Nick Wilson reviews Friday and Saturday’s action.
The rains continue to cause havoc with the race programme but paradoxically the two remaining Easter weekend fixtures were bathed in warm spring sunshine and substantial crowds gathered to watch some competitive action.
A distance of three and a half miles may have been an experimental one for Higham but that experiment can now be considered a success with three promising sorts fighting out what must rank as one of the finishes of the season.
The Kemp yard has always held a strong hand when it comes to staying types and his Back it Up (114) stepped up markedly on his previous form to take this Conditions Level 3 event by a short head from Go Go Geronimo (116) with All is True (112) a close third We can only guesstimate a standard time for this new distance but the presence of the front running Go Go Geronimo (sent off 4/6 favourite) was always going to guarantee a sound pace, and with the three protagonists finishing a distance clear of their other rivals, the projected figures appear solid.
David Kemp looks sure to be well represented at the end of season Stratford evening meeting with both All the Ammunition and Back it Up now in the frame for the John Corbett. All is True ran much better than on his previous start (probably preferring the better surface) and indeed looked the likely winner two out before stamina limitations kicked in. He remains one to follow.
The booking of Dale Peters for Shanes Passion (98) took the eye, and those supporters who took heed were rewarded at good odds – his mount making all the running to land the concluding maiden The Pennock yard has had a good season, and Shanes Passion looks perfectly capable of landing them another small race before the season is out.
Life Me Up (IRE) (108) gave the Horners a welcome fillip when taking the scalp of Caryto des Brosses (104) in the two and a half mile Open at Kimble The early pace was strong with Caryto des Brosses unable to take up his customary front running role and the eventual winner needing a couple of reminders from Jack Andrews to remain in touch. At the business end however Lift Me Up was well in control and ran out an impressive 6 lengths winner He appeals as having a decent chance in one of Cheltenham’s shorter distance Hunter Chases.

The Essex and Suffolk meeting at Higham annually attracts a colossal attendance and with the overflow car parks being utilised from an early stage, another huge gathering took place at the popular course on the border of the two counties.
The course was again in superb condition for this second and final fixture of the Higham season and had benefitted from the ideal amounts of rain together with the timing of when it had fallen, leading up to the meeting.
Winning celebrations are always part of the day’s racing and there were two special occasions to relate after an enthralling day’s racing. Izzie Marshall recorded her 100th winner of her career and her 93rd in points when giving I K Brunel an exceptional ride to take the Mixed Open race having taken control of proceedings from two fences out. The pairing stayed on strongly to register a 4 length victory over last year’s winner of the race, Peacocks Secret, with previous course winner Slievegar back in 3rd place. After her success, Izzie was pleased to acknowledge all the owners and Alan, Lawney and Joe Hill who had supported her from the start and during her riding career which began in December 2015 at Wadebridge with her first points winner coming on Conkies Lad at Penshurst in March 2016 and her first victory for the Hill’s on Supreme Danehill, back at Wadebridge in December 2016.
Andrew and Ruth Pennock train their horses at Timworth, adjacent to the Ampton course and over the years have enjoyed many successes at Higham. None would have pleased them more than Shanes Passion convincing victory in the closing Maiden contest. The Pennock’s are a true family outfit with son Henry, celebrating becoming a teenager on the day, proudly leading their triumphant horse round the winners’ enclosure and the family connection didn’t end there as Ruth’s parents are involved as part of the shared ownership of Shanes Passion. In the race itself, all eight Maiden contestants were jumping impeccably for the first circuit with Vango Vick and the eventual winner leading the way but these two frontrunners together with the favourite, Bless The Moon and Just A Mystery began to pull clear of their rivals at the cross fence, four out. From here Shanes Passion took full command of the
A
race and ran out a 4½ length victor over Vango Vick. Dale Peters took the winning ride and this was his first success for the Pennock stable, after several near misses over the years and after the trophy presentation, expressed the race had “gone to plan”.
The Pennock team just missed out in the opening Members’ race after their representative Ask Carla, partnered by Paddy Barlow, had led for most of the contestuntilchallengedbyGoodSourcewhodrew alongside two out and “smoothly quickened and put the race to bed” according to winning jockey Jack Andrews. On reflection, Good Source was entitled to go one better after coming up against the impressive, Knight In Dubai at Horseheath in mid-February but nevertheless Ask Carla had run extremely well in the circumstances, going down by just 4 lengths, especially as he returned to the horsebox area “very sore” according to his trainer and after an initial examination by the vet, the nature of the issue was unable to be established, at the time
Back It Up returned to winning ways in the 3½ mile Conditions race, to record his second course victory for owner John Ridge and trainer David Kemp Covered up by jockey Alex Chadwick for most of this inaugural race over an extended distance around Higham, leaving Sir Shelby and Go Go Geronimo to head the field of 8 runners, for a large part of the race
At the business end of the contest, the three market leaders, Go Go Geronimo, All Is True and Back It Up and were locked together approaching two out and at the last, which all three jumped without error In a tense finish, the latter prevailed by a short head from the oddson favourite Go Go Geronimo with All Is True a further 1¾ lengths adrift. The runner-up finished distressed but pleasingly, after being doused with several buckets of water was considered recovered, whilst the winner could be aimed at the Intermediate Final at Cheltenham but needs qualification before that becomes a reality
Ellie Callwood adopted different tactics, on Precious Bounty, to the normal front-running ones normally employed, in the PPORA Mixed Open for Grass Roots Riders, a race for riders who had not ridden more than 20 winners, under all codes. This was their eighth win together and Ellie took up a position behind the leaders “just to get him settled and travelling strongly” and when asked to go and win his race there was an instant injection of pace which took the partnership 15 lengths clear of any other rival, through to the finishing line
Another Ellie, namely Holder, was seen to good effect with a determined and productive ride on Killinkere in the Conditions Level 2 race, which saw the biggest field of the day; ten being declared. Two winners from the Higham meeting in February were the only ones to make a contest of the race Mount Pleasant had won his last two races and Shentri represented Kelly Morgan’s stable who were looking for a double after Precious Bounty’s victory Killinkere’s last success came at Kimble in April2021whendefeatingnoneotherthanFamous Clermont and here the winning partnership were clear and away from any challengers from two out to take the spoils by 5½ lengths from Shentri with Mount Pleasant another 4 lengths further back. Ellie gave an honest assessment post-race by summarising the performance as “Better than expected. We wanted to be positive and he travelled and jumped well, kept going and stayed there”. This was the second win of the season, for Miss Holder and the 10th of her career to date and Killinkere’s success completed a double for trainer Georgina Ellis after Good Source’s win in the opening race of the afternoon.
