hill I could feel them all around me and I knew he would keep going.”
Capparattin followed up his Mollington maiden win for Francesca Poste’s Ettington stables, near Stratford, with a game success in the Restricted Race, sponsored by Towcester Vets.
Charlie Case’s mount was challenged by Chabichou Dupoitou from the fourth-last, and the pair were locked together up the run-in, but Capparattin dug deep to fend off Izzie’s Marshall’s mount by a short head.
The Bumble Bee Racing Partnership, headed by Jane Burton and made up of her daughters, Lucy and Annabel, Trudy Gleed, Mark Styles and Mark Pugh, took over the nine-year-old’s ownership from the late John O’Neill.
Jane said: “He is gamer than I thought he was. He took it up from the front and every time they came to him, he said ‘No, no, no’. John would be so proud.”
Case added: “He jumps for fun. He only does what he has to and saves a bit for himself.”
Nick Wright’s first visit to Edgcote proved a memorable one although he had to endure an anxious wait before Mount Pleasant was confirmed the winner of the Owner-Trainer Conditions Race (Level 2) following a stewards’ enquiry
The seven-year-old hit the front going to the third-last in the NFU Mutual-sponsored contest under Alex Chadwick, before holding on by three-quarters of a length from the rallying Secret Cargo and Katie Featherstone
Wright, who is based at Chippenham, near Newmarket, said: “All the credit must go to Ali Warboys, who has done the training while I have been away Hopefully, he will go to Stratford for the Restricted. This is a beautiful course I have never been before.”
Brothers Harry and Oliver Vigors, from Aldbourne, near Marlborough, completed a family double in the two pony races, sponsored by Ben Case Racing, to be crowned the South Midlands Area Leading Riders.
Oliver, 12, triumphed in the 138cm and under contest aboard Little Anne, before Harry, 14, took the honours on Obi 1 Knobi in the 148cm and under race
SUNDAY 19TH MAY 2024
By Granville TaylorAnge des Malberaux may have been the oldest horse in the three runner Brends Hotel sponsored Mixed Open run over four miles one furlong, but the Heidi Stevens trained 14-year-old outsider of the trio seemed to relish the fast ground to score unchallenged from Joey Steel after odds-on favourite Minella Jab had failed to sparkle
It was the winner’s second run of the season following a hunter chase outing at Cheltenham last month. The veteran ex-chaser is owned by Brayford vet Brian McCreesh, and was ridden by his wife who rides under her maiden name Heidi Stevens. “Nobody was keen to make it and I couldn’t hold him, but he found it so easy. He got injured at Trebudannon last April so has had a lay off until recently,” reported Heidi.
The Dean Summersby yard continued their successful winning spree with a double, on the heels of a recent Upcott Cross fourtimer Russian Invasion (Darren Edwards) was defyinga5lbspenaltyforhisParhamwinwhen taking the James Pryce Tractors Restricted with a hard fought success over Boys Will Be Boys (George Hiscock) and Alkademon (Henry Moore). The scene in the unsaddling area however featured the runner up’s rider
George Hiscock. The popular Dorset based 32-year-old, with 30 career winners in the saddle, announced his retirement from the saddle only for his weighing room colleagues to drench him with buckets of water. Maybe the “cold shower” was welcome on a warm afternoon.
Dorrells Pierji completed the Summersby/ Edwards double in the PPORA Conditions race for eight-year-olds and over. The French bred 11-year-old recorded a very fast official time (5 mins 39 secs) in beating course winner Skilful Lord (Will Biddick) and the favourite Captain MC (James King). Dorrells Pierji, who has wins on his CV for Willie Mullins and Dan Skelton in his younger days, has taken time to find his form after joining his current yard this season. “He has had loads of issues to sort out but living out in the field has helped. The hood has made a big difference as well, plus the better ground. He did it so easy today”, said the Lifton based trainer who now has the lead for one of the National trainers’ titles.
Anna Johnston is also in the running for a National title She put herself level with Natasha Cookson for the Novice Ladies’ award with a smooth success on Walkin Out in the PJ Hobbs and NFU Mutual Conditions race This shrewdly placed mare was winning her third successive Conditions race in the space of three weeks. “She travelled well and I was able to take a good lead,” reported the rider The mare, in the colours of John Dorse,
was achieving a landmark century of winners to be sent out by trainer Leslie Jefford. She may head for a Newton Abbot hunter chase next.
