ZEBRA HITS THE ROAD CELEBRATING 50+ YEARS TOGETHER
by Rich Branciforte It is hard to believe that it is 47 years since the readers of Good Times voted Zebra “Best New Band” in our annual Best Band Issue. The boys surely have been doing something right, they’re now in their 51st year together, and about to embark on their biggest promotion ever, “Zebra Weekend.” The weekend is part of a huge promotion to celebrate the release of their first studio album in 23 years. It will be released on November 13th, and a week of fun follows. On November 13th and 14th they will do shows at the Patchogue Theatre, and will also do two in store album signings at Looney Tunes and Record Stop on November 15th. In a time when marriages barely last ten years on average, how has Zebra managed to keep together? They’ve become the longest running American rock band still touring with all their original members. We caught up with Randy Jackson in New Orleans, where he was enjoying some time before the tour. Randy believes that the band has survived because they have become like family. They may argue or disagree, but they have a unique relationship that means they can work everything out. I’ve followed Zebra since day 1, but learned a lot of new stuff from interviewing Randy. Randy met Felix out of high school. Felix had a band, Shepherd’s Bush. Through the owner of the local club, The Library, he was introduced to Felix and they hit it off and started to play together. Guy was from Sacramento and that same owner was instrumental in introducing them. The boys wandered into the wild blue yonder of Long Island when Lee Feldman, who owned the 1890’s club in Baldwin heard about them and asked them to come North, promising them a tour of local clubs. After several false starts, they finally arrived here, and wound up living at Lee’s house, after buying PA equipment in Memphis. They arrived, and played places like Chaucer’s Ale House, before hitting their stride with gigs at Hammerheads and Rumbottoms, where they became regulars, along with Twisted Sister. Phil Basile, took them under his wing as manager.

SPORTS BEAT Longtime Mets radio voice Howie Rose called it a career last month. Recent ailments, as well as a desire to stay in Florida and work on his golf game, led to the decision. In what may have been a metaphor for the 2026 Mets season, it rained the day he was supposed to be honored, which was the Mets’ last home game of the year. Rose will be feted with an onfield ceremony in 2027. At his farewell press conference, I asked Howie if any of the various networks ever contacted him to do play-byplay. “I never had the desire to be a national sportscaster. I was happy calling the games of the two teams (Mets and Rangers) Photo by Lloyd Carroll who set my mood when I was younger. When we moved out of our apartment, the landlord discovered that!” he quipped. The day before, Mets centerfielder Carlos Beltran had his #15 uniform retired. Beltran spoke eloquently about how Mets fans challenged him, and how he now appreciated it even if it was difficult when it was happening at the time for him. Beltran told me he is still in touch with former Mets general manager Omar Minaya, who discovered him when he was an amateur player in Puerto Rico. Minaya was a scout for the Texas Rangers. It was Minaya who made the presentation to him which led him to sign with the Mets when he first became a free agent in 2005. I asked Carlos if he is in touch with Minaya now that he is working in the
Mets front office while Minaya is working with Yankees GM Brian Cashman. “Absolutely. Omar is a source of wisdom and is a true mentor.” Pete Alonso proved Thomas Wolfe wrong when he returned to Citi Field last month and slugged career home runs #300 and 301 in leading the Orioles to a three-game sweep of the Mets. I asked him if the fact he had visited Yankee Stadium twice during the season helped prepare him for his return to Flushing. “Being in New York is always special to me. It is not just baseball. My wife and I love the culture. My grandparents emigrated to the US through Ellis Island and settled in Queens.” While he praised Orioles’ management for giving him a huge contract, it was clear he was wistful about not being able to continue his career as a Met.

