ON THE CLOCK The first two months of the season, have, at least in terms of speed figures, failed to unearth a future potential champion. Time Leader clocked the season’s best figure to date when spreadeagling the field at Badbury but then disappointed badly in the Chaddesley slop and with a history of ‘bursting’ now has it all to prove, whilst there have also been defeats for other proven fast timers such as Sine Nominee, Fairly Famous and most notably Famous Clermont. We hope therefore that with the start of Hunter Chase season almost upon us and the beginning of activity in the Midland and Yorkshire Areas - that the next six weeks will prove more illuminating. There continue to be some noteworthy performances from the maiden contingent however- and there were another two interesting events at the weekend. Ex-Irish Artiste D’Ainay (103) was strongly supported to get off the mark at Horseheath on the back of some useful efforts over hurdles but ultimately had to give sway close home to the younger, Alan Hill trained Paul Manate (95). The winner had shown promise over an inadequate trip at Edgcote last spring and was well suited by the uphill finish here -in contrast perhaps to Tom Ellis’s charge whose best form has come over the minimum trip. A drop back in distance should see Artiste D’Ainay find compensation. Down at Larkhill, Gasmani (97) landed something of a gamble when striding well clear of the equally promising Money from America (93). The winner had shown little relatively little in two bumpers last season but has a pedigree that shouts stamina being a half-brother to the Eider Chase placed Innisfree Lad and winning three mile chasers Cyclop and Credo. All three siblings were rated in the 130’s and Gasmani looks a fine prospect. Gasmani’s speed figure puts him into the top five of maiden winners this season. Bearing this in mind its worth noting that as it takes, on average, a performance of around 98 to land a Restricted, the following list of other fast timing maiden performers can be followed with some confidence over the next few weeks. LARKHILL RACING CLUB SUNDAY 31 DECEMBER 2023 By Bob Bracher

The loss of the Harkaway Club meeting at Chaddesley Corbett to the weather allowed owners and keepers to switch their charges to Larkhill and at least three of the winners on a very competitive card would have run at the Worcestershire course. Even Larkhill, which can absorb a lot of rain, was at its most testing and several fancied horses including the Aintree Foxhunters winner from 2023 found the conditions stretching. During the day it remained mostly dry with a full rainbow across the course on two occasions before the heavens opened for the final race. It was another good day for James King with a riding double, two highly promising four-year-olds to follow and two quality ex steeplechasers showing a revival of their form. Deise Aba was an easy winner in the colours of the late Trevor Hemmings in the opening Conditions race ridden by Zac Baker and trained by Fran Nimmo. Previously trained by Philip Hobbs and the winner of three steeplechases and placed in a cross-country race at Cheltenham in January 2023, he had

been transferred to Fran’s stable in the hope that this would reinvigorate his enthusiasm. He did not enjoy his opening point to point but this time held up by Zac he was in command in the second last and had twelve lengths in hand at the winning post. Fran explained that ‘he needs better ground to show his best form’ and the drop in class from his rules races helped. Fran took him hunting with the Bicester and he was an interesting ride particularly over a set of rails. Zac was delighted to have won the race which was run in memory of Godfrey Maundrell, with whom he had a good association at the start of his riding career and in particular on Arthurian Legend on whom he won six races. Viroflay maintained his unbeaten record at Larkhill when holding off the challenges of Champagne Noir, ridden by Ellie Holder, and Viva Lavilla ridden by Shannon Holmes, in the Ladies Open race. Ridden as usual by his keeper Olive Nicholls, for her father Paul and John Bolton, he decided to lead after the second fence and despite the efforts of

#gopointing 12

his rivals none could get past him. Described by his proud rider as much stronger than last season, he is another who appreciates better ground and his next outing is likely to be a potential repeat of his Coronation Gold Cup success from 2023. He might contest a Novice Hunter Chase later in the season but the going will be critical for this. David Dennis introduced an impressive fencing debutant in the form of Gasmani, a four-year-old gelding by Getaway in the Open Maiden race. A big field of sixteen horses faced the starter but once James King set sail for home from the second last there was never any doubt about the result. Bought by David as a 3-year-old store he had a couple of runs in point-to-point Bumpers last season, showing some promise in his second outing. Described by his owner and keeper as still babyish and green, he hopes that he might be able to match the achievements of his half brother Cyclop, who is David’s stable star, having already won eleven races in his career. James who schooled him last week reported

