Photo: Alun SedgmoreDespite the continued spell of wet weather descimating the majority of point to point fixtures there were still two high class performances during the week.
Macklin (126), despite being rather weak in the market, ran out a comfortable winner on his Hunterchase debut at Taunton. Waited with in rear, he made steady headway from the twelfth to hit the front at the last and quickly draw clear of the front running Lieutenant Rooco. The runner-up was rated in the mid 150’s under rules and together with fourth placed Lalor gives the form a degree of solidity Macklin looks destined for more success under Rules, particularly as he is relatively lightly raced having suffered training setbacks in his younger days.
Connections have done a great job in re-vitalising Grace a Vous Enki (122) this season and the gelding remained unbeaten in four outings when coming home twenty lengths clear of his rivals in the Open. Its was not all plain sailing however as he jumped markedly to the left at several obstacles throughout the contest and the consequent forfeiture of ground meant he only asserted from three out. He probably deserves a crack at a Hunterchase and its worth noting that he wasn’t disgraced at Cheltenham over hurdles back in 2021. Runner4-uop here Hung Jury (110) ran an odd sort of race, jumping moderately and being well behind until making significant headway over the last half mile He seems one that runs to his own agenda but may be worth a spin at a marathon distance.
The weekend’s sole surviving points meeting at Larkhill began with what looked an above average young horse maiden won in taking style by Kykorock (78) With just six runners, the majority of which were making their racecourse debuts, the field were never going to set off at a lung-bursting gallop and the resultant figures were sound (once weight for age is added in) more than outstanding, but several took the eye in the paddock beforehand – not least the winner A strong sort, his jumping was a little novicey at times but given a patient ride by Zac Baker he stalked the principals before taking advantage of the jumping errors of his rivals at the second last to quicken to the front. He drew well clear on the run-in and won quite impressively He’s a probable for the sales now and was clearly a shrewd purchase as a store previously having been obtained for just over 11,000 guineas. An interesting note from a predominantly Flat pedigree is that Kykorock’s sire Ballingarry, winner of the Prix Saint Cloud and two major Flat races at Arlington, was a half-brother to Grimthorpe Chase winner Father Sky.

SUNDAY 25 FEBRUARY 2024
By Bob BracherLarkhill hosted the only surviving meeting in the country following the continuing waterlogging seen in virtually all of England and Wales. Even Larkhill which can absorb the rain is showing the effects of the longwet spell with those with longer memories struggling to remember how wet and trodden the paddock currently is compared to previous seasons. The majority of the South and West Wilts meeting was held in dry conditions, but the rain appeared after the Mixed Open with conditions worsening when the two Bumper races were run. The highlights of the meeting were Grace a Vous Enki continuing his love affair with Larkhill as part of a riding double for James King, an emotional winner in the Restricted, two very promising Maiden winners and two home bred winning the two divisions of the Bumper
The Goffs sponsored four and five year old Maiden race, transferred from the abandoned Kingston Blount meeting,
featured representatives from four leading yards and after Maxiboy Dagrostis, ridden by his trainer Bradley Gibbs, had led for much of the race the complexion changed after the second last. Kykorock ridden by Zak Baker, and Mister Carson the mount of Jack Andrews duelled approaching the last but Zak describing his charge as ‘like a missile’ soon drew clear on the run in to record an impressive victory Picked up by trainer Fran Nimmo for 14K Euro at the Tattersalls Ireland May 2023 store sale he has become very straight forward and had been showing up well at home and connections were hopeful of a good performance. He is next likely to be seen at a forthcoming sale
The Pat Awdry Memorial Conditions race was at the mercy of I’m Spellbound ridden by Jack Andrews, who had drawn clear of his eight rivals and only had the last fence to negotiate. However this proved to be the combination’s undoing and their fall allowed Boss Man Fred ridden by
James King, to secure a fortuitous victory
Previously trained by Dan Skelton with whom he had won four Hurdle races he suffered a tendon injury in April 2022 and a long period on the sidelines was likely Louis Gill who runs a video production company, was carrying out filming at Dan’s yard and the gelding was recommended to him by Dan as a prospective pointer if he was prepared to give him time Louis who heads the Cotswold Stars Partnership moved him to Max Comley during last summer and was delighted with the victory
The sixteen runner Maiden sponsored by Woolley and Wallis, proved to be a battle between Carryonaway ridden by Izzie Marshall and Catchim the mount of Tommie O’Brien but with the added assistance of a loose horse on the run in Carryonaway showed a good turn of foot on the run in to record a two lengths victory Bought by Joe Hill and placed at Tabley last season, he was intended to then be sold but failed the
