FOREWORD Greetings from the Ministry! As we enter the second half of the year, we look with pride at the strides the country has made in the tourism sector. As a Ministry, we are taking efforts to ensure that the National Tourism Blueprint (NTB 2030) is implemented. The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) 2018 report positioned Kenya as the third-largest tourism economy in SubSaharan Africa after South Africa and Nigeria. The aggressive route expansions by our National Carrier, Kenya Airways, through its non-stop flights to Cape Town, Mauritius, New York and Geneva, coupled with the increase in the number of high-end hotels opening up in Nairobi, have all led to the increase of tourists visiting the country - reinforcing Kenya’s attractiveness to the leisure travellers. Kenya’s natural landscapes are deemed by travellers to be extremely competitive when compared to other international destinationsss. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) partnered with Walt Disney to showcase Kenya in the Lion King movie, which recently jointly premiered both locally and internationally. It was unveiled to audiences in the USA, France and the UK to exhibit the diverse tourism products Magical Kenya has to offer. This movie continues to open up new markets for us, while promoting Kenya as a film destination. I appreciate the efforts of our sister Ministry of Sports, Culture and The Arts to promote our country through international sports platforms. The successful Safari Rally held in Naivasha should hopefully guarantee Kenya’s re-entry into the World Rally Championship. This is necessary for profiling our nation as a sporting destination. I had the pleasure of hosting Enda Sportswear, a company making Kenyan running shoes using local materials and creating jobs for our youth. I congratulate them for promoting Magical Kenya. This Ministry has been spearheading a multi-agency team tasked with regeneration and beautification of the Mama Ngina Waterfront project, which aims at transforming Mombasa into a leading and competitive world-class destination. The project should be ready by the end of August this year. Kenya is a both a business and diplomatic hub, due to its strategic position in the middle of Africa. In the last few months, President Uhuru Kenyatta hosted both Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio and Mauritius Acting President Paramasivum Pillay Vyapoory. They discussed ways of promoting tourism and boosting trade. Recently, the Botswana President Eric Mokgweetsi Masisi was in Kenya for a three-day State visit seeking to enhance bilateral co-operation.

at the Nairobi National Park, that calls for the listing of the African Elephant in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)at the 18th Conference of the Parties (CoP18) following the dwindling numbers of the elephants due to poaching. This is a two-pronged Awareness Promotion about the CITES CoP18 meeting, in partnership with Kenya Airways (KQ) and Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), to spearhead the global fight against trade in ivory. The ‘Ivory Trade is a Rip-Off’ promotion involves the production of a limited edition keepers KQ boarding pass, with a QR code which, once scanned, directs one to more information on this campaign hosted on the Ministry’s website. I urge fellow Kenyans and travelers going through JKIA to spread the message that Elephants & Ivory Should Never Be Ripped Apart! Kenya is a land of endless possibilities, full of magical experiences. Keep reading Go Places™ to find out more and Tembea Kenya. I wish the readers an exciting August-September 2019

FOREWORD As we come to the 2nd half of 2019, Kenya continues to receive positive local and global recognition from various endorsements and successes which continue to showcase the destinations beauty and spur the growth of the tourism sector. We continue to enhance and provide visibility for our tourism products I am optimistic that with the different strategies we will continue to enhance our current tourism experiences. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) hosted an exclusive VIP Lion King premiere at the Century Imax located at the Garden City Mall. This movie will raise the country’s profile and amplify its brand equity, especially with media campaigns to promote Kenya. Kenya is known globally as the home of safari but we want to continue showing diverse tourism products which give visitors an array of options ranging from culture to wellness. I am very proud to have represented KTB at the 2019 World Travel Awards Africa& Indian Ocean at the Gala Ceremony in Mauritius. I am also very proud of the awards we scooped at the ceremony. KICC was awarded Africa’s leading meeting and conference centre. Diani brought home Africa’s leading beach destination for the 6th time. Nairobi was also awarded Africa’s leading business destination. KTB bagged Africa’s leading tourist board award for the 7th time. Through our China Tour, we have continued to sensitize the Chinese travel market. We want to walk away from the notion that Kenya is a seasonal safari destination. We are working towards positioning Kenya as an ‘AllYear Magic’ destination. Tourist arrivals into Kenya from China have been growing steadily over the last five years. In the financial year 2018/19 the Chinese market contributed 3.8% of the arrivals, it closed at 76,826 visitors. We hope to reap more from the market as we continue to unveil other marketing programs to woo travelers.