The 25th anniversary of 9/11 was marked by our local teams as both the Mets sent alumni, while the Yankees sent their current stars to New York firehouses. The MLB Network debuted a terrific documentary, “When America Took the Field,” whose executive producer is former Met, and current SNY analyst, Todd Zeile. While New York is understandably the focus of it, the documentary takes pains to show how the entire country was affected. “Go Deep: The DeSean Jackson Story” is a remarkable Prime Video
documentary about the former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver. Jackson was a terrific player, but he was not the kind of star athlete who typically gets this kind of media treatment. What makes “Go Deep” fascinating is that DeSean is a secondary character in his own story. What is fascinating is how his older brother, Byron, a former wide receiver on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad who eventually became a film director, recognized DeSean’s talent at an early age, and filmed his accomplishments on the gridiron from Pop Warner to the NFL. The protagonist

of “Go Deep” is their late father, Bill, who is the sports version of a stage mother. His belief was the only way to economic success was to be an NFL star. The intra-family friction was inevitable. To his credit, Byron Jackson does not sugarcoat anything here. A football documentary with a delightfully lighter tone is HBO’s “Miller Night Football” which looks back at the two years (2000 and 2001) in which comedian Dennis Miller was part of the ABC “Monday Night Football” broadcasting team along with Al Michaels and Dan Fouts. Miller, was, and still is, a very cerebral comedian who can work in humorous pop culture and historic references in milliseconds. He was brought in to attract casual sports fans who wanted entertainment mixed in with the athletics. Dennis Miller had unfortunate timing, however. 9/11 happened early in his second season on the “MNF” team, and he understandably felt self-conscious about going for chuckles. At the end of 2001, John Madden decided to leave FOX Sports. He had his eye set on “Monday Night Football.” As Dennis says at the end, “I knew I was going to be whacked.” PGA Tour chief executive Brian Rolapp, who for years was Roger Goodell’s top lieutenant at the NFL, was a guest on veteran sports media journalist Andrew Marchand’s “Off the Record” podcast. He said that one difference between the two behemoth sports organizations is there is a huge disparity between the NFL teams ranked close to the top and those at the bottom, while there is only a razor-thin difference between the top thirty professional golfers in the world.

The band’s colorful history will always remain significant, with former members including Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, Ed King, Billy Powell, Bob Burns, Leon Wilkeson and Hughie Thomasson having all been integral to different chapters of the band’s story. Formed in 1964, the multi-platinum rock band from Jacksonville, Fla., spent the bulk of that decade touring under a multitude of names before settling on their famous moniker and releasing their debut album, (Pronounced ‘Låh-’nérd ‘Skin-’nérd), in 1973. The following year, Lynyrd Skynyrd dropped their sophomore followup, the appropriately-titled Second Helping (1974), featuring their signature song “Sweet Home Alabama.” Between that Top 10 hit and fan favorite tracks like “Free Bird,”“Simple Man” and “Tuesday’s Gone,” the band became pioneers of the Southern rock genre.

PAUL ANKA COMING TO HARD ROCK LIVE Entertainment legend Paul Anka is coming to Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on Friday, December 4 at 8 PM. Tickets are on sale at HardRockHotelAtlanticCity.com and Ticketmaster.com. All shows are subject to change. Though he first emerged as a singer in the Sinatra mold, Paul Anka was really the first Justin Bieber — a ‘50s-era prototype for the teen idol. Born in Ottawa, Anka was determined to become a pop star before he hit high school, and after pounding the music-industry pavement in L.A. and New York, he scored an international No. 1 smash with the breezy, brassy confection, “Diana,” released in 1957 on the eve of his 16th birthday. The hit streak would continue with charmingly self-deprecating ballads like “Lonely Boy” and “Put Your Head on My Shoulder.” As his style of innocent, prom-dance pop was displaced by the harder-edged rock ‘n’ roll sounds of the ‘60s, Anka also enjoyed a fruitful career as a composer, writing the theme song for The Tonight Show, as well as major hits for Tom Jones (“She’s a Lady”) and Frank Sinatra (“My Way”). 10 • Good Times Magazine October 13 - November 16, 2026