The excellent Grace A Vous Enki (James King)vet and subsequently was bought by Joe’s father Alan. Now owned by long term owner Heather Munn and Alan, he was another intended runner at Kingston Blount close to where Heather lives but paying her first visit to Larkhill the grey gelding made this a trip she will not forget. Izzie did remarkably well to survive a blunder at the last open ditch and with this victory is now only one winner behind Gina Andrews in the Ladies Riders Championship
Grace A Vous Enki easily won the Lycetts sponsored Mixed Open race and in doing this recorded his fourth victory this season at Larkhill including the dead heat in the Coronation Gold Cup Despite jumping left-handed as he has done on all his previous visits he was never troubled over the final fences with Hung Jury ridden by Toby McCain-Mitchell finishing a remote second. He has been a revelation since dropping back into points but his trainer Nicky Sheppard confirmed that there is no intention of a return to racing under Rules and that the goal this season is the Lady Dudley Cup which Clive and Joan Hitchings would dearly love to win. On the basis of the form he has shown to date he looks a serious contender for that race
The Wessex Internet sponsored Restricted race provided the best finish of the day with Douglas Longbottom just prevailing over Chabichou Dupoitou ridden by James King by ½ length. Ridden by Martin ‘Fly’ McIntyre
for Catherine Mitchell Fly explained that ‘I did not want to hit the front too early’ and he timed his challenge to perfection. Bought out of Harry Ryall’s stable after last season, he had been runner up in both of his Restricted races this season and was not winning out of turn. Catherine explained that he had been bought for her husband John to ride which he does at Bea Coward’s stable once a week. It was an emotional victory for connections as not only had Catherine ridden a winner on Wellington Brown at this meeting in 1994 but also that the stable had won this race in 2023 with Happy Day Emery who sadly they had lost at home before he made his seasonal debut.
There was somewhat of a surprise winner in the Martin Haskett Agricultural Contactors Ladies Conditions race for riders who had ridden fewer than 20 career winners. After long term leader Mix of Clover unseated his rider, Isabel Lovat, at the third last the race developed into a match between L’Air Du Vent, ridden by Megan Bevan and Nickolson, the mount of Amber JacksonFennell with the former staying on stronger to record a first training success for Jemma Sargent who is one of the Barn Managers for Joe Tizzard’s National Hunt yard This was unexpected as the gelding is not known to appreciate softer going as all of his best form is on a faster surface. Jemma said ‘I look after him in one of Joe’s satellite yards and do all of the work with him in my break’ She added that she has not resumed
her riding career following a fall but was very pleased for her friend Megan Bevan who works for another National Hunt trainer Harry Fry
The rain had started to fall in time for the two divisions of the Bumpers sponsored by the JRL Group with the first division going to the once raced Swingingonthesteel trained and ridden by Heidi Stevens for owner/breeder Paul Nicholas from Exmoor He stayed on well to beat Is Our Otis, the mount of Tommie O’Brien, by half a length. A delighted Paul advised that ‘I bred the gelding and the dam who is a half-sister to Tempestatefloresco who won points for me before winning 5 races under Rules including the Summer Cup at Uttoxeter’ Heidi who works for trainer Victor Dartnall three days a week has seven pointers in her care for this season at Brayford on Exmoor
Theseconddivisionwaswoninmoredecisive fashion with Pyleigh Master showing a good turn of foot to draw clear from Dave’s Sister ridden by Toby McCain-Mitchell. The winner, a smart looking son of Blue Bresil, was bred by Robert and Tigger Pudd from their mare Pyleigh Lady who won two Hurdles for them. Ridden by Ella Herbison the gelding is a half brother to the prolific Go Steady the winner of eight races for Dan Skelton. He will be one to watch out for when he takes on fences in due course
Much has been written about the riding exploits of Will Biddick the most successful jockey in Point to Point history Eight time Champion Men’s Point to Point rider with a current tally of 576 winners pointing and a further 38 in Hunter Chases; a dream win over the Aintree fences on Famous Clermont to take last season’s Foxhunters and back to back wins of the Punchestown Champion Hunter Chase on Caid du Berlais for Rose Loxton but it is his 2021 training feat in the Cheltenham Festival version with the fragile Porlock Bay that clearly means most to the multi-talented Cornishman. And now his training career is proving that he is every bit as astute in this sphere too having saddled just 10 runners this season resulting in an impressive 8 winners, a purple patch that is bordering on Willie Mullins territory!
The son of a farmer, his first winner as a young 17 year old jockey was at Axe Vale on Let’s Fly trained by Ross Oliver He happily admits that he didn’t exactly excel at school and was always destined for a career with horses. Moving to Venetia Williams, he lodged with fellow riders, Sam Thomas and the late Liam Treadwell, and explained, “they took me under their wing and taught me so much. It was like me being a young horse schooling with older ones, I couldn’t help but improve.” After riding a lot as a claiming amateur and then turning professional for a while, he still returned to his family farm in Cornwall to help his father every summer It was during these summers that he grafted on the farm and also learnt to break in horses, a skill that he is highly respected for with several trainers including Champion trainer Paul Nicholls.
