Statement of Nomination
The AIAS chapter at the University of Minnesota is nominated for the Chapter of the Year Honor Award for fostering progressive student leadership, providing numerous opportunities to its members for professional development, and for striving to grow as a leading chapter within the Midwest region and the nation. This year we focused on increasing the number of attendees to AIAS conferences, membership, and member engagement. Last year at all four conferences we were able to represent the Minnesota chapter with 54 members, this year we are over 100 members. Since most of our current board consists of seniors, by increasing these numbers we hope to generate more excitement and hence new board members next year. The Chapter has worked to engage in beneficial activities for our members through Freedom By Design, the Mentorship Program, and the upcoming Archiculture Screening/Panel Discussion which is co-sponsored by APX (the architecture fraternity) and the School of Architecture. The AIAS Minnesota chapter for many years has recruited high numbers in membership thanks to a large school aa a result we are currently the largest chapter in the Midwest Quad. Now the chapter is putting forth efforts to maintain membership and relevance within the College by hosting the Spring Midwest Quad Conference. With the help of the thriving local architectural community, we’ve attracted over 25 professional sponsors and volunteers to ensure the event is a success. Our chapter looks forward to facilitating an energetic environment fit for professional and academic development now and for years to come. “The sum of the parts make the whole” Just like the AIAS logo isn’t complete without all its pieces, our chapter can’t be what it is without each and every unique member!

Position Descriptions President The official executive representative of the chapter. They meet with the heads of the College of Design, School of Architecture, and AIA regularly to maintain good professional relationships. They set the visionary outlook for the chapter moving forward. Vice President Assists the president in achieving the goals of the chapter, also coordinates the AIAS Mentor Program pairing older and younger students. Freedom by Design Director Leads the Freedom by Design team to make an impact in the Twin Cities community. Advertising Coordinator Creates awareness for chapter events, and works closely with the college advertising team. Events Coordinator Responsible for the preperation of special events such as Quad and FORUM, promotes attendance. Outreach Coordinator Coordinates speakers for meetings, and outside events such as firm and construction tours. Fundraising Coordinator Responsible for developing fundraising concepts and applying for grants and required permits. Spring Quad Director Manages the Spring Quad committee to ensure the event is a sucess. Webmaster Operates the organizations website and provides necessary updates to keep members informed.

Membership Report We have continued the tradition of consitently high membership numbers, averaging 125 members each year over a 5 year period. This year we reached our 10% increase in membership goal and we also increased member engagement by 93% this year over last year reinvigorating the program through awareness and promotional strategies. It’s a pleasure and an honor to write in support of AIAS University of Minnesota chapter (AIAS UMN) for AIAS Chapter of the Year. I have been Head of the School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota for the past 10 years and I have seen a consistently high level of activity and steady increase in membership participation over the last decade. AIAS UMN is the best AIAS chapter that I have ever seen in terms of leadership, consistency and general level of engagement. Each of the AIAS-UMN presidents I have worked with has exhibited a high degree of organizational skill and has found his or her own way to engage an excellent set of student leaders. The executive boards have worked effectively together and, as individuals, each officer has been responsible for a wide range of creative activities. This collaborative leadership model works well at Minnesota, reinforcing the design studio culture which promotes camaraderie and healthy dialogue. There are many milestones of accomplishment for the AIAS-UMN chapter, I will cite only a few in order to illustrate the overall level of distinction they achieve. This fall, our school celebrated its 100th year with a series of Centennial events. AIAS-UMN was a wonderful partner, working with AIA MN, UMN faculty, College of Design staff, School of Architecture staff, UMN students and the Centennial Committee. They were quick to suggest activities they felt would appeal to students and to volunteer for the many events that needed support. Most importantly we knew we could count on them to offer great ideas, to follow up with organized support and deliver on their promises. Another example of their work this year was the AIA Minnesota skyway mini golf event. The timing of the event was difficult as we had just completed the main Centennial event, Quad planning was intensifying and the school year was also very busy. The School was invited to participate and I contacted AIAS-UMN. We all understood the importance of representing the School and the limits of the resources stretched thin due to the many activities this year. The students rose to the challenge, identifying students willing to engage and worked with a very limited budget. With resourceful and creative practices, they actually spent less than the alloted budget. The resulting mini-golf hole was playful and well designed and we were proud to have it representing the School. The AIAS-UMN also reached out to the new AIAS-Dunwoody body to support them to ensure the two groups had a positive relationship. These two events exemplify what I believe is the essence of the AIAS-UMN group: completely reliable, willing to step up to the challenge even with limited time and budget, understanding the many agendas at work and resourceful in engaging a broad range of constituents. At the national and regional level, the AIAS-UMN has been very active, not only hosting Midwest Quad in 2014, but also robustly participating in Grassroots and Forum. While this involvement is noteworthy, I believe their most valuable national/regional contribution is as a model chapter. Their award winning efforts in Freedom by Design are remarkable yet this excellence is consistent with their work in many other programs. In the decade of excellent AIAS-UMN chapters that I’ve witnessed as Head, this current configuration of AIAS-UMN is among the best I have seen. Recognizing their work with this award is fitting and I recommend them without hesitation.

