About Us Goodwill Industries of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties is a local 501c3 non-profit organization.

We provide vocational training and job placement services to people in our community who face barriers to employment such as youth, justiceinvolved, those with disabilities, and Veterans.

Our Mission Services are funded by Goodwill retail operations, grants, donations, and contracts which ensures all of our programs are available at no cost to qualifying individuals.

Message from the CEO Pet e r Ma rc u s President & CEO

When most people hear the word “Goodwill,” images of donation sites and thrift stores often come to mind.

While these are vital components of our organization, Goodwill VSB is much more than a retail entity. We are a local 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to transforming lives by providing vocational training and job placement services to our community. Our mission goes beyond charity, focusing on the inherent value of work and the empowerment of individuals. In this annual report, we will showcase the incredible impact we made in 2022 and outline our vision for the future.

At Goodwill VSB, we believe in giving a hand up rather than a handout. We are proud of our passionate, educated, and dedicated staff who work tirelessly to empower individuals facing employment barriers. Our mission service programs offer a pathway to personal fulfillment and dignity through work. In 2022, we operated 17 such programs, serving over 4,700 clients. Notably, 520 individuals earned valuable credentials, while over 560 secured permanent employment. Our youth career service programs also provided 335 young people with job opportunities.

Our mission service programs are made possible through a variety of funding sources, including revenues from our retail operations, grants, donations, and contracts. This multi-faceted financial support structure allows us to offer our services to individuals at no cost, ensuring equal access to vocational training and job placement services.

As we reflect on the achievements of 2022, we are also looking towards the future. GoodwillVSB is about more than just thrift stores; it’s about transforming lives and empowering individuals through work.

In April 2021, Goodwill Industries of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties was once again accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for a period of three years for the following programs: • • •

This accreditation decision represents the highest level of accreditation that can be given to an organization and shows the organization’s substantial conformance to the CARF standards. An organization receiving a Three-year Accreditation has put itself through a rigorous peer review process. It has demonstrated, to a team of surveyors during an on-site visit its commitment to offering programs and services that are measurable, accountable, and of the highest quality.

About CARF CARF is an independent, nonprofit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value, and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process and continuous improvement services that center on enhancing the lives of the persons served.

Jay’s Success Story Jay, a disabled worker with a justice-involved past, faced numerous challenges finding employment. However, his life took a positive turn when he discovered the invaluable support of Goodwill Mission Services and its various career programs tailored to assist individuals like him. Goodwill provided Jay with essential job training, employment placement services, and community-based programs designed to empower people with disabilities or disadvantages.

With the guidance of his coordinator, Jay honed his skills and gained valuable work experience at Rancho Simi Parks and Recreation. Despite facing setbacks in his quest for permanent employment, Jay remained determined and, with the assistance of his coordinator, applied for a job in the steel industry. Jay’s coordinator advocated on his behalf and after a rigorous interview process, was hired.

Jay’s involvement with Goodwill not only instilled in him a strong work ethic but also bolstered his sense of self-worth. Flourishing in his job, he now actively gives back to the community by volunteering his time and utilizing his skills to assist others. Jay serves as an inspiring mentor to individuals who with the same barriers he once encountered.

Jay continues to thrive in his chosen career path while embracing his role as a mentor within his community. His newfound optimism for the future and his ability to inspire others with his remarkable journey make him resiliencent and triumph.

Ace’s Success Story Ace grew up homeless and his life always lacked stability. He struggled with school and came close to dropping out. Ace had never had a job and couldn’t see a successful future for himself. Ace was referred to Goodwill for academic guidance and job preparation and was placed in Goodwill’s Ventura County Youth Careers program.

After hearing his story, Ace’s Youth Services Coordinator knew with our help Ace could change his life and find a path toward success and self-sufficiency. They provided help to get him back on track at school and offered job preparation and skills training. Goodwill also provided the supportive services he needed, including offering clothes for school, interviews, and work. Having an interest in the medical field, Ace was placed in a job at a medical scrubs retailer. This job helped him socialize and gain the confidence and motivation he needed to pursue a career in the medical field.

Today, Ace has a new, positive outlook on life and is on track to graduate high school. His job is going very well, and his manager has even noted the amazing change in him.

Ace now feels much more self-reliant and is hopeful for his future career opportunities.