12 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

As I conclude, I am happy to note that various stakeholders are working towards conserving our environment which is an essential part of our tourism sustainability initiatives. Recently President Uhuru Kenyatta announced a ban on single-use plastic in all the protected areas such as the National Parks, beaches, forests and conservation areas. This is the right step geared towards sustainable tourism. As we continue to chart the way forward, we urge various stakeholders to be a part of the tourism success. We appreciate the efforts of publications such as Go Places ™ as they continue to immensely contribute towards promotion of tourism business. Keep reading to explore and travel Magical Kenya. DR . FOREWORD Jambo and a warm Kenyan welcome to MagicalKenya, the home of Safari. The World Travel Awards Africa and the Indian Ocean 2019 were held in Mauritius in June. Kenya bagged several awards including ‘Africa’s Leading Airline Business Class and Economy Class’ – Kenya Airways, ‘Africa’s Leading Business Travel Destination’ – Nairobi, ‘Africa’s Leading Destination’ – Kenya, and ‘Africa’s Leading Meetings & Conference Centre’ – Kenyatta International Convention Centre. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) bagged the ‘Africa’s Leading Tourist Board’ award for the 7th time. Congratulations to all the winners. As a Country, Kenya is banking on filming as one of the initiatives to enhance our destination’s visibility and awareness. As a destination, Kenya is endowed with diverse tourism products and experiences which provide visitors with an array of options. These are some of the tourism offerings that inspired the locations featured in several scenes in Disney’s remake of the animated classic ‘The Lion King’. KTB was very privileged to host in Nairobi in July the first screening of the movie in Africa. It is from movies like this that the world takes time to give special attention to MagicalKenya. The movie showcases the unrivalled beauty and abundance of landscapes, scenery and wildlife that our Country has to offer. Locations featured in the movie included Hell’s Gate, the Masai Mara, Chyulu Hills, Suguta Valley, Samburu and Rosewood in Aberdares National Park. The movie will go a long way in raising Kenya’s profile, amplifying our brand equity and further endorsing MagicalKenya as a filming destination. The Kenya Tourism Board embarked on a tour of China’s major cities of Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou as we target more visitors from this important tourism source market. The Kenya Trade forum roadshow themed ‘Adventure Tour’ was attended by over 110 traders from key online travel agencies including CTrip, Fliggy and Tuniu, as well as key traditional travel agencies and bespoke travel agencies. Through this event KTB sought to change the myth that Kenya is a seasonal safari destination and instead position Kenya as a year-round destination. KTB carried out intensive product training sessions to the Chinese Travel agencies in each of the 3 provinces. In a recent visit to Tanzania, President Uhuru Kenyatta called on East Africans to unite so as to develop a

14 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

prosperous region. This message presents us with a great marketing opportunity to improve the travelling culture in East Africa and increase cross boarder tourism within the East Africa region. We are one people with a shared heritage and a common destiny. The 13th Edition of Routes Africa 2019, an intra-Africa air connectivity development forum, will take place in Mombasa at the PrideInn Paradise Beach Resort from 8–10 December 2019. It has attracted over 250 delegates from across the globe. The Routes Africa conference brings together airline leaders and C-Suite speakers who will discuss the future of aviation within Africa and the most pressing issues facing the industry. ASM Global, the world’s first provider of route development courses, will deliver their Route Development Accreditation course. On behalf of myself and of the entire KTB team, I wish all Go Places™ readers a blessed August/September 2019 season. Enjoy the read and keep traveling MagicalKenya. Jimi Kariuki Chairman, Kenyan Tourism Board

FOREWORD A HEALTHY NATION IS A WEALTHY NATION What does health and wellness mean to you as a Kenyan? Are you well balanced from mind, body and spirit? How is your health and wellness as a Kenyan impact on the country’s growth? I still subscribe to the old adage that good health is wealth. And it is indeed true that a healthy population is a healthy productive nation. We are living in an era where lifestyle diseases have taken centre stage. According to World Health Organization, diseases linked to lifestyle choices, including diabetes and some cancers, kill 16 million people prematurely each year. The report also indicates that at least 2.8 million adults die each year as a result of being overweight or obese. In addition, 44 per cent of the diabetes burden, 23 per cent of the ischemic heart disease burden (reduced blood supply to the heart due to clogged arteries) and between seven per cent and 41 per cent of certain cancer burdens are attributable to obesity. Overweight and obesity are responsible for various non-communicable diseases that cause high economic costs, human suffering, and low quality of life. Kenya conducts a health survey every 10 years. The last Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) of 2009 showed that the national prevalence of overweight and obesity for women (15–49 years old) in Kenya was 23%. The proportion of overweight and obese women was higher in urban areas than in rural areas, with Nairobi having the highest prevalence of 41%. These statistics are alarming more so in Kenya where a healthy population means a healthy workforce that is a catalyst that powers national development. Better health is central to human happiness and well-being. It also makes an important contribution to economic progress, as healthy populations live longer, are more productive, and save more. Many factors influence health status and a country’s ability to provide quality health services for its people. But good health is not just about access to health facilities. It is also about overall wellness and a long-term commitment to making conscious choices on aspects like diet, physical activity, stress management mechanisms, sleep, brain fitness and emotional wellness. It is a holistic approach that requires concerted efforts to balance the mentioned aspects for a healthy you.