Freedom By Design 2013 AIAS Freedom by Design Honor Award Winner

Following the awarding of the first ever Freedom By Design Honor Award, the AIAS MN Freedom by Design program quickly went back to work and focused on improving the safety of our latest client Karen in Brooklyn Park, MN, by repairing her poorly-finished, mold-infested bathroom. This improvements include re-installing wall boards, new tiling, and finishing. For future projects, we are focusing on the core of the Twin Cities, to reach projects that students can more easily access to volunteer. We are also interested in community spaces that impact multiple people. Upcoming Project A potential upcoming project is with Sarah’s... an Oasis for Women, a shelter in Saint Paul for women who have survived abuse, violence, war, and other circumstances. They currently has kitchen facilities that provide some barriers in terms of safety, accessability, and language. Our potential project would be to re-design and build their kitchen. 2014 AIAS Midwest Quad BRIDGING - “It’s all about making connections!”

AIAS Minnesota will host the 2014 AIAS Midwest Spring Quad titled “BRIDGING - It’s all about making connections.” With the understanding that future Quad’s will only be held once a year, we wanted to make sure this single 2014 Midwest Quad would be special therefore we took extra steps to make it memorable. We raised over $35,000 and received both financial and volunteering support from nearly 25 different local firms and organizations. This shows the level of engagement and support we have from the local architectural community and is part of what has made our chapter so sucessful. In addition, we were able to promote the event through extensive social media engagement with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube and as a result we received 295 attendees of our goal of 300 from all across the Midwest. Four Tracks, One BRIDGING Experience! In order to showcase Minneapolis, we divided the conference into 4 distinct regions in the city each showcasing their unique characteristics. We unified them, by having common topics focused on Community, Urban Environment, Profession and Transportation represented on each track. We also created a unified visual marketing strategy to promote each area.

AIAS Minnesota Members at Fall Quad in Columbus, IN
AIAS Minnesota attended the 2013 Fall Quad with 20 members from our chapter. We made the 12 hour journey to see the great modernist city of Columbus. This year our engagement in National AIAS increased as we had 13 members attend FORUM in Chicago, compared with just 4 from last year. With all the events at FORUM and interacting with over a thousand architecture students has provided an engagement and experience our members will never forget. We returned with enthusiasm and began to implement some of the thoughtful conversation and relevant issues that were presented. Every year we send members to Grassroots to do workshops on how to become an effective leader and run a successful AIAS and FBD Chapter. This year AIAS MN brought four officers to Grassroots, two current chapter leaders and two future ones. At AIAS MN we take time to train our leaders every year by holding board meetings with past and incoming student boards and walking them through the year and their duties. Over the summer, the new board holds a social retreat to bond and discuss the upcoming year. All four AIAS MN members taking a photo with the rest of the Grassroots Attendees!

