ON THE CLOCK
Races on over Aintree’s national course are invariably truly run and last Thursday’s renewal was no exception with It’s On the Line (136) replicating his Cheltenham figure to the pound. This season’s pecking order amongst the top hunter chase performers now has a sound look to it and, unless rapidly drying ground takes a hand there are likely to be few shocks in the remaining feature events at Cheltenham and Stratford.
We are accustomed to seeing the majority of speed figures at a meeting being closely aligned to the overall form level of each race, so it was unusual to see several of the winners at the Bedale clock figures on average some 7lbs in advance. From a form perspective its quite understandable that a cautionary approach to their handicapping may have been taken as there were several shocks on the day including defeats for the normally prolific Mount Mews and Camdonian, but re-examination of the time calculations confirm the validity of the speed figures and therefore one can mark up the performances of Slanelough (110), Glenmount ((108) and Perfect Attitude (112) Glenmount is of particular interest. He remains progressive and will be an interesting contender if routed to the Cheltenham Intermediate final.
There was a captivating duel between Law of Gold (102) and Fier Jaguen (102) at High Easter with victory going to the former, in receipt of 2 lbs. Although under some restraint, Fier Jaguen appeared to have set a sound pace throughout the contest so it was somewhat surprising that the final time was unremarkable for a race of this class. Both horses should go well in a couple of weeks’ time where Fier Jaguen will benefit from a drop in trip His jumping remains a little concerning as he is inclined to being a little too enthusiastic at times – but Bradley Gibbs knows him well and although diving at a couple of fences here, the combination never looked like falling.
Remarkably it was the maidens who clocked the fastest figures of the day with DriveonDonn (108) just getting better of Bumpy Evans (112) on the run to the line It’s difficult to reconcile these figures with their previous performances and the fact that this was the day’s largest field may have played a part in guaranteeing a strongly run event, however DriveonDonn looks capable of winning again whilst compensation duly awaits the gallant runner-up .
At Cotley, Mr Bezi (IRE) (108) took the shorter maiden in a five seconds faster time than Macklin’s win in Men’s Open. Mr Bezi had shown only a modicum of ability in Irish points and bumpers before this, however on each of these occasions he had been held up in the rear and a change of tactics here clearly worked the oracle A tall, scopey sort, he looks primed for further success
Later, on what proved a marathon card, Myfanwy (91) ran out a decisive winner of division 2 of the longer maiden race Readers may remember her dam, Lady Myfanwy who, despite often being found chasing the tail of the flying Chesnut Annie, was a talented performer in her own right who finished her career with a tally of 30 pointing and 5 Hunter Chase victories. Myfanwy has some way to go to match that record of course, but was not unbacked beforehand, and can progress.

POINTING PEOPLE: HUGH LILLINGSTON
19-year-old Hugh Lillingston made the perfect start to his riding career when scoring on his mare All Loved Up at Larkhill last month. Many readers will recognise his surname – Hugh is the son of Luke, who runs the Mount Coote Stud in Limerick and grandson of Alan, who won the 1963 Champion Hurdle on the one-eyed Winning Fair, the first amateur to win the storied race Jake Exelby caught up with Hugh recently to find out what the youngster is doing in British pointing, his background, and plans for the future.
Tell me about yourself and your background in racing
I was brought up at Mount Coote in Kilmallock. My family’s always been involved in breeding – predominantly flat, though we have the odd jumping mare. I went to school at home until I was 13, when I went to Eton. I finished last summer
I grew up in the Scarteen Hunt Pony Club – I’d hunt eight days a week if I could! My Mum, Tabitha, who was a reserve for the British Olympic eventing team, is District Commissioner for the club I also evented, show jumped, and hunter trialled. When I was 16, I started going to Enda Bolger’s in the holidays to ride out. I learnt a lot there.
