LONG ISLAND IN THE ’70s

The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook is bringing the 1970s back to life – with a wide range of art and artifacts that go far beyond the orange shag carpets, platform shoes, avocado-colored walls, and disco fashions that defined the decade for many Long Islanders. The exhibition features more than 100 artifacts showcasing this layered and complex era on Long Island – a time when Long Island’s social, political, and demographic shifts fueled cultural and artistic innovation, even as the era was characterized by newly emerging vulnerabilities.

The exhibition, Long Island in the ’70s, will be on view at The Long Island Museum’s History Museum, located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, from May 14th through October 18th. Building on LIM’s previous popular exhibitions of the 1950s and 1960s, the exhibit brings together a unique array of items from this distinct decade -- from clothing and paintings to photographs, music, and pop culture objects. Within the exhibition, visitors can also explore immersive displays, including two vignettes featuring a fully realized suburban living room (including a matching couch and chair purchased from Ethan Allen, c. 1970s and a Zenith color 21” console television set) and a front house facade, yard, and driveway – offering a vivid look at a decade that continues to shape life today

Exhibition viewing hours at The Long Island Museum are Thursdays from 11:30 PM - 7 PM, and Fridays through Sundays from noon until 5 PM. For more information visit www.longislandmuseum.org.

Across more than seven decades, his singular sound, boundless creativity, and adventurous spirit inspired generations of musicians. In this special tribute, acclaimed saxophonist Eric Alexander celebrates Rollins’ enduring legacy, leading an exceptional quintet featuring renowned trumpeter Nicholas Payton and a stellar rhythm section of pianist David Kikoski, bassist Alexander Claffy, and drummer Carl Allen.

MOMI CELEBRATES AMERICA’S 250TH ANNIVERSARY

As our country celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the founding document of the United States, Museum of the Moving Image will present the screening series By the People, For the People: Real American Tales, through July 5, featuring films that take on the perspective of the nation’s historically marginalized and less frequently represented on screen.

From films about collective labor and the underclass as explored in The Grapes of Wrath, Matewan, and Days of Heaven, to immigrant communities in The Exiles and Los Sures, and the disenfranchised in films such as Nothing but a Man and Buddies, these films ask what the term “American cinema” means—and what it perhaps could mean in an ideal world.

THEATER: JUNE TREATS

“Celebrity Autobiography” is the perfect tonic for the post-awards season lull. Hailed by the New York Times as “a merry compendium of the witlessness of the rich and famous,” the longtime international comedy favorite makes its Broadway debut this summer after engagements at the Triad Off-Broadway (where it earned a Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience) and the Groundlings in Los Angeles. A rotating and ever-expanding roster of film, TV, stage and sports celebrities — including Jason Alexander, Matthew Broderick, Katie Couric, Kathy Griffin, Christopher Jackson, Andrea Martin, Kenan Thompson, Tony Shalhoub among many others — act out the unintentionally hilarious autobiographies of fellow celebrities. Created, developed and directed by hosts and performers Eugene Pack and Dayle Reyel, the show revels in the gap between fame and self-awareness. (Shubert Theatre) celebrityautobiography.com/ In the Off-Broadway revival of Eric Bentley’s 1972 docudrama “Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been,” an ever-changing cast — including Andrew McCarthy, Sally Murphy, Jay O. Sanders, Brooks Ashmanskas, Michael McKean, Santino Fontana, T.R. Knight, Harry Lennix, Bob Odenkirk, Steven Pasquale, Molly Ringwald and Thomas Sadoski — reads the testimony before the House Committee on Un-American Activities hearings of artists such as Arthur Miller, Jerome Robbins, Paul Robeson and Elia Kazan. “Birthright,” the latest play by last year’s Tony, Drama Desk and Drama League Award-winner Jonathan Spector (“Eureka Day”), follows the relationships between six young American Jews of Ashkenazi descent who become friends on a rite-of-passage trip to Israel in 2006. The play examines the evolving political, religious and personal convictions which challenge their relationships and identities when they reconnect in 2016 and again in 2024. Directed by Teddy Bergman, “Birthright” questions — as the world shifts around them — “How do we carry the weight of history? How do we define who we are, and who we want to be?” (MCC Theatre) mcctheater.org/tix/birthright/ Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok (“Cost of Living”) has adapted Susanna Kaysen’s bestselling 1993 memoir “Girl, Interrupted” into a theatrical event with songs by two-time Grammy-winner Aimee Mann, choreography by Tony-winner Sonya Tayeh and direction by Jo Bonney. In the memory play, 38-year-old Susanna (Juliana Canfield) recalls the two years when she was committed to McLean psychiatric hospital at 18, and the other patients who shared that experience including the troubled and charismatic Lisa, played by recording artist King Princess. BOUNTIFUL GOURMET - MAMA’S

Christmas came early for mid-Nassau Italian food lovers. Let me explain! For the past 20 years we have driven to Copiague to dine at one of our favorite Italian restaurants, Mama’s. It was well worth the ride, the food is spectacular, reasonably priced and service and atmosphere is outstanding.

