FILMMAKER DOCUMENTS WKWZ LEGACY
Syosset High School senior, filmmaker, secondgeneration DJ, and co–station manager Jason Feldman has completed The Subterranean Penthouse: The Story of WKWZ, a feature-length documentary celebrating WKWZ 88.5 FM — one of Long Island’s most influential student-run radio stations.

Founded in 1973, WKWZ has been broadcasting for more than 50 years, shaping generations of student broadcasters, producers, musicians, and storytellers. As its legacy began to fade, Feldman launched a mission to capture its history while the station’s original student pioneers, faculty advisors, and alumni were still here to tell the story
The documentary features exclusive interviews, neverbefore-seen archival footage, and emotional reflections from alumni whose careers trace directly back to their time in WKWZ’s iconic “subterranean penthouse” studio. From rock concerts and overnight music marathons to full-scale community events, WKWZ became far more than a high school radio station — it became a cultural force that launched careers in media and beyond.
The film is now available to view online at www. subterraneanpenthouse.com.

MANHATTANHENGE SEASON BEGINS
Four nights a year, the streets of Manhattan’s grid become the site of a stunning sunset phenomenon known as Manhattanhenge.During Manhattanhenge, the Sun sets in perfect alignment with Manhattan’s East-West numbered streets, creating dramatic photo opportunities.
Manhattanhenge dates start at the end of May: the half Sun will be visible on the grid on Thursday, May 28, at 8:14 PM, and the full Sun will be visible on Friday, May 29, at 8:13 PM. The second set of dates fall on Saturday, July 11, at 8:20 pm (full Sun) and Sunday, July 12 at 8:21 PM (half Sun). Between May 28 and July 12, viewers can see the “Manhattanhenge Effect,” where the Sun appears between the city grid as it is low in the sky and setting but doesn’t quite “kiss” the grid as it sets.

BARRY FISCH CONCERT PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT
Long Island’s Barry Fisch became interested in photography via a special elective course on the subject as a student at Bethpage High School in the 1970’s. As an avid concert goer, he’s been bringing his camera to shows (sometimes sneaking them in) for many decades. Never a professional photographer, never expensive equipment, yet Barry was able to capture some classic photos, all via the right place and the right time.
The Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame’s creative director Kevin O’Callaghan saw some of his work and commissioned him to do a photo exhibition at the building, his first exhibit ever. It is now on display as part of your regular admission into the Hall of Fame, which also includes the Everybody Loves Raymond Exhibit and a Billy Joel tribute. The exhibit is running indefinitely.
The Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame is located at 97 Main Street, Stony Brook, NY and is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 AM to 6 PM

SPORTS BEAT

April was the cruelest month for Mets fans as their team endured a long losing streak punctuated by noncompetitive at-bats, and shaky starting pitching yet again from David Peterson and Kodai Senga. Even worse news was the right calf injury to the team’s superstar outfielder, Juan Soto, which forced him onto the injured list. All teams suffer injuries to their top players during the season. The good ones find ways of overcoming those injuries with a “next man up” attitude. A longstanding problem with the Mets is their tendency to fall apart when adversity strikes. The somnambulant offense given Soto’s absence is yet another reminder of the Mets inferior on-field culture.
We have all seen those personal injury attorney commercials on TV. Andy Whiteoak, a writer for the sports website, Covers.com, has authored a satirical piece about how passionate baseball fans should be entitled to collect damages for emotional distress from the teams they follow. Whiteoak has the Mets at the top of his list as the team which should most compensate their fans for prolonged suffering. He jokingly sets the payout at $2,884 per fan.
Former New York Post baseball scribe Ken Davidoff, and pediatrician Dr. Harley Rotbart, have teamed up to write “101 Lessons from the Dugout” (Bloomsbury). The book shows how baseball rules, preparation, strategy, and
etiquette have corollaries for young people, the intended audience here, in everyday life.
Mets legend David Wright wrote the forward for “101 Lessons from the Dugout.” He tells how his daughter, Madisen, was struggling with mathematics. Wright told her that math was like sports. You must put the time and work in to improve your performance. She did, and her grades got better.
The authors discuss the importance of preparation, listening to parents and coaches, being a good teammate, sportsmanship, and never taking shortcuts. For those of us of a certain age, these things sound reminiscent of the timeless life lessons imparted in the classic “Gallant & Goofus” cartoon in Highlights Magazine.
The New York City Marathon will be taking place on November 1. This race will mark the 50th anniversary that the course switched from four laps around Central Park to the five-borough road race we all know. It will be a case of back to the future this year as the race’s sponsor, New York Road Runners will be returning to Central Park where the entire 26.2 miles will take place.
The crucial decision to expand the NYC Marathon out of Central Park and into the streets of the Big Apple is chronicled in Martin Dugard’s new book, “The Long Run” (Dutton). Dugard also uses the book to pay tribute to those great 1970s runners who put marathons on the sports map as Steve Prefontaine, Jim Ryun, Bill Rodgers, Frank Shorter, and Grete Waitz.
YouTube, which is presenting more original sports content, has a documentary series, “Challenge Accepted,” about daredevil Michelle Khare who ran seven marathons in seven continents in seven days.

