McCurdy -- an alcoholic drifter and inept train robber whose embalmed corpse became a sideshow attraction for decades – the musical features a country-rockjazz score by Tony-winner David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna. Snow falls on the audience, thunderous explosions shake the stage, light bulbs burst – these are just a few of the dazzling special effects in “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” the prequel to the cult Netflix sci-fi series. After winning Olivier awards for Best Entertainment and Set Design in London, the spectacle-driven play arrives on Broadway in a visually thrilling production. Co-directed by Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin and written by Kate Trefry and Jack Thorne in collaboration with the series’ creators the Duffer brothers, the play is set in Hawkins, Indiana, in 1959. It tells the origin story of “weirdo” adolescent Henry Creel (played with eerie intensity by Louis McCartney) and the emergence of his destructive telekinetic powers. (Marquis Theatre) https://broadway.strangerthingsonstage.com/ Jeremy Jordan moves from the glamour of “The Great Gatsby” to the harrowing tragedy of “Floyd Collins,” in which he plays (with great emotional depth) a Kentucky farmer and cave expert trapped underground for nearly two weeks in 1925. Based on a true story, writer-director Tina Landau and composer-lyricist Adam Guettel’s audacious, haunting musical makes its Broadway debut almost 30 years after its Off-Broadway premiere. Drawing from a minor, nearly forgotten event in American history, the creators contrast the media circus above ground with the inward journey of the man trapped below. Standouts include Jason Gotay, Marc Kudisch, Jessica Molaskey, Taylor Trensch and the ethereal-voiced Lizzy McAlpine. (Vivian Beaumont Theater) https://www.lct.org/shows/floyd-collins/ “Dead Outlaw,” another truth-is-stranger-than-fiction musical, earned several Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards during its off-Broadway run last year. Based on the bizarre true story of outlaw-turned-celebrity corpse Elmer

Based on Josefina López’s semiautobiographical play – which inspired the 2002 America Ferrara HBO film – “Real Women Have Curves,” explores a young woman’s coming of age, intergenerational conflict and the immigrant experience. Set in a Los Angeles garment factory in 1987, the musical follows 18-year-old Ana (Tatianna Cordoba) an American citizen navigating the pressures of her own ambitions, her mother’s expectations, and solidarity with the undocumented Latina women she works alongside. Directed and choreographed by Tony-winner Sergio Trujillo, the musical features a score by Grammy Award-winner Joy Huerta and Benjamin Velez, with a book by Lisa Loomer and Neil Benjamin. Broadway favorite Norm Lewis stars in a revival of Lonne Elder III’s rarely staged family drama “Ceremonies in Dark Old Men,” a finalist for the 1969 Pulitzer Prize. Lewis plays a ne’er-do-well widowed barber in 1950s Harlem, who leans on his three adult children – two sons entangled in bootlegging and numbers running, and his bitter daughter, the household’s sole breadwinner, whose ultimatum forces a tragic reckoning. Clinton Turner Davis directs this powerful exploration of broken aspirations and generational tension. (Theatre at St. Clements) https:// www.thepeccadillo.com/

JOE PIKET AT LIMEHOF

One of the best parts of following artists over the years, is watching the maturation process. Some artists remain stagnant, rehashing the same tried and true formula songs that made them successful.

Others use new albums and appearances as an opportunity to grow, and this is the case with Joe Piket, one of Long Island’s most prolific songwriters.

Having seen Joe more than a dozen times over the years, and owner of all of his albums, it is fascinating how far Joe has come.

Nowhere was this more obvious than a recent show at The Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame. Over the years, Joe has garnered many honors, especially for his musicianship. He’s won best keyboardist more times than you can count,

What Joe does have is a good mix of strong vocals, precision playing on keyboards, guitar and other instruments, and the ability to spin yarns and turn them into fascinating life experiences. He would have done well in the ‘60’s Folk scene.

I find a song that Joe performed, Coke Stevenson, a fascinating choice. It’s about a self made man who became Governor of Texas, but later lost in a contested senate election primary to a man named Lyndon

Baines Johnson. This is an unusual topic for a song, but Joe pulls it off with wit and satire.

Father Time has to be one of the crowd’s favorites. Backed by Joe’s playing, it spins the story of a family where the son asks, “ Daddy, will we be together forever?” This is a real thought piece, and it shows how far Joe has come from when he was writing about puppy love or lost love. Many have compared it to Harry Chapin’s Cat’s In The Cradle. Both songs leave you with a strong aftertaste. And much soul searching.

We Kiss With Our Eyes Open is a throwback to earlier days, when Joe was soul searching. He talks about how hard it is to trust another person, the equivalent of looking over one’s shoulder. He clearly has written It with a special person in mind.

Joe also did a strong instrumental version of The Long and Winding Road, where his skills shined.