The Stewards were busy with misdemeanours regarding passports and the over-use of the whip but this was another hugely successful Good Friday, Higham fixture on all fronts and once again immense credit to the officials responsible for the course preparation, ably assisted by the weather patterns, having attracted 46 runners from the 62 individual horses, entered for the meeting.
Welcome sunshine after the recent rains welcomed Kimble’s usual massive Easter crowd and racegoers were treated to 57 runners across the seven races, a celebrity winner of the centrepiece, a potential star of the future winning the Young Horse Maiden and three finishes of half a length or less.
The biggest cheers of the day greeted Lift Me Up, the winner of the feature race, the ten-runner 5G Comms Mixed Open over the shorter distance of two-and-ahalf miles. Trained by Maxine Filby near Banbury and owned by Red Bull Racing’s Christian Horner and his wife – former Spice Girl Geri – the progressive eight-yearold was scoring for the fifth time in eight starts. Held up early, and despite reminders with a circuit to race, rider Jack Andrews (who received a warm embrace from Geri afterwards) joined favourite Caryto Des Brosses two out and soon quickened clear to score by six lengths, with the running-on Not That Fuisse eleven lengths third.
“What a great day,” exclaimed Christian – who was accompanied in the winners enclosure by their children – afterwards. “We love our pointing – it’s a fun, family day out. We didn’t know what to expect, because Lift Me Up hadn’t won an Open, but he’s now won in all the grades, including a Hunter Chase He’s qualified for the Cheltenham Foxhunters now, so that will be the plan next year.” Both Christian and Geri were quick to praise their trainer, the former saying, “Maxine deserves the credit – it’s all down to her,” while his wife added, “Maxine’s brilliant. She doesn’t treat the horses like objects, but as individuals. She’s the Jerry Maguire of horse racing!”
Lift Me Up’s modest trainer was keen to claim the victory as a team effort, Maxine saying, “Everyone’s helped – The Marston Stud, physio Claire Ford, BT Vets, Jack, Gina and Tom Ellis, and Mervyn Loggin, whose schooling fences at Hinton-on-the-Hedges we use.” She’d been unsure about running, admitting, “It was his first run for me over two-and-a-half miles, so I didn’t know what would happen, but other cancellations meant we had to come here, and Jack said he’d go well. He may go for the Hunter Chase evening at Cheltenham now – it depends how he comes out of this.” Maxine also confirmed
that Christian and Geri’s Guilsborough winner Look At Mee will go to Edgcote next.
One of the cancelled meetings was at Maisemore Park, whose Goffs Four and Five-year-old Maiden Race was transferred as an extra race to the Kimble card. Eight took their chance and it went the way of the four-year-old Tormund Giantsbane, named after a Game Of Thrones character, owned by licensed trainer Dan Skelton and trained for pointing by his assistant Nick Pearce The debutant, ably ridden by Sean O’Connor, had been positioned in mid-division before joining leader Mahbury – who had quickened clear after the penultimate fence – at the last and, as the pair went head-to-head up the run-in, got the better of the duel to win by a head, with Wake Up Hadley third, seven lengths back.
“We bought him as a store last spring,” Nick told me, “And he wasn’t sold, so Dan hung on to him. We know the family well – his dam is a full sister to our Grade One winner Roksana – and he’s done everything nicely at home and schooled round Brafield-onthe-Green recently.” He confirmed that the horse will now go into training with Skelton, saying, “We’re doing it like the Barbers used to, starting their horses in points before they went into training with Paul Nicholls. He’s my only pointer this season – Dan stole Firak from me to run in Hunter Chases (!) – although there may be a few more youngsters in the future, as well as older ones to teach the young jockeys. Sean’s a
Tormund Giantsbane looking handsome in the
living example of that – he started in points and is now riding winners under rules.”
“That was very good,” smiled the winning jockey “He was green early on, left on his own in midfield, so I pulled him in between other horses with a circuit to go and he jumped and travelled better He idled up the run-in but did it well.” Sean, who rides Tormund Giantsbane every day at home, added, “Nick’s given me winners in points and Hunter Chases, and I’ve had plenty of rides under rules for Dan. They’ve been good to me and – while I would like to turn professional eventually, I’m happy with the opportunities I’m getting at the moment.”