As such, Kenya boasts of many health and wellness centres to enhance general body wellness. The activities include physical exercises, dance sessions like Zumba, Yoga sessions, among others. The Lamu Yoga Festival for instance is an annual event that brings together over 400 participants in a week-long yoga activity which also incorporates a taste of Swahili culture through food, music, dance, among others. Yoga craze is gaining momentum and relevance in the whole country and in particular along the Kenyan Coast where international holidaymakers are flying in to partake Yoga activities. In this year’s event that took place in March, participants came in from as far as Australia, India, South Africa, United Kingdom, USA, Canada and Japan. The event had over 25 teachers, 150 yoga classes, meditations and workshops in Shela, Lamu town and Manda Island. Physical Education (PE) also remains part of school curriculum in both primary and secondary schools to inculcate and encourage physical activities in young ones as they grow up. As Brand Kenya, a healthy population means a lot in terms of building a formidable people resource ready to position the country in all aspects of growth. I would like to urge all Kenyans to embrace healthy lifestyles in their individual aspects and together keep lifestyle diseases at bay. Ag. CEO, Brand Kenya Board Ms Floice Mukabana

TRANQUILITY ON THE TRAILS OF NATURE “The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely, or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy amidst the simple beauty of nature. I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles.”-Anne Frank There’s something hair-rising just being in the presence of the great outdoors, raw and natural as it can be that gets our hearts racing, our minds feeling lighter and our thinking clearer. Nature is food for the body, soul and mind. Sometimes nature is just the right plug for all our spiritual and physical tribulations. The undulating rise and fall of the misty valleys, hills and mountains of the spectacular Aberdare National Park are a sight to behold. Open moorlands, forests characterize the vast park. A deep lush of clean crisp air that hangs around will leave you wanting to question your existence in your other world you are accustomed to noise, eyesore sights and bustle. This piece will lead to into a few gems inside this park. Karuru falls located in the Central moorlands is a splendid plunge of crystal clear waters hundreds of meters below the viewing point. The viewing point is a short hike down the parking area and along the route, stop and take in the incredibly fresh air, rare and amazing sightings of a bud struggling to pop out of a flower, a butterfly seemingly in competition with a colorful bird in a nectar sucking spree. The well bridged streams leading to the view point carry sparkling clean and calm waters. There’s something so subtle about water in motion and the effect it has on a tired spirit. You have to savor it, experience it because no enough words could possibly describe this. Several mountain peaks dot the views around; Chebuswa, Kinangop, Ol Donyo Lesatima, Elephant hill and the twin hills. These are popular with the outdoor lovers. A hike up the trails with friends leading to their different summit points as you vacuum in the fresh air is a great escape from the daily hustle and pollution from the city. If you value solitude and reflection, this would be a great plan away from the addictions of the modern digital space. Delight in soaking your senses in sights and sounds that nature gives freely. Stop and savor the beaming sights of sunrise as she labors to birth yet another brand new day and as the sun goes down, switch into a day dream as you watch her break like a yolky egg as she disappears deep into the yonder horizon. These would be magic for the body, soul and mind beaten up by life that craves for sanity in some far away sane space albeit for a day or two. Nature in itself is therapeutic and nowhere else will you find nature in its pristine state other than Kenya’s National Parks.