LONG ISLAND SOUNDS JOHN LYDON, PUBLIC IMAGE LTD. AND A NIGHT OF RAW ENERGY
Punk and Post Punk as it ought to be, as it was, energized a packed Webster Hall in Manhattan on September 28. Plague Vendor, the opening band for Public Image Ltd., did a blistering 12 songs in a half hour. Frontman Brandon Blaine body-surfed on top of the audience, leapt from the tops of speakers, jack-knifed splits on the floor, while still hitting those sharp vocals. Public Image Limited (PiL) played their first stop in North America for “This Is Not The Last Tour.” John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten of The Sex Pistols, formed Public Image Ltd. in 1978 after his seminal punk band disbanded in 1978. PiL opened with “Home.” Their 1984 song, “World Destruction,” is just as relevant today:“Nationalities are fighting with each other. Why is this? Because the system tells you. Putting people in faceless categories. Knowledge isn’t what it used to be.” Next came, “This is Not a Love Song.” “Swan Lake” had a great beat, synthesizers, and an almost psychedelic feel. Lydon’s deep howls during the song could be from the loss of his wife of 44 years, Nora, and his lifelong friend and Manager, John Rambo Stevens. Both died in 2023.“Seeing in your eyes. Words can never say the way. Told me in your eyes. Final in a fade. Never no more hope away,” Lydon sang. This bled into “Warrior,” with the lyrics: “Some of us wake up. Others roll over. But not I. I’m a warrior.” Lydon’s trademark irreverence clearly came through with the next song, “Shoom:” “Fuck you. Fuck off. Fuck sex. Is bollocks. ll sex is bollocks. S sex is bollocks. Success. It’s bollocks la la.” The voice reverberation, keyboards, and driving rhythm made “Open Up” fun and upbeat. The crowd chanted, “Anger is an energy,” along with John Lydon for the song “Rise.” PiL’s encore was a cover of David Bowie song, “John, I’m Only Dancing.” Their 90-minute, 12-song show was before a sold-out hall of around 1,500 people. The Sex Pistols recorded only one studio album, “Never Mind The Bullocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols.” Public Image Lt. will release their 11th studio album in early 2027. John Lydon is the sole remaining band member from PiL’s original lineup.

“Yellow Submarine. John Lennon was writing a song before Lennon told Ringo, “You do this,” said Ringo at the concert. Ringo completed the mocking song, “I’m the Greatest,” although Lennon got the writing credit. Ringo and his band, Rory and the Hurricanes, were doing the cover song,“Boys,” before joining The Beatles. He played it in 1964 and on October 1st in Forest Hills. Ringo’s solo work was even better with songs like “It Don’t Come Easy” and “Photograph.” Ringo sang the cover, “Act Naturally,” with The Beatles and at this concert. “The sentiment of this song is the only reason why I’m on stage tonight,” said Ringo before singing the anti-drug “No, No Song.” “Choose Love” is a song Ringo re-recorded on his 2026 country album, “Long, Long Road.”The flute, keyboards, and lyrics,“To live your life right, you’ve got to let in the light. And let all the darkness go,” made the song poignant. Guitarist Colin Hay, an original member of the 1980s band Men at Work, did “Down Under” and “Who Can It Be Now,” which sounded studio-fresh. Guitarist and Singer, Steve Lukather of the band Toto sang “Hold the Line,” featuring Lukather’s guitar solos. “Rosanna” and “Africa” contributed to the fun night. Guitarist Hamish Stuart from the Average White Band did the 1970s funky songs, “Pick Up the Pieces” and “Cut the Cake.” Gregg Bissonette was on drums at the same time as Ringo and solo. When most of the seven band members sang backup vocals at the same time, it gave the songs more punch. After eight songs, Ringo took “a tea break.” Three songs, about 15-20 minutes later, he was back. The nearly 2-hour show featured 23 songs. They closed with The Beatles’ song “With a Little Help From My Friends,” and an encore of “Give Peace a Chance.” Ringo frequently flashed the peace sign with his fingers, wore a peace necklace, a large peace symbol on his black shirt, and three large peace signs were on the screen behind him while closing the show.
RINGO STARR’S ALL STARR BAND DELIVERS A NIGHT OF BEATLES, ’70S AND ’80S CLASSICS