The other Maiden on the card was sponsored by Elliott of London and nine faced the starter It saw the closest finish of the afternoon, Premier Fantasy and Bradley Gibbs (who also trains the winner) – who had gone for home two out and were four lengths clear at the last – just holding on by a head from the strong finishing Hopping Mad Wife, with Schiapars Magern also coming with a late run for five lengths third. Both the latter pair were making their debuts and are worth looking out for next time
The five-year-old is owned by Roy and Louise Swinburne, who live near Bridgnorth and have had plenty of pointers and rules horses over the years, including Cheltenham Intermediate Final winner Latzod’alm, who was trained by John Groucott. “We thought it was time for another pointer and who better to train
Kimble sunshineit than Brad?” laughed Roy. “This season’s been frustrating – he ran a good second at Garthorpe to a horse who has won since – but he wants decent ground and we’re fortunate that it’s just about come right today. He’s not for sale and we’ll run again this season – we’ll talk to Brad about plans but may target the Restricted Final at Stratford.”
“He’s a nice horse who’s been working tremendously at home,” confirmed the winning trainer-rider “We bumped into a nice one at Garthorpe and have been waiting for good ground, which is why he’s had a break, but we had to take our chance today.” Asked about the form of the yard after Premier Magic’s Cheltenham disappointment, Bradley said ruefully, “We haven’t had many runners – everywhere we enter seems to be cancelled. Hopefully Fier Jaguen goes back to Aintree (for the Foxhunters). He jumped well at Didmarton.”
There was another Welsh success for Abbie Wilmot’s 16/1 outsider Emtidaad, who beat nine rivals in the Richardsons Chartered Accountants Novice Riders Race with Josh Barber in the saddle Always prominent, he went clear after two out and – despite a slow jump at the last – had enough in reserve to hold on by a neck from the fast-finishing Port Of Mars. Favourite Monkey Puzzle was unable to quicken, three lengths away third, but ran well under a 10lb penalty
“It took us six hours to get here but that was worth it,” laughed Haverfordwest based Abbie, who also trained the third in the opener “He was also entered at Lydstep on Monday, but we made the decision to come here – we also came last year I ride him every day, it’s our first season in our new yard and that’s our first winner – we’ve had a few lumps and bumps! We’ve got six in training plus a couple of youngsters.”
Emtidaad’s 19-year-old rider, from Letterston near the Trecoed point-to-point course and son of former rider and trainer Marc, described the race to me “It was frustrating to start with because they were going fast then slow, so I decided to dictate from the front, and he jumped and travelled well. He got lonely in front, and I was getting worried, but he stuck his head out. “That’s my third winner,” said Josh, who’s also related to trainer Peter and jockeys James and Sean Bowen. “Will I go professional like them? Weight might be an issue, but never say never. I’m studying heating engineering at the moment, but after that we’ll see.”
Toby McCain Mitchell and Golan Fortune followed up their recent Brafield-on-theGreen success in the opening eight-runner Hildreth’s Garden Centre Conditions Race, for horses aged ten and over. Always prominent, the pair went third four out, second after the next, jumped past front-running Coolagh Park at the second last and were untroubled to score by three-and-a-half lengths with Powerstown Park keeping on well in third, two-and-a-half lengths behind.
The 12-year-old is owned by Master of the Oakley Hounds Simon Paynter, who said afterwards, “Phil Middleton gave me the horse two seasons ago and I didn’t think he’d run in races, but Phil lifted the nonracing agreement so this season, I hunted him until January, after which he went into training. The plan was to win my local cup (at the Oakley fixture), which I did.” Explaining the choice of former South Midlands rider Barry Denvir as trainer, Simon confirmed, “I’ve a share in a horse with Richard Phillips, to whom Barry is assistant, and Richard lets us use his gallops.”
Barry continued, “I used to ride for Simon’s wife Jo, and we’ve all become good friends. He didn’t jump well today – he only met about two fences right – but all credit to Toby, who gave him a brilliant ride He’ll hopefully go to Cheltenham next for the four-miler – he should stay, as Phil entered him for the Grand National once.”
Toby confirmed the trainer’s view of Golan Fortune’s sloppy jumping, saying, “It wasn’t as slick as last time, and I think cheekpieces might help However, I was happy with my position and turning in, I knew I had the others beat.” Asked how he came by the ride, he told me, “I’m based with Nigel TwistonDavies and go to Richard’s every couple of weeks and have sat on him and schooled him there. It was the 21-year-old’s 22nd career win, including four under rules this season – he was also third in the Cheltenham Foxhunters on Time Leader – but he wouldn’t be drawn on a professional career, smiling, “There are plenty of opportunities as Nigel’s amateur at the moment.”
The Waverton Investment Management Ltd Restricted, in which ten went to post, went the way of Nigel Padfield’s Padjoes Legacy. The eight-year-old was always going well for Zac Baker and – like so many of today’s winners – took the race by the scruff of the neck two out to win by five lengths and 15 from Well P and Lunar Contact.