Another influence is John Kiely My family’s had our homebreds with him most of my life. The first, and also the first racehorse I sat on, was Toe The Line – she was a great mare, winning the (€90,000) Petingo Handicap at Leopardstown and two listed races, and placing in the Park Hill Stakes and Ebor We sadly lost her at Cheltenham.
She got me into racing, and I got to know John and his wife Marion. They’ve always been great to me and given me advice. Her full brother Line Out, who won the Irish Cesarewitch, was supposed to be my first ride, but she has two half-brothers in training with John, both by Hillstar, who I hope to ride in bumpers in the coming months.
What about pointing?
One of the first foals of the dam – Bluebell Line – was a pointer called Always Improving, trained and ridden by James Butler, Mount Coote’s head lad. I always went to the pointto-points to cheer him on.
What made you come over to England this season?
I always had a gap year planned. I finished school on July 1st and started an internship at Tattersalls Newmarket on the 2nd! I worked there until Christmas and really enjoyed it – preparing for the sales and
BY JAKE EXELBY
putting catalogues together I learnt more about the industry in six months than I had done in the rest of my life and also got an insight into the jumps side from Tattersalls Cheltenham.
After that, I went to work for Nicky Henderson at Seven Barrows as a stable lad, riding out three lots as well as my own mare.
Hugh winning on All Loved Up at Larkhill Photo: Tim Holt
Immortal Verse going through the ring at Newmarket
How did you come by All Loved Up?
She was in training with Liam Lennon and J D Moore sourced her for us, as I was keen to have a pointer while I was over here, to have a few rides and a bit of fun. We bought her in early January
At Larkhill, we weren’t expecting much, other than a clear round and to learn about each other I didn’t realise how rare it was for a maiden to win a Novice Riders race She didn’t win for Liam, but he campaigned her quite competitively She’s no superstar, but a safe enough ride, and better than her form read. There was a Mares Maiden on the card, but it was over 2m4f, and we thought the longer trip would suit better
What made you send her to OIive Nicholls?
Olive’s very local to Seven Barrows and has had success as a trainer already – she had a 100% success rate when All Loved Up arrived and was all over me about maintaining her strike rate! She knows what she’s doing.
You’re actually older than your trainer
Yes, by nine months. But she certainly doesn’t act like she’s younger than me She’s very knowledgeable and certainly not inexperienced, with her background.
What are your plans for the rest of the season and when your gap year is over?
All Loved Up will run again in a couple of weeks and maybe have 1-2 more runs. After that, my next step is to work for a riding
safari in the Masai Mara in Kenya. I’m not sure what the pointing’s like down there! I’m going to Oxford Brookes University in September and hope to ride out for Olive again next season and maybe go back to Seven Barrows – the team there is young and fun.
Ultimately, I’ll end up back at Mount Coote and be involved in breeding –Dad’s a bloodstock agent after all and that’s my long-term aim. But it’s such a broad industry that I wouldn’t say not to anything. My grandad trained pointers and we have training facilities at home, so I’d like to have a go at that.
Tell me a bit about your father?
Dad’s been great. He tells me I make his job easy as I’ve shown an interest in racing since day one I’ve obviously got plenty still to learn from him. He’s a great resource to have close and it would be a shame if I didn’t mug him by asking him questions every day! He was at Larkhill (to see Hugh win) although that was only because my sister was over playing in the Rosslyn Park Rugby Sevens!
I suppose he’s best-known for consigning Immortal Verse, who made 4,700,000 guineas at Newmarket in 2013, a European record price for a mare.
And your grandfather?
He died ten years ago so my memories are less personal and more the legacy of what he’s done for our family He came from Leicestershire, but his parents were based in Ireland during the hunting season. He was orphaned as a teenager – Mount Coote was a cattle farm at the time He rode his first winner aged 13 at Tralee and was leading amateur the year he won the Champion Hurdle A year later, he suffered a spinal injury and the doctor said he’d never race-ride again, so he replied, ‘That’s alright – I’ll go eventing.’ He got on the Irish Olympic team in 1968 but his horse was injured, then he won a European Championship gold medal in 1979

What differences have you noticed between British and Irish pointing?