Glamorous UConn star guard Azzi Fudd was selected with the first pick by the Dallas Wings where she will rejoin her former college backcourt mate, and close friend, Paige Bueckers.

The Minnesota Lynx selected TCU guard Olivia Miles. Miles is one of the few basketball players who wear their glasses on the court. “It is part of my brand!” she told the media. She then thanked her agent for getting her an optical endorsement deal.
The NBA announced the Knicks led the league in merchandise sales this past season. Steph Curry sold more jerseys than any other player. LeBron James dropped to fifth place this year.

Prime Video’s latest sports documentary,“Jerry West:The Logo” is technically a terrific look at the man whose silhouette became the artwork symbol for the NBA, but it is a difficult view because of the subject.
The late Jerry West was one of the greatest scorers in NBA history, and was revered by his contemporaries, and those who came after him like Michael Jordan. West’s exploits on the hardwood masked the fact he suffered from depression, grew up in a dysfunctional home, and was scarred by the fact his talented team, the Los Angeles Lakers, always lost in the NBA Finals, to one of the greatest dynasties in sports history, the Boston Celtics.
To his credit, West agreed to sit down with the producers for a series of interviews where nothing was off limits. Interestingly, he found more satisfaction being an NBA general manager than he did either as a player or as a coach. At the end of “The Logo,” you wish that a man who achieved so much success could have found just a bit more joy in his life.

WOMEN WHO ROCK
CASSANDRA COLEMAN “DYING STAR”

An emerging singer/songwriter that has already been hailed for her “immense talent” (Paste) and “an artist who refuses to be defined by any one thing” (Rolling Stone), Cassandra Coleman releleased her brand new single “Dying Star.” Available everywhere through Warner Records,“Dying Star” finds Coleman with eyes on the horizon as she envisions a prescient visit with her future self. The lush, sweeping instrumentation soars beneath her ethereal vocals anchored by wisdom-seeking lyrics that grapple with fate, longing, and the search for meaning. Dying Star” arrives after a series of new singles that have quickly established Coleman as one of indie-pop’s most compelling new voices. Her debut single “Coming of Age” was produced by Jack Antonoff and recorded with all the members of Bleachers at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York City.
MAISIE PETERS AND JULIA MICHAELS UNITE ON ‘KINGMAKER’
With just a handful of dates left on her sold-out global ‘Before The Bloom’ theatre tour, Maisie Peters has shared a new song, ‘Kingmaker’, featuring sixtime Grammy nominee Julia Michaels. Alongside ‘If You Let Me’ with Marcus Mumford, ‘Kingmaker’ is one of two features on Maisie’s anticipated third studio album, Florescence, due out 15 May. Co-produced with two-

time Grammy winner Ian Fitchuk, the record is a meditation on how the right love can help heal the wrong ones. It’s an album about perspective, selfrealization, healing.