The trainer co-owns the horse with his farrier, rider John Simpson, and described Padjoes Legacy – who gave John a debut success last season – as, “A very lazy individual who needs stoking up That’s his sixth run this season and – while he was second once – I hoped a change of jockey would do the trick. That’s the first time Zac’s ridden him.” As to his season so far, Nigel admitted, “That’s my first winner, but we’ve had lots of placings, I start mine late and it’s still only March. I’ve got six in.” About plans for the horse, he just laughed, “Win today!”
Alan Hill rarely comes away from Kimble empty-handed and he got on the scoresheet in the concluding Fantham Family Members Race, which had just two runners, both of whom he trained, odds-on Goleirihem and Izzie Marshall taking it by 30 lengths from Highland Glory, who may have got closer but for a slipping saddle on the final bend.
It was a tenth consecutive win (including those run at Kingston Blount) in his Members Race and he smiled, “We need others to run against us! I was worried Golan Fortune would run, as we wouldn’t have beaten him.” Son Joe chipped in, “We’re delighted for his owners Rodney and Gillie Mann as they’ve been very patient. He had problems last year but has come back in form this season and won well at Cothelstone He probably wants good to soft ground – he got jarred up on firm – and we may drop him back in trip now, and target the Stratford Restricted Final if it rains.”
Jockey Izzie Marshall was setting out on a second century of wins, having reached her 100th career success at Higham the previous day and she told me, “He jumped well – that’s what sealed the race – but he’s workmanlike and is never going to win on the bridle.” Talking about her own ambitions for the season, she admitted to aiming for to reach 100 pointing wins (she’s on 94) but played down any talk of the Lady Riders title, for which she is jointleader with Gina Andrews on 11, saying, “I’ve never been so close to Gina at this stage of the season, so I’ve got to believe I’m in with a chance of winning the title, but I wouldn’t be disappointed finishing second.”
The Ashley Wilde sponsored pony race that preceded the seven point-to-point contests was taken by Bruce Vaughan on On The Line
A tremendous atmosphere, a large crowd, wellingtons needed underfoot but with the sun shining a good old fashioned Easter Monday meeting was underway Admittedly, the fates had one more card to deal before the Welsh season could finally get started; a road traffic accident on the main A40 artery into Pembrokeshire meant a road closure caused suchlengthytrafficqueuesthatbothhorsesand medical staff were delayed on the single track roads across the county Racing was delayed for an hour but the flag eventually fell and the first race of the Welsh season was underway The Owen &Owen Cresselly Conditions race saw Bradley Gibbs setting off on the favourite Springtown Sal hoping to reap the reward for his mammoth journey from Hertfordshire, but Prime Pretender under Ellie Williams jumped off and made all the running, while they were briefly headed by Springtown Sal going to the last an awkward jump from the mare allowed the scopey gelding to mark his authority and he accelerated away to claim victory The nineyear-old son of Great Pretender had been a consistent performer in his career under rules having been often in the frame without getting his head in front. The move to the pointing field has seen him successful on two of his three runs. Ed Vaughan steered his father’s Jean Genie into third.
This was the first of a double on the day for Ellie Williams as she rode Voodoo Doll to victory in the Ladies Open coming out trumps in a match with Dandy Dan. Grandmother Mary Evans had questioned the eleven year old’s chances on the ground, but the multiple winning son of Getaway is a true stayer and saw out the trip well.
James King was also in trophy collecting form as was Pontypridd based trainer Luke Price with the duo pairing up to score three victories on the day. This is one of the most successful partnerships in the sport and the tally of wins that contribute to the championship contention of King every year is enhanced by the Price yard The winners on this occasion were Ciarabello (Maiden), Mini Fortune (Restricted) and Joyzain (Mares Maiden). As ever all the Price horses were impeccably turned out. Ciarabello looked to be the one to watch as he took his maiden in fine style by twenty lengths from Getaway Cory (Ed Vaughan) and Blackfinch (Oisin Radford). The French Bred gelding has raced in Ireland and was placed in a Ballynoe point to point in March of last year
The Men’s Open went the way of the ever-consistent LooksnowtlikeBrian and Oisin Radford. The gallant thirteen-yearold saw off the talented nine-year-old Jay Bee Whisky who had made the journey from Heythrop country with Max Comley.
It was the first of a double on the day for owner David Brace who had the pleasure of watching grandson Jude finish first past the post in the 148 pony race
For those who did not yet want to leave the sunshine, the day finished with a live band, with singer Mark Robinson who had ridden earlier in the day now along with his band making an excellent job of entertaining the crowd. The organisers put a lot of effort into making the day a successful one and it was good to be back racing in Wales after such a long weather induced absence.
The seasoned secretary of the meeting Jan Mathias who had dealt with the RTA hold up with such a cool practical approach had been determined owners would be looked after at Lydstep. Apart from the welcome for all owners in the Sponsors tent, provided an easter treat of Pembrokeshire produce to take home The race winners received stunning large planted pots from Lydstep Garden centre in addition to the other owners mementoes.
Everyone in Wales is now looking forward to our next meeting Llangeinor and Pentyrch revisiting Ystrad for the first time in several years.
Despite near-quagmire conditions Paxford managed to stage a six-race card that went without hitch and was witnessed by a bumper crowd seemingly undeterred by having to squelch their way through mud which was definitely the order of the afternoon.
