PAC TRACK ONE VISION OF QUEEN Long before his YouTube videos went viral, spawning an appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and a performance with the surviving members of Queen on “American Idol,” Marc Martel spent 13 years recording and touring the globe with Canadian rockers Downhere. Not only did the rock band visit 49 American States, but also toured throughout Europe and even Northern Africa, collecting worldwide acclaim and four Juno Awards in their native land. All the while, the group was extoled for its sonic diversity while the Nashville transplant was regularly heralded as a world-class vocalist, often earning comparisons to late great Freddie Mercury in tandem with building his own fervent fan base. While the idea of paying tribute to one of the world’s most renowned and influential rock institutions never actually occurred to him when pounding the pavement with his own internationally signed act, in hindsight, it only made sense that Martel would someday be the perfect vehicle to propel One Vision Of Queen onto the road. One Vision of Queen Starring Marc Martel on Saturday, March 14th at 8PM. Tickets are $56-$106 including fees and can be purchased in person at Patchogue Theatre 71 East Main Street in Patchogue, by phone at 631-207-1313,

THEATER: New Year – New Shows

by Jane Klain

Carrie Coon (“White Lotus,” “The Gilded Age”) and Namir Smallwood reprise their roles in the Broadway premiere of “Bug,” which they first performed in the acclaimed Steppenwolf Theatre production in 2020-21. Coon stars in her husband -- Pulitzer Prize and Tony winner -- Tracy Letts’ 1996 creepy psychological thriller as a cocktail waitress on the lam from her ex-husband. Smallwood plays a mysterious war veteran and drifter she holes up with in a seedy Oklahoma motel room where their relationship is transformed into an intense romance fueled by paranoia, delusion and conspiracy theories. Tonywinner David Cromer again directs the Steppenwolf’s cast which includes Randall Arney, Jennifer Engstrom and Steve Key. (Samuel J. Friedman Theatre) manhattantheatreclub.com The Elevator Repair Service which last year brought “Gatz,” its eight-hour reading of “The Great Gatsby,” to the Public Theater, returns with its creative retelling of James Joyce’s Mount Everest of 20th century literature “Ulysses” as part of the Under the Radar Series. In the New York premiere, seven performers begin a sober reading of the iconic novel but soon are guzzling pints, brawling and committing “debaucheries.” Ulysses It is directed by ERS artistic director John Collins and co-directed by dramaturg Scott Shepherd who describes the production’s dedicated irreverence as “an enormous, elaborate joke—meant in all seriousness.” (Public Theater) publictheater.org/productions/season/2526/ Ulysses Tony nominees Jasmine Amy Rogers (“Boop: The Musical”) and Justin Cooley (“Kimberly Akimbo”) along with other adult actors Leana Rae Conception, Autumn Best, Philippe Arroyo and Kevin McHale, play quirky, nerdy adolescents competing for a local spelling championship at a middle school in this heralded off-Broadway revival of the popular 2005 Tony-winning musical “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” Lilli Cooper (“Tootsie”), Jason Kravits and Matt Manuel portray the equally quirky adults running the contest. Four

adult audience members are selected at each show to participate in the spelling bee. With music and lyrics by Tony-winner William Finn (“Falsettos”), book by Tony-winner Rachel Sheinkin and new direction and choreography by Danny Mefford, the revival has received rave reviews: “a tender, joyous, bittersweet and very, very funny tribute to kids obsessed with words” (New York The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Times), and an extended run. (New Photo credit: Joan Marcus World Stages) spellingbeenyc.com Hamish Linklater and Miriam Silverman play a power couple who see their perfect life go off-script (taking friends and their daughter along for the ride) in the world premiere of writer-director Erica Schmidt’s new comedy “The Disappear.” The play -- which also stars Dylan Baker, Madeline Brewer, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Anna Mirodin (as the couple’s daughter) -- peels back the curtain on fame, ambition, marriage and reinvention. (Minetta Lane Theatre) audiblexminetta.com/shows/ the-disappear After his triumph as Oscar Levant in “Good Night, Oscar,” Tony and Emmy-winner Sean Hayes returns to the New York stage in the oneman psychological thriller “The Unknown,” written by David Cale and directed by Leigh Silverman. He stars as an author battling writer’s block who retreats to a remote cabin where he discovers he may not be alone – blurring the lines between his life and the thriller he is writing. REMEMBERING BRIGITTE BARDOT Brigitte Bardot once claimed, “A photograph can be an instant of life captured for eternity that will never cease looking back at you.” Lending her likeness to more than a few immortalized instances over the years, we could all learn a thing or two from the eternal French style icon and femme fatale blueprint about the fine art of looking good and living well. Raising a toast to the star’s resplendent life upon the occasion of the silver screen goddess and animal rights activist’s passing at the age of 91, Morrison Hotel Gallery takes an intimate look back through the immortalizing lenses of Douglas Kirkland, Terry O’Neill, Julian Wasser and John R. Hamilton with a web-exclusive tribute on view at morrisonhotelgallery.com.