Finally, he closed out with Get Together by The Youngbloods, a very poignant and appropriate song for our times.

If you haven’t seen Joe Piket live, do so immediately. Do it before he grows even older and wiser. And smile when you realize there are a lot of really good artists on Long Island doing original music. You just have to seek them out.

SPORTS BEAT

These are the best of times for women’s sports. The ratings for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, which was won last month by perennial powerhouse the University of Connecticut Huskies, had TV ratings rivaling that of the men’s tournament.

Amazon’s streaming service, Prime Video, has been ahead of the curve when it comes to the growing popularity of women’s sports. Last month, it launched a documentary series on the NWSL, which features Brazil’s Marta (who like her late compatriot, Pele, only needs one name for recognition), and up-and-comer Trinity Rodman who is the daughter of Dennis Rodman.

Prime Video, which is a WNBA rightsholder, has greenlit a three-part documentary on Diana Taurasi, a certain Hall of Famer, who played twenty years for the Phoenix Mercury. Syosset’s Sue Bird, who also played twenty years in the WNBA, and legendary Knicks star Carmelo Anthony, will be part of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2025.

Although I am sure NHL officials would have preferred Alex Ovechkin to set the all-time goal-scoring record against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, they must have been pleased it occurred on the first Sunday in April against the Islanders at the UBS Arena. The disappointing Islanders, who were on the fringes of getting into the playoffs at the time, surprisingly won the game by a score of 4-1.

It was a nice touch by both TNT and the MSG Network, to allow Sam Rosen, who is retiring as the Rangers play-by-play voice, to team up with his old booth partner, former Rangers goalie and executive John Davidson, for a national telecast between the Blueshirts and the Philadelphia Flyers at the Garden on April 9.

Although it will not be pleasant viewing for Yankees fans. Apple TV Plus’s three-part documentary on the 2024 World Series, “Fight for Glory,” is well-worth watching. Executive producers Ron Howard, Brian Glazer, and Derek Jeter, were able to get commentary from players, managers, and executives which were not widely heard during the recent Fall Classic between the Yankees and the Dodgers. They had cameras set up in the stands at both Dodger and Yankee Stadiums to capture emotions from the fans in each ballpark.

The Mets were able to get off to a decent start to the season thanks to solid starting and relief pitching. Their hitting, however, was terrible, except for the exploits of first baseman Pete Alonso who seemed much more comfortable in 2025 than he did in 2024 with all the hype about his free agency weighing on him. While the Mets’ longtime tormentors, the Atlanta Braves got off to a slow start,

INTERPLAY JAZZ ORCHESTRA PLAYS BLUE NOTE

The Interplay Jazz Orchestra will have the blues this month as they pay tribute to Blue Note Records at their May 29 appearance at The Jazz Loft. The band has a monthly residency at The Jazz Loft, 275 Christian Avenue in Stony Brook, on the last Thursday of the month.

The 17-member big band orchestra, co-directed by Joe Devassy (trombone) and Gary Henderson (trumpet), usually performs original compositions and arrangements written by band members, but on May 29 the band will be feelin’ blue as they focus on the music of Blue Note Records.

Blue Note Records is a well-respected jazz and blues record label that has blazed an innovative trail in music. The record label was founded in 1939 by Alfred Lion, who came to America after fleeing the oppressive Nazi regime in his native Germany.

Tickets for the Interplay Orchestra are $30 Adults, $25 Seniors, $20 Students, $15 Children Over 5. The show starts at 7 p.m.

The Jazz Loft is home to not one, but three big bands in residence that perform monthly. The Jazz Loft is located just 90 minutes from New York City and is the only music venue on Long Island that features exclusively Jazz music.

their down-the-turnpike NL East rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies, appeared to be on a mission after losing the National league Division Series to the Mets last October. The Phillies took two out of three games from the Dodgers. They have the strongest lineup and starting pitching staff in the NL East. The only question mark is their bullpen. Closer Jordan Romano has been giving fans at Citizens Bank Park ulcers with his shaky ninth innings.

Vice Media has an intriguing weekly series called “The Grudge,” in which athletic rivalries were more personal than they were professional. Last month “The Grudge” had a “Clemens vs. Piazza” episode. While it contained replays of Mike Piazza taking Roger Clemens deep, and sore loser Clemens retaliating by throwing beanballs and broken bat fragments at Piazza, we do not hear from either of the principals some 25 years later. Bobby Valentine, who was Piazza’s manager at the time, does offer commentary.

Brigham Young University quarterback Jake Retzlaff, who outplayed the University of Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders in last December’s Alamo Bowl, has one of the more unusual NIL (name, image, and likeness) deals in college sports. Retzlaff, who is Jewish, and jokes about the Mormon University now being referred to as “BY Jew,” had his image plastered on Manischewitz Passover boxes of matzo. Suddenly, getting your picture on a box of Wheaties now seems quite plebeian for an athlete.

