NEW DAY FRESH START ANNUAL REPORT

2020 2021

Page   1

Dear Friends of Goodwill, From adversity came innovation and reinvention in 2020-21. As we navigated the challenges of the past year we’ve taken a fresh look at everything, adding new programs and refining existing services to meet emerging needs. Goodwill Industries-Suncoast partnered with community employers to launch the JET Certified program, providing the opportunity for men and women with disabilities to gain training, experience and credentials that prepare them for in-demand jobs. Goodwill also took on The Belle of the Ball program and expanded its reach beyond the dress. In addition to ensuring that young women not miss a special event because they can’t afford a gown, Goodwill is offering career services to help these young women build careers and prosper in the job market. Our Junior Ambassadors of Goodwill (J.A.G.) program and BookWorks children’s literacy program were both reinvented in virtual form to allow these services to continue when we could not gather in person. Another new service is one of our most important ... helping survivors of human trafficking move forward with their lives. Goodwill-Suncoast served 33,366 people during the past year and placed 1,262 people in jobs. Thanks to continuing community support, we are finding new ways to transform lives through learning and the power of work. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” Our past year, through adversity, will mean brighter days ahead for many, thanks to your help. With gratitude,

Deborah A. Passerini, M.Ed., CRC, CE President and Chief Executive Officer Goodwill-Industries Suncoast, Inc.

Through JET Certified, Joshua finds a workplace with respect and camaraderie.

Making the most of her time in our residential re-entry program, Stefanie discovers her dreams and the drive to achieve them. Page   5

Savoring job satisfaction Young man draws encouragement from JET Certified

Joshua Rosario landed a job as a front desk agent with SpringHill Suites in Ocala after completing an internship through the Goodwill JET Certified program and earning a certification in hospitality. JET Certified helps students or adults with learning disabilities or career obstacles get paid, on-the-job training while earning a certification pertaining to the field. His work ethic, attention to detail, and thoughtfulness while interning caught the eye of Chelewa Springs, the hotel’s general manager.

“JET has that special spark to it,” he said. “You feel an enormous amount of pride, like ‘I did it!’”

During his internship in the program, he was guided in navigating guests and other duties by both Chelewa and LaLa Perry, the guest relations manager. Chelewa picked him for the front desk after seeing both his ability to handle high level tasks and “chum” with everyone, including guests.

Josh is one of several JET Certified graduates hired at SpringHill. Since he’s typically scheduled five days a week, he gets a lot of face- and phone-time with guests. He’s become something of a star among staff and guests alike. Chelewa said she sees his name mentioned often on guest comment cards. It’s in part due to his diligence and attention to detail.

“I told him to stay patient, stay diligent, and now he’s running it almost by himself,” LaLa said. Josh likes that his internship provided cross-training, so he can help fill in around the hotel if other departments need a hand. He said JET Certified offered a great opportunity to network and get the tools needed for a position, even if someone didn’t have any prior experience in the field. Earning the certification from the program was like earning a diploma in a way.

LaLa often delegates some aspects of training new participants to Josh because he does well with this role. She watched him grow into the role and grow confident in himself. Now he’s a goto for other participants who may have questions or need help with understanding something.

For Josh, the job is more than just a way for him to pay his bills. It’s the best work environment he’s had, he said. Staff is treated with respect, and treat each other respectfully, too. “This environment has been more encouraging than any I’ve been in,” he said. “There’s more patience, more compassion, and more people to relate to.”

Imprisonment to Empowerment Young woman finds tools for success in re-entry program Stefanie Mitchell is a problem solver. When she spots an issue, she wants to fix it. Her experience behind bars revealed gaps in the prison and rehabilitation system. Her experience in the Goodwill residential re-entry program inspired her to solve them. Stefanie was arrested and spent nine months in prison before being offered a spot at the Goodwill program. It became “one of the best decisions I ever made,” she said. Her time in prison and at Goodwill has inspired her to pursue higher education with the ultimate goal of starting a business that will help fellow offenders exiting similar re-entry programs to find the resources they need to re-start their lives, successfully. “There are not enough resources, and they regress quickly. It’s hard to get an apartment, hard to get anything,” Stefanie said. “I want to fill the gap in between the work release and the real world. I think that’s really important, with the recidivism rate being so high.” It wasn’t easy going from prison, to the work release program, then to life outside. Moving from prison to the program came with some baggage. Stefanie said she first felt guilty and ashamed of what had happened. However, she also learned how much more difficult everyday life was to be labeled.

“You never know what someone is going through,” Stefanie said. “We’re all humans on this earth trying to do better.” When she began working in a Goodwill retail store she had the opportunity to work alongside both fellow program participants and regularly-hired team members while she was under the mentorship of the re-entry program’s team. These interactions helped refocus her vision for the future and regain her self-confidence.