END EVE “EMPTY PROMISES” VIDEO
END EVE is a Miami-born artist of Colombian and Italian heritage, raised between Miami and Colombia. She started performing at a young age through musical theatre and ballet, influenced by her grandmother, who often played opera and classical music at home. Music was always a constant in her life and became something she naturally gravitated toward. She shared the video for her dreamily gothic and darkwave-like new single “EMPTY PROMISES.”
END EVE grew up listening to heavier bands like Korn, Marilyn Manson, and Linkin Park, while also loving pop artists like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. That mix of influences helped shape her sound and the kind of artist she wanted to become. She later worked in Mexico City as a musical theatre actress before moving to Los Angeles to study music and begin her solo project, END EVE.
END EVE is newly signed to Roux & Ruin Records.

TOBY KEITH’S 35 BIGGEST HITS

As accolades continue to roll in for the late Toby Keith, UMe will release the late singer, songwriter and entertainer’s 35 Biggest Hits on vinyl for the first time on May 22. Originally issued as a two-CD set in 2008, the unprecedented three-LP version is available for pre-order here: tobykeith.lnk. to/35BiggestHits3LP
Arriving in time for Memorial Day,35 Biggest Hits kicks off the hottest part of the year for Keith’s music. Last July alone, he reached an audience of more than two billion, with Billboard calling him the Independence Day holiday’s “biggest winner.” That success followed the 2024 streaming surge that pushed 35 Biggest Hits to No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard Top 200.
The RIAA platinum certified collection has spent a total of 276 weeks on the Top 200, including five weeks in the Top 10. Featured tracks include the recently certified 5x-platinum “Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American),” which peaked at No. 25 on the all-genre Hot 100, and “Who’s Your Daddy?” which peaked at No. 22. Both were multi-week No. 1s on the major country airplay charts.
The collection opens with his debut smash “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” (1993) and runs through the 2006 chart-topper “A Little Too Late.” Also among the 34 signature hits are “How Do You Like Me Now?!,” “I Love This Bar” and “As Good As I Once Was,” punctuated by the addition of then-new release “She’s A Hottie.”
LILY MEOLA NEW SINGLE
Maui-born, emerging country force Lily Meola released her new single “You and I.” The track is the latest peek at her anticipated debut album Lucky to Be, which is due out this summer through Nettwerk Music Group. Over a bed of vintagetwanged guitar and sweeping pedal steel, Meola sings “I got lucky enough to find, you and I” as she reflects on the serendipitous nature of love and the simple odds of existence - a common theme that can be heard throughout the album.

On Lucky to Be, Meola celebrates all the universal dots that had to be connected to make her the person that she is: a Hawaii native, a beloved daughter, a protégé of Willie Nelson, a mentee of Jackson Browne and Grammy-winning producer Bob Rock, and a stunning rising vocalist praised by the likes of Whiskey Riff as “one of the most promising names in country music.” The odds of encountering someone like Meola are themselves fantastical. She is a true bohemian artist, a woman shaped by the verdant, ancient nature in which she was raised on Maui and the eclectic people, from her free-spirited mom to a country music legend, who surrounded her. She is both a hippie and a fashion plate; she has a pet deer named “Doenut.” All of those facets inform Lucky to Be, an album of smart indiecountry with a discernible Western flair.

JO DEE MESSINA STUDIO ALBUM
Chart-topping country, 2x Grammy-nominated Jo Dee Messina has announced that Bridges, her first new album in over 10 years, is set to release on June 5. Known for her powerful vocals and extensive catalog—including nine No. 1 hits and 16 Top 40 singles—Messina has earned accolades and nominations from Billboard, the ACM Awards, CMA Awards, and AMAs.
While most albums reflect a season; Jo Dee Messina’s new album, Bridges, is 10 years’ worth of seasons rolled up into one.The love, the life, the pain, the fight, the learning — and the living through it all. The second single from the new album, “Don’t Let Them Hide Your Beautiful,” lands today and follows last month’s release of “Some Bridges.”
THEATER AWARDS SEASON – THE MUSICALS
by Jane Klain