One could not blame President Trump for running down to Miami last month after the stock market tanked for two straight days thanks to his tariffs obsession.Trump, who is a good golfer, was invited to take part

in the LIV Golf Tour’s stop in south Florida. While it has not overtaken the PGA Tour in terms of prestige and television deals (the LIV did move from the CW to FOX this year), it does feature some of professional golf’s biggest names such as Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, and Patrick Reed. Trump’s visit there, whether you like him or not, gave the LIV Tour major publicity. The LIV Tour repays the favor by making a stop at Trump’s golf course in Bedminster, NJ during the summer.

Warner Brothers Discovery’s Max streaming service will be launching a reality series about the Paul siblings: boxer Jake and wrestler Logan, called “Paul American.” The Paul brothers have a social media following which rivals that of the Kardashians.

MADDIE RICCARDO UNVEILS “BARSTOOL”

Ascendant Nashville-based singer/songwriter Maddie Riccardo kicked off 2025 with the release of her evocative single,“Barstool” A bittersweet country anthem steeped in melancholic twang and laced with radio-ready hooks, the track captures the ache of dating in a town where the whiskey flows easier than commitment. Penned by Riccardo, the lyrics are raw and reflective, spotlighting the Peter Pan-syndrome men that haunt Nashville’s “small town, big city” dating scene. “It ain’t been easy here in Tennessee,” she sings.“Can’t find a good man who can love me / The whiskey’s more neat than the guys I see / Won’t marry or they already have a ring.”

The single was produced by Simon Jay, whose recent work includes collaborations with Trannie Anderson (Lainey Wilson) and Ryan Michaels (Mat & Savanna Shaw), with upcoming projects alongside Ross Copperman and Tom Douglas. Drums were tracked by Chad Cromwell, known for his work with artists like Neil Young, Reba, and Miranda Lambert. Vocal production was led by John Palmieri (Tyler Braden,Cole Swindell), and the track was mastered by Nathan Dantzler (Sabrina Carpenter,Thomas Rhett,Niall Horan) with assistance from Harrison Tate (Kelsea Ballerini,Megan Moroney).

BITS & PIECES

VAN MORRISON NEW SINGLE ‘CUTTING CORNERS’

After announcing the June 13th release of his new album ‘Remembering Now’ alongside the official release of ‘Down To Joy’, Van Morrison released the follow-up single ‘Cutting Corners’.

‘Cutting Corners’ and ‘Down To Joy’ preview ‘Remembering Now’, which will be Van Morrison’s first collection of original music since 2022 and follows the acclaimed covers albums ‘Moving On Skiffle’ and ‘Accentuate The Positive’. The record sees him return to the transcendent, uncategorisable rhapsodies that make him unique. Soul, jazz, blues, folk, country - this is music in conversation with all of them but limited by none.

Its rich with hallmarks of classic Van Morrison, from dominant themes of love in spirit with the great ‘Someone Like You’ (the escapist romance of ‘Once In A Lifetime Feelings’, the self-deprecating candour of ‘The Only Love I Ever Need Is Yours’) to specific references to locations from his youth in the title track and ‘Stomping Ground’.

He is surrounded, as always, by a fabulous band - Richard Dunn (Hammond organ), Stuart McIlroy (piano), Pete Hurley (bass) and Colin Griffin (drums and percussion) - who have worked with him since ‘Three Chords and the Truth’ in 2019.

SAM SMITH RELEASES BBC PROMS PERFORMANCE

Multi-platinum, GRAMMY®, BRIT, Golden Globe and Oscar winning artist and songwriter Sam Smith released a very special recording of their acclaimed BBC Proms performance from London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall on 2xLP vinyl on April 12th.

For their only UK live performance of 2024, Sam was surrounded by full orchestral support as they took to the historic London stage to mark the 10year anniversary of the release of their debut album, In The Lonely Hour. In an undeniable, powerful and gripping concert, Sam showcased some of their biggest and greatest global hits, joined by special guests to sing a selection of jazz and soul classics that shaped the early years of their musical journeyincluding a glorious cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” and hauntingly nostalgic version of “Over The Rainbow.”

The term “pink elephant” refers to that paradoxical effect where the effort to suppress a thought leads to it being impossible to avoid— as exemplified in the song “Pink Elephant” by the impassioned futility of the repeated refrain of “Take your mind off me.”

Composed over two discs, the 17-track- vinyl is available on physical format and streaming platforms later this year. Accompanied on stage by their longterm touring band, the record features a myriad of live versions from the British singer’s wide discography of unforgettable penmanship, including the atmospheric “Too Good At Goodbyes’, soulfully resonant “I’m Not The Only One” and the GRAMMY® award-winning “Unholy.”