The closest finish of the day came in the South Molton Transport Maiden when sevenyear-old mare Share A Moment just edged out Cockspur Balla by a short head to put jockey Martin (Fly) McIntyre into double figures for the season. The Irish born jockey had reached a career total of 100 point-topoint winners last month. Share A Moment had shown very little in Ireland for her previous trainer Michael Hourigan. She is now owned and trained by farrier Ryan Chapman at St Mawgan, Cornwall who said. “I bought her privately after she was led out unsold at Doncaster sales. The two and a half miles was too sharp at Flete (where she was behind two subsequent winners) and we were waiting for better ground. We train her on the beach at Mawgan Porth.”
David Pipe’s Moodofthemoment had dead heated at the Axe Vale last month when giving 19-year-old Luke Morris his first winner The pair followed up with an outright success here to land odds of 4-7 at the expense of Grove Ash (Shannon Holmes) in the Totnes & Bridgetown Races Company Conditions event. The winner was hanging left up the finishing hill before a relieved rider was able to celebrate with a victory salute passing the post.

By Rory AlkinThe large crowd was treated to some good racing in glorious sunshine Bradley Gibbs recorded a training double, while jockeys Huw Edwards and Tommie O’Brien each rode a double
Gibbs was absent on the day, due to his partner Claire Sherriff having an accident earlier that morning. The first leg of the double came courtesy of Tommie O’Brien on Premier Fantasy in the Restricted who got the better of a great duel with John Dawson on Surprise Attack in the straight, winning by a neck. The five-year-old gelding had previously won a Maiden at Kimble and looks a useful prospect.
Gibbs double came in the concluding threemile Maiden where Freddie Mitchell had no
trouble in beating Huw Edwards on Sabre Rattling by five lengths. The eight-year gelding, owned by Timothy Talbot has taken time to mature having been in training with Donald McCain previously and running well in a Bangor Novice Hurdle just over a year ago
The second leg of O’Brien’s riding double was aboard Buzzard Trix in the featured Lord Daresbury Race where the combination led throughout from Huw Edwards on The Creadan Rogue and won easily by fifteen lengths. The Deborah Walton owned winner is trained by Heidi Brookshaw and clearly likes the track as he won a Conditions Race at the corresponding meeting last season.
Edwards rode a double courtesy of Willewonga in the Mixed Open and Eeze a Saint in the Small Keepers Race. In the Mixed Open, Fred Phillipson-Stow on the Cheltenham Hunter Chase Winner A Jet of Our Own, set out to make all but was passed by Edwards on Willewonga after three out
who then ran on gamely to win by a length and a half The winner, trained by Hannah Roach, was having his first win for eighteen months and was suited by the better ground here and the two-and-a-half-mile trip
Archie Loweth on the odds-on favourite Pym led in the Small Keepers Race but had no answer to Edwards on Eeze a Saint who took it up at the 15th and won by five lengths. The winner was bought privately by Jane Wanless from David Futter and is trained by her husband Martin. The ten-year-old winner had previously won his Maiden here five years ago, when trained by Josh Guerriero.
In the opening Maiden for four- and fiveyear-olds over two-and-a-half miles, Jack Teal on Boots Folly took it up three out from Guy Sankey on Chief Hopper and ran on well to beat John Dawson on Vadaverro by five lengths. The five-year-old home-bred winner is trained by Teal for Peter Maddison from Skewsby.
The presentation of the Lord Daresbury cup to the connections of Buzzard TrixThe Northern Area Point-to-Point season ended on a high at Hexham last Saturday with 55 runners on the Haydon’s seven race card enjoyed by a bumper crowd in the sunshine
Local trainers Charlotte Tailford and David Parker had plenty to celebrate after sending out Famous Response and Shantou’s Temple to land the opening two contests.
First-time cheekpieces worked the oracle with Famous Response who seemed to relish the soft ground and true test of stamina on his eighth start of the campaign in the WMH Quality Catering Conditions Race. Never far off the pace, the ten-yearold was produced by Tailford to dispute the lead at the last with Not The Chablis before finding plenty when the chips were down on the long run-in to see off odds-on favourite Eagle Rock’s late challenge by a head. Ask Cory (Chloe McHattie) finished an honourable 4th on his final start before

By Peter Burgonretirement, beaten under four lengths, under top weight of 12st10lb
Almost 17 years to the day since his dam Temple Green got off the mark at Hexham, Shantou’s Temple did likewise in the High Plains Maiden Race despite losing both hind shoes during the contest. Always going well under Joe Wright, he went on three out and quickly settled the issue before coasting home twenty lengths ahead of So Be It (Dominic Hislop).