WOMEN WHO ROCK
SIENNA SPIRO’S DEBUT ALBUM “VISITOR”
ANDIE CASE “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL” Singer-songwriter Andie Case continues to step confidently into the spotlight as an original artist with “Speak of the Devil,” a sharp, emotionally charged new track that captures the tension, temptation and vulnerability that have become hallmarks of her latest body of work. Clocking in at just over three minutes, “Speak of the Devil” wastes little time making its presence felt. Case has always possessed the kind of voice capable of turning heads, but here the appeal goes beyond vocal firepower. There is personality in the performance, an immediacy that makes the song feel less like something being performed at the listener and more like being pulled into the middle of a complicated conversation. “Speak of the Devil” arrived as part of Case’s six-song EP, Show Me Yours, I’ll Show You Mine, released September 18th.
CHERRY BOMB ‘THE PURSUIT OF PLEASURE’ Cherry Bomb, the Los Angeles-based solo project of MisterWives’ Mandy Lee, announces her debut solo album, The Pursuit of Pleasure, out November 13. For over a decade, the independent singersongwriter has been nothing but a force in the alt pop scene, captivating crowds with commanding live performances and stunning vocals, and now, with the explosive new record, she’s ready to offer a sound that’s electric, euphoric, and powerful. To celebrate, Cherry Bomb shares “Crash!”, a hardhitting dance pop single that finds empowerment in going absolutely off the rails. On the new single, the indie pop artist says,” Crash!” is for your next crash out!”
Released less than three months ago, SIENNA SPIRO’s debut album Visitor is now RIAA-certified Gold. SIENNA was presented with a custom plaque commemorating the milestone during her Spotlight appearance at The GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles, where she discussed the album and her creative process, and gave a special performance to an audience at the Museum’s intimate 200-seat Clive Davis Theater. The honor follows SIENNA’s standout showing at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, where she took home the trophy for Best New Artist—watch her short but sweet acceptance speech- and inspired a standing ovation with her rendition of “Great Expectation.” The London-born phenom sang from a massive replica of a turntable flanked by an expanded band that included strings and horns. Building on her recent debuts at Lollapalooza and Outside Lands, SIENNAl launches the North American leg of her “My House” World Tour.

