Photo: Alun SedgmoreSine Nomine (131) was a popular winner of the St James Place Festival Challenge Cup at Cheltenham, posting a figure (once the standard mares allowance is added in) in line with those returned by other recent winners. This was the third time in the past four years that victory has gone to a British trained horse who had previously mixed Hunter Chasing with Point to Pointing – giving the lie to those who believe that British pointing model would be better served by being aligned to that in Ireland. It was something of a surprise to see Time Leader (133) run so well in third, on ground he had previously indicated he detests. It was seemingly stamina more than ground conditions that eventually found him out here, but this was nevertheless an excellent Aintree trial.
With Cheltenham over, the focus returned to Pointing and at the Hurworth, Sin Nomine’s owners local meeting, there was further evidence of the merits of British pointing – this time relating to how useful a role it can play in rejuvenating seemingly jaded ex-Rules performers. Those with fairly long memories may remember Mount Mews (122) giving Black Corton a run for his money in the 2018 Reynoldstown. He lost his way after that, falling some two stone in the ratings, but his win in last Saturday’s opening Hunt race was his seventh in eight starts between the flags. He will remain very difficult to beat on the Yorkshire circuit, particularly if the ground remains on the soft side. It was to Fire in her Eyes’ (114) great credit therefore that she managed to run the winner to just three quarters of a length – the pair finishing some 60 lengths clear of the remainder She is improving rapidly, looks a through stayer and has claims to be one of the leading novices of the season.
Later, Soldier of Rock (98) made quite an impression when taking the maiden. A strong son of Irish Derby winner Soldier of Fortune, he had shown distinct promise in three outings in Irish Points and was sent off favourite on this his British debut. He didn’t disappoint, lobbing along behind the leaders before cruising into the lead going out on the final circuit and quickly drawing clear- his rivals strung out like washing behind. He can be forgiven for a couple of novicey jumps in the latter stages, indeed his head carriage was also a little high suggesting at greenness, and we await his next outing with a fair degree of anticipation.
Down at picturesque High Easter it was David Kemp and Dale Peters who took the plaudits combining for a treble which began with Designed to Win (104) He had been an impressive at Garthorpe last month but that was over the shorter trip and here his rider was keen to preserve reserves, only challenging on the run to the last. It’s a relatively short finish at High Easter however and connections must have been somewhat relieved to see him eventually prevail, getting the better of the doughty Mister Splash (108) There will be other days for the runner-up, who went well for Murray Dodd, particularly as in the post-race interview Designed to Win’s trainer intimated that his horse had the potential to be one of the best he has trained. High praise indeed from a handler who has saddled two winners of the Horse and Hound Cup and winners of the Cheltenham four miler and the John Corbett.
The concluding maiden was won by For One Night Only (92) who was thoroughly expected to go one better after an encouraging debut in a hot maiden at Horseheath. He had to work hard however to get the better of the Turner’s Atlantic Fleet (96), the runner-up something of an unknown quantity having finished second in a very slowly run two runner event at Ampton. Here however the pair posted figures some 9lbs in advance of their performance ratings and they can both be expected to improve
There was just the one Sunday meeting, the Oakley, where the going was very heavy (the going allowance almost off the scale). These conditions admirably suited Elmdale (FR) (92), who ploughed through the mud to finish a distance clear of his rivals in the opening maiden. In truth however this was just an average maiden and Elmdale will probably be remembered more in the future for being a half-brother to Fier Jaguen than for his own racecourse performances.

The East Anglian season just keeps on providing us with excellent racing and the High Easter Racing Club meeting was another, which produced a series of tight finishes.
Judge, Jonathan Benson, who officiates at all the fixtures in the region, is always diligent in his duties but had to be fully focused during the whole afternoon’s proceedings, with five out of the six races being decided by a winning distance of one length or less.
Themeetingbecameatriumphantafternoonfor trainer David Kemp who is based at Kilverstone near Thetford. Three horses, all owned by David and his wife Imogen and ridden by Dale Peters, were brought to the Essex course and all returned home as winners. Although not the first treble achieved by David, it was the first time all his winners carried his and his wife’s colours. David has nine horses in his care, of which four are owned by him and his wife and the other one, Rebel Dawn Rising had won a Fakenham hunter ’chase the previous day!