“The staff working there treated all of us women like anyone else,” Stefanie said. “They wanted us to succeed.” She felt backed by her support system: Program Manager Ms. Dunmore, Assistant Manager Ms. Sherman, and Counselor Ms. Renwick helped coach her through struggles and encouraged her to keep trying. Ms. Bell, a Goodwill retail store manager, was always cheering her on. The collective advocacy bolstered Stefanie’s confidence. “A felon deserves to have someone believe in them. Goodwill did that for me,” Stefanie said. After exiting the program and receiving aftercare services in early 2020, Stefanie moved to New York and worked in production on sets for Netflix and Hulu first as a grip/electric, then as a COVID-19 mobile testing site supervisor. Meanwhile she pursued her master’s in Forensic Psychology from North Central University – an online program that allows offenders to graduate. She finished in August 2021, and plans to seek a doctorate. She is working through an internship at a drug rehabilitation facility. Stefanie hopes to have the opportunity to return to GoodwillSuncoast to visit her former mentors and counselors. These steps are steadily leading her toward a new future: one based on experience, with a goal of helping others who have a story like her own solve problems they confront. “Now I feel empowered to share my story,” Stefanie said. “Goodwill was the inspirational piece to be that force of change within the community, within people with similar stories to myself.”

Our Year in Review Keeping the Books Coming

Even during the pandemic, Goodwill’s BookWorks children’s literacy program continued giving books to children who may not otherwise have them. Volunteers provided interactive online story times with preschoolers and teachers presented each child with a book that volunteers dropped off earlier. Book deliveries also continued to underperforming elementary schools.

New Home for Hippie Dash

The Safety Harbor waterfront offered the perfect vibe for the 5th annual Hippie Dash on May 15. More than 1,100 people registered to run, walk or roll while enjoying a morning of peace, love and Goodwill at the groovy new location.

J.A.G. Goes Virtual

The J.A.G. program (Junior Ambassadors of Goodwill) pivoted to a virtual format this year, allowing students to serve the community and earn community service hours during the pandemic. Student projects included collecting goods for food banks and sending hand-made greeting cards to seniors at Goodwill’s Heritage Oaks Apartments.

Helping Girls Say Yes to the Dress

Goodwill began carrying on the legacy of the Belle of the Ball program, providing free formal gowns to girls who may not be able to afford them. We’re also offering career development services to help girls think beyond the dress. Although large shopping events weren’t possible during the pandemic, girls had the opportunity to schedule individual shopping appointments to choose the dress of their dreams.

Shining Through a Rigorous Review

Sweats for Vets

Goodwill partnered with VFW Auxiliary Post 2550 in St. Petersburg to host a clothing drive for veterans in September. More than $3,600 worth of clothing was collected at our Pinellas County stores for veterans served through the Bay Pines Healthcare System.

Goodwill-Suncoast has earned another three-year accreditation from CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, following a rigorous review of our programs and operations in January. In the final report, reviewers noted that our commitment to people, the community and the mission are demonstrated through excellence in all areas of operation. CARF accreditation is the highest endorsement awarded to agencies providing community integration and employment services for people with disabilities.

Safe Halloween Treats

Our stores delighted customers by dispensing treats through Kooky, Spooky Candy Chutes on Halloween to help children celebrate the holiday safely in a socially-distanced world.

At One With Tampa Bay

The Tampa Bay Business Journal named Goodwill-Suncoast as a One Tampa Bay honoree announced in October 2020. Goodwill was one of 21 nonprofits recognized for going above and beyond in giving back to the community.

JET Certified Builds Resumes & Relationships

Chelewa Springs grins with pride when she talks about her employees from the Goodwill JET Certified program. She knows each worker’s skill sets and talents; she brims with stories of their achievements. These are workers that in other circumstances may not shine. But with a little investment of time, Chelewa, the general manager of SpringHill Suites of Ocala, has created a community of hard work and camaraderie with program participants and her full-time staff alike. “These young people are passionate and show up to work every day,” Chelewa said. “They’re invested in being here.” With COVID-19 bringing travel and tourism to a grinding halt, the JET (Job Education Training) Certified program should have had little chance of survival in the hospitality industry. The JET Certified program expanded upon the existing JET program by including a certification course alongside on-the-job training and mentorship for both adults and students, something they could have in their toolbox when they began applying for jobs. Last year, Derek Arnold, manager of community employment initiatives for Goodwill-Suncoast, was preparing himself to hear “no” from SpringHill Suites, a property of HDG Hotels. At most, he was expecting a “not now.” But what he got was “an emphatic yes,” he said.

Chelewa brought the program into reality. Despite the looming uncertainty of the pandemic last year, she wanted her hotel in the program. In partnership, the JET Certified program launched in June 2020, and started a similar program in Citrus County at another HDG site. Since then, 15 adults and two students entered this hospitality program in Ocala, and nine at the Citrus County location. Participants were able to get American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) Certification in Guest Services, and get experience in maintenance, front desk, laundry and housekeeping. In retail and food service, JET Certified has begun programs at Burlington and Blue Highway Pizza in Ocala, and Crumps Landing restaurant in Citrus County, with certifications appropriate for those industries. The pandemic helped the program in Ocala sprout. Because there was a lull in occupancy, it allowed Chelewa to spend time with both program participants and her own staff, making sure they were ready to mentor participants joining their team. She selected staff who were willing and able to spend the time to be a good mentor and take the time with each participant to help them learn and succeed. “We place them with people they will learn from, and those who are open to doing it,” she said. The goal of the program is to help participants build a resume of their certification and skills to find a job after completion. But some of them didn’t have to look far for employment – Chelewa hired them at SpringHill Suites. “In one year, this was a success,” Derek said.