Out on the course, title chasing Izzy Marshall and Toby McCain-Mitchell took the riding honours courtesy of a double apiece and on the training front former jockey Luca Morgan sent out his first pointing winner as a trainer
Marshall is riding in confident mode at present and took her seasonal tally to 13 winners - two valuable successes ahead of Gina Andrews with under a couple of months of the pointing term remaining.
Soldier Unknown, making his British debut for trainer Alan Hill, proved to be the first of Marshall’s victories as she came from last to first in the 5yo and over Maiden to snatch the spoils at the expense of Bellamys Boy and Spaghetti Pete by a neck and a short head.
Many could have been forgiven for thinking Marshall had overdone the waiting tactics aboard the five-year-old as she still had ground to make up off the home bend but they need not have worried as the pair won a shade cosily in the end..
Hill’s son and assistant Joe said: “I am certain he will improve for some better ground if we ever get it with all the rain we have endured and he will keep going now until the end of the season in the hope it dries up a bit
“He was bought privately by Chris Barber on our behalf out of Colin Bowe’s yard in Ireland and a big shout must go out to Chris for spotting the horse, who looks progressive and if anybody is interested he is for sale!”
Another Irish import Caldwell Diamond proved the second leg of the Hill/Marshall two-timer as he found plenty when asked to go about his business and eventually stretched 15-lengths clear of Joly Maker where it mattered.
A delighted Hill jnr commented: “He was bought out of Gordon Elliott’s yard but had never jumped a fence in Ireland, however, the moment we schooled him over fences he seemed a natural. He did nothing wrong in the race and should win again.”
With one eye on the lady jockey’s title race, Hill said of his fiance Marshall’s chances of lowering the colours of perennial champion Andrews: “It could be interesting but Gina has a lot of firepower at her disposal, however, Izzy will give it a go as she is riding at the top of her form at present.”
After a couple of near misses earlier on the card, McCain-Mitchell finally found the winner’s circle by landing the two concluding races on the card with Burtown and Perfect Pirate in the Restricted and Veteran Horse Conditions race respectively
Burtown just held off Prohus Yank in a driving finish by a short head but the pair may have had good fortune on their side as Thatshalfthebattle may well have prevailed but for getting rid of Will Badlan when challenging at the final fence.
Toby McCain-Mitchell and Perfect Pirate set Luca Morgan on his way as a winning trainer
But none of that bothered winning trainer Max Comley’s representative Elen Wylie She said: “Burtown’s two wins have been on very testing ground so he definitely had things in his favour on this occasion.”
It was far more straight-forward for McCain-Mitchell aboard Perfect Pirate as the pair came clear of Muckamore much to the joy of Luca Morgan as he was notching his first pointing victory as a trainer after a shock retirement from riding under Rules late last year
Morgan said: “This horse has been lucky to us as he provided my girlfriend Page Topley with her first success riding and now he has just given me my debut winner as a trainer.”
According to winning trainer Francesca Poste’s husband Charlie, In Our Dreams only wins when the mud is flying and the eight-year-old made no mistake in the Intermediate as he outpointed our Brother John under Zak Baker
EASTER MONDAY 1 APRIL 2024
By Kirsty BoutflowerThe Taunton Vale meeting at Cothelstone on Easter Monday managed to survive after an inspection following more overnight rain plus a heavy downpour shortly before the first race With Easter Eggs and hot-cross buns consumed, the once a year racegoers who make this an annual event in their calendars arrived in good numbers although those that turned up in trainers quickly saw the error of their ways amidst the liquid chocolate-brown mud which surrounded the paddock. However the horses coped rather better with the conditions and spectators were treated to a riding/training double by Josh Newman, a consecutive course win for locally-trained Ninth Wave and a first ever winner for jockey James Dawkins.
The Conditions race saw a first win for 17 year old James Dawkins on Aheadfullofdreams who his mum, Lara Pope had purchased from trainer Dean Summersby as a “safe ride” for him to do some team chasing on. Expressing a desire to have a go at pointing, James who is currently studying for his A Levels, had only had the one ride before when pulling up on the same horse at Badbury Rings in February Sent off the outsider of three, James dropped the horse to the rear of the trio behind the odds-on Ask Ben and Manofmanywords. With the longtime leader Ask Ben understandably getting tired on this his first race in four years, it was left to James on Aheadfullofdreams to jump to the front two fences from home to record a 6 length victory A beaming mum, Lara who herself used to ride as a jockey for Rod Baker and Oliver Carter, said “we didn’t think he’d cope with the ground today but he’s so genuine and just kept galloping. Huge thanks to Stuart Kittow and Chris Down who have let us use their gallops.” James explained “I gave him a breather on the bottom bend to let him fill his lungs back up and it’s really helped him get home.”
With many trainers fearing the ground would hinder their chances, Ninth Wave who had proved he was genuine whatever the ground after his win here at the last meeting, endorsed that in the first race for owners Peter and Kathy Musgrave. Once again facing 3 other runners, Ninth Wave comprehensively outclassed his rivals to record a facile 15 length win under jockey
Callum Pritchard. Kicking clear after bypassing the omitted open ditch, Ninth Wave still had enough in the tank to put in a fine jump at the last despite Callum saying how much he hated the ground. Afterwards Kathy Musgrave said “this is so perfect! I’m a Quantock girl and we won the Members here last time and Peter is a Taunton Vale man and now we’ve won this, both in the same season…with the same horse!” Trainer Teresa Clark said “hopefully we will be able to run him next time on ground that he really does enjoy!”