Imagine our delight when we learned that after 50 years in Copiague, Mama’s was expanding with a second location in Carle Place. This Is great news, it is 10 minutes from my house and 5 minutes from the Good Times office. Thank you Santa!

In the interest of science and to make sure our readers are well informed, we stopped by recently on Monday Pasta Day. Yes, the special is $21.95 all day. Keep in mind that all prices quoted are in cash.

The new Mama’s is a big beautiful restaurant, in the same shopping center as Fogo de Chao. It is sleek and appealing.

On entering, you are overwhelmed with the famous Mama’s pizza selections. These are huge slices, there are at least 30 varieties, and the chicken slices seem to have a half pound or more of chicken. Our favorite has always been the sweet chili chicken slice, and we were glad to see it right up front.

Seated, we were greeted with a big basket of delicious garlic knots, maybe 10 to the basket, covered in grated cheese. Right out of the oven, a perfect starter.

The chicken parm was magnificent, 3 gigantic cutlets covered in vodka sauce. I was delighted since I prefer vodka sauce to traditional tomato. Each time platters of food were brought out, there were oohs and aahs from other diners. The portions can

only be described as gargantuan. The chicken was tender, and it comes with pasta. We opted for the rigatoni with tomato sauce which was cooked to perfection. The meal comes with a huge salad, plus New York cheesecake for dessert. All for one low price.

A more adventurous soul at the table opted for the Penne Antonio, delicious sauteed chicken in pink cream tomato sauce with mushrooms and peas and pasta.

I would also recommend the rigatoni carbonara, which I’ve probably had a dozen times at the Copaigue location. By the way, there were 45 choices for pasta night, each with a unique delicious twist.

Wednesday is Steak Day, where $54.95 buys you a 14 oz boneless ribeye, New York strip skirt steak, or stuffed veal chop. Thursday is Chicken night and the choices are endless.

An off menu item we need to try is the lobster stuffed chicken served over baby shrimp and pasta alla vodka.

Don’t miss out on one of the most enjoyable meals you’ll ever have. Call 631-240-4440 for reservations.

Fun fact, Mama’s is located at 231 Old Country Rd, Carle Place, inside the same building where Phil Basile’s 231 Club once stood.

Great food, great prices, impeccable service, beautiful surroundings. What more can you ask for?

SPORTS BEAT

The various television networks and streaming services held their presentations of upcoming programming for advertisers and the press last month. Even as recently as a decade ago, sports were an afterthought as scripted entertainment shows garnered the lion’s share of the attention. As Bob Dylan famously sang, things have changed. Sports are now the leading driver as everyone wants to watch it live and that commands premium ad dollars.

Disney, which owns ESPN, touted the fact the Worldwide Leader in Sports has broadcast rights to the four major sports. You must give new Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro credit for not trying to patronize an audience of New York-based ad buyers. D’Amaro, who grew up near Boston, declared his fandom for the Boston Celtics. To win back the goodwill of his audience, he quickly brought Knicks superstar Jalen Brunson to the Javits Center stage.

Baseball’s answer to the Harlem Globetrotters, the Savannah Bananas, have TV deals with TBS, Roku, YouTube, and now they are expanding their

relationship with Disney. ESPN Unlimited and Disney Plus streamers will be televising the “Banana Ball’ Playoffs this fall, according to Savannah Bananas founder Jessie Cole. In addition, Savannah Bananas player Jackson Olson will be participating in ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” this fall.

And yes, ABC and ESPN will be televising the 2027 Super Bowl. Expect Peyton and Eli Manning to do a Manningcast on ESPN2 on February 14.

NBC is celebrating its centennial this year with a primetime special which will air on December 10. NBC was also the #1 broadcast network this year thanks to having the rights to Super Bowl LV, and the Olympics.

The big NBC Sports news from Radio City Music Hall was the welcoming of former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin to the “Sunday Night Football” studio team by Mike Tirico, and Commack High School alum, Bob Costas. Tomlin replaces the dull Tony Dungy who signed his own pink slip by refusing to say whether he voted for Bill Belichick for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame when asked by fellow “SNF” pundit Rodney Harrison. NBC Sports executives figured that if they could not give them a scoop, then why keep him?