SPORTS BEAT Mets fans felt a lump of coal in their stockings as the holiday season approached. Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns had made no secret of his desire to break up the longtime core of the team considering their disappointing 2025 season. While Mets fans can understand Stearns’ frustration, the Flushing faithful were livid that he was so eager to subtract that he got next to nothing in team additions. Trading outfielder Brandon Nimmo for 35-year-old second baseman Marcus Semien made little sense. Sending veteran infielder Jeff McNeil to the Athletics felt like another pennies-on-the dollar move. What really incensed Mets fans was watching the team’s all-time home run champion, Pete Alonso, who was a homegrown player, leave as a free agent for the Baltimore Orioles. To add insult to injury, Stearns ineptly negotiated with baseball’s best closer, Edwin Diaz. He made an offer to Diaz but told him the team had wiggle room to improve upon it. Diaz quickly met with the Dodgers who made him a better offer but told him to either take it immediately or it would be pulled off the table. Diaz quickly said, “I love LA!” You could not blame Mets fans if they were having PTSD Wilpon flashbacks. Pitcher Clay Holmes, who pitched well for the Mets as a starter after years of being a reliever for both the Pirates and the Yankees, played Santa Claus at the annual Mets holiday children’s party. He had the unenviable job of facing the New York media after Stearns had dismantled the

Clay Holmes

team for next to nothing in return. He proved to be an excellent politician by speaking highly of his former teammates while expressing faith in David Stearns’ blueprint. Jets fans are hoping their team, which has missed the playoffs for fifteen consecutive seasons, will be able to land the rights to Indiana Hoosiers QB, and Heisman Trophy winner, Fernando Mendoza. Finding a franchise quarterback has long been the Jets’ Holy Grail, and Mendoza, with his physique and intelligence, looks the part. At the Heisman ceremonies, he told me he was finishing his MBA degree at the Kelley School of Business at IU. He even enjoyed his accounting courses. “I love the equations of financial and managerial accounting. It is like solving a complex puzzle!” Vanderbilt Commodores QB Diego Pavia was the runner up to Fernando Mendoza in the Heisman balloting. Pavia showed a profound sense of humor bantering with Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson on Prime Video’s “Good Sports” show which airs new episodes on Tuesdays. Pavia could have a career as a standup comic if his NFL dreams do not pan out. “Good Sports” is a mixed bag. The show can land big name guests, and Kevin Hart is a knowledgeable sports fan. The problem is he, and his co-host,“SNL” stalwart Kenan Thompson, have no chemistry, and they are winging it. Thompson, who does not possess Hart’s knowledge of sports, seems understandably tired from constantly flying cross-country to

By Lloyd Carroll Prime Video’s Culver City, CA studios. Giants fans had little to enjoy watching HBO’s latest installment of “Hard Knocks” which was subtitled “In Season with the NFL East.” The only fun moment was hearing doomed interim Giants head coach Mike Kafka curse like a stevedore to try to motivate his dejected team.

FOX Sports NFL sideline reporter Pam Oliver, the late Greg Gumbel, recently retired ESPN College GameDay personality Lee Corso, and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones were among the inductees at the 2025 Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame ceremonies in December. Jerry Jones was instrumental in Fox Sports getting NFL broadcasting rights when it looked as if the network would not even survive back in 1993. He also gave Pepsi-Cola the right to be the official soft drink of the Dallas Cowboys when Coca-Cola had a stranglehold on the NFL. Today, Pepsi is the official soft drink of the NFL.

comedian Bill Maher likes to say on his Friday night HBO show, “Real Time,” “I can’t prove it, but I know it’s true.” According to the NBA, Luka Doncic gets more social media attention than any other player in the league, and that includes Steph and LeBron. Surprisingly, Knicks star Jalen Brunson did not crack the top ten.

Netflix is betting big on Jake Paul, a social media influencer of questionable boxing talent, being the future of the sport. In mid-December, Netflix broadcast a bout between Paul, and one of the best heavyweights of the 21st century, Anthony Joshua. Netflix executives must have been feeling relieved that fight lasted as long as it did. I must think Joshua carried Paul as long as he could. As

College hoops fans should be grateful ESPN and Turner Sports executives agreed to let two of the sports inimitable characters, Dick Vitale and Charles Barkley, work select games together. The end of 2025 marked the end of an era at WFAN as the station ended its sports update segments at 20-minute intervals. Longtime reporters Rich Ackerman and Erica Hershkowitz were let go. That was in addition to the cancellation of “BT & Sal” which starred Brandon Tierney and Sal Licata.

