GOODSPEED’S MISSION STATEMENT

Goodspeed Musicals’ mission is to share the joy of musical theatre; to delight, inspire, and challenge audiences; to nurture creators; and to build and support a broad, diverse, and inclusive community.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The land on which Goodspeed Musicals is located in East Haddam and Chester, CT is the ancestral land of at least three tribes of Native Americans—the Wangunk, the Mohegan and the Nehantic tribes. We understand that the land which is now Haddam and East Haddam, was purchased from the native people in 1662 for thirty coats—worth about $100. We acknowledge those native Americans and the loss of their homeland—land on which we thrive today.

14 GOODSPEED MUSICALS | 2023 SEASON

WRITERS’ NOTES BY ROBERT SCHENKKAN & NEIL BERG

A group of fugitives huddles terrified in a room in an abandoned building. Outside, the searching police grow nearer. Inside, there is fear, anger, and despair. We could be in NYC today, or Jerusalem two thousand years ago. One of the group begins to tell a story, an amazing story, a story of miracles and betrayals and hope. The 12.

Neil and I met years ago, introduced by mutual friends. I love musical theater and had been eager to work in that arena. Neil had an interesting idea. Musicals have a famously difficult birth, but from that day to our residency at Goodspeed, it has been a much longer journey than either of us imagined! What was originally a rock song cycle in concert is now a full book musical with a much more natural and nuanced approach to the story.

An early version had a very successful production at the Denver Theater Center where it won the Henry Award for Best Musical, but we were still unsatisfied. And so, we turned to John Doyle, the multiple Tony Award-winning Director, to join us. Early in his life, John was considering the priesthood; then he discovered the Theater. As someone intimately familiar with miracles, religious and secular, there could hardly be a better match of director and material. So, where we were once two, now we were three. Despite Covid, a challenging but very satisfying development process ensued in which the central conceit was again revised, and half a dozen new songs written, followed by two workshops in NYC. And now, at last, here we are at Goodspeed!

The 12 takes a small, rarely dramatized part of the Passion story. The main characters are now off-stage―Jesus and Judas are dead― and in the terror and chaos that followed, the remaining followers have fled to the Upper Room. These were blue collar men

and women and what little they had, each had given it all up to follow this movement. Only days before, they arrived in Jerusalem as heroes! And now, their leader is dead, betrayed by one of their own, and they all expect to die next. Two days later they will leave the room and go out prepared to preach and die for a revolutionary idea. What happened in the room?

It’s hard not to look at this event with the weight of 2,000 years of bitterly contested theology. We are trying to strip all of that away and focus on the human story. Imagine if you were one of these ordinary people and this charismatic individual came to you and said, “Follow me.”

And for reasons that are still not clear, you put down what you’re doing, and you follow. Even now, it is almost unfathomable.

Oftentimes when modern dramatists have dealt with issues of faith, it’s hard not to feel some condescension. Here, we have tried very seriously to get at this fundamental question of Belief, and a commitment to something which cannot be proved in rational, scientific terms. To us, that is an incredibly exciting, dramatic proposition. How do we get there? And when that dies, when that belief falters or is betrayed, how do we go on? We have all experienced a dark night of the soul. That terrible moment where our foundational belief, whether it is a religion, a marriage, a political party, etc. fails us. In that moment, how do we find a way to go forward? That’s the heart of our exploration. And it’s why we hope that our audience―members of all faith-based communities and nonbelievers alike―will find this story not only accessible and respectful, but also profoundly moving.

15 GOODSPEED MUSICALS | 2023 SEASON
Robert Schenkkan (Book & Lyrics) & Neil Berg (Music & Lyrics)

For some unknown reason, I’ve been fortunate enough to explore the story at the centre of this musical many times during my career. The York Passion Plays in 1996, the same plays in Coventry Cathedral in 1998, a 1,000-strong cast in London as part of the Millennium celebrations. I’ve explored the stories in a UK prison, in a church in Oregon, in a theatre in Liverpool and at the Royal Albert Hall in London. All very different experiences and all a privilege.

So when renowned playwright Robert Schenkkan approached me about working with him and his composer Neil Berg on The 12, I looked back on all those previous experiences and wondered if I was ready for a new exploration. And a new exploration is certainly what it is. What excites me is that this story, told daily in churches throughout the world, is somehow different. Fresh. A new angle.

Between the moment when Robert invited me and the reality of a production, much happened. Our world was rocked by a cataclysmic event that touched us all. A pandemic. Plenty of time to contemplate. As I’m sure happened for many of us, that difficult time gave me the gift of considering how I wanted, if fortunate, to use the creative time left to me. It focused me on only telling stories that mattered to me. Stories that remind us of what we are here to do.

I come from the highlands of Scotland. When I was growing up, you went to church whether you wanted to or not. I heard those great stories every Sunday. They became a focus for why I went into the theatre. The relationship between religion and theatre has always interested me. The rituals and explorations have always felt closely linked. As I’ve grown older and life has offered unexpected opportunities, I’ve seen that ritual and storytelling are at the root of all explorations.

At one part of my life I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time living in a small town just outside Rome, Italy. There, church

and community are entwined. Indeed, one of the characters in our musical founded a big old church there! The art that is so readily available in Rome has most certainly influenced my work. Visual art always does influence me, as I hope you will see in our production. What has been wonderful is working with trusted collaborators like Ann Hould-Ward our costume designer to create a visual world that is contemporary but reflects the artists of long ago.

One is always happy when any artistic director of a theatre offers an opportunity to work in their space. Donna Lynn leads a beautiful and welcoming space. However, it’s a risk to invite artists that you haven’t worked with before into your home. I know―I’ve led five theatre organizations during a long working life. Making change is hard. Challenging audiences and artists is hard. However, it’s important to remember that without the “new,” there is no future for our art form. The musical is a powerful form. Music has been used to communicate important stories for as long as we have walked this earth. All the stories we love, all the musicals we listen to again and again, were once “new.”

The 12 aims to tell this perhaps familiar story “anew.” It’s told by contemporary people, now. It’s told for you. Not to evangelize. Not to put any one religion, faith or belief above another. Rather it asks us to see and hear afresh. I can’t legislate for that to happen. My job is to tell it in a way that honors the writers and makes theatrical sense to me. The core message of the story, surely central to all religions and philosophies, is as important now as it ever was. As I approach the winter of my life I think it ever more important. We have a responsibility to each other. To love one another. When I think back to the boy in the highlands of Scotland who sometimes had to be dragged kicking and screaming to those endless church services, I feel lucky that I did in fact hear words then that I’m still lucky enough to be exploring today.

Private Jones is inspired by the true story of a deaf soldier in World War I who displays remarkable skill as a sniper while hiding his profound hearing loss. Driven by an ensemble of deaf, hearing and hard-of-hearing actors and a dynamic Celtic score, witness how one man’s journey through war becomes all the more treacherous because he—and we—can’t hear what’s coming next.
