Our brand new JET (Job, Employment & Training) program places young people with disabilities into internships at businesses, giving them hands-on experience and a leg up in the world of work. (Read more about this program on page 2.) Another program, Project SEARCH, offers high school students in Exceptional Education programs paid internships with community employers. Goodwill is the lead Project SEARCH partner in Marion County. Both of these programs put into practice the adage by Benjamin Franklin: “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” Meanwhile we’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of our BookWorks program, which puts books into the hands and homes of children who may not otherwise have them. Last year the BookWorks program presented books to more than 38,000 children to help them read to succeed. (A story about the annual drive to collect books for the program is on page 3.) When you shop or donate at Goodwill, you support these and other programs that help people of all ages achieve better lives through the power of work. 65 Years Under the Sun! In 1954, gas cost about 29 cents a gallon, Father Knows Best was a popular TV show, and Elvis Presley cut his first commercial record. That same year, in St. Petersburg, Florida, Goodwill-Suncoast bought the Borden’s Dairy building downtown, moved in and began helping people with disabilities get jobs. Fast-forward to 2019, when Goodwill-Suncoast is still growing and going strong. We now operate 12 “superstores” and eleven smaller stores and outlets. We remain committed to helping those with barriers to employment enjoy “the dignity and power of work.” Thanks to all of you, our shoppers and donors, for helping to make that possible!

Y
Our New JET Program Launches! The Job, Education & Training program helps local high schoolers Carey Canedy, the financial comptroller for the Automax car dealership in Pinellas Park, loves working with four Exceptional Student Education students from Lakewood High School. The four are receiving job training (and a paycheck) at Automax via Goodwill’s new JET Program for youth. “It’s great to see them find what they’re interested in,” she says. “They get their hands in it, take it and run!” One of the students is working in auto detailing, one in marketing, and the other two in payments, administration and phone calls. They work from 4 to 6 pm, at least two days per week. The high school students receive continual guidance and support from a Goodwill employment specialist/job coach. A 20-hour pre-employment course is included in the program.
The JET program, also offered in Marion County, is operated and managed by Goodwill-Suncoast in partnership with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, Marion and Pinellas County schools and host sites. A summer and internship component is also available. “We’re doing what no one else is doing,” says Frank Terrell, the Goodwill Employment Specialist who oversees the program in Pinellas County. “The ESE students are a deserving group that we can provide services to. The JET Pilot Frank Terrell is at the control panel of Goodwill’s JET program in Pinellas County, setting the course and playing an instrumental role in getting the initiative off the ground. He oversees the four high school students working at the Automax pilot site, and is actively working to add students and expand to other locations. Frank has been an employment specialist at Goodwill for two years. Prior to that he was a director of social development for Job Corps, and before that he taught for 12 years at local schools, including Shorecrest Preparatory and Admiral Farragut Academy. Frank has three children, a “slew” of grandkids, two master’s degrees and a clear love of helping others, especially youth.
“This program gives them not a leg up on their peers but an equal start,” he says. “To get in to marketing, administrative training and other essential departments is priceless, especially for these kids.” 2
GoodStuff Book Drive Begins! BookWorks Book Drive Feb. 1 - March 15 It has been said many times that “readers are leaders” and we wholeheartedly agree! That’s why February kicks off our annual BookWorks book drive. If you live in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Hernando, Marion, Sumter or Highlands counties, please consider donating new or like-new books for children. To donate books, attach a note indicating they are “For BookWorks” and drop them off at any Goodwill-Suncoast store or donation site. During the entire year, BookWorks volunteers read to thousands of kids from low-income families and then present them each with a personalized book to take home. Project SEARCH Conference In December, Goodwill-Suncoast hosted the Florida Statewide Conference of Project SEARCH, a program that provides job training to high school students with disabilities. The event was held at the Hilton Ocala – where GoodwillSuncoast launched its pilot program – and highlighted our many successes there. Our own Derek Arnold, manager of community employment initiatives, offered insights and practices on maximizing Project SEARCH outcomes.

More specifically, do you have teens who need community service hours? If so, check out our Junior Ambassadors of Goodwill (JAG) summer program. The weekly volunteer program offers 35 community service hours earned in a fun and meaningful way – and lunch and a t-shirt are included! Fashionable, Sustainable & Fun! Ericka Leigh began her Tampa bowtie business after her grandfather passed away. He wore bowties often and so to honor him, she made bowties for those attending his funeral. From there, SEWN APART was born.

With help from Goodwill, Joe Tuzo continues to defy his past. Canadian-born Joe Tuzo was just an 8-year-old boy at hockey practice when he learned his parents were killed in a snow-related car accident. He remembers telling his hockey coach to keep him in the game. Later, the only child left a hockey puck next to their grave. After that unimaginable loss, Joe’s life went on a downward spiral. He was sent to live in Boston with an aunt and uncle. During Joe’s teenage years he fought continually with his uncle and the uncle became abusive. That’s when

With continual help from Goodwill’s Supported Employment program, Joe has held a job as a porter at a mental health facility since 2014. His job coach helps him with “simple reminders and suggestions that help me stay on track,” Joe says. Now that he has settled into a home and a career, Joe continues to grow. He got his driver’s license after four tries with the written test. He hopes his “simple smiles” and kind words help the patients he sees at work. And, he wants to eventually get the education he needs to work with kids at the center who are in foster care. “I want to tell them ‘I’ve been where you are, and how you handle it is everything.” 15,000 square feet, nearly twice the size of the former store, and includes a donation drop off door. In Hillsborough County, construction continues on a brand new 27,700 square foot store at 10739 Big Bend Rd. in Riverview. The store will be one of the major tenants in a new shopping center, and will also house a Goodwill Job Connection Center that offers free employment services to anyone who needs assistance. We’ll offer employment workshops there after the store opens and the Job Connection Center will be in full operation a few months after the store opens.