In Britain, it seems much more of a social event, which I think is brilliant.
The one thing I’d improve is that the Irish are furtheraheadinsourcingstoresforyounghorse maidens. However, when British 4yo maiden winners start winning at the Cheltenham Festival, things will change It’s noticeable that, when you listen to Cheltenham previews, consignors like Donnacha Doyle, Colin Bowe and Warren Ewing get namedropped as much as the rules trainers.
What would you do if you weren’t involved with horses?
Immediately, I’d be very unhappy! Like my sister, I play rugby. I’m a flanker, was in the first XV at school and played for Newmarket when I was at Tattersalls – we got promoted this season. It would be a dream to play professional rugby but maybe I’d go down a sports journalism route.
Who would be your dream dinner party guests?
Sir Mark Prescott. He’s got a wealth of knowledge going back years, is a fantastic raconteur and would be great value
Vincent O’Brien. A great trainer who was significant in Irish breeding for sourcing horses from America. I’d love to ask about his thinking behind that.
Harold Kirk, who’s Wille Mullins’ bloodstock agent. I’d love to hear his stories about different horses coming from different places as he uses a number of paths, not just one or two contacts.
Finally, Barney Curley and John McCririck. Well, you couldn’t have one without the other!

THE PUCKERIDGE AND ESSEX HUNTS
SATURDAY 13TH APRIL 2024
By Mike Ashby
There was plenty of entertainment, throughout the afternoon, for the attendees at High Easter racecourse for the Puckeridge and Essex fixture. Both the point-to-point racing and the Grand National from Aintree were relayed on a large screen, in front of the main enclosure.
Most of the bumper crowd were assembled in sight of the big screen which enabled them to keep up with the point-to-point action especially with the runners over the far-side of the course However, they were privileged to enjoy the benefit of several thrilling finishes, which unfolded directly in front of them, over the closing stages of most of the races.
The Ladies Open was contested for the Warwick Vase and looked on paper a really competitive affair and so it proved with the three market leaders, No Hassle Hoff, Shentri and Tullys Touch always handy in a tightly packed field with Golden Poet, initially, leading the way and the favourite Tullys Touch, being held up at the rear Approaching five out Shentri and No Hassle Hoff started to make their forward moves with Tullys Touch also making ground from the back. Two fences out Kate Gowing had manoeuvred No Hassle Hoff into the lead but the whole complexion of the race changed approaching the last where Ellie Holder had made significant ground on the favourite, and with a perfectly-timed challenge swept past their two market rivals to take the prize by 4 lengths. Tullys Touch has now won 13 races for owner Christina Blockley who unfortunately had traffic issues on the way to the course but pleasingly arrived just in time to receive the prestigious Vase trophy. Christina’s late arrival meant she missed her 11-y-o’s excellent performance but her trainers John and Mel Ibbott would have been happy to relate all the details of how the race unfolded.
Izzie Marshall on Urban Grit produced another exceptional, almost identical, display of raceriding to take the Intermediate race Trevada went off favourite with Zak Baker and they led the others with Burtown being reined back by Darren Andrews and Urban Grit plotting a wider course Three out, Trevada was still in command and although Urban Grit was carrying 5lb more than his rivals, Izzie was confident of her partner’s ability to quicken when asked but it meant delivering her

challenge at the precise time jumping the last which she performed with outstanding ability At the finish the winners were 1½ lengths clear of Trevada with Burtown a further length away and assistant trainer Joe Hill was equally pleased with Urban Grit’s victory as hw was to see his fiancée extend her lead in the Ladies championship title
We were treated to another thriller in the Mens Open which basically became a ‘match’ race from the off, between Fier Jaguen and Law Of Gold with the other declared runner, the game mare Jonjoela, not able to go the pace of her rivals. Fier Jaguen’s record of 9 wins from 14 points plus a hunter ‘chase victory and Law Of Gold’s tally of 8 wins from 15 pointing outings and another 5 successes in hunter ‘chases ensured that this was going to be a race full of class. Bradley Gibbs sent Fier Jaguen into the lead as expected, but was slightly jumping out to his right, with his main rival always a comfortable 2-3 lengths behind. This tactical positioning never altered until the last fence when Dale Peters conjured a perfect leap from the David Kemp-trained Law Of Gold and quickened away, impressively, from the obstacle to win by 1½ lengths.