The Mixed Open only fielded 4 runners and it was expected that Coup de Pinceau who is an out and out stayer would repeat his win from the last meeting. However Call Simon hadn’t read the script and sat at the rear of the quartet biding his time under Ella Herbison. Timing her run to perfection, Ella produced Call Simon to challenge over the last and they went on to win by 5 lengths. Trainer Robert Chanin explained “he’s just got the one run so he needs to come late which is exactly what she did on him.” Owners Andrew and Sue Knox were full of praise for Robert saying “Call Simon is a lot of a character and Robert is the perfect horseman to persuade him how to behave properly!” The plan next was to go back to Dunsmore subject to it being rearranged, as he has winning course form there.
The Restricted race went to Will Biddick on Chris Barber’s Blagthebookies, a goodlooking son of Walk in the Park. Although Frontieres Lad tried to make a race of it with two fences left to jump, the favourite had too much class and sauntered home to win by 12 lengths. Chris explained afterwards “He won a point in Ireland before going to Christian Williams where he didn’t show
anything in 4 runs for him. But these were over 2 mile, 2 mile 3 hurdles and we just felt he’s every inch a 3 mile chaser physically I’m tempted to run him under Rules myself and take advantage of what is a nice rating.”
Another making a winning debut after returning from an unsuccessful stint under Rules was Irlandais in the finale, the Maiden, when he came home alone under Josh Newman. Despite the ground, he jumped well and this was a much needed confidence boost for the horse Josh’s partner Kayley explained afterwards, “He clearly has plenty of ability but hadn’t enjoyed running under Rules so we felt a switch to pointing might help We just thought we’d let him enjoy himself for a bit and have a few more runs before eventually going back to a professional career.” Josh earlier initiated his double when he won the Maiden Conditions race on Important Notice for the Blackmore Racing Club After sitting quietly at the back of the 6 strong field for most of the race, Josh sent the winner into the lead with two fences to jump and although All Night Parking threatened, he had enough to repel him by just over 2 lengths at the line Josh had bought the son of Sholokhov for owners, the Blackmore Racing Club, to replace the mare, Love That who had won for them at Larkhill and since been sold. Important Notice, who has the mighty Denman in his pedigree, looks to be one to follow and it will be interesting to see where he goes next especially on better ground.
EASTER MONDAY 1 APRIL 2024
By Russell SmithAMATEUR jockey Martin McIntyre celebrated a century of point-to-point winners with victory on Rocky Creed in front of a big crowd at the Old Berkshire Hunt meeting at Lockinge, near Wantage, on Easter Monday.
The 33-year-old rider reached the milestone after completing a double on the day following an earlier success on Douglas Longbottom, with the pair giving trainer Bea Coward her first double
He took up the running at the second-last on Rocky Creed in the second division of the Charles Russell Speechlys Maiden, and the The Barrow Street Racing Club-owned six-year-old swept clear to pass the post 10 lengths ahead of Modder River and Jack Teal.
Reflecting on reaching the landmark, McIntyre, who is based with David Pipe at Nicholashayne in Somerset, said: “It’s very special. I’ve got to try and catch Phil YorkI’ve only got 303 more to go!
“I had my first winner for Richard Barber at Milborne St Andrew (on Barneys Mate in 2013). It was down to him, Jack Barber and Chris Barber who got me going at the start.”
Rocky Creed was bought for £30,000 at Goffs Doncaster Sale last May, and Coward, who trains at Mere in Wiltshire, said: “We got this one at the same time as Douglas. He came third in Ireland in his only race and has just had a few niggly problems, but he has enjoyed this better ground here.”
On going described as Good, Good to Soft in places, but riding a little dead, 59 runners lined up in the seven races to provide the Bank Holiday racegoers with some excellent action.
McIntyre believes Douglas Longbottom has a big future after the six-year-old ran out an impressive winner of the Dubarry of Ireland Restricted.
Taking up the running going to the last in the 2m 5f contest, the son of Helmet shot clear to gallop powerfully through the line and record a 10-length verdict over Penniless and Gina Andrews.
McIntyre said: “He did it very well. It was never in doubt. I think he could go to the
top. It was a good show and a good training performance by Bea.”
Coward, who trains Douglas Longbottom for her aunt Catherine Mitchell, commented: “He has run four times and had two good seconds and two wins. Both seconds were to really good horses - Regatta de Blanc and Wolf Walker He will probably go to the Restricted Final at Stratford.”
Charlie Case was happy to come in for the ride on Deise Aba in the Webbs Builders Merchants Mixed Open with the 11-year-old’s regular partner, Zac Baker, going to Paxford where he struck on In Our Dreams to initiate an acrossthe-card double for trainer Francesca Poste.
Case tracked What A Glance and Murray Dodd on the Hemmings Racing-owned gelding, before collaring that rival on the run-in to win by two lengths and claim the Lockinge Challenge Cup
The winning rider said: “He does just what he had to do, hence as soon as the other horse came to him, he has gone away again and won with a bit in hand.
“My last winner was at the start of February, so it’s nice to get another one and thanks to Zac for going to Paxford. He’s also had a winner, so it’s worked out for both of us.”
Deise Aba was pulled up at Badbury Rings last time out, and Poste, who trains at Ettington, near Stratford, said: “I think he likes better ground. All his form is on soft ground, but I think that pulls them around and their old joints can’t cope with it as
they used to He might go for the fourmile race at Cheltenham.”