FOX Sports has the English language broadcast rights to the FIFA World Cup, so it was the main topic of conversation at the FOX Upfront. The only problem was Michael Strahan and Rob Gronkowski seemed far more comfortable discussing football rather than futbol. The funniest moment of Upfront Week was when the announcer introduced Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, and David Oritz. “Here are three guys who think the Met Gala is a doubleheader at Citi Field!” he said.

Jessie Cole Photo credit: Disney
Michael Strahan

At the Warner Brothers Discovery Upfront, Shaquille O’Neal hit the stage to promote his “Dunkman” competition reality series, and he touted TNT’s slate of college hoops. Shaq was also at the Disney Upfront since he is part of their “Inside the NBA” studio team.

Telemundo will have the Spanish language broadcasting rights in the USA for old school linear television. Its sister network, Universo, will have them on cable, while streamer Peacock should have them all in Spanish. Telemundo will also be broadcasting NBC’s Sunday Night Baseball package in Spanish. If Spanish is your second language, this is a terrific way to enhance your bilingual skills.

Televisa Univision sports executives promoted the fact that their network shows more hours of soccer around the world than any other broadcast network. They handled the World Cup elephant in the room by saying they don’t just show up every four years for the sport.

While they do not have the World Cup, Univision executives made the surprising announcement that it had reached a deal with ESPN to televise Super Bowl LXI. To celebrate, Univision brought new Giants head coach John Harbaugh to the Terminal 5 stage.

Whereas most athletes stiffly read off a Teleprompter, Harbaugh spoke extemporaneously about the 2013 Super Bowl where he and his Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers who were coached by his brother, Jim. He admitted he had avoided talking about that game for years with Jim because he did not want to make him feel bad. The ice was finally broken last year when Jim said that it was a great day for the Harbaugh family.

Prime Video, a division of Amazon, touted the success of its “Thursday Night Football” package, and announced its first game would pit the Detroit Lions against the Buffalo Bills who will be opening their new stadium that day. Prime Video will also be showing Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball games this fall.

On the entertainment side, Prime Video is teaming up with Michael B. Jordan’s production company for a series about Muhammad Ali. Actor Jaalen Best will portray Ali in the show, which naturally be called, “The Greatest.”

Netflix will once again be the home for NFL Christmas Day games. Ian Eagle will do the play-by-play duties for the Dallas Cowboys-Washington Commanders game. Netflix is also bringing back its “Quarterback” series for a third season. Baker Mayfield, Joe Flacco, Jayden Daniels, and Cam Ward are willing to have their lives on and off the field analyzed in this go-round.

Madonna, Shakira, and the South Korean boy band BTS will provide the entertainment at MetLife Stadium on July 19 as the halftime entertainment for the World Cup Final Halftime Show.

The album, written like a film score, is a 47-minute body of work that’s meant to be experienced from beginning to end.

All album tracks were recorded using only analogue synthesizers from the 1970s and 1980s, alongside live drums and electric bass. Every sound on the single, as well as across the upcoming album, was performed and recorded live in the room or generated through analogue machines. No samples were used. KIP MOORE DELIVERS “REASON TO BELIEVE”

METAL

ACCEPT CELEBRATE 50 YEARS

German heavy metal legends ACCEPT kick off their celebration of 50 historic years with a new version of their classic hit,“Fast as a Shark,” originally released on Restless and Wild in 1982. This new rendition of one of the genre’s most iconic songs features metal legends Phil Anselmo, Kirk Hammett, Mikkey Dee, and Billy Sheehan, alongside ACCEPT members Wolf Hoffmann and Mark Tornillo. This “metal supergroup” performance truly sets the tone for the entire upcoming album, Teutonic Titans 1976-2026, which is to be released on September 4 via Napalm Records. The album serves as both a celebration of the band’s history and the heavy metal genre itself, in which they played a pivotal and highly influential part. 19 timeless tracks, 50 iconic guests — and they’re starting “Fast as a Shark”!

Progressing through albums from their formative years, from I’m a Rebel (1980) to Eat the Heat (1989), ACCEPT present their songs with an all-new, allstar lineup, alongside the signature voice of Mark Tornillo and Wolf Hoffmann’s unmistakable riffs. By enlisting a “Who’s Who” of metal, no two songs on Teutonic Titans 1976-2026 are the same. Every track features a different combination of vocals, guitars, bass, and drums, giving each classic a fresh edge.