MOMMA’S WELCOME TO MY BLUE SKY

ERIK HUEY’S FORT DEFIANCE

Erik Huey’s forthcoming album, Fort Defiance is due February 13th, via Appalachian A.F. He will perform at Lucinda’s in Brooklyn on February 16th. Fort Defiance was produced by The Godfather of Americana” Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, (Joan Jett, Del-Lords, Steve Earle & The Dukes) and producer (Bottle Rockets, Jimbo Mathus, Yayhoos, Sarah Borges). It features guest vocal appearances by Tommy Stinson (The Replacements, Guns & Roses), Sarah Borges, and musical backing from Baltimore power pop phenoms Starbelly. The album was recorded in Greenpoint, Brooklyn at Ambel’s Cowboy Technical Services. It’s the follow up to 2023’s critically acclaimed solo debut Appalachian Gothic, which was hailed by Americana UK as “the Appalachian Tommy” and garnered a 4.5 out of 5 Star review by American Songwriter, who called the album a “mesmerizing, major work.” Erik (under the nom de plume Cletus McCoy) is the longtime frontman of The Surreal McCoys a cowpunk “hipster doofus band” (as Mojo Nixon dubbed them).

CIRCUS MIND CHANNELS VINTAGE SOUL

Genre-blending groove collective Circus Mind returns with “Whole Lotta Nuthin,” a feel-good, vintage-soul-infused single that radiates warmth, swagger, and timeless charm. Mixing a little Little Feat, a dash of WAR, and splashes of Dr. John and Santana, the track leans into a slinky, soulful rhythm that feels instantly familiar and refreshingly alive. At its heart, “Whole Lotta Nuthin” captures frontman and songwriter Mark Rechler’s quest for authenticity in a world increasingly saturated with cheap imitations, disposable trends, and AIgenerated replicas. True to his mission, Circus Mind doubles down on its organic, musician-driven sound. Dan Roth (drums), Steve Finkelstein (percussion), and Mathew Fox (bass) lock into a deep-pocket, superslanky groove; Rechler layers in lush organ, Rhodes, and space-synth textures; Brian Duggan delivers tight, funky guitar lines; and Michael Amendola fires off a brassy, high-energy horn solo.

Wrapping up a breakthrough year, Momma released Welcome to My Blue Sky (Deluxe Edition)– an expanded digital reissue of their criticallyacclaimed latest album–via Polyvinyl Record Company. The Brooklyn-based band of Etta Friedman (songwriter/vocalist/guitarist), Allegra Weingarten (songwriter/vocalist/guitarist), Aron Kobayashi Ritch (producer/bassist), and Preston Fulks (drums) unveil five new recordings that bring new life to their most successful LP yet: four album b-sides, as well as a cover of “Christian Brothers” by Elliott Smith/Heatmiser. Their introspective new single “Not Sacred” showcases their trademark hooks and riffs while offering a poignant reflection on family dynamics and growing older. “While Welcome to My Blue Sky is mainly written about romantic hardship, during that time period we also were starting to come to terms with our own relationship with alcohol. ‘Not Sacred’ is about us growing up and starting to see ourselves in our mothers, which allowed us to gain a sense of connection to them as adults.”

WOMEN WHO ROCK EMILY SCOTT ROBINSON “DIRTBAG SALOON”

MELISSA ALDANA RELEASES FILIN On Feb. 13, Melissa Aldana will release Filin, a stunning ballads album that presents a collection of songs drawn from Cuba’s filin music tradition performed by Photo by Travis Bailey a remarkable quartet featuring pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Kush Abadey, as well as special guest vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant. “I transcribe Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, and Don Byas, among many others. For them the sound itself is a tool to express an emotion,” she explains.“Every single note is a whole world. So there is a technical side to playing, but then there is this mystical side of sound.” The end product is, in a word, stunning. It’s also unlike anything else in Aldana’s catalog — or in 21st-century jazz on the whole.Throughout these eight tracks, the ensemble enacts a kind of stirring and emotional minimalism — a quiet intensity that places paramount importance on Aldana’s radiant delivery of the melody.