Combining the breaking and pre-training business alongside his now burgeoning training enterprise, Will received a call from owner, John Studd, who wished to move one of his horses back from a successful career in France. The
talented but fragile Porlock Bay was to provide a fairy-tale occasion for both owner and trainer An early success in a point was followed by a surprise defeat by Sametegal in a Hunter Chase at Wincanton Several experts were heard to remark that a good run in the Cheltenham Foxhunters was now out of the question the horse having patently failed to stay on the soft surface at the Somerset course Will however had other thoughts and explained, “Due to the BHA rules during Covid, amateurs were unable to ride and so I employed Lorcan Williams to ride the horse on this occasion as I felt out of any of the professional jockeys, he rode most like me In the race though, Lorcan admitted that he had a moment when he decided to take a pull in the race, as he felt that’s what I would have done, and it was probably at the wrong moment!” Undeterred Will thought as long as the horse saw the race out, he’d win. At Cheltenham in a nail-biting finish and the closest of the entire meeting, Lorcan and Porlock Bay did indeed see the race out prevailing by a short-head in front of the eerily quiet stands. Will credits that win with being a
turning point in his training career and certainly the biggest thrill so far. His gratitude to John Studd is immense and indeed reciprocated as following the retirement of Porlock Bay, John immediately had a worthy successor in the shape of Macklin.
Following the success at the Festival, Will was contacted by Rupert Swallow keen to buy horses to syndicate Although going rather over budget at the sales, Rupert struck gold purchasing two, both under the newly formed Pendil Partnership aimed at younger racegoers at a very affordable yearly cost – www.thependilpartnership.com The first, Il Pino initially won at Chaddesley Corbett under the care of Will before being sent to Paul Nicholls where he has won again over hurdles at Wincanton. His other purchase was the mare Regatta de Blanc who he has kept with Will. She impressed last season winning twice at Larkhill but this season has shown considerable improvement to win not only the Coronation Cup in a dead heat but also a competitive Hunter Chase at Taunton to remain
unbeaten for her large and enthusiastic group of owners. Macklin too has shown improvement this year winning first at Milborne St Andrew easily brushing aside the well-fancied Highway Jewel before also taking a decent Hunter Chase at Taunton last week much to the delight of his owner
Much of this recent success could be down to a change of yards when Will took the opportunity to re-locate to a new base at Queen Camel courtesy of father-in-law, Rupert Nuttall. Set right in the heart of Blackmore and Sparkford Vale country, a large airy barn houses both those in training and the youngsters in for breaking and pre-training After putting in a round sand gallop (and with further plans to put in a 4 furlong gallop), Will realised that his horses would need to acclimatise to using flatter ground and with this in mind resisted training them up the steep hills at Ditcheat before the move was completed. His close relationship with Paul Nicholls too is paramount and has had the biggest influence on his training methods explaining he still regularly goes to Paul for advice and support.
This season the results have been spectacular with (at the time of writing) only two of his horses not winning and these have included two Hunter chases and a Coronation Cup as well as several nice youngsters including No Drama This End who won by an impressive 23 lengths at Badbury Rings this month. He was fulsome in his praise for his staff that includes the multi-tasking, Millie Orttewell who has been with him for five years employed as secretary/box-driver/nanny, Head Girl Georgie Lock, Sarah Gould, Alice Stevens and Jodie Bennett. In addition he has three Novice
Riders, Fred Philipson-Stow, Rian Corcoran and Alex Ingram who all get coaching from former jockey Roddi Greene on a weekly basis. Will explained “I like to give young riders a chance and get a lot of satisfaction from watching them improve although they have to work hard to get the rides. But I get a lot of satisfaction in seeing the progression of both the young riders and the young horses.”
Married to International show-jumper Harriet, they have two sons, Archie and Oliver and while Will is still riding at the very top of his game, he also has his eye on the future and is keen to invest in more young horses to bring on for sale A full National Hunt licence however has been ruled out with Will saying “Pointing has been so good to me and I would rather give back to the sport and while my job is to get winners, I prefer to run horses locally rather than travelling all over the country and
so I spend time to pick the races and courses which will most suit the horses. In fact I often find I am crossing the line on one and already planning where I will run it next as I pull up.”
During lockdown Will was asked what his ambition was to which he replied “have Porlock Bay win the Cheltenham Foxhunters!” With that firmly cemented on his CV, it is apparent that any goals are there to be achieved and whilst on a numbers game he may not be challenging yet for the title of Champion trainer to go alongside the many awards he has won as a rider, this is a trainer who is looking to the future With both the horses and young riders that he is bringing to the game and educating, this future as a trainer, looks to be every bit as exciting as his riding career if recent results are anything to go by Check out www.willbiddick.co.uk