16 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

Stay overnight in our modest self-catering accommodation. Set in the moorlands and deep in the quietude of nature are two Fishing Lodge houses that have a capacity of seven people each offering a wild yet homely experience that will leave you rejuvenated and recharged to face life as overwhelming as it can get. The accommodation is set up in such a way that the family unit is well catered for and allows for bonding as you wine and dine in the wild. Such a great distraction from the daily stressors of life. Wake up to the glorious sunrise or a world covered up in mist, grab your breakfast and make your way to an interesting find located in the other end of the park that is rich in Kenya’s history of the fight for her independence. Amongst the slopes and thickets, a huge Fig tree commonly known as the Mugumo tree in the local Kikuyu dialect stands tall. The old tree was used as a secret ‘post office’ by the Mau Mau freedom fighters to hide letters, notes and messages through their agents. In memory and honor of Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi the Mau Mau leader, the Fig tree was eventually named as the Kimathi Post Office. Enjoy views of wildlife, especially elephants moving stealthily in the dense bamboo vegetation. Also present are black rhinos, buffalos, leopards, giant forest hogs, reed bucks, hyenas, wild dogs, elands, warthogs, among others and a stunning variety of birds. The park is also home to the rare mountain bongo antelope. Other activities that you can enjoy are camping, picnicking, trout fishing and so much more. Nature is absolutely breathtaking and captures the universe splendid beauty. Sometimes words don’t do justice to the beauty of a destination unless you travel to it and soak in it. As you tick off your go to places, Aberdare National Park, is a must feature on your list. It’s a ticking time bomb waiting to be detonated and a perfect destination to sit in quietude as you breathe in the gases of nature. As we start the second half of the year, the National Museums of Kenya continue to stay true to the mandate bestowed to us by all Kenyans of safeguarding our cultural and natural heritage. In this issue, we feature more interesting facts about our Museums across the country. We highlight Rabai Museum which is synonymous with the Cradle of Christianity and Education in Kenya. This is where the first church was established in Kenya as well as the first Dictionary of Swahili was written. We are happy to highlight Kenya’s rich heritage in collaboration with our partners who we forever remain grateful for supporting us as we promote our rich historical, cultural and natural heritage. Through this support, the German Embassy in Kenya has signed a contract with NMK for 60,000 Euros to rehabilitate Krapf House/cottage and convert it into a community center. In addition, Her Excellency, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta opened an exhibition dubbed: ‘Kenya Through the Diplomats Lens’. The photo exhibition showcased a unique collection of photographs taken by members of the diplomatic community in Kenya illustrating the nation’s beauty and diversity. It also features photographs taken by students from Kibera sponsored by the Nikon Photo School.

Karen Blixen Museum Nairobi, Kenya In 1914 Karen Dinesen married her Swedish second cousin, Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke, giving her the title Baroness. The couple moved to Kenya, and celebrated their wedding in Mombasa the day after their arrival. As pioneers to Africa they operated a coffee plantation bought with funds donated to them by their families. The Museum was built in 1912 by Swedish Engineer Ake Sjorgen. Karen and her husband bought the house in 1917 and it became the farm house for their 4500 acre farm of which 600 acres was used for coffee farming. The couple separated in 1921 and were divorced in 1925 with Karen being left to run the coffee plantation as it went through misfortune and mishap. While still in Africa, she met and fell in love with English big game hunter Denys Finch Hatton, with whom she lived from 1926 to 1931. In her memoir Out of Africa he is simply described as a friend. Their intimate, but sometimes volatile relationship, was prematurely ended by Finch Hatton’s death in a plane crash in 1931.

She left the farm in 1931 and returned to Denmark. Blixen earnestly immersed herself in a writing career. In 1934, her authorial debut, Seven Gothic Tales, was published under the pseudonym of “Isak Dinesen,” Her second book, the one that became her best known, was her lyrical and compelling memoir Out of Africa published in 1937. This book, vivid in its description of farming and native peoples; however, lacks historical detail about her time there and the narrative has been described as “though the author was recounting a dream.” An Oscar winning film was shot and named Out of Africa based on the book. In 1985, with renewed interest in Karen Blixen occasioned the the film production of Out of Africa, an agreement was reached for the house to become part of the National Museums of Kenya. Many pieces of furniture that Karen Blixen sold to Lady McMillan on her departure were acquired back and constitute part of the exhibition in the Museum.

EDITOR’S EXPERIENCE

A LUXURIOUS OASIS IN THE WILD Bush Safari Organised By Lisa Christoffersen Picture this you are on a chartered flight with your friends heading to your vacation destination. Now that you have that image in mind let me make it even more vivid. Kenya is the ultimate safari destination but you may never experience it all. I feel like I am on the verge of that and that is thanks to Scenic Air Safaris and Elsa Kopje. I headed to Elsa Kopje one of Elewana’s most elegantly styled lodges in Meru on a bespoke guided flying safari excursion. This is the most intimate way to travel and experience the wilderness. We were offered champagne while on the flight and you are given headphones to communicate with the pilot. The pilot will give gems of information when it comes to sites that you fly past. The award-winning boutique lodge was named after Elsa the lioness. The lioness was made famous through the book and film Born Free. It is sculpted into Mughwango Hill, above the site of George Adamson’s original camp where he raised and released orphan lions. The lodge boasts of stunning views overlooking the Meru plains from different viewpoints within the property. The property received a Good Safari Guide’s award for ‘Best Safari Property in Africa’. They work hard to preserve and promote community conservation. This is one of Meru’s well-kept secrets. We enjoyed exclusive perks on this flight. We landed on the dusty Kinna