Designed To Win initiated the treble, in the Restricted race, after overcoming a mistake at the second last fence, then threw down a challenge to the front-running Mister Splash to gain a short-head verdict, at the winning line Kemp was pleased with the battling qualities of the winner whilst the winning jockey, Dale Peters, was honest in his post-race appraisal that if the pairing had made another error at the last, their chance of winning would have gone
Law Of Gold continued the Kemp’s winning ways with a 2¾ length success over Captain Biggles in the Mixed Open with Tullys Touch a further ¾ length adrift. Only four horses faced the starter and approaching two fences out all four still possessed winning chances but again jockey Peters galvanised enough effort from Law Of Gold, to claim victory The winner already has an impressive CV and this was his eighth pointing success and will again be aimed at the 4 mile contest at the hunter‘chase meeting at Cheltenham, a race he won last season.
All The Ammunition completed the Kemp’s successful afternoon with victory in the 3¾ mile PPORA Club Members’ Conditions contest.
Described by his trainer as “genuine”, All The Ammunition took up the running three fences
out and although Mitchouka came with a strong and sustained run around the final bend and approaching the last, Peters was again able to secure victory with a powerful finish, from the saddle A sad postscript to the race with Koyote, who had led the field for over two circuits, collapsed and died after suffering an internal haemorrhage, after completing the race in 4th place.
If it was a day of total success for one stable then there is the other side of competitive racing, namely narrow defeats and that was how the Turner family’s day resulted. Always happy to be involved and ever magnanimous in defeat, their two runners Mister Splash and Atlantic Fleet endured slender reverses but trainer Ed, brother Ben and mum Rose will, on reflection, be delighted with their horses’ performances. Whilst Mister Splash and jockey Murray Dodd just failed to lead all the way, in the earlier Restricted race, Atlantic Fleet again with Dodd in the saddle, progressed from being last along the meadow back-straight to taking the lead, in the closing Maiden race, approaching the final stages. Driveondonn who was jumping well and leading three out was coming under pressure and it was the Andrews’ siblings, Jack on Whatwasigoingtosay and Gina on For One Night Only who emerged as Atlantic Fleet’s main rivals. In another classic, close finish Gina manged to encourage every last effort from her mount to snatch victory on the line, by a head, from the Turner runner
Two young jockeys, Archie Loweth and Tom Hutsby, were both paying their first visits to High Easter and this date and venue will become particularly memorable to nineteen-year-old Loweth who rode his first winner on Pym. in
the Small Keepers’ Conditions race Based with Bradley Gibbs and riding for Gibbs’ partner Clare Sheriff, Loweth, expanding on his eventing background, produced a competent ride on the six-time winner under rules. With two of the five runners unseating, it was left to the remaining three contestants to make it another desperately close encounter As the trio rounded the final bend, Red Maple, the odds-on favourite, and Alex Chadwick found themselves short of room and were forced to switch to come round the outside of his two opponents. The final outcome saw Pym hold on by ¾ of a length with Ecco just 1½ lengths further back. At the presentation, Loweth described his mount as needing to get his confidence back which the partnership demonstrated admirably and “ he jumped amazingly and stayed on” were his post-race comments.
Tom Hutsby, at the age of sixteen, is gaining confidence and learning with every ride and was seen to good effect in the opening PPORA Club Members’ Novice Riders’ race A Toi Phil and the favourite Muckamore were vying for the lead throughout the first and most of the second circuit until Hutsby moved Young Rich forward to take the lead three out but Muckamore stuck to the task, despite conceding 10lbs to the eventual winner, this became the afternoon’s first tight finish, as there was just one length between them at the finish. Hutsby was riding for the Ellis’ stable for the first time and Young Rich’s victory initiated a first and last race double for trainer Tom Ellis.
We have been very fortunate to have gone home delighted by the racing witnessed, in all seven East Anglian meetings that have taken place, this season,
Captain BigglesTullys TouchLaw of Gold High Photo: Graham BishopAfter the ongoing criticism of the Cheltenham Festival with its prohibitive costs and quagmire car-parks, it was a refreshing change to be at Milborne St Andrew where the course (and car parks) coped admirably with the overnight rain to produce some excellent racing for a happier crowd who brought children in for free and a colourful stag party seen enjoying the great value refreshments on offer Highlights from the racing were two young horses continuing their progression, a riding double for Will Biddick and a pointer who doubles as a Pony Club horse taking the Open.