AIAS MN has worked hard every year to maintain a strong connection with our local AIA. Our chapter is represented at each of the four AIA board meetings with an AIAS representative. Through these connections we are able to enjoy the benefits of their support and resources. Their support has been especially helpful in our planning of the Midwest Spring Quad 2014 as each has provided financial sponsorship to the conference. The AIA and AIAS have cultivated a symbiotic relationship with help going both ways. This year alone we have participated in several AIA events including the AIA MN Dinner Awards and the AIA Minneapolis Bowling Night alongside our College of Design Faculty. Our members also contributed to the AIA Minneapolis Skyway Open in which our chapter constructed a mini-golf hole to compete against architectural firms from which the proceeds go to the Boys and Girls Club of Minnesota. There we enjoyed some friendly competition with the newly formed AIAS Dunwoody chapter as well! Our student representatives for AIA have continued to relay opportunities back to our chapter and we have continued to reap the benefits of those relationships.

AIAS MN will Facilita a Discusion Between Students and Faculty about Studio Culture
AIAS MN has sought out relationships with multiple student groups and organizations that have resulted in benefits for each organization. AIAS MN has collaborated with groups such as the BS Student Advisory Committee (BSSAC), the BDA Student Advisory Committee (BDASAC), the Graduate Student Advisory Committee (GSAC), Student Unions Activities Group (SUA), Minnesota Student Association (MSA), and the architecture fraternity Alpha Rho Chi (APX) chapter. AIAS MN has a student representative that sits on each the BDASAC and BSSAC. Along with APX, AIAS MN is co-hosting the screening of the documentary film Archiculture, on April 16th. Following the presentation, the GSAC is helping to record the panel discussion with faculty members as part of the School’s NAAB accreditation process. This year, AIA MN and APX will also be co-hosting the annual art auction that our Freedom By Design program has organized for the past six years. AIAS MN has set a high standard for member engagement, both with the local community and the National AIAS, and is committed to continuing this heightened level of participation in the coming years. Fall Semester Kick Off Meeting
Our chapter has worked hard this year to engage our members with many meetings and events. We started the year with a strong kickoff meeting which set the stage early on for involvement. Our bi-weekly meetings continue to grow in attendance featuring speakers from the design/architectural community in the Twin Cities. This exposure to professionals has given our members insights to the operations and routine of working within firms. Our Mentor Program has served as a useful resource for 1st and 2nd year students to discuss topics such as choosing between the BDA or the BS program, studio culture, and team building activities like Lego and cookie design competitions. Firm tours this year included visits to BWBR Architects and The Cuningham Group. Site tours included “Nic on Fifth�, a 26 story mixed use project, and the renovation of Northrup Auditorium on the University campus. Melissa Lindsley with the American Galvanizers Association (AGA) also led a tour through a local steel fabrication plant. Our members also volunteered in fundraising and local firm events contributing to their personal and professional growth. Typical Meeting Attendance

Legacy Our Past, Present, and Future
AIAS Minnesota Student Board 2013-2014
Our Past, our Present, and our Future is what makes us AIAS Minnesota. For decades we has remained an active and influential component within the College of Design here at the University of Minnesota and with our AIA counterpart in order to enrich each other in a spirt of colaboration. We have consistently strived to be an influence within the Midwest Quad and National levels of the organization. This includes everything from hosting AIAS Conferences in 2007 2009, 2014 and having a handful of National officers from our chapter in that past. This year, we strived for more member involvement through chapter meetings, conferences, and local events such as the 6th Annual FBD Art Auction and hosting Spring Quad. We have taken the battle for relevance head on in our school to offer many benefits and opportunities to all of our members, and our leadership culture has always been one of strong professionalism. AIAS Minnesota represents a thriving and successful chapter that has much to offer the community and AIAS as a whole. Because of this, we know our chapter will continue to have relevancy and importance for many years to come.