After the race Peters, who was riding his 14th winner of the season, appeared to be wincing somewhat, as he returned to weighin, possibly as a result of a tumble suffered in the second race on the card, the RoR Veteran Horse contest. His mount The Unmentionable, was brought down after Dragon D’Estruval came down on the bend, before turning for the second last. The incident might have been a case of clipped heels with several horses abreast coming around the bend. Alex Chadwick, who was partnered with Dragon D’Estruval was considerably shaken by the fall and the medical staff deemed it necessary for him to attend hospital as a precaution. In the race itself Cobra De Mai and Chloe East made virtually all the running to take the winning prize, with a powerful round of
jumping bowling along on ground, that Chloe and her owner/trainer father Ricky, have been longing for all season. This was Miss East’s first winner of the season and her third in total, all achieved on the 12-y-o Cobra De Mai. Although Ricky East is the named trainer he was quick to point out, post-race, that his daughter is totally involved with all of Cobra De Mai’s work at home
There was an unfortunate start to the day’s racing when the first race had to be curtailed, after a circuit and a half, due to an injured horse on the course The later Maiden contest went to Driveondonn and Charlie Buckle Boasting the biggest field of the day, Bumpy Evans representing Tim and Edward Vaughan, raced into a clear lead, after a slow start, which they maintained through the first circuit and were still 6 lengths to the good, jumping four out. Their lead began to shorten as Driveondonn and Buckle made substantial progress round the final bend and on the approach the last, to collar the front-running Bumpy Evans and storm past their rallying rival to win by a length. Buckle and trainer Rob Cundy were celebrating their second winner of the season and Driveondonn was building on a decent showing at the previous meeting at High Easter, last month.
The final race on the card was always likely to involve only two runners and it was Nigel Padfield’s Padjoes Legacy who put his name to the trophy to follow the many previous successes that Padfield has achieved over the years, in this race Zak Baker made all the running on the winner who was conceding 11lb to his rival, the mare Main Stage, who with Ellie Holder taking the ride, could never quite get to the Padjoes Legacy with the winning margin being 2½ lengths.
Another cracking day’s racing, full of tense, close finishes to thrill the crowd whose combined, cheering voices were in good competition with the funfair volume!

THE SEAVINGTON HUNT
SUNDAY 14TH APRIL 2024
By Kirsty Boutflower
A bumper entry plus a dry day ensured that the decent sized crowd that attended the Seavington Point to Point on Sunday had an enjoyable day out with some excellent racing on offer The organisers would like to thank all participants for their help in keeping the meeting on time during the day.
Highlights from the afternoon’s nine race card were a first winner for jockey Conal Kavanagh, training doubles for Luke Price and Josh Newman who also rode his pair plus another win for the high class Macklin, trained and ridden by Will Biddick.
Conal Kavanagh had to wait until the last race to record his first ever winner when he took the Novice Riders race on Moodofthemoment for his boss David Pipe Hitting the front coming down the final hill, Conal held off a challenge from Rupert Wilks on Beyond Redemption to record a 5 length victory
Although David is officially the trainer, his representative Gerry Supple explained that Conal and Luke Morris (who had earlier been second on their other horse, Castle Daragh) shared the work between them and stressed how much support David gave to the two young jockeys by providing two horses for them to get their riding careers going.