The Mixed Open was a family affair when Liam Corcoran’s Itacare held off a rallying course favourite in Tom Barton under his 16 year old son, Rian to record his third winner since graduating from Pony Racing. Leased for the season by Richard Wilkin and Somerset Racing, Itacare has fast established himself as talented in other areas of equine sport attending the South Devon West Pony Club under Rian’s 10 year old sister Niamh, where he is enjoying dressage She also schools him at home and across Dartmoor with occasional visits to the beach too. Rian’s mum Clare explained “He’s the most wonderful, kind horse who is even ridden by 7 year old Aoife and 5 year old Fionnaula - we just love him and are so grateful to Richard for this opportunity.” Rian now works for Will Biddick full-time where he is getting plenty of tuition with weekly coaching from Rodi Greene and this certainly looks to be paying off
Will Biddick recorded the first of his wins aboard Punches Cross who had finished behind Eritage the last time they met at this course in January However Will decided a change in tactics may be in order and made every post a winning one to record a 14 length victory over Imogen’s Thunder with a tired Eritage who tried to chase the winner, a long way back in third. It was the first winner in ten years for owner Michael Sweetland on hand in the winner’s enclosure with wife Heather to greet Punches Cross. Michael explained, “I had planned to send another horse to Daniele and Joe but he’d had a foot injury which was taking an age to come right so Joe suggested we buy Punches Cross and this is his third run for us.”
Will’s second winner was more of a surprise as Locked Down Lad appeared from nowhere to take the second division of the Flat Race by 10 lengths from Weston Bay and longtime leader, The Astronomist who had looked likely to fight out the finish. This was a first home-bred winner for owner Kieran Johns who was delighted with the first foal of his winning pointing mare, Euro Bond. “We’ve got this breeding thing sorted!” he laughed as he went on to explain they had thought the gelding had really wanted faster ground and would very much need the experience. The earlier division had gone to Josh Newman on Go Johnny Go for the Picnic Production who had been successful last year with Paloma Blue at the meeting. This finish was much tighter as Josh just got the better of favourite Posh Dude with Just A Glance a close third. Steph Jones who runs the syndicate explained Simon Clare had so enjoyed his season last year with Paloma Blue, that he reinvested in some youngsters and she had also lured in some work colleagues for whom this was their first ever winner
Another outfit enjoying their first winner was former jockey Gordon Treacy who’s Pebbly Pour Toi dead-heated with Dean Summersby’s Knock on Wood in the opening Maiden. For Gordon this was a dream start to his training career which had been put on hold when the horse had been walking around the paddock at Cothelstone last week only for it to be
abandoned. This looked a nice horse both on paper being a half-brother to the very useful No Flies On Him and on this his debut and he could be one to keep an eye on although there was a possibility he could be for sale For Dean Summerbsy this was a welcome winner having been on the “cold” list since last May. Knock On Wood is good-looking son of Gatewood and Darren Edwards said “this is the first horse of Dean’s who’s given me a really good feel and hopefully they are now turning a corner.”
Glenmount continues his upward progress when taking the Restricted by 4 lengths under James King for trainer Julie Wadland and the 360 Racing Club A facile winner at Badbury Rings, he jumped well, kicking clear two out and was too classy for the rest of the field. Paul Miller who runs the racing club said “all credit to Julie who has completely turned this horse around since he arrived from Ireland and he’s really starting to fill his frame.” Julie sourced the horse through Richard Curran and every horse he has found for her has won. Harry Ryall’s Another Furlough is another who is progressing rapidly and he had enough left in the tank at the end of the race to put in a spectacular leap at the last under Rob David to record an easy 4 length victory over Duc de Bourbon with Young Buck a further 8 lengths away in third. This was a decent Conditions race and his next outing would now be the Intermediate Final at Cheltenham on May 3rd.
Itacare, Rian Corcoran (1st) Mixed Open RaceThis weekend the Hurworth held their meeting at Hutton Rudby, there were six competitive races and on display was the Cheltenham Hunter chase trophy which was won by the Hurworth qualified Sine Nomine only 24 hours earlier, and it was straight back to business for the Cheltenham Festival winning jockey John Dawson, as he steered the prolific veteran Mount Mews to further success in the opening Hunt Members race It was also a great day to remember for young riders Isobel Mactaggart and Katriona Brown as they both rode their first winners.
Fresh from his victory at the Cheltenham Festival, John Dawson steered Mount Mews to victory despite burdened with a 10lb penalty Fire In Her Eyes was challenging from the second last, however Jack Teal’s mount could never quite get her head past the 13yo and was the start of a double for local trainer Lucinda Hughes. Her second success came in the Men’s Open race with Super Citizen, always to the fore under Nick Orpwood the pair’s assignment was made very simple when odds on favourite Buster Valentine blundered two out when making a strong challenge, allowing Super Citizen to come home with relative ease and Cuneo filling second under John Dawson.