AUSTEN STARR “I AM THE ENEMY” Following the success of singles “I Am The Enemy” and “Remain Unseen,” rising rocker AUSTEN STARR announced the release of her debut album, ‘I Am The Enemy,’ due out on February 13th via Frontiers Music Srl. To celebrate the announcement, AUSTEN also shares the third single from the release, “Medusa,” alongside an official music video. AUSTEN STARR’s debut album, ‘I Am The Enemy,’ delivers a fierce mix of contemporary rock with classic hard rock influences. Written in collaboration with guitar legend Joel Hoekstra, the album also features Chris Collier on bass and drums, Steve Ferlazzo on keyboards, and Chloe Lowery on backing vocals. Drawing comparisons to The Warning and Halestorm, each track combines powerhouse performances with an electrifying, cinematic edge.

Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Emily Scott Robinson has released “Dirtbag Saloon,” the second track from her forthcoming album Appalachia, due January 30th via Oh Boy Records. “Dirtbag Saloon,” which Robinson calls “a honky tonk anti-gentrification anthem,” was inspired by her years in Telluride, Colorado, and the town’s transformation as longtime residents were priced out. “Dirtbag Saloon” follows the album announcement and release of the title track, “Appalachia,” inspired by stories of resilience following Hurricane Helene, the devastating 2024 storm that ravaged Western North Carolina. The song centers on a mother determined to endure in the wake of destruction. Produced by Josh Kaufman (I’m With Her, Grateful Dead, Anaïs Mitchell, Bonny Light Horseman) at Dreamland Recording Studios in upstate New York, this 10-song album finds Robinson at her most fearless and tender, singing of love, loss, grief, hope, and the strength of community amid devastation. She’s appearing April 4th at City Winery Loft in NYC.

TUBULAR FESTIVAL

Platinum-selling, sixtime GRAMMY-nominated blues-rock icon Kenny Wayne Shepherd has added a new run of West Coast performances to his Ledbetter Heights 30th Anniversary Tour, extending the celebration through late June. These additional dates follow the originally announced February - May run, which begins in Dallas and includes stops across the South, Northeast, Midwest, and Southeast. Special guests Jimmie Vaughan and Eric Johnson will appear on select shows. For more information to purchase tickets, visit KennyWayneShepherd. net/Tour. The tour marks the 30th anniversary of Ledbetter Heights, Shepherd’s breakout 1995 debut. Originally recorded when he was still a teenager, the album catapulted the Shreveport-born guitarist into the national spotlight, earning Platinum certification and helping to reintroduce blues to a new generation. For the first time ever, fans will hear all of the songs from the album performed live. He’s appearing Sunday, March 8th at The Paramount.

The Motels used saxophone and keyboards effectively as lead singer, Martha Davis, sang heartfelt rock ballads: “Only the Lonely,” “Suddenly Last Summer,” and “Strange Days.” The audience danced along with Men Without Hats’ “Pop Goes the World” and “Safety Dance.” The singer and audience took turns singing the refrain to “I Love the 80s.” Performing seven songs, the band had the longest set.

Tommy Tutone: Tommy Heath, and Christy Lichtenstein

Early 80s pioneers performed high-energy concerts at The Palladium Times Square on December 30, 2025. The Tubular Music Festival featured three rock bands: Tommy Tutone, Bow Wow Wow, and The Motels; followed by the synth pop/art rock of Thomas Dolby, Men Without Hats, and A Flock of Seagulls. Tommy Tutone began the evening with an electrified version of Cat Stevens’ “Wild World,” while ending his five-song set with his famous phone number, “867-5309/Jenny.” Annabella Lwin, lead singer for Bow Wow Wow, dressed in a short girlish miniskirt, danced nonstop to upbeat, sweet songs: “W.O.R.K. (N.O. Nah No! No! My Daddy Don’t),” “Do You Want to Hold Me,” and “I Want Candy.” Drumming tribal rhythms and clear, piercing guitar chords gave a Rockabilly and surf-style feel.

Mike Score of A Flock of Seagulls

“Suddenly Last Summer,” Martha Davis, lead singer, The Motels.

Thomas Dolby, on keyboards with only a drummer for backup, did the quirky, funny “She Blinded Me With Science,” Hyperactivity,” and “Europa and the Pirate Twins.”“One of Our Submarines” was Dolby’s meditative ode to his uncle, who died in one during World War II.

A Flock of Seagulls closed out the evening with their Uber-Romantic music: “The More You Live, The More You Love,” “Say You Love Me,” from 2021, “Some Dreams,” from 2024,“Space Age Love Song,” and “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You).” The last song for the evening, “I Ran,” had great backup vocals, making the song even stronger. The band uses to-the-point lyrics, blistering guitar, and majestic synthesizers. Larry the Duck of WLIR fame, and now a DJ on Sirius XM’s “First Wave,” was the Emcee. The turnaround from one band to the next took about 1520 minutes. The Palladium Times Square can hold 2,100 people, and the venue was near capacity.