The riding career of Will Biddick needs no introduction and his training career is fast catching up as he showed when he steered the classy Macklin to a cosy half-length success over a persistent Ninth Wave in the shortened Men’s Open. Shouldering a 5lb penalty Macklin was always travelling better than the runner-up and the pair finished over twenty lengths clear of the useful Dr Rhythm in third. Will explained afterwards, “He isn’t the biggest horse so it’s as much as he realistically should carry.” He added that he would discuss plans with owner John Studd who was here to greet his winner, and there was a possibility that Macklin would now go to Cheltenham for the Hunter Chase evening in early May.
Another who was eyeing the May meeting as a target was Tom Ellis, fresh from saddling stable star, Latenightpass who ran with huge credit in the Grand National. Wife Gina who has now taken charge of the pointing side of the operation, comfortably took the Ladies Open on Master Templar Back in the winner’s enclosure,
Gina said to owners Jenny and Richard Hayward afterwards, “He was really enthusiastic the whole way and jumped brilliantly.” Originally bought privately out of Olly Murphy’s yard, this was his tenth win for them and he would now be aimed at the four miler hunter chase at Cheltenham as staying was his forte.
The Welsh trainers in particular, Luke Price, often target this course and with the wet weather decimating their meetings, Luke notched a double courtesy of Mr Bezi in the Maiden Conditions and Joyzain in the first division of the Restricted with James King on board both. James brought Mr Bezi home an easy 12 length winner after putting in a copy-book round of jumping although he did admit that he thought a flatter track would suit him better still. James had actually sourced the horse for the Prices having spotted him in Ireland and bought him privately from Phil Donovan. Still a bit immature physically, he could run up a sequence. Luke’s second winner, Joyzain was given a similarly confident ride by James when he cruised to a 7 length victory over Castle Daragh. Bought very cheaply from Doncaster Sales, he too should be kept on the right side of
Another Welsh trainer to enjoy success was Arron Jones whose Myfanwy took the second division of the Maiden. A daughter of the hugely prolific Lady Myfanwy herself a winner of 30 points and 5 hunter chases, Myfanwy showed she has inherited her mother’s tenacity when holding off City Silk and Ahanaglogh to record her first win. Arron trains alongside his brother in Rhonda as well as working as a farrier and said “if she’s as half as good as her mother, we will have some fun!” The earlier division of the maiden showed why the downhill fences at
for the Conditions
Cotley deserve respect when they claimed several fancied horses on the final circuit with Bruce Grobbler falling three out, bringing down Pyleigh Lord while strong favourite Crackerjack Queen who had jumped herself into the lead only to fall at the next leaving Southfield Scope clear He however propped at the last unseating his rider and it was left to Heidi Stevens to capitalise on her good fortune to forge clear on Navegaon Gate who she also trains for the Mccreesh Racing Club Surely the best bred horse on the pointing circuit, his breeders probably didn’t envisage his first win being in a point to point being a son of Frankel, out of a halfsister to St Nicholas Abbey but this big 6 year old gelding made his jumping count when it mattered and this success was well-deserved.
Josh Newman has his horses in great form and his consistent Sixteen Letters also proved that a good round of jumping is needed on this course after his nearest pursuer, Scoresby came down when trying to mount a challenge at the last. The John Symes owned Sixteen Letters in now unbeaten in four visits here and clearly relishes the place which enables his breathing abnormality to hinder him less. Josh explained “I knew I had the other horse covered even before he came down, as he was going so well,” while partner Kayley said “he’s just a remarkable horse considering he has this condition but then again he’s never known any different. He could have been some horse if he’d had normal breathing system.” Josh and Kayley’s second winner came when Irlandais built on a promising win at Cothelstone to take the second division of the Restricted from Spear Dancer who also ran with promise A disappointing spell under Rules had prompted them to try and rejuvenate Irlandais with some easier contests pointing and this was a nice performance.