Jockeys having their first career successes
on the day included Katriona Brown, who steered her own Legalized to success in the ROR Veteran Horse race The pair were second approaching the straight, but a strong run towards the line saw the pair pull clear of the favourite Poncherello and Henry Crow back in second, whilst Buzzard Trix was further back in third. Katriona who studies at Liverpool University during the week, is studying Mental Health Nursing and keeps her pointer at Ian Browns. With such a busy schedule, Katriona is aided with training Legalized by Jenifer Foster “Jenifer helps me out when I’m not always there and with having only one horse I’ve had to find other ways of keeping fit, so I’ve signed up to the Manchester marathon” laughed Katriona, who is currently in her last year of university
Northern raider Isobel Mactaggart was another having her first victory between the flags as she partnered Thosedaysaregone to victory in the Ladies Open race A very talented recruit back in his day, potentially his greatest effort came when winning the Ladbrook hurdle and then going on to finish third in the Coral Cup at the 2019 Cheltenham Festival. The winning pair had to work hard up the run in as they were persistently challenged by fellow Northern contender Supremely Lucky and Natasha Cookson, whilst Red Opium lacked the pace
to get past the leading pair back in a close third under Rosie Howarth.
The Restricted race saw a very promising recruit get back to winning ways in Grangeclare Diego under Paddy Barlow. It was a fitting victory as Paddy was unseated from the winner two weeks prior and airlifted to hospital, but he didn’t let that discourage him and the pair forged clear up the straight to win easily, with Imperial Imp back in second under Isla John. It was an impressive victory for trainer John Barlow who admits he is certainly one to follow in the future “he is a very good horse we’ll continue pointing this season, then he’ll probably go novice chasing next year” said John who admits he has a very bright future.
The final race on the day was the Open Maiden race and saw Joe Wright pilot the very impressive Soldier Of Rock to an effortless 18 length victory His recent placed efforts in Ireland made it no surprise to see him come home in such an easy fashion, second place saw the Joe Wright trained but Lyall Hodgins rode We Done It take second and looks sure to get his head in front before long, whilst Sponthus was a similar margin back in third under Thomas Easterby
John Dawson unsaddles Mount Mews after their win in the MembersSUNDAY 17 MARCH 2024
By Russell SmithTom Ellis brought the curtain down in style on his record-breaking point-to-point training career when Anariza gave him a winner with his last runner at the Oakley Hunt meeting at Brafield-on-the-Green, near Northampton.
The five-time champion is set to take out a full trainer’s licence with Latenightpass on course to be his first runner under rules in the Randox Grand National at Aintree on April 13 with his wife, Gina Andrews, on board.
And Anariza ensured he went out on a high note between the flags with a smooth success under Jack Andrews in the JRL Group Four and Five Years Old Point-toPoint Flat Race on Sunday.
Owner-breeder Sarah Faulks’s four-year-old filly cruised into the lead in the two-mile contest and when Andrews let out an inch of rein, she shot clear to pass the post eight lengths ahead of Zloty and Dale Peters.
Anariza was Ellis’s 293rd point-to-point success, and he said: “That’s my last point-to-point winner It’s a tad bit emotional and it’s really nice to sign off with a win.
“Pointing has taught me everything I know. I started off riding and progressed into training. I have made a lot of mistakes and
learnt a lot from it. I hope it will stand me in good stead for the next chapter
“Gina will take over the point-to-pointers we have left. My focus is very much on getting Latenightpass ready for Aintree I am back to school for my last trainer’s module and hopefully I will have my licence through by the end of the week.
“I’ve had five championships on the trot. I broke the record for the most winners in a season and broke it again the next season. To have a horse like Latenightpass in the greatest race in the world is a small part of a massive fairytale.”
Ellis, who is based at Marton, near Rugby, added of Anariza: “She is a very smart filly This one is not for sale This one will go into training. If the ground stayed right, we could go for an Aintree bumper with her in April or the one at Stratford.”
The organisers did a terrific job to get the rearranged fixture on following the recent rain, which left the going soft, heavy in places, with 25 runners lining up in the six races.
Barry Denvir produced a fine training performance to record his first winner as Golan Fortune returned from an 871-day
absence to land a gamble in the Eight-YearOlds and Over Conditions Race (Level 3), sponsored by Lifestyle Gates.
Formerly smart under rules for Phil Middleton, the 12-year-old was retired after being pulled up with an irregular heartbeat at Stratford in October 2021.
But, after being given to Simon Paynter to go hunting, the gelding went back into training in January with Denvir, who is based at Great Rollright, near Chipping Norton.
Backed down from 3-1 to evens joint favourite in this three-runner affair, Toby McCainMitchell’s mount showed he retained all his old enthusiasm, taking it up from Touch Tight and Phil York after the fifth-last before holding off that rival’s renewed challenge to score by four lengths.