THEATER: THRILLING REVIVALS AND NEW GEMS ILLUMINATE BROADWAY The New York Times wrote in its review of Playwrights Horizons 2022 production of “Downstate”: “How much retribution is enough? And what of compassion — bestowed on whom — is too much? Let the wrestling with your conscience begin.” Pulitzer Prize-winner Bruce Norris’ (“Clybourne Park”) intense, gripping drama is one of the most highly-anticipated Broadway debuts this season. Set in a group residence for sex offenders, it examines the circumscribed lives of four men convicted of sex crimes against minors, the restrictions on where they can live and the boundaries set by neighbors. When a survivor arrives, demanding to confront his abuser, their precarious, pressure-cooker existence is threatened. K. Todd Freedman and Francis Guinan reprise their lauded performances as two of the sex offenders, and the marvelous Liza Colón-Zayas (“The Bear”) plays the men’s case worker. Cassie Beck, Adrian Martinez, Al’Jaleel McGhee, Thomas Sadoski, Ivy Wolk round out the cast under Joe Mantello’s direction. Previews begin October 17. (Booth Theatre) downstatebroadway.com Lin-Manuel Miranda’s joyous breakthrough musical “In the Heights” is getting its first revival in a limited gala presentation by the Encores! series at City Center. Conceived, written and originally starring Miranda (Off and on Broadway starting in 2007), the Tony Award-winning musical (with book by Quiara Alegria Hudes) set during three hot July days in Washington Heights, celebrates community, Latino culture and aspirational dreams through the infectious rhythms of hip-hop, salsa and merengue. Matte Martinez, Tony-winner Natalie Venetia Belcon, Linedy Genao and Ashley De La Rosa head the cast under the direction of David Mendizábal. Runs October 28 through November 15. Lincoln Center Theater presents the first Broadway revival of Aaron Sorkin’s riveting 1989 courtroom thriller “A Few Good Men.” Directed by six-time Tony-winner Michael Arden (“Maybe Happy Ending”) and starring Emmy-winner Bradley Whitford (Sorkin’s “West Wing”), Tom Blyth and Krysta Rodriguez, the tense morality tale centers on the court-martial of two young Marines accused of murdering an enlisted man in a trial that implicates them in a larger conspiracy plot. (Vivian Beaumont Theatre) lct.org/shows/a-few-good-men/ Andrew Scott (“Elsinore,” Vanya,” “Fleabag”) stars Off-Broadway for 19 performances in a most unusual one-of-a-kind theatrical event: Simon Stephens’ “Sea Wall” (which was written for Scott, who starred in a 2008 short film version) has been reconceived as stage-to-film special about the creation of theater. Scott’s live performances, as well as footage from backstage and in the house “with the audience at each performance serving as an essential character in the feature,” will be shaped into a film directed by Peabody Award-winner Tina Satter. (Seaview Studios) https://studioseaview.com/ show/sea-wall/ “Wanted,” is an original musical about Mary and Martha Clarke, twin Black sisters (played by Solea Pfeiffer and Liisi LaFontaine) who pass as white in late 19th-century Texas. Driven to desperate measures, they become vigilante outlaws and go on the run to save their mother’s and their family’s legacy. With a book and lyrics by Angelica Cheri, a descendent of the sisters, and music by Ross Baum, the musical, which had premiered under the title “Guns and Roses,” also stars Ledisi, Luke James and Bradley Jaden under the direction of Stevie Walker-Webb. MÖTLEY CRÜE CELEBRATES 45 YEARS
“Do You Remember? Well, We Remember.” Forty-five years ago, Mötley Crüe introduced themselves to the world with a record that was raw and unapologetic and launched one of rock’s most notorious and enduring careers. Now, Mötley Crüe announced a special 45th Anniversary Limited Edition Box Set of their legendary debut Photo by Don Adkins album Too Fast For Love, out October 30th, via BMG. One of the best debut albums of all time,Too Fast For Love was the first great Los Angeles hard rock album of the ‘80s, helping kick open the doors for that decade’s fertile Hollywood rock scene, as well as the signing frenzy and imitators that followed. The centerpiece of the 45th anniversary celebration is a limited edition deluxe box set that includes the 1981 Leathür Records version (which sells for thousands of dollars when one becomes available), the 1982 Elektra Records version, live recordings from the legendary Perkins Palace shows in 1982 (previewing tracks from 1983’s epic Shout At The Devil), never-before-released 5-track 1LP featuring demos from the band’s first-ever studio sessions from March 1981, replica demo cassette, replica 7” single, 100-page hardcover photo book, replica poster and more.
BANANARAMA 40TH ANNY TRUE CONFESSIONS
In 1986 Bananarama took “Venus,” their most commercially successful single, to its peak position of #1 on the US Billboard Top 100 and Billboard Dance Charts. Its American success was the tip of a very large iceberg: To celebrate 40 years of True Confessions, London Records has reissued the album across a multitude of formats available from the Official Bananarama Store. The original members of the band signed 3 special editions of the album, one featuring Sara, Keren and Siobhan housed in unique individual sleeves. Each version features the original album plus audio from each band member on their recollections around the album, as well as a bonus secret track. Also released were three extra digital versions, each one with unique artwork. For a very limited time iTunes hosts two new editions: a Rarities Edition (including the lost ‘Kelly’s Eye’ version of “Do Not Disturb”) and a Remix Edition with full versions of 2026 remixes by Richard X, Luke Mornay, The Alias and AMYL, as well as rare remixes by Leo Zero and original 1986 versions.

