SPORTS BEAT

After a colder winter than what we have become accustomed to, it is great to have baseball back. After last year when both the Mets and Yankees went deep into the postseason, expectations are understandably high again.

Talent is the key factor for predicting success in anything, especially sports, but health is right up there. The old sports cliche of “the best ability is availability” cannot be debated. Unfortunately, the Mets and the Yankees were hit with the injury bug in March.

Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton has tendinitis in both elbows, and the timing of his return is unknown. Yes, Stanton has proven to be a fixture on the injured list, but when he is healthy can carry the Bronx Bombers. Compounding matters is American League Rookie of the Year pitcher Luis Gil suffered a strained lat and my not be back until after the All-Star Game break.

The Mets have their share of medical woes. Brandon Nimmo is battling plantar fasciitis while his fellow outfielder, Starling Marte, has sore knees. At age 35, Marte’s best days are in the rear-view mirror. Pitcher Frankie Montas, who was signed as a free agent during the off-season to replace Luis Severino by Mets president of baseball operations, David Stearns, also is suffering from

a strained lat like Luis Gil. Sean Manaea, who proved to be the ace of the Mets staff last year, has a strained oblique, but he is expected to return to the mound next month.

Art Shamsky, who was a member of the 1969 Miracle Mets, has a new book out titled “Mets Stories I Only Tell My Friends” (Triumph Books). While Shamsky does reminisce about the best year of his life, most of the book is about his post-playing life which was varied to say the least. He was a correspondent for Channel 5’s “Sports Extra,” when Bill Mazer was its anchor; was an original radio host on WFAN; was a restaurateur with former Yankee infielder Phil Linz; and helped introduce baseball to Israel. Art’s biggest regret was retiring from baseball at age 30 in 1972 because of some nagging injuries.

The 2025 Toy Fair, held last month at Javits Center, had a sports component. Tangle Creations introduced its Nightball Pickleball set. Its glowing racquets and ball allow players to stay on the court after sundown even if there are no lights. Franklin Sports also had pickleball gear, as well as additions to its Nerf line of products which allow kids to work on eye-hand coordination while minimizing injury risk. Franklin Sports is best-known for their batting gloves. One of their

Springtime boasts an embarrassment of musical theater riches. with two highly anticipated jukebox musicals topping the list. Tony-winning Broadway legends Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga headline “Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends,” a delicious feast of expertly performed Sondheim songs. Devised by Cameron Mackintosh, with direction and musical staging by Matthew Bourne, choreography by Stephen Mear and Julia McKenzie as artistic consultant, the revue was originally presented as a gala celebration honoring Sondheim after his death, then televised by the BBC, and subsequently reworked as a London stage hit in 2023. Now it has traveled from Los Angeles to Broadway with standouts from the London cast Bonnie Langford, Joanna Riding and Jeremy Secomb joined by American favorites Beth Leavel and Gavin Lee. The songs are brilliantly staged and Lea Salonga makes a surprisingly perfect Mrs. Lovett to Secomb’s chilling Sweeney Todd. (Samuel J. Friedman Theatre).

Tony-winner Jonathan Groff (“Merrily We Roll Along”) stars as consummate entertainer Bobby Darin in “Just in Time,” a jukebox musical featuring classic Darin hits such as “Beyond the Sea,” “Mack the Knife” and “Dream Lover.” Extensively reworked since Groff first starred as the performer at the 92nd Street Y in 2018, the new musical was developed and directed by Alex Timbers, with a book by Warren Leight and Isaac Oliver. The biomusical traces Darin’s life from teen idol, actor, to political aspirant, culminating in his tragic death at 37. Scenic designer Derek McLane has transformed the theater into an intimate, swinging nightclub, complete with a live band. series chronicling the creation of a fictional Marilyn Monroe musical called “Bombshell,” “Smash,” with a score by “Hairspray’s” Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and a book by Rick Elice and Bob Martin, is a love-letter to Broadway which captures the behind-the scenes pandemonium of putting on a musical. Fivetime Tony-winner Susan Stroman directs the large cast that stars Robyn Hurder, Brooks Ashmanskas, Krysta Rodgriguez, John Behlmann and Kristine Nielsen. (Imperial Theatre) smashbroadway.com

Newcomer Jasmine Amy Rogers makes an auspicious Broadway debut portraying the classic Max Fleischer cartoon character Betty Boop in “Boop!: The Musical.” Featuring music by Grammy-winner David Foster, lyrics by Susan Birkenhead and a book by Bob Martin, “Boop!” imagines the cartoon star taking a day off from her celebrity life in her black-andwhite world and finding adventure, music, color and love in New York City. Tony winner Jerry Mitchell directs and choreographs the cast which includes Faith Prince and Stephen DeRosa. key endorsers is Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor who participates in the glove designing process. He has been with Franklin ever since signing his first baseball contract at age sixteen.

It is the end of the line for a pair of TV sports institutions. ESPN last month announced it will end the run of its daily 5PM sportswriter banter show, “Around the Horn,” after 23 years. Also calling it quits is “FOX NFL Sunday” personality Jimmy Johnson who has been with the network since it won the rights to televise the NFL 31 years ago. Johnson, a former head coach of both the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins, was able to combine warm folksy humor to go along with his knowledge of the Xs and Os.

Vice, the quirky cable television network, which was teetering on bankruptcy a few years ago, has regained its footing and is using sports documentary series as a way of standing out from the pack. Last month they debuted “Rick Pitino” Red Storm Rising” about the legendary basketball coach’s successful return to New York and restoring the St. John’s University men’s basketball team to prominence.