Denvir, who hails from Downpatrick and is assistant to Richard Phillips, said: “This race was always the plan with Simon being a master of the Oakley Hunt. He was a very good horse in his day, and we fancied him today even after two years off the track. Good horses train themselves and we are delighted with him.
“What I am most delighted about, though, is that it is St Patrick’s Day. I had flights to go
back home, but when this was rescheduled, I cancelled them.”
Only two runners went to post for the Oakley Mixed Open, sponsored by Brian Currie (Milton Keynes Ltd), but it produced a thrilling finish with Ragnar Lodbrok getting up in the dying strides to pip Master Templar by a short head and repeat last year’s success
Alex Chadwick on the winner tracked Master Templar and Gina Andrews, who still led by a length and a half at the last where Ragnar Lodbrok made a mistake.
But with Chadwick bringing Newmarket trainer Jenny Owen’s nine-year-old wide on the run-in, his mount found more to snatch the spoils.
Ragnar Lodbrok had won at Guilsborough just seven days earlier for The Whiskey & Water Partnership consisting of John Sharp, David Docker, Robin Vestey, Alice VaughanJones and Gerald Bailey, who said: “We were not exactly sure whether that had left a mark, but he has a bit of class. He is no mug, but he always keeps a little bit to himself
“We might run him at Easter somewhere and then have a go at the Cheltenham hunter chase meeting.”
Chadwick, who was recording his 18th winner of the season, said: “He is a very talented monkey I thought I had won by a head. If I had jumped the last well, I would have won by further.”
Newmarket owner-trainer John Wright’s patience with Orion D’Aubrelle was rewarded with victory in the PPORA Club Members Conditions Race (Level 3) for Novice Riders, sponsored by Bedfordshire NFU Mutual.
Running for the first time since picking up a minor tendon injury at Higham last April, the 11-year-old, ridden by Josh Parker, joined Some Operator and Daisy White at the fourth-last before drawing clear for a 10-lengths success
Wright said: “I got him from Tattersalls for £2000 He had lost his way in Ireland where he had been running in good races and was a 135-rated horse with Willie Mullins before joining Shark Hanlon. I took my time with him, and we have ended back here with a winner.”
It was a fourth success for Parker, who works for James Owen. He said: “I went through a wing yesterday, so it’s great to get a winner under my belt.”
Sawtry trainer-rider Dale Peters believes Cash Or Card has a big future after the Irish import made it two wins from as many starts in this country with an easy success in the three-runner Restricted, sponsored by Hatters.
Winner of a Sheriff Hutton maiden in January, the six-year-old cantered up alongside Ultra Viers and George Case, before coasting home by 15 lengths.
Peters commented: “I have been waiting for better ground, but it was time to run again, and he was impressive. I think he will be even better on better ground. He has the potential to go to the top if we have a lot of luck on our side.”
The gelding is owned by the This That & The Others Partnership made up of Paul and Andrew Walpole, Andrew West and Georgie and Beryl Close, who said: “He jumped like a dream. He is a very special horse I think he could go a long way.”
Owner-trainer Phillippa Taylor was delighted to see Elmdale finally open his account with a runaway triumph in the Oakley Maiden, sponsored by Phipps Henson.
Revelling in the testing conditions, the 10-year-old grey took up the running under Zac Baker after a circuit and gradually drew clear of his rivals to come home 30 lengths clear of Rockhamton and Patsy Page
Taylor, who trains at Fringford, near Bicester, said: “We bought him four seasons ago off Nigel Twiston-Davies for my daughter, Phoebe, to ride She has just had a baby, so Zac rode him.”
Baker added: “I couldn’t believe I was nearly a fence clear when I looked through my legs. He is no showstopper, but he keeps going.”
The meeting was preceded by two pony races with Camilla Froggatt, 11, from Great Rissington, near Stow-on-the-Wold, taking the One Fat Hen 138cm contest by four lengths on Warmwell Lizzie
Harry Vigors, 14, from Aldbourne, near Marlborough, then claimed the Barton Petroleum 148cm Race aboard 10-lengths winner Miss Millfield.
Sine Nomine’s win in Friday’s St James’s Place Festival Hunters’ Chase at Cheltenham was a triumph for Fiona Needham and her parents Pat and Robin Tate
Yet it was also another tremendous fillip for and an endorsement of British point-to-pointing, in which Robin first rode 70 years ago No less importantly, it was a boost for small-string, small-budget yards across the land. Eight-year-old Sine Nomine, who Needham and her father bought, train and own, cost just £2,400 as an unbroken store at Goffs UK’s August Sale in 2019, and the family now have another simmering prospect in five-year-old Red Delta. They dug deep with a £3,000 investment to buy him in the same Doncaster ring, also unbroken, in 2022.
