WHO’S WHO

DONNA LYNN HILTON (Artistic Director) [she/her] with Goodspeed since 1988 and in her 4th season as Artistic Director, is a highly-effective creative producer with a significant record of leading, developing and producing new musical theatre works as well as inspiring a re-envisioning of the canon. She led the creation of many of Goodspeed’s most successful productions of recent years, including last season’s Summer Stock, 2022’s 42nd Street and the 2014 world premiere of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn. She inspired the creation of Goodspeed’s critically-acclaimed production of Show Boat and brought to The Goodspeed the new musicals The 12, Anne of Green Gables, Because of Winn Dixie, and this season’s Maggie. At The Terris Theatre, she has led the early development of many new musicals, among them Private Jones and Passing Through. Donna Lynn led the creation of The Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Grove, the partnership with The Johnny Mercer Foundation which has welcomed over 400 musical theatre composers, lyricists and librettists to Goodspeed’s campus in winter for one of the premiere development opportunities available to emerging musical theatre writers. With the development of Hi, My Name Is Ben, she led Goodspeed’s first collaboration with a resident theatre outside the US—Scotland’s Dundee Rep Theatre—and recently helped re-envision The Writers Grove for Scottish, UK and Indian writers on the campus at Cove Park, in Scotland. Through Goodspeed’s Festival of New Musicals she hosted the first US development of the international hit Come From Away. Donna Lynn is a past-president of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre; serves as a Trustee for Dundee Rep Theatre/Scottish Dance Ensemble and, closer

to home, CT Landmarks. Donna Lynn began her career as a stage manager of Musical Theatre and Opera and remains a proud member of Actors Equity Association. She and her husband, Sound Designer Jay Hilton, make their home in Hadlyme with Cookie and Macy.

ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION, founded in 1913, represents more than 51,000 actors and stage managers in the US. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. Equity seeks to foster the art of live theater as an essential component of our society.

Sets, costumes, and props are designed especially for The Goodspeed and are built in Goodspeed Musicals’ shops.

Goodspeed Musicals is a professional theatre operating under an agreement between the League of Resident Theatres and Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States.

Orchestra members are represented by The Connecticut Valley Federation of Musicians, AFM Local 400.

Goodspeed Musicals is a member of The League of Resident Theatres.

The scenic, costume, lighting and sound designers in LORT Theatres are represented by United Scenic Artists, Local USA-829 of the IATSE.

Audio/video recording and photography are strictly prohibited during the performance. Please turn off your cell phone and any other device that might make noise during the performance. Photos may be taken before the show and during intermission, when no actor is present. TAG US ON SOCIAL MEDIA!

GOODSPEED’S MISSION STATEMENT

Goodspeed Musicals’ mission is to share the joy of musical theatre; to delight, inspire, and challenge audiences; to nurture creators; and to build and support a broad, diverse, and inclusive community.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The land on which Goodspeed Musicals is located in East Haddam and Chester, CT is the ancestral land of at least three tribes of Native Americans—the Wangunk, the Mohegan and the Nehantic tribes. We understand that the land which is now Haddam and East Haddam, was purchased from the native people in 1662 for thirty coats—worth about $100. We acknowledge those native Americans and the loss of their homeland—land on which we thrive today.

PROGRAM NOTES BY MICHAEL FLING | ARTISTIC ASSOCIATE

It seems hard to imagine now, but Rodgers & Hammerstein were two of the most bold and daring artists of their era. Historians cite Oklahoma! as the first book musical, meaning it used music and dance to forward the story and develop the characters. Carousel, their next sensation, is about a deeply flawed man and the woman who loves him despite his abusive behavior. With the third collaboration, Allegro, R&H attempted what we now call a concept musical, a style of show that wouldn’t take off until decades after when a new generation began to leave their mark on Broadway.

So when the two decided that their fourth musical would be based off of James A. Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Tales of the South Pacific, I think it’s fair to say that it was as pioneering a choice as their other projects. R&H were experts at creating art that spoke to the masses while also breaking new ground on Broadway. They felt passionately that musicalizing these stories from Michener’s time in the Pacific theater of World War II could change people’s hearts and minds in regard to racial prejudices, even before the Civil Rights Movement really took off in the 1950s.

From a structural standpoint, many critics point to South Pacific as their greatest achievement. Beyond the political message, Hammerstein set out to write a musical where there would be continuous action and no pausing for any kind of scene change. Allegro had begun this, but after South Pacific succeeded with it, it became virtually standard in all musicals. In addition, the team knew it was crucial that the musical be as realistic as possible. To ensure this authenticity in the show’s depiction of the military, they brought on Joshua Logan to cowrite the book and direct the production; the first time another collaborator was brought in to write with them.

While the politics of South Pacific are crystal clear and the reality of World War II looms, modern day theatergoers often forget how serious the show is. South Pacific is incredibly funny and the score possesses some of the most memorable R&H songs. Or as the children (and I on occasion) would say: bops on bops on bops. “Some Enchanted Evening,”

“There’s Nothing Like A Dame,” “Wonderful Guy,” “Bali Ha’i,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” “Cockeyed Optimist,” “Honey Bun,” “This Nearly Was Mine,” “Younger Than Springtime.” Most classic musicals are lucky if they have 4 hit songs. I just listed 9. And I left off a few of my favorites (who doesn’t love “Bloody Mary”?!).

This mastery extends to many small moments in the show as well. You’ll notice that Emile and Nellie hardly ever sing at the same time—this was because they wrote Emile for opera star Ezio Pinza, and Nellie for Mary Martin, Broadway’s sweetheart. Knowing that his voice would overpower hers, they intentionally prevented a duet, which is rare for the primary romantic couple in a musical. Even the opening of the show, the quaint song “Dites-Moi” which Emile’s children sing, translates to “tell me why life is beautiful, is it because you love me?”. It’s a poignant Easter egg which tells us what the show is about and the journey we’ll be on right from the start.

We are thrilled to finally be premiering this masterpiece on the stage of the Opera House after initially planning to open our season with it in 2020. South Pacific is a show that continues to resonate with contemporary audiences, and sadly carries a message that remains necessary: we must be carefully taught to hate. The brilliance of Rodgers & Hammerstein is their ability to layer this theme throughout the entire piece, while delivering an incredibly engaging and entertaining story with breathtaking melodies that capture our hearts—exactly why it belongs at Goodspeed Musicals.