Vice’s latest sports doc anthology is called “The Grudge.” It looks at bitter rivalries between both opponents and even teammates, such as that of Shaquille O’Neal and the late Kobe Bryant when they were the heart of the Los Angeles Lakers. The episode which should generate the most buzz locally is a look-back at the enmity between Mike Piazza and Roger Clemens. While neither player spoke to Vice, former Mets manager Bobby Valentine is not shy about giving his viewpoint. Former NFL linebacker Will Compton serves as the narrator of “The Grudge.”

The public’s thirst for sports has made auto racing a hot property. Fox Sports is the new home for the Indy Racing League, while Prime Video will be launching a documentary series title “First to the Finish,” about the Mazda MX-5 Cup Championship which is the circuit for aspiring race car drivers.

Stories of boxing’s decline have been staples of sports columns for years, but that is not reality. Last month’s lightweight championship fight between Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Lamont Roach attracted a record 19.350 spectators to Barclays Center and was the second-highest grossing event in the arena’s history. It also generated good pay-per-view business for Prime Video. Streaming services have filled the vacuum created by the departure of HBO and Showtime from the fight game.

It was sad news to learn of the passing of Oceanside native and Adelphi University native Al Trautwig at the age of 68 from cancer. Trautwig was synonymous with the MSG Network for 30 years. He was also a fixture on Olympics telecasts and at the US Open.

ZEBRA 50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR

Some career achievements in rock music are so impressive but find themselves overlooked because they are not to be believed. For legendary rockers Zebra, they hold one of those distinctions that the average listener might not be aware of. Zebra is the longestrunning American band still touring with all its original members.

Comprised of Randy Jackson, Felix Hanemann, Guy Gelso and formed in New Orleans in 1975, these original band members have performed together every year for the last 50 years. 2025 will continue that trend as the band is heading out on their Zebra 502025 Anniversary Tour.

New dates have been added to the band’s previously announced performances in celebration of 50 years of performing together live. More dates will be announced in

the future. Information on all shows including ticket links and access to VIP experiences can be found on the band’s official website at: https://zebraband.com.

To commemorate their 50th Anniversary, Zebra has been in the studio working on the follow up to 2003’s Zebra IV – the last album the band released. The guys have reunited with legendary producer Jack Douglas (Aerosmith, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, and the New York Dolls) who also produced the band’s first two – and most successful – albums. The band plans to announce the first single this Spring and more information on the band’s upcoming release will be available in the future. They’re appearing May 17th at Westbury Music Fair.

BROKEN ARROW AT BOULTON CENTER

Broken Arrow was formed in 1976 by childhood friends - brothers Hank and Joey Perez, Mark Phillips and Al Canonico. Soon after, another lifelong friend, Stephen Murphy would join the group rounding out the lineup. Throughout the late 70’s and early 80’s the group became a fixture on the NYC/LI music scene known for their edgy, original songs and live performances. They were regulars at The Right Track Inn.

In 1985, the band was joined on drums by Vincent Perez, the youngest of the 3 brothers. The re-energized four piece band, armed with new management (which included Tom Cimillo and industry legend Bill Aucoin) signed a publishing deal with EMI followed by a recording deal in 1990. Unfortunately, a restructuring of EMI and subsequent merger with Chrysalis and SBK records left the band label-less, just short of the release of their debut album. Undaunted, Broken Arrow continued to write and perform throughout the remainder of the 1990’s.

Sadly in 2002, the tragic death of lead vocalist, Hank Perez, all but signaled the demise of the band. However, with encouragement from its loyal fan-base, via the phenomenon of social websites, the band has seen a rebirth. Joey, Mark, Stephen and Vincent, along with Scott Duryea, carry on Broken Arrow’s 30+ year legacy of recording.

They’ll be appearing May 17th at Boulton Center in Bayshore. Also featured on the bill is Long Island band Red Words.

SLAUGHTER’S 1997 RELEASE REVOLUTION

Slaughter was formed in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1988. The group was founded by lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Mark Slaughter and bassist Dana Strum, who previously played together in the band Vinnie Vincent Invasion. The addition of guitarist Tim Kelly and drummer Blas Elias allowed Slaughter to quickly gain attention for their lively performances, catchy hooks, and melodic guitar solos. Slaughter’s debut album Stick It to Ya had three singles released that hit the Billboard Hot 100: the hit “Fly to the Angels” (US#19), and the moderate hits “Up All Night” (US#27) and “Spend My Life” (US#39).

Slaughter has continued to release new albums and tour constantly, and now Deko Entertainment is re-issuing for the first time on vinyl their 1997 release Revolution, a retro/psychedelic vibe permeates this album, as clearly evident on such highlights as “American Pie” and the long and winding epic “Heaven it Cries.”

There is a limited amount (100 copies) of a CD/LP Bundle with at 10x10 print signed by original cover artist Ioannis which includes the Blue vinyl and 6-Panel CD Digipak. Revolution will drop on May 30th.

GWEN STEFANI RELEASES BOUQUET DELUXE

Gwen Stefani shared the deluxe edition of her celebrated fifth studio album: Bouquet Deluxe. Available now via Interscope Records, the expanded release features new song “Still Gonna Love You,” cowritten by FINNEAS, as well as acoustic renditions of every track.

“Still Gonna Love You” is an emotionally bare addition to the Bouquet track list, featuring slowly growing instrumentation and a message of resilience: “You can push me away, go ahead and make your mistakes, I won’t judge you / Nothin’ that you can say if you want me to hate you, I’m still gonna love you.”

Stefani recorded Bouquet backed by a full live band. The idea of life’s seasons, and seeds of hope that you plant, runs throughout Bouquet, serving up endlessly quotable lyrics that are full of clever turns. “Bouquet represents a blend of everything that I’ve ever been and who I’ve evolved into. Each one of the songs was picked like individual flowers to create a bouquet of the past, the present, and the seeds of hope for the future,” said Stefani.