“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind week,” says Needham, manager at Catterick racecourse and an independent member of the Point-to-Point Authority Board. Heaps of good wishes have arrived via texts and WhatsApp messages, a variation on the letters and cards that arrived at the family’s Yorkshire farm in 2002 when she won the same race riding Last Option. He was another example of reaching the top via affordable money, having been bred by her parents using local stallion Primitive Rising and who by the covering date had become the last option, hence the name
Photo: Tom MilburnTwenty-two years later, Racing TV’s coverage from Cheltenham caught the moment as Sine Nomine was led like a fresh horse along the chute towards the winner’s enclosure with the senior half of the The Father & Daughter Partnership, all 86 years of him, striding purposefully behind. “They’re pretty sprightly and he rides out every day,” says Needham of her parents, adding: “It’s been wonderful and non-stop. I think Dad found this win more real. When Last Option won it didn’t sink in for two days, but this time he took it all in. It was a wonderful day and the way the mare did it – she was so gutsy.
“She came out of the race very bouncy and is in good form. Now we need to sit down and discuss a plan going forward, but she won’t be going to Aintree [for the Randox Foxhunters’ Chase]. Last Option ran three times in the Scottish National, finishing fourth, sixth and then pulling up, but while it’s a bit bold to think of that at the moment it’s on the table An alternative would be the Cheltenham evening meeting and then the Horse & Hound Cup [at Stratford], but I wouldn’t want to run her if the ground became quick.”
Sine Nomine has been raised to a mark of 133 by the BHA handicapper, which more or less ensures she would get into the Scottish National on April 20 Another British point-to-pointer, Latenightpass, is heading to the Grand National which takes place at Aintree one week earlier, teeing up a possible double for the sport of unimaginable heights.
A further reason for swerving Aintree’s Foxhunters’ Chase with the mare is the 14-day ban handed to rider John Dawson for using his whip twice over the limit in last week’s race and which means he would not be available to take the ride Needham says: “I want to keep John on her He’s the best amateur in the north and I feel he deserves more recognition.”
So what of The Father & Daughter Partnership’s next good thing, Red Delta, a son of Alne Park Stud stallion Ocovango Placed twice in two runs as a four-year-old, he has impressed this season with wins at Duncombe Park and Charm Park, but while entered at Garthorpe this weekend he is more likely to head to Thorpe Lodge on Easter Monday.
Of his future, Needham says: “They’ve got to stay sound, but he is a nice horse and it’s amazing because he didn’t cost much. Taking nothing away from Sine Nomine, because she is lovely and a lovely character, but he’s got the size and scope to be a proper horse.”
Back in January 2020, I visited Robin Tate and Fiona Needham’s North Yorkshire yard for a ‘Trainer Talk’ feature, writes
Jake ExelbyFiona rode work that day on an unraced four-year-old filly by Saint Des Saints, about whom she said: “We think a lot of her and she’s schooled fantastically. We went to Doncaster and Dad said, ‘I like that’. I’m not a fan of mares and fillies but couldn’t sway him, so we bought her unbroken.”
The filly in question was – of course – Sine Nomine (so called because she was bought unnamed and Sine Nomine means ‘without a name’ in Latin!) Covid put paid to a planned campaign in the season of my visit, but she made her debut at Sheriff Hutton in April 2021, won her first race at Alnwick in January 2022 and the rest – as they say – is history
Before I left, I persuaded Robin and Fiona to pose with the old and torn woollen jersey in which she had ridden Last Option for her father when winning the 2002 Cheltenham Foxhunters. Little did any of us know those same colours – albeit this time in smarter silks worn by John Dawson – would be carried to victory in the same race just four years later by that little unraced filly of whom Fiona was so fond.
The Barfoot-Saunt family are steeped in South Gloucestershire point-to-pointing. 53-year-old Geoff, a plumber and electrician by trade, had his first ride in 1988, his first winner in 1992 and has now posted 84 victories between the flags, 11 under rules, plus plenty more in Australia! Son Harvey joined his father as a point-to-point rider –on his 16th birthday – at Bonvilston last May, where they both rode in the Mens Open, taking the family honours as he finished second on Macs Legend, 11 lengths in front of his Dad on Numero Uno Geoff’s wife Tracey owned and trained both runners –she holds a rules licence and is probably best known for multiple winning sprinter Bay Watch. Jake Exelby talked to the trio recently at their Charfield yard, as Geoff career winds down, Harvey’s takes off, and Tracey keeps the pair in check!
