Mayor’s Message As we celebrate our 75th anniversary as a city, it is wonderful to reflect back on our history to see how far we have come. I’ve enjoyed looking at photos from Goodyear’s early days and am truly amazed by the rich connection our city has had to important events throughout our history. From the cotton grown in our fields for tires used on airplanes in World War I, to being the site where the famous Goodyear blimps were built, Goodyear has always contributed significantly to our region, our state, and the country as a whole. I am proud to have been a part of this community for nearly a quarter of a century. When my late husband and I were looking for a place to retire after traveling the world with the military, we were considering a number of different locations here in the Valley, but we kept coming back to Goodyear because we noticed how nice and well-maintained the city looked and it gave us a sense that the residents of this city truly cared about the place where they lived. Those first impressions proved true and that was the deciding factor in our choosing to live in Goodyear. The aesthetic appeal of our city is still remarkable and our Council is committed to ensuring our community continues to be a beautiful place to live, work, and play. Our highest priority is to build and sustain a high quality of life for our residents. I hope the contents of this yearbook will provide an opportunity for you to join me in reflecting on our history, celebrating our successes, and looking ahead to the bright future before us as we continue to have a vital role in the development of the Southwest Valley. Happy 75th Anniversary Goodyear!

PARKS • Grass is the third most important source of oxygen behind trees and algae. An acre of turf produces more oxygen than an acre of rain forest. An area of turf that is 50 feet x 50 feet can produce enough O2 for a family of four and the turf can produce enough O2 for 64 people per day. GRC Groundbreaking

The Ultimate Gathering Place

Chasing the stars is a rare sculpture that you’re actually encouraged to touch. The-30-foot tall kinetic art is made of independently moving arcs with different colored inlays. When you pull the attached poles to power the art piece, it projects vibrant colors onto the ground as it moves. The artist, Joe O’Connell, is the founder of Creative Machines in Tucson and has created more than 50 public art projects all around the world! We’re thrilled that his latest piece is now being enjoyed by so many in Goodyear.

Goodyear’s first-ever recreation campus features a 30-acre park and 48,000-square-foot recreation center including an aquatics facility. The Goodyear Recreation Campus is a one-stop shop that offers top-notch indoor and outdoor features that were designed, in part, by the community.

OUR WATER FUTURE In 2017, the Goodyear City Council approved a historic water agreement with Salt River Project. The partnership brings, for the first time, Colorado River water to Goodyear. In December of 2021, the city of Goodyear will complete construction on its very first Surface Water Treatment Facility built to directly treat and deliver the city’s Colorado River water resources.

Surface Water Treatment Facility Construction

Goodyear Civic Square

The highly anticipated Goodyear Civic Square project is underway to build the future heart of the city! Goodyear Civic Square at GSQ will serve as a community gathering spot for events such as festivals, concerts, and parades. Since 1984, the city has aimed to create a dynamic project like this. In 2019, dreams finally became reality when an incredible public-private partnership between the city and globe corporation began. Globe owns 47 acres where the new civic square will be built and is donating some of the land to Goodyear for this project. It is more than just a city hall and Class A office space. This project is expected to jumpstart the development of the restaurants, stores and entertainment options residents want. GSQ will attract hundreds of jobs to the area which will be a big draw for new and exciting businesses who want to be a part of the action. -InFocus, May 2021