airstrip where we found a group of school children awaiting the arrival of the plane. This was a refreshing welcome, then my friends and I noticed that a lovely breakfast was laid out for us at the top end of the airstrip. After we had our breakfast, we were transferred to Elsa Kopje via a game drive in a luxury open safari vehicle all the way to the lodge. Sleeping in luxury is an essential part of your safari, Elsa Kopje lives up to those expectations. Stay in luxury cottages with sweeping views. We were well received by the staff at the lodge and that made my stay even more exciting. I got a personalized note from the management staff welcoming me to the lodge it is those little thoughtful things that make you want to keep going back. Every cottage is uniquely designed and crafted to incorporate the natural features of the rocky hillside. They have 6 spacious Cottages that have 5 doubles and 1 twin, all en suite. Elsa’s Honeymoon suites are the ultimate romantic experience. They have 3 honeymoon cottages with 2 spacious en suite doubles with private decks and outside baths. They have a 1 large triple-level cottage with a private sitting room, double en suite bedroom & a private deck as well. There is one family cottage that has two ensuite bedrooms, a sitting room, and a large private veranda. Elsa’s Private House is a spacious, stylish, exclusive hideaway set slightly apart from the main lodge. It is ideal for

families or those guests after a little more luxury, with one double and one twin room, shared sitting room, dining room, veranda, and private pool. The meal policy is based on individual dining. They have an elegant and comfortable lounge and dining area where you can enjoy your meals. Breakfast is a la carte, lunch is a buffet menu and dinner is a set menu. Mealtimes at the facility are flexible, if you have any special dietary requests it should be done well in advance. There are provisions for picnic breakfasts and lunches during your game drive. We were lucky to enjoy a bush breakfast with a live cooking station and sundowners. There is something magical about sunsets and a sundowner at Elsa Kopje is something that should be on your to-do list. You also have your pick of a select premium wine list. We had the ultimate dining experience that can never be forgotten. They curated and created the most unique premium dining experience with their set menu. We enjoyed sharing the days experience and created lasting memories over delicious food and drink. You have an array of activities to choose from while at Elsa Kopje. Take a shared game drive in custom vehicles, every game drive is a different experience because you will see something uniquely different. You can take a guided bush walk up the Mughwango Hill. If you are a bird

lover, you can view over 450 species in the park. Try something new by fishing in the Tana or Rojewero rivers. Take a dip in the exquisite infinity pool after an activity-filled day or visit the spa for a relaxing experience. You will think you have experienced it all until we hiked up the Kopje in time for the sunrise and sipped coffee as the sun rose over the national park it was one of the most breathtaking views I have experienced in my life. Sadly, my three-day trip ended but the flight back with Scenic Air Safari was equally as exceptional. This unique experience changed me, inspired me and made me think differently. Elsa Kopje helped me discover many ways you can immerse yourself in a vacation. This Award-winning boutique lodge just celebrated its 20 Years Anniversary and the event was graced by Virginia McKenna (Actress from Born Free, who played Joy Adamson)

SUNDOWNERS ON MANDA ISLAND

This jewel in Kenya’s coastline is across the channel from Shela. It is the perfect place to escape to while in Lamu. It is the best spot to watch the sunset on the island. You can experience the sundown-

You cannot visit the coastal region and not have a taste of their food. The cuisine in Lamu

is full of flavors. Take your pick of biryanis, curries, couscous, pasta, coconut rice with mango chutney, and the varied seafood. Their flavors are rich because of the spices in the area and of course the fresh coconut milk. You can also

drink Coconut water, locally known as madafu. which is believed to have so many health benefits.

HUMPBACK WHALES Migration GAME WATCHERS

Did You Know? Did you know that humpback whales are referred to as humpback because of the habit of raising and bending their backs in preparation for a dive? They feed mostly in the summer and live off fat during the winter. They use a hunting technique known as bubble netting; they have no teeth with two blow holes on top of their head. 64 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

T

he humpback whale is a species of baleen whale, you can find them in all major oceans and seas .It has an average lifespan of 45-50 years. Humpbacks are mainly black or grey, they have long flippers making it a third of their body length. Humpback whales are slow swimmers that is why it easier for you to see them. Most local and international visitors are aware of Kenya’s magnificent beaches, coral reefs, fishes and sea turtles; they may not know that there are different species of dolphins and whales in Watamu. This different species make up what can be referred to as the ‘Marine Big Five’. Humpback whales are one of the most majestic creatures of the sea. They are seen annually passing through the Watamu Protected Area on the Kenyan Coast. Finding new species in the sea has been made possible by sports fishermen with the Kenya Association of Sea Anglers in association with Kenya Marine Mammal Network. They have been able to find hotspots where the whales will be. This is necessary information in that it allows whale watchers to see the migration of humpback whales and the occasional sighting of killer whales, sperm whales and bryde whales. The annual humpback migration occurs every year between July and November. This attraction has caused a stir in the Watamu region giving tourists something to look forward to. In 2012, Hemingways Watamu, a 5-star beach hotel and a major conservation and community supporter, became the first facility in Kenya to offer whale watching excursions. The whale migration and the wildebeest migration occur almost at the same time. It used to be overshadowed but now the whale migration is becoming a must do activity when you visit the Kenyan Coast.