An obvious first question to Geoff and Harvey is about that first race Geoff confirms that the objectives were, “For both of us to get round. We did it the whole way together, pretty much holding hands!” So, was Harvey supposed to win the family battle? “Of course not,” laughs Geoff Harvey agrees, “There’s an underlying rivalry and quite a bit of competition!” And who’s the better rider? Geoff is unequivocal – “Harvey, by a long way He’s ridden so many horses compared to me At his age, I’d only sat on two ponies and a horse, while the yard’s
been full of his ponies for the last ten years.” – while his son is more circumspect. Says Harvey, “Dad’s got more experience and has taught me everything. Since I’ve been pony racing, we’ve always walked the course together and he’d tell me how to ride it.”
Barfoot-Saunt Senior v Junior Round 2 came at Larkhill last month and bragging rights again went to Harvey on Borugale, as he finished just in front of Geoff on Bellamys Boy. “I think the race came a bit quick for Dad’s horse,” commiserates Harvey with a
smile However, it was third time lucky for Geoff when they next met – as he finished ahead of his son twice at Didmarton earlier this month!
Geoff avoids the question as he talks me through his long career “I couldn’t tell you how many winners I’ve ridden,” he confesses. “Between 120 and 130 maybe (you’re not far off Geoff), including those in Australia. I first went there in 1993 and ended up staying for 18 months – it was a brilliant way of life. I’d normally go out after Umberleigh, at the end of their season, but in 2001 I jumped on a plane the day pointing was cancelled because of foot and mouth and did a full season there. Why did I stop going? I got married!”
Geoff winds the clock back to why he started race-riding. “Horses were obvious,” he explains “Mum had a riding school and Dad show jumped. But they weren’t racing people However, at school my roommates were (former champion) Andrew Dalton and Charlie Hancock. Charlie was by far the best rider but had to stop after a bad fall. Anyway, we were about 14 and they were arguing about which of them would ride the most winners, so I threw my hat in the ring and said I’d ride more than them –I probably did!” (Not quite Geoff, as ‘Dalts’ rode 130 in points alone).
Harvey (left), Tracey and Geoff Barfoot-Saunt before battle commenced at Bonvilston Photo: Carl Evans“They didn’t take me seriously,” continues Geoff, “So I gave the Guildings – who were up the road – a ring and went to work for them when I left school. After that, I moved to Grafton country to work for Tim Brown, who was their Master of Hounds. He had a yard full of hunters and pointers and I looked after the pointers and did farm work. I rode tractors, combine harvesters and horses! I had my first ride at Newton Bromswold, and it took me four years to have my first winner – Mount Oliver for Jackie Guilding in the Ledbury Members. I remember riding at (former Welsh track) Llantarnam. It was like trying to put a point-to-point course in our yard (Mackenzie & Selby described it as, ‘Should not be tolerated, but has usual informal atmosphere and joke stewarding!’) I rode in Wales a lot – all their courses are unique.”
Geoff’s best season was 2002/03, with four winners between the flags and six under rules. “I can’t put my finger on why,” he admits. “I had lots of rides in Hunter Chases and was riding several times a week – it was close to being a professional!” As for the best horses he rode, “Mixsterthetrixster under rules and Nether Gobions and Well Ted for Dick Baimbridge in points.” Geoff tells me how the connection with the legendary handler came about. “I happened to be in the right place at the right time,” he confirms “I was standing next to Dick when Alison Dare broke her leg. He asked, ‘How are we going to cope?’ and I replied, ‘I can come and ride for you.’” Geoff also won on the classy chaser Escartefigue, laughing as he recalls, “He used to run in Gold Cups and Grand Nationals, so should have been able to win points blindfolded!”
While Harvey – sponsored for the first time this season by audio-visual technology company One Vision – has yet to break his duck after 16 rides in points plus one on the flat, he’s gaining plenty of experience, schooling for Tom and Gina Ellis every Saturday, following stints with Richard Hughes, Richard Newland, and a trip to Ireland last summer to work for Henry de Bromhead. “They do things differently over there,” says Harvey “Here, the approach to training is more task-focused, getting
the horses fit and ready, but they’re more relaxed and chilled in Ireland.” Harvey has already ridden for several other trainers but hopes that his first winner will be for his parents. “Ideally on Mrs Jones – she’s my favourite,” he admits, “But more likely on The Golden Rebel.”
Before riding in points, Harvey – like so many of his contemporaries (think Ed Vaughan) was a successful pony racer. “I rode in the Dingle Derby (Ireland’s leading pony contest) just before Covid,” he recalls. “And was meant to be going back, having been offered rides for a big stable, when lockdown hit. My first winner had been at Cheltenham, on The Buggy Girl – I’d only had a handful of rides before that day, and we went on to be third in the national pony club championships, which I won the year after with Shoot The Stars, a good horse but quirky… definitely not push button!”