HATEBREED SHARE “THE CARRION CHOIR”
Studied, imitated, but never replicated, the Grammy-nominated hardcore legends HATEBREED will drop their long-awaited studio album FATAL PARADOX on November 6 via new label BLKIIBLK. Enlisting long-time collaborator Zeuss (Rob Zombie, Accept, Shadows Fall),“Kill Count Increase” is crossover excellence with accelerating speeds, crushing riffage, and frontman Jamey Jasta’s venomous bark inciting crimson flashes of carnage. Holding no punches, and taking no prisoners, Fatal Paradox see the Connecticut-born juggernaut operating at full tilt, bludgeoning listeners with a barbarous blend of breakdowns, d-beats, and dogpiles. Whether it’s the thrash stylings of “Kill Count Increase” or “Total Invincible,” capital H hardcore excellence of “The Carrion Choir” and “Truth Is A Lion,” rage remains the unifying spark to blow the keg in glorious flashes of violence.
ANTHRAX’S ‘CURSUM PERFICIO’
ANTHRAX released their 12th full-length studio album CURSUM PERFICIO via Megaforce Records along with a video for the album’s title track. To celebrate the album’s release, the multi-GRAMMY® Award-nominated New York hard rock titans—Scott Ian (guitar), Charlie Benante (drums), Frank Bello (bass), Joey Belladonna (vocals), and Jonathan Donais (guitar) joined fans at a late night, in-store signing at Louisville’s Guestroom Records. For the album’s title track “Cursum Perficio,” the band have debuted a new black and white video that captures the song’s tone and message. Director Don Argott (Taylor Swift docu-series) utilized his vérité-style footage with narrative elements for the clip that stars actor London May (American musician and actor who’s also known as the drummer and bassist for Glenn Danzig’s post–Misfits/pre–Danzig band Samhain). The band dove into recording CURSUM PERFICIO in earnest during 2022, working out of Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 in Los Angeles. They carefully pieced together what would be this magnum opus, mining their history with reverence, delivering on fan expectations tenfold, and broadening the scope of their signature sound. Produced by Jay Ruston and ANTHRAX, the result is an album that’s as angry, aggressive, and alive as their most celebrated fare.
ACCEPT RE-RENDITION OF “LOSERS AND WINNERS”
More than sixty years after it was recorded, a previously unreleased Peggy Lee original has been discovered in the Capitol Records vaults. Capitol Records and Universal Music Enterprises (UMe), in conjunction with Peggy Lee Associates, announced the first-ever release of “Since You Have Gone,” the title track from a new digital EP of the same name, paired with three of Lee’s signature recordings: “Big Spender,” “Fever,” and “Why Don’t You Do Right?” and accompanied by a new visualizer for “Since You Have Gone.” Featuring both words and music by Lee, the song was recorded at the Capitol Tower in Hollywood on November 2, 1963, with a cinematic arrangement by West Coast jazz pioneer Shorty Rogers. The recording remained unheard for nearly 63 years before surfacing through ongoing archival research into Lee’s extraordinary body of work.
Gearing up for the release of the manifesto of metal Teutonic Titans 1976-2026 heavy metal force ACCEPT unveil the final single with a new version of “Losers and Winners!” Originally appearing on Balls to the Wall (1983), the re-rendition of the track shines with guest vocals by Hansi Kürsch, guitar by Paul Gilbert, bass by Chuck Garric, and Tommy Aldridge on drums. Marking ACCEPT’s 50th anniversary, Teutonic Titans 1976-2026 contains 19 re-recorded songs from the band’s iconic catalogue, produced, mixed, and mastered by the legendary Zeuss, and features 50 A-list guest artists. The fourth single off of the album,“Losers and Winners,” serves as further impressive proof of ACCEPT staying relevant and powerful throughout their 50-year career. Led by guitarist Wolf Hoffmann, the longtime architect of ACCEPT’s sound, the band is joined by a staggering 50 guests across 19 reimagined versions of their biggest tracks.Teutonic Titans 1976-2026 is ACCEPT’s most ambitious and star-studded release to date, reaching far beyond the borders of their country of origin. Featuring the biggest names in heavy music paying tribute to the German icons, the record cements the band’s standing on the global stage. This is more than an album; it is a manifesto of metal!

ERASURE NEW STUDIO ALBUM
Erasure - Andy Bell & Vince Clarke - launch their 20th album release, Radio!! Radio!! with a new track, ‘Wings Of Love’, alongside details of an arena tour in April / May 2027 across the UK and Europe, with North American dates to be announced. Radio!! Radio!! finds one of contemporary pop music’s greatest, most beloved songwriting partnerships creating music that’s hopeful and defiant, effusive and ecstatic. New single ‘Wings Of Love’, which premiered on BBC Radio 2, is already a classic slice of perfect, glassy synthpop, one that captures the human heart of the new album, with Bell singing about love and loneliness, and his gratitude for all those he’s appreciated in his life. The songs on Radio!!