INSIGHTS ON SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

Judy Kepher Gona

Judy Kepher-Gona is a force to reckon with when it comes to sustainable tourism. In this interview, the founding director of the Sustainable Travel & Tourism Agenda (STTA) gives us insight into her work and experience as a champion of sustainable tourism.

What Best Defines Who You Are as a Career Woman? My resilient spirit. This has helped me to become a thought leader in sustainable tourism in Africa and globally. I am also a recipient of the 2019 Forbes Woman Africa - Sustainable Citizen Award. What Does Sustainable Tourism Entail? Sustainable tourism balances tourism growth (economic need) with the well-being (social needs) of people in destinations and the conservation of the natural environment (ecological needs) of the destination. It can be simply referred to as tourism for people, planet and profit. How Has It Grown In The Continent And Country? In the last decade, the level of awareness in Africa has significantly increased. This can be seen in Eastern and Southern African countries through nature-based tourism, particularly wildlife tourism. The commitment to sustainable tourism is notable through the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The African Sustainable and Responsible Tourism Charter is a comprehensive guideline for Africa on Sustainable tourism. However, it is not mandatory for countries to sign and implement this brilliant idea. In Kenya, the awareness is high but this has not been completely translated into a change of practice. This a call to action for all stakeholders in the tourism sector to advocate for. Which Struggles Can You Say The Country Is Facing When It Comes To Fully Realize The Potential Of Sustainable Tourism? I believe three things stand in the way of Kenya fully realizing the potential off sustainable tourism. The perception that the cost of sustainable tourism management would be too high, the perception that being sustainable means being less competitive and the low capacity to integrate sustainability into policy, strategy and destination branding. If these issues are addressed then we will be on our away to having a sustainable

tourism model. What Do You Think Is Needed To Model Sustainable Tourism In Africa? We need to invest time and money on changing mindsets and practices. There is a need to unlearn what we know and how we practice tourism and relearn sustainable tourism. We need a new set of skills to drive sustainable tourism in Africa. Are There Trends In The International Sustainable Tourism Sector That You Think We Should Adopt? There are global values that define sustainable tourism. They are captured in various protocols and charters, so we don’t need to adopt what others are doing. We need to use these protocols as references and come up with responsive practices that work for our environment. There Has Been Major Growth In International Brands In The Kenyan Market What Do You Think Has Influenced That? One major factor influencing the growth of international brands in Kenya is the projected growth of 136 million tourist arrivals to Africa by 2030. This then becomes a potential place for growth for their brands. Do You Think They Are Doing Their Part In Promoting Sustainable Tourism In The Country? I would give them a mixed scorecard when it comes to transferring best practices in sustainable tourism. This is because they tend to leave their environmental and social-good identities as soon as they enter the Kenya market. Which Achievements Are You Most Proud Of In Your 18 Years In The Tourism Sector? I have a lot of things to be proud of such as designing Kenya’s leading sustainable tourism brands- the eco-rating scheme and eco-warrior awards. I was also the first African to serve on the Board of the Interna-

70 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

tional Ecotourism Society, and The Global Sustainable Tourism Council. Together with other thought leaders, we designed an award-winning conservancy, Mara Naboisho Conservancy, which has become a model for community conservancies in Africa. Through this, I became the first woman to serve as chairperson of a community conservancy in Masai Mara ( Mara North Conservancy). I also am immensely proud that I have been able to share my thoughts on the need for sustainable tourism through the founding of STTA. STTA has become a voice for championing sustainable tourism, launching the East Africa Sustainable Tourism Report, and sustainable Tourism Africa Summit as a brand to promote sustainable tourism dialogue. As A Woman In Tourism What Challenges Have You Faced And How Have You Cut Through Those Tapes? I have faced many challenges that women face in their various careers such as being ignored and criticized. This goes back to my resilient spirit this is how I cut through tapes. I knew what I was working towards and I did not give up, 18 years in the industry shows my resilience. What Role Does The Media Especially Travel And Leisure Magazines Such As Go Places Digital Play In Highlighting The Importance Of Sustainable Tourism To The Public? Media plays a significant role in amplifying sustainable tourism voices and highlighting sustainable practices of businesses that have embraced sustainability. They can also call out those who violate principles of sustainable tourism and constantly advocate for change. What Mantra Guides Your Business Ethic? We can all make a difference. Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.