Harvey’s ambitions in the saddle are “To carry on pointing for a couple of seasons, hopefully ride a few winners and maybe win some kind of (novice) riders title I’d like to ride over hurdles and fences and look to get my Cat B licence (to ride against professionals) – I’ve already got my Cat A –
when I’ve had enough rides. After that, we’ll see where it goes.” As for Geoff’s future, he admits that, “The plan is than I hand over to Harvey and I’ll probably retire when he gets his Category B licence (so he can ride Tracey’s horses against professionals) even though I’m not ready to stop yet.”
While Tracey didn’t race-ride herself, she show jumped and evented and admits, “I got into racing by fluke! I had a thoroughbred eventer, Father Jack, that I couldn’t hold one side of Geoff rode it, they were second first time out and I was hooked. Her training career has spanned over 20 years and, as well as Bay Watch – “An unassuming little horse, kind and sweet,” she cites Mixsterthetrixster as a favourite, explaining his name with, “He was more than cheeky. On our second day, it took me over two hours to get on him! I never came off, and was never hurt, but he was a challenge Yet Harvey could sit on him as a baby!”
Tracey has three pointers to race this season – Macs Legend, Mrs Jones and the ex-Julie Wadland and Ben Case The Golden Rebel. “We bought him in May,” she tells me “He’s had some time off – he’s accident-prone – but is back in work now and will run in
Novice Riders races for Harvey, then may go summer jumping with him. Mrs Jones has had a quiet time since Dunsmore but may go to Cothelstone, where the 2m4f trip will suit. Macs Legend has won on soft and heavy but likes better ground. He’s 16 now, and still a few weeks off a run.” She also has an unraced 6yo great-grandson of 1972 Cheltenham Gold Cup heroine Glencaraig Lady, but confirms, “He’ll take time and may not run this season.”
The family’s facilities include 14 stables, a sand gallop, a deep sand lunging ring and turnout paddocks, as well as schooling fences. “We also work them on setaside,” confirms Tracey, “And can go up to Stinchcombe and the North Nibley monument nearly all the way off-road. We do most of the work here, but sometimes go to Tom George’s or to Lambourn to gallop.”
The fourth member of the team is Georgina Marwood, from nearby Dursley, who balances her studies at Cheltenham College
with working at Cosy Farm one day a week. “I’d like to ride in races – it would give me an adrenalin buzz – but am not sure I’m cut out for it,” she laughs. “But I’ve got a thoroughbred – Mason Jar, who raced for Richard Newland – at home and am doing Retraining of Racehorses with him.”
Their respective careers covered, talk turns to the family’s views on the sport. Geoff in particular is known for his stridently expressed views on the ‘Pointing Forum’ noticeboard, although he’s been quiet recently “Life’s not long enough to have the time to post,” he smiles when I ask why he stopped contributing. “I sort of became addicted, a bit like I am to smoking – but that doesn’t take up as much time! Besides (he shows me a phone that looks like something Noah would have used)… I don’t have a smartphone!”
“The day hunter certificates were centralised was the beginning of the end for pointing,” opines Geoff “It interfered
with local hunt politics, p*ssed off a lot of people who did things for their hunt and point-to-point and separated the two sports. For example, local farmers would always get a free certificate for their horse – now they have their land trashed… and have to pay! Now you don’t have to take your pointers hunting – although we do on occasions – hunting people don’t know the riders and trainers and have fewer friends with pointers, so have less reason to go The gap’s getting wider and wider, and meetings are struggling for volunteers – from gate staff, to fence attendants, to litter pickers.”
Harvey nods agreement with his father, before turning his attention to schooling trials. “They’re a really good idea, he affirms, as they bring horses into the sport. However, it was £75 per horse at Garthorpe, which is 50% more than to enter a race Reducing the cost would bring in even more horses.”
Tracey’s first thought is based on her experience as a steward. “I’d instigate a shadowing scheme for experienced stewards to bring on the next generation,” she suggests. “If you’re not an ex-jockey or trainer, or have been out of the game, stewarding can be intimidating. And how do you bring in young people? You need to have confidence, and shadowing someone who’s been doing it for 30 years would give you that. Plus, two pairs of eyes are better than one!”
As so often before I leave, I ask the age-old question of what the family love about their sport. Geoff answers on behalf of Tracey and Harvey “It’s the buzz and the social life. Tracey and I are married because of pointing, Harvey’s grown up with it. It’s a way of life…”