Southfield Theatre won the Mixed Open in 2019 and made light of his 16 years by returning to take the opening Moss Fallon Solicitors Old Berkshire Hunt Members, Subscribers & Farmers Race.
Lily Bradstock, who trains the admirable veteran at nearby Letcombe Bassett, set out to make all the running on the Angela Yeomangelding, before shrugging off the challenge of All Loved Up and Hugh Lillingston to score by 10 lengths with last year’s winner, Terrierman, and Nick Romain, third.
Bradstock said: “He is just wonderful. He is a sweet character, but a bit mad and just loves being a racehorse He is a legend and needs to be doing this.”
With her charge still showing plenty of enthusiasm, there are no retirement plans. “We will just see,” she added. “He does exactly want he wants to do We may find a ladies’ open for him.”
The victory also came with a certain poignancy, being a first winner since her father, Mark, passed away last month. “He would have loved to be here,” she said. “He loved this horse like we all do.”
Veteran Phil York notched a belated first winner of the season when Cusp Of Carabelli sprang a 20-1 surprise in the LuckGreayerBloodstockShippinwwgKeeperJockey Conditions Race (Level 2).
Martin McIntyre leads on Rocky Creed on the way to posting his 100th point-to-point winnerThe 57-year-old rider jumped Tim Underwood’s Irish import up alongside the front-running Myth Buster and Bradstock over the last two fences, before his mount pulled out more on the run-in to score by two lengths with the same distance back to Fama Et Gloria in third.
Formerly useful under rules for Co Kilkenny handler David M O’Brien, the 11-year-old had been pulled up on both his starts this season since joining Underwood’s Beedon stables, near Newbury
York said: “To be fair he has deserved to do it because he was so good under rules in Ireland. Tim told me after Charing he had a blood test, and it was all wrong.”
Underwood, who collected the George Collier Challenge Cup once again after previous successes with Tempelpirate (twice), Timmie Roe and Skipthecuddles, was registering just his second winner of the campaign.
“Everything I have run this season has been pulled up,” he said. “I have had a virus in the yard, and it has affected the horses.
“I ride him work every day and I just knew he had started to come back to himself He was bought through Martin Oliver.”
Rookie rider Tom Hutsby posted his third winner with a runaway victory on Shoal Bay for his trainer-father, Fred, in the Bear at Wantage (Arkell’s Brewery) Conditions Race (Level 2).
The 16-year-old had opened his account on the Marcine Marshall-owned gelding at Ampton last month, and the combination followed up in style, coming home 30 lengths clear of A Jet of Our Own and Fred PhilipsonStow
Tom said: “He winged the cross-fence and that put me in the lead. I took it from there. He was bowling along and galloping.”
Fred, who trains at Wellesbourne in Warwickshire, added: “He did it well and is a class horse on his day.”
The trainer and owner had combined to take the open with Zee Man 12 months ago, and Marshall commented: “Fred, who trains him, is amazing. We are just absolutely thrilled. He looked a picture, and I am so excited.”
Elliott England got off the mark for the season on just his second ride of the campaign with victory on Sforza Castle for his boss Ben Pauling in the first division of the Charles Russell Speechlys Maiden - the first time it had been split since 2013.
The six-year-old son of Milan, owned by the Naunton trainer’s wife, Sophie, took up the running five from home and had matters in hand when his nearest pursuer, O’Halloran’s Castle, unseated at the last, leaving the staying-on Windgap Hill and York to take second, two lengths adrift.
England said: “It is good to nick one like that for my boss. That’s my first winner for him.”
Assistant trainer Tom David, representing Pauling, said of the winner: “Barry Geraghty sourced him a few years ago and he was placed in maiden hurdles. This is his game He will win a few point-to-points.”
The meeting was preceded by two pony races, sponsored by Pinewood School, with brothers Oliver and Harry Vigors, 12 and 14 respectively, from Aldbourne, near Marlborough, making it a family double with wins on Little Anne and Miss Millfield.
Jack Andrews completed a treble on the day at Thorpe Lodge on Bank Holiday Monday to cap a successful weekend with five wins across three meetings.
Success came first in the Goffs four and five year-olds maiden race, rescheduled here after the loss of other fixture to the weather Jack rode Is This For Real to victory for Gina Ellis on the gelding’s racecourse debut, two lengths ahead of the William Easterbytrained Alltalknoaction. Paddy Barlow rode Kaviar Wood for Louise Bevin to complete a trio of four-year-olds in the places.
Jack’s double came in the conditions race later in the day, where Latenightrumble, again trained by Gina Ellis, secured a four-length win over Caballo Diablo, ridden by Paddy Barlow for Jonathan Barlow. The only other finisher was Get On The Yager (Will Thirlby), a long back. Gina Ellis’s training career has now brought seven winners from 17 starts at 41%.
Finally a treble was completed with a 13-length victory in the next race, the last of the day, the maiden. Here, Andrews rode Whatwasigoingtosay for Stuart Morris in the famous colours of Judy Wilson to beat Benefact, trained by William Easterby and ridden by Thomas Easterby, and Imperial Cloud (Huw Edwards for Laura Richardson).