Malton-based owner/trainer/rider Jack Teal enhanced his impressive strike rate in recent weeks with victory on Wotnowcato in the 2m4f Jacksons of Hexham Maiden Race. Sent on after two out, the youngster kept on well to beat Hollywood Harmon (Pippa Brown) by three lengths and Teal is confident he will be even better next season on a sounder surface. The winner was bought for £7,000 at the Goffs UK Doncaster Store Sale in May 2022 and might well have won on debut
at Brocklesby Park earlier in the season had he not fallen at the last. Teal took his seasonal tally to 12 when scoring on Boots Folly at Tabley on Sunday.
Dropped in trip and carrying at least 15lb less than he had done when scoring three times in Men’s Open company earlier this term, Buster Valentine provided 17-yearold Eleanor Clark with a memorable first winner on only her second ride between the flags in the 2m4f Graham Reader Motor Engineer Ladies Open Race. Will Milburn’s charge stayed on strongly in the closing stages to beat Humps And Bumps (Jemima Stewart) by twelve lengths. An ecstatic Clark, currently doing an apprenticeship at Askham Bryan College, commented: “He tanked me round’’, while this was a 20th winner from 38 runners between the flags since February 2019 for Sheriff Hutton-based handler Will Milburn.
Envious Editor’s belated seasonal debut in the JS Hubbuck Ltd Maling Trophy Mixed
Open Race was a winning one in the hands of Bristol University final year student Henry Crow Confidently ridden, the tenyear-old tracked the leaders on the final circuit before surging to the front at the last and went on to score by a comfortable five lengths from Warwickshire raider Dundrum Wood Martha Reeve)
This was a first winner for Shropshire trainer Caroline Crow who had been in two minds whether to run her stable star on the soft ground after making the 4-hour journey from Hadnall. His next outing is likely to be at the Stratford Hunters’ Chase meeting on May 31.
After finally overhauling long-time leader Bestfriend Barnaby (Guy Sankey) two out, Thomas Easterby’s mount Lou Marvelous sprinted clear on the run-in to take the Insync Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic Restricted Race in great style by twelve lengths and this talented 7-year-old Masked Marvel gelding looks one to follow next season.
Former 148-rated chaser Canelo rolled back the years with a first win since December
2020 in the Lycetts Conditions Race. Given a peach of a ride by Natasha Cookson, he took it up three out and stayed on strongly to beat ex-chaser Raecius Felix (Cerys Murray) by eight lengths. This was a first training success for Great Smeaton-based Thomas Fife who bought the evergreen eleven-year-old privately seven weeks ago out of Ben Haslam’s Middleham yard Cookson is now joint leader with Anna Johnston in the National Novice Riders Ladies Championship
As usual, the main action was preceded by two pony races sponsored by DJ & SJ Recycling. Last month’s Corbridge scorer Greenbarrow Goldsmith (Hugo Murray) followed up in the 138cm Open contest from Silver (Freya Ainslie) and Africa (Harley Blackwood), with the winner having made the 380-mile round trip from Whitchurch while the third was the day’s longest traveller having made the marathon 630-mile round trip from Wickford, Essex.
Judge Fox secured his 10th win in the last two seasons under Kaden Beasley in the 148cm Open contest, with the minor
placings filled by I’m Making It (Cara Tuke) and Dino Royale (Robyn Coulson).
For the record, this season’s 8 Northern Area fixtures had a total of 396 runners with a healthy average of 7.61 per race, while the ratio of runners to individual horses entered was one of the highest in the country at 77.04%.
Nick Orpwood won the Hexham Auction Mart Company Ltd-sponsored Men’s Jockeys Championship, Amy Coltherd won the Perth Racecourse-sponsored Ladies title, while Eloise Justice-Vose won the NPPA Novice Riders title in her first season.
The George F. White Champion Horse Award went to Oscar Wilde, while Eagles Rock won the Novice Horse equivalent and She Is The Enemy was the leading mare. Appropriately, the Buccleuch Arms, St Boswells-sponsored leading hunts awards were won by the Duke of Buccleuch’s (36pts), with the minor placings filled by Morpeth (27pts) and Jedforest (26pts).