Broadway’s big guns have all opened as the season barrels to awards’ time. Musical vampires are back on Broadway: the highly anticipated “The Lost Boys,” adapted from the 1987 cult film, blends supernatural horror, humor and teen angst in a coming-of-age story. Featuring music and lyrics by The Rescues and a book by David Hornsby and Chris Hoch, the musical tracks a divorced mother (“Hell’s Kitchen’s” Shoshana Bean) who relocates with her sons Max and Sam (LJ Benet and Ben Pajak) to a too-good-to-be-true California town where each boy finds his tribe – Max falls under the spell of a charismatic rocker (Ali Louis Bourzgui, “The Who’s Tommy”) and his bloodsucking crew – while Sam teams up with vampire-fighters. Two-time Tony winner Michael Arden directs, with aerial choreography by Lauren Yalango-Grant and Christopher Cree Grant. (Palace Theatre) lostboysmusical.com
The grandaddy of midnight cult movies, Richard O’Brien’s beloved campy, queer spoof of science fiction and horror movies “The Rocky Horror Show,” returns to its original home – the stage – in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s all-star revival directed by Tonywinner Sam Pinkleton (“Oh Mary!”). International heartthrob Luke Evans makes a dazzling Broadway debut singing powerfully and strutting transgressively as sinister, sexy Dr. Frank-N-Furter. The eclectic cast includes Juliette Lewis, Amber Gray, Michaela Jae Rodriguez. Andrew Durand and Stephanie Hsu play uptight Brad and Janet. Droll Rachel Dratch steals scenes as the quick-witted narrator. (Studio 54) roundabouttheatre.org
Also based on a campy spoof – season 1 of Apple TV’s affectionate send-up of Golden Age musicals – “Schmigadoon!” arrives on Broadway in a charming production filled with candy-colored sets, spectacular choreography and an absolutely terrific cast. Alex Brightman (“Beetlejuice”) and Sara Chase (“The Great Gatsby”) star as New York doctors stuck in a romantic rut until they cross a bridge that takes them into a technicolor Broadway musical world (with clever, loving parodies of 1940s and 50s musicals by composer-lyricist-writer Cinco Paul). Co-stars Ana Gasteyer, Brad Oscar, Isabelle McCalla, Ivan Hernandez and Ann Herada create a funfest for theater lovers. Christopher Gattelli directs and choreographs this giddy valentine. Another musical inspired by hit TV show, “Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Parody Musical,” invites the audience to relive all the moments from the show as it follows “starry-eyed golden boy Shane Hollander (Jimin Moon) on his journey from power center to power bottom.” Jay Armstrong plays Ilya Rozanov, and Ryann Redmond, Cherry Torres, and Ryan Duncan round out the cast under the direction of Alan Kliffer. Dylan Marcaurele wrote the book and the bop-infused score. Previews begin May 12. (The Club) heatedrivalryparody.com/

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MoFi), the leader in high-fidelity audio reissues, is proud to announce the audiophile release of two cornerstones of the progressive-rock canon from British supergroup Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP): the 1971 live masterpiece Pictures at an Exhibition and the 1972 studio gem Trilogy.

METAL

DOKKEN’S ERASE THE SLATE
Dokken, formed in Los Angeles in 1978, had several hit singles which charted on the Billboard Hot 100, such as “Alone Again”, “In My Dreams”, and “Burning Like a Flame”, and has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide. The classic Dokken line-up consisted of founder Don Dokken on vocals, George Lynch on lead guitar, Mick Brown on drums and Jeff Pilson on bass.
Released in 1999, Erase the Slate had marked a fresh chapter for Dokken, introducing Reb Beach (best known for Winger and later Whitesnake) as the band’s lead guitarist. Erase the Slate blends Dokken’s classic melodic metal roots with a more modern, late-’90s hard rock edge. Reb Beach brought a technically sharp yet fluid guitar style that differed from the flashier, more aggressive approach of former guitarist George Lynch. His playing added a polished, groove-oriented feel while still delivering strong solos and riffs.
Now it is available through Deko Entertainment for the first time in the United States on 180g vinyl. Completely remastered, repackaged, and limited to only 500 copies of each variation including a beautiful Green Smoke and classic Black. Erase the Slate includes stand out tracks “Erase The Slate”, “Change the World”, as well as a cover of the Harry Nilsson song “One” made popular by Three Dog Night. This is a must have for any Dokken fan!