The first step is to shred both your roasted chicken breasts and lettuce leaves. You can store them in different bowls as you prepare to assemble your wrap. The next step is to slice your avocado, cucumber, and red onions. Work with whatever shape is suitable for you as you slice. Mix these ingredients together after slicing. Place the avocado, cucumber, salt and pepper red onion and lettuce in one bowl. Proceed to mix the ingredients with lemon juice this is meant to add more flavor to your dish. You can choose to make your tortillas from scratch or you can get store bought ones. At this stage, you have the choice of heating up your tortilla on a pan. MERCEDES-AMG G63 2019

For the Love of Cars Mercedes has a reputation for building the best cars and has over the years gained critical acclaim for all its engineering expertise in the industry. In 1973, Daimler decided to develop an off-road vehicle that will cater to the needs of their customers. The G-Class was primarily for the off-road market hence its macho design but it has gained popularity over the years because of its signature look. Legend has it that the G Wagon was initially designed for the Shah of Iran who wanted a military grade car that would also look classy on formal occasions. The Mercedes Benz G-Class 2019 is finally here. The G-Wagon as it is popularly known has earned an iconic status for being one of the best all-terrain passenger vehicles. The unveiling and briefing took place at the DT Dobie Showroom to a packed audience on June 13th. The G-Class maintained its boxy profile and raw outlook with other features including the signature two round headlamps, headlight washer nozzles, steel bullbars, and that shiny rear-mounted spare tire cover. It also has sun visors and an interior mounting bracket. The exterior door handles, hinges and lock mechanisms were also kept to ensure that the G-Class retains its signature look. This Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) has been fitted with a hand built 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with 588 horsepower, 850 NM of Torqueand it goes from 0 to 100 kph in just 4.5seconds. It is an all-wheel drive

and the engine powers through a nine-speed automatic. The G-Class has an independent front suspension and a lower centre of gravity which makes it capable of handling any kind of terrain. An electronic suspension system has been designed to improve the G-Class’ performance both on and off-road is standard on the G63. It doubles with a more user-friendly differential system and new off-road modes known as G-Mode. G-Mode activates whenever low-range is selected or centre differential is locked, and it adjusts the suspension as well as the steering and throttle to improve the G-Class’ off-road abilities. The G-Mode includes a dedicated trail, sand and rock settings.

The G-Class has completely revamped the interior which has been brought up to the S-Class levels of comfort and luxury. It comes with a very comfortable and attractive hand-stitched leather upholstery heated front and rear seats. Space has always been the selling point and the G wagon is very spacious with comfortable seats and adequate legroom for all passengers. The new frame increased leg room especially in the back by 5.9 inches. Other new additions to the G-Class include standard in console cup holders and two12.3-inch centre displays new digital instrument cluster. Standard features include an adjustable power steering,

three-zone automatic climate control, navigation, adaptive cruise control, and automated emergency braking.

RATING

The 2019 G-Class is truly an icon in this generation. It has transcended engineering expectations by retaining the spirit and enthusiasm of the original but also refining it so as to fit the modern standards of comfort and amenities. The last four decades have seen the G-Class maintain its original look, but underneath the vehicle, it features the latest technology which marks the G-Class as a pacesetter in the motoring industry.

BOOK REVIEW

Dear Ijeawele, Or A Feminist Manifesto In Fifteen Suggestions GENRE: Epistolary Novel, Feminism Chimamanda has been a very essential voice when it comes to feminism. As we embrace feminism the conversation should also go back to how it can be implemented. This book raises the question of how one should raise their child to be a feminist. This is a letter written in response to her female Nigerian friend who asked her how to raise her child as a feminist. These fifteen suggestions were Chimamanda’s way of helping her friend, this book is not your typical how to raise a child manual. In this list, Chimamanda suggests that her friend should remain a full person and that motherhood should not be the only thing that defines her. Adichie emphasizes the fact that childcare is not solely her responsibility, she should share it equally. As is the norm in many African cultures where we thank the husband for changing their daughter’s nappy or the dreaded word babysit their own child. I like the fact that she suggests that they should never tell their daughter not to do something because she is a girl. We are moving away from things that restrict women because of their gender. Through the feminist conversation, Chimamanda continues to emphasize that marriage should not be termed as an achievement for their child. Dear Ijeawele is an insightful and highly readable essay by a remarkable author. This book is influenced by her Igbo culture but it has universal appeal. These fifteen suggestions are proposals for further discussion and development as it continues to stimulate and educate the reader. It goes to show that the feminist conversation continues to grow. This is a highly recommended read.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a Nigerian writer. In 2008, she was awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant. Adichie has been described as “the most prominent” of a “procession of critically acclaimed young anglophone authors who is succeeding in attracting a new generation of readers to African literature. Her first novel, Purple Hibiscus (2003), was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction and was awarded the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book in 2005. GOLF For

BEGINNERS

TEACH POWER FIRST, NOT TECHNIQUE TO KIDS!! By Rizwan Charania Head Teaching Professional & TPI Golf Fitness Coach at the RC Golf Academy Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Lexi Thompson, what do these Pros all have in common? They have the longest average drives on the PGA & LPGA Tours and they are among the most consistent performers week in week out. I believe strongly that there is a direct correlation between longer hitters and tournaments won. My approach to teaching juniors over the last year or so has changed into first creating a powerful swing before a “technically correct” one. If a child can learn to hit the ball hard very early on, they will be at a huge advantage later on in the developmental stages.