Repeating his triumph from the New Forest meeting in December he has enjoyed his move away from National Hunt racing and the different training regime at Nicky Sheppard’s yard. Despite the presence of the Aintree Foxhunters winner Famous Clermont, Nicky explained that ‘you should not be frightened off by one rival’ as advised to her husband Matt by the late Mercy Rimell and this was fully vindicated. Future plans will be decided by Clive and Joan Hitchings so we will have to wait for this news. He would have run at Chaddesley which is much closer to where the Hitchings live. for the rest of the season. The Novice Riders race was an excellent example of the success of owner/riders who are still the backbone of our sport with the first three places filled by horses trained for their owner/rider or family members. Tara Storm was a revelation last season for Eve Hobbs and it looked like the partnership were going to start their current campaign with another victory. However, A Jet of Our Own ridden by Fred Philipson-Stow had other ideas and delaying his challenge until the last minute he swept past Tara Storm in the shadow of the post. Owned by Robert Fear and Andrew Ham and trained by Chris Barber, he had been sourced by Ed Bailey initially as a foal and subsequently after his first point to point outing in Ireland, but had been unable to secure a purchase as the price was too high. After his rather disappointing last run in Ireland Ed tried again and this time was successful to be able to acquire the fouryear-old gelding and Chris persuaded friends Robert and Andrew to take him under their ownership. Whilst Robert is well known to the pointing community and is currently the Course Inspector for Larkhill, Andrew from Bradford on Avon was having his first point to point runner although he explained that

REPORTS THURLOW, HORSEHEATH SUNDAY 31 DECEMBER 2023 By Mike Ashby

A beaming Keith Loads and Kate Bowling welcome Tigerbythetail into the winner’s enclosure Photo: Neale Blackburn

Horseheath racecourse hosted the opening meeting of the new, East Anglian season, on the last day of the old year, with several exciting finishes served up for the large holiday attendance to enjoy. It was particularly good to see some of the stalwarts of the East Anglia scene thoroughly and enthusiastically enjoying ownership success, in some thrilling races witnessed during the afternoon. Owned by ‘The Whiskey & Water Partnership’, Ragnor Lodbrok’s has a model consistency form record which was further enhanced with the Mixed Open success, over the favourite Fairly Famous. Alex Chadwick is a significant team member of James and Jenny Owen’s Newmarket stable and feels he “knows Ragnor Lodbrok now and all his quirks “ and was confident he stays as the pairing bided their time before overhauling the favourite who had taken up the running, three fences out. Owner Keith Load’s presence at an East Anglian fixture is always entertaining and he looks, with his partner Kate, to have plenty of interesting horses to relish watching this season. All four of his horses saddled were placed with two victorious. Tigerbythetail, trained by Tom Ellis, won a match race against Back Bar for the Ladies Conditions contest and Gina Andrews, who had the ride, suggested afterwards that a Fakenham Hunter ‘Chase could be a target for the progressive gelding, who has now registered six wins in points. Trojan Du Berlais, trained by Andrew Pennock, won the Maiden Conditions event, in Load’s colours, with a front-running success under Paddy Barlow. Pennock was particularly pleased with all his horses’s performances, during the afternoon, highlighting “a tweak” in their feed had produced them in better visual condition, in the lead up to the new season. Paddy was landing his first winner for the trainer and decided “to take the lead, from the start, and keep going” which proved to be sound tactics and was fairly confident that he still had the measure of his nearest pursuer, The Borobudur, who failed to get his undercarriage down, when falling at the last obstacle.

The Open Maiden went to the Alan Hill trained Paul Manate ridden by Dale Peters, snatching victory for the longtime leader Ask Carla, by a head in the closest finish of the day. Ask Carla was jumping efficiently, in the lead with the favourite Artiste D’ Ainay, held back by Jack Andrews but Peters, on the eventual winner, was always ready to pounce and was confident of seeing out the trip and so it proved. Paul Manate’s (or Bojo as his known in the yard from the PM initials!) only previous outing was over a shorter trip, which slightly caught him out at Edgcote last season, but connections were certain the three miles would suit him better. The opening race of the day resulted in Mitchouka and Charlie Case taking the prize with a strong run from the last. Having finished 2nd at Larkhill in late November, connections could have returned to the same venue but it proved beneficial to take their chance at Horseheath. Case was delighted with the way his mount “warmed up as the race progressed after jumping slowly to start with and then make steady headway up the finishing straight” He felt they were always comfortable to challenge the favourite All Is True, on the run-in and score by 1½ lengths.

#gopointing 14

The biggest field of the day saw Imperial Esprit, partnered by Keagan Kirkby, cosily beat seven other rivals in the Novice Riders’ contest. Seven of the starters were all in a pack, taking the open ditch for the last time and when entering the straight Imperial Esprit and In Arrears were vying for the lead. However, Kirkby, who is based in Somerset with Paul Nicholls, had the confidence of his mount’s two previous outings to ease the favourite home by 3 lengths, with Jonjoela taking the runner-up placing. The Restricted was another close affair when Iskandar Pecos and Huw Edwards narrowly defeated Coolagh Park by a length. Edwards felt that “the two earlier outings of the season had sharpened his mount up” and had justified the long journey for the North-West. Edwards himself was riding his first winner at the course, which he found in perfect order, considering the “soft” conditions, as did many of the other jockeys. If this a foretaste of the action to come, for the rest of the season, bring it on! Come racing in East Anglia with the next meeting at Ampton on Sunday January 14th.