The feature race of the day, the Mixed Open, looked good on paper and produced a race to match. Many were looking forward to Ragnar Lodbrok, trained by Jennifer Owen for Gerald Bailey, going head-to-head with Bothwell Bridge, owned by the Fernie Dingley Syndicate and trained by Kelly Morgan, but it was Camdonian, trained by Jack Teal for Mrs Furness who took the honours. Christy Furness rode the eight-year-old in a good finish, winning by five lengths from Ellie Callwood on Bothwell Bridge, with Alex Chadwick and Ragnar Lodbrok back in third. Jack Andrews was unseated from Badbad Leroy Brown early on and picked up a nice black eye for his efforts.
Earlier in the day Rupert Stearn had piloted the odds-on favourite Knight In Dubai in the veterans race and continued its excellent form between the flags to make it three races from three starts in points so far for the ex-chaser There were big cheers for local rider Will Grant who was making his debut in a point-to-point on Overworkdunderpaid, owned by Laura Morgan and trained but her sister Kelly Several bad mistakes didn’t put horse or rider off and he made a late move to second place in the run-in. The veteran Kayf Tara campaigner Monbeg Chit Chat was the last to finish.
The Intermediate race provided a bit of an upset when the 7/1-shot Jeaux D’Eau made it two wins in a row for Huw Edwards and Laura Richardson as they beat Courting Flow (Christy Furness) by three lengths in a good finish after both joint favourites Champagne Glory (Jack Andrews) and Grangeclare Diego (Paddy Barlow) had previously pulled up Red Delta (J. Dawson) was third.
Rhiannon Fletcher enjoyed a dream start to ownership when Oscar Montel, trained by Max Comley, took the first of the season’s ‘classics’ – The Lord Ashton of Hyde’s Cup at Cocklebarrow in January – on his first outing for her She then launched her riding career in a blaze of glory when scoring on the same horse at Friars Haugh on her February debut. Jake Exelby spoke to the 19-year-old about her stellar introduction to the world of pointing.
Tell me about yourself and your background in the sport
I’m from Colesbourne, between Cirencester and Cheltenham. Mum’s always had horses but I’ve been in farming my whole life – my parents work full time but have a smallholding with sheep I started working for Max part-time last season and this is my first year full-time with him. It’ll be the first spring I can remember when I haven’t lambed. I really enjoy that but I’ll be nice to have a change!
I had a mare of my own – Mighty Mae – who I was hoping to point, saw an ad that Max had placed (looking for staff) and fancied the opportunity, so I brought her with me
What’s Max like to work for?
He’s brilliant – laid-back, fun and helpful. Everything I know about the sport, I’ve learnt from Max.
How did you come to acquire Oscar Montel?
Mighty Mae had an accident in her box and Oscar’s owner (Charlie Noell of the Merriebelle Stud) was looking to sell, so Max put in a word and they kindly gave him to me last October
Tell me about the wins at Cocklebarrow and Friars Haugh
Because I’d never ridden, Max thought he’d put James King on Oscar first time. We didn’t think he had a chance, but James persuaded us to run him and I’m glad he did!
Friars Haugh was a long day – we left the yard at 2.30am and it took us eight hours. We took four horses there (three of them won) and we were in the fourth race I was more nervous about the changing rooms, weighing in and weighing out, than the race itself Harry Greasby, who also works for Max, helped me out and looked after me well.
In the race, I froze out the back and remember seeing Max and Harry who were swearing at me, telling me to wake up, so I kicked on! It was only when I was a few lengths clear jumping the last that I thought I’d win. How did I feel? Over the moon and on cloud nine but knackered!
When I rode him again (also at Friars Haugh, in March, where they were fourth) we made a much better start but I didn’t kick on soon enough. It was still a great experience and I learnt a lot.
What are your plans with Oscar Montel and for yourself?
He’ll have a few easy weeks now. I’d like to get some more runs into him, but I hope to have him again next year so would rather save him for that if he needs a break.
Initially, I was just doing it with the mare and then Oscar – now I’d like to have a second horse with Max next season and maybe pick up a few outside rides. I’m enjoying it more than I thought I would but it’s definitely just a hobby and I don’t want to turn professional. It would be nice to win a local ladies novice riders title
Which other jockeys do you admire and why?
James King rides for Max a lot and comes to the yard to ride work. He’s impressive, a nice chap, good fun and a brilliant rider
Which horse would you most like to ride in points?
Roseburg, a mare owned by Kevin Crawford, who also owns (Max’s prolific winner) Jay Bee Whiskey She’s sweet and lovely to handle – I ride her most days
As for horses from other yards, I’m not very good on them!
What’s your favourite course?
Of course I like Friars Haugh! It’s quirky and you need to ride it tactically
I always wanted to ride at Andoversford, which has now closed. It’s my local course and I used to go there with my family
What do you enjoy most about pointing?
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the community feel. Everyone knows everyone and it’s competitive, but in a nice way I’m finding it really rewarding to work with horses and see them run and do well.
What would you do if you weren’t involved with horses?
I’d probably still be working on the farm! I continue to do that on my days off
Who are your favourite musicians and TV shows?
I’m a big fan of James Blunt. We always have music playing in the yard and I also like county – especially Luke Combs.
I really like watching this country, which is based on the area I come from. I hope I’m not too similar to Kerry (the character from the show)!
What would be your dream holiday destination?
I’ve always wanted to go to Australia or New Zealand to work with horses or on a farm.
Do you have a nickname?
I just get called Rhi most of the time