Here are some tips on how to build a powerful swing: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Let kids learn with a driver or fairway wood first and always teed up Guide them on a general Grip (usually baseball grip) , Alignment and Aim Have a wider stance than usual Get them to swing as hard as possible, even if this compromises on balance. They will learn to control it themselves.

CRADLE OF CHRISTIANITY AND MODERN LEARNING

R

abai is well known as the Cradle of Christianity and Education in Kenya spanning over 150 years ago. This is where the first church, St. Paul’s Church and the first Swahili Dictionary was written. Dr. Ludwig Krapf, a German missionary of the Church of England arrived in Rabai, Kilifi County in 1846. He was welcomed warmly by the Rabai Kaya leader Jindwa and later given 92 acres of land by the Kaya council of elders. Later on, Dr. Krapf was joined by Johan Rebmann who together started to build the pioneer church, St. Paul’s Church, a school and later the cottages (Krapf and Rebmann). The Church- St. Paul’s is still in use today. Rabai also played an important role in the abolishment of slave trade in East Africa. It became a safe haven for the freed slaves. Rabai is dotted by five (5) Kayas namely; Mudzimuvya, Fimboni, Mudzimwiru, Muzizima and Bomu. These were the ancestral settlements of the Wa-Rabai community. The landscape also contains the Rabai Christian Mission Station that consists of the first church built in 1848 followed by Krapf and Rebmanns’ cottages, St. Paul Church

built in 1887, a cemetery behind Rebmanns’ cottage, Press house commonly referred as Kuri house, Isaac Nyondo Primary School and a market building built several meters away from the religious core of the Mission Station. Over the years, despite Rabai’s historical and religious significance, as the springboard of Christianity, secular education and modern lifestyle, most of the historical features that are over 100 years are in a deplorable condition of conservation. It is against this backdrop that the Federal Republic of Germany, through its embassy in Kenya has again committed 60,000 Euros for Phase 2 to facilitate the rehabilitation of Krapf Cottage. In April 2018, Dr. Krapf Memorial Museum was rehabilitated under Phase 1 through the funding from the Federal Republic of Germany in collaboration with the Anglican Church of Kenya. The Government of Germany provided Kshs.5.7M. The funds provided by Germany were used for rehabilitation of the

Rebmann Cottage and the first church which is currently the museum. The rehabilitation included buildings’ restoration, signage, as well as for the procurement of museum exhibition showcases complete with rise; display panels and captions, casting of agreed exhibition items (e.g. Dr. Krapf statue & elephant tusks), a display screen and purchase of some stationery for mounting the exhibition. National Museums of Kenya also availed Kshs.2 million for research work and collections for the museum exhibition. These funds covered expenses for literature reviews, and extensive interviews with locals and church communities living in Frere Town (Mombasa), Rabai, Jilore, Gulbanti, Mariakani and Sagalla. Finally, NMK funds also facilitated recovery of materials and collections to be used as well as the treatment and conservation of these display items. Phase 2 of the funding will now

cover the rehabilitation of Dr. Krapf Cottage to a community resource center where locals, visitors and other users may access information particularly on the history of the German missionary work within the area. This resource center can also benefit the local community and the neighboring school that would use it for study, access the internet and other opportunities. The Krapf’s House/Cottage, was built from mud and coral hence vulnerable to termite activity. The architectural ensemble /design signify the introduction of western architectural forms alongside traditional ones that have coexisted to date. It was said to have multiple usage housing a school and health facility. Initially, it had a flat roof but later a second floor with palm frond roofing was added. In the 20th century the makuti roof was replaced with iron sheets. Owing to poor maintenance the upper floor collapsed. Currently, the ground

floor functions as the vicarage and offices of the Rabai Archdeaconry and St. Paul Church youths. It’s currently in a very poor state of conservation with serious structural cracks and termites infected wooden members. Therefore, the rehabilitation of Krapf cottage will repair and strengthen the ground floor in order to be able to receive the re-constructed upper floor, termite treatment, water proofing and restore the building to its original glory. The upper floor will accommodate a conference room/ multipurpose hall, where scholars and local community can meet for variable functions and discuss issues that relate to their welfare. National Museums of Kenya is also working with the local communities to help conserve the heritage and be able to earn a living at the same time through developing craft industries and bee keeping.