IRON MAIDEN SINGER PAUL DI’ANNO’S BATTLEZONE

Multi-platinum singer/songwriter Kip Moore has released his brand new album Reason To Believe, available everywhere through Virgin Music Group. Co-produced with Andrew DeRoberts (Stephen Wilson Jr., Tate McRae, Zac Brown Band), the album finds the Nashville-based artist confronting grief, faith, and the weight of time – documenting a man standing still long enough to hear himself think. Moore also shared the official music video for “The Darkness,” his “incredibly raw” (Whiskey Riff) new single, which was one of the first songs written for Reason To Believe with co-writer Luke Preston, ultimately setting the tone for the rest of the album.

Album highlights include the guitar-slinging lead single “Levee,” featuring guest vocals by Hillary Lindsey. The pensive, soul-stirring follow-up “Faith in the Wind” prompted Country Central to rave “This musing cut is right in his wheelhouse,” while All Country News stated “he doubles down on the kind of restless, soul-searching storytelling that has long set him apart in the country landscape.”

DEEP PURPLE NEW SINGLE “ARROGANT BOY”

DEEP PURPLE have debuted the first single and video for the powerful, fast-paced hard rock tune “Arrogant Boy.” It’s the initial musical statement from SPLAT! the band’s new studio album set for a July 3 release on earMUSIC. The official music video for the track is a live performance clip which premiered on YouTube.

DEEP PURPLE consists of Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Don Airey, and Simon McBride

The single arrives one week after DEEP PURPLE announced their new studio album SPLAT! Once again, the band has teamed up with producer Bob Ezrin, continuing a collaboration that has shaped the band’s recent studio albums, all of which reached #1 on the album charts in multiple countries. At the heart of SPLAT! is an idea conceived by Ian Gillan. Rather than treating the end as destruction, the album imagines it as transformation: SPLAT! explores the end of humanity not in any crude apocalyptic sense but as a metamorphosis beyond physical existence.

In 1986, legendary vocalist Paul Di’Anno who was the unmistakable original voice behind Iron Maiden’s formative years launched a bold new chapter with the release of Fighting Back, the explosive debut album from Battlezone. Following his departure from Iron Maiden, Di’Anno refused to look backward. Instead, he forged ahead, assembling Battlezone to deliver a fresh assault of raw British heavy metal power. Originally released through Raw Power Records in the UK, Fighting Back captured Di’Anno’s unmistakable grit and intensity while showcasing a revitalized creative fire that reaffirmed his status as one of metal’s most commanding frontmen.

Featuring standout tracks including “Welcome to the Battlezone,” “Warchild,” “Running Blind,” and the title anthem “(Forever) Fighting Back,” the album fused aggressive riffs, streetwise energy, and melodic power into a statement of resilience and reinvention. Recorded in East London and produced by Ian Richardson alongside the band, the record introduced a formidable lineup featuring guitarists John Hurley and John Wiggins, bassist Pete West, and drummer Bob Falck.

AUDIOPHILE EDITION OF THE CAPTAIN AND ME

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MoFi) will release the definitive audiophile editions of two Doobie Brothers classics: the album that made the group superstars, 1973’s The Captain and Me, as well as 1974’s soulful What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits.

Sourced from the original analog master tapes (1/4” / 15 IPS Dolby A analog master to DSD 256 to analog console to lathe), pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing in California, and housed in a Stoughton gatefold jacket, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered-edition 180g 45RPM 2LP sets benefit from extraordinary soundstages, ultra-quiet backgrounds, big dynamics, and spot-on imaging. Producer Ted Templeman’s excellent production charms like never before.

Taking off on the commercial success of Toulouse Street, The Captain and Me propelled the Doobie Brothers to superstar status.

Having spent an entire year on the charts after its March 1973 release, the band’s third record features one classic after another.

PHIL OCHS TRIBUTE

Pat Wictor, Greg Greenway, and Reggie Harris will share the stage in this Hard Luck Café tribute to one of the greatest folk artists of the 1960s, the legendary Phil Ochs. Singer, guitarist, and lyricist Phil Ochs was a defining voice of the 1960s folk revival, known for his political insight and deeply literate songwriting. Emerging from the Greenwich Village scene alongside artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, Ochs distinguished himself as a “topical singer,” crafting songs that directly engaged with the social and political upheavals of his time.

His 1965 album I Ain’t Marching Anymore became an anthem of the anti–Vietnam War movement, cementing his role as a leading musical voice of protest. Combining poetic sophistication with a fearless political edge, he remains one of the most eloquent and uncompromising singer-songwriters of his generation.
