Next at The Goodspeed

JUNE 27 - AUG 17

The legendary songs of Elvis Presley ignite a rockin’ romp set in the Fabulous ’50s. When a guitar-playing stranger on a motorcycle roars into a sleepy town, nothing will be the same. Boy meets girl and soon everybody can’t help falling in love. Mistaken identity, mismatched lovers and the magic of romance come together in a free-wheeling rock and roll comedy. Celebrate the 20th anniversary production of a show that began at Goodspeed with non-stop classics, from “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Hound Dog,” to “Love Me Tender” and “Don’t Be Cruel.”

DONNA LYNN HILTON (Artistic Director) [she/her] with Goodspeed since 1988 and in her 5th season as Artistic Director, Donna Lynn is a highly-effective creative producer with a significant record of leading, developing and producing new musical theatre works as well as inspiring a re-envisioning of the canon. She led the creation of many of

Goodspeed’s most acclaimed productions including Summer Stock, The 12, Anne of Green Gables and last season’s Maggie. An advocate for creators and the creative process, she is committed to prioritizing new work development at Goodspeed. At The Terris Theatre, she has led the early development of many new musicals, among them Passing Through, Private Jones and last year’s A Complicated Woman. Donna Lynn led the creation of The Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Grove, the partnership with The Johnny Mercer Foundation which has welcomed over 400 musical theatre composers, lyricists and librettists to Goodspeed’s campus for one of the premiere development opportunities available to emerging musical theatre writers. She launched Goodspeed’s first formal commissioning program – GoodWorks – which brought to life Joriah Kwamé’s Little Miss Perfect and will welcome the world premiere of the new musical The Snow Goose to a Goodspeed stage soon. With the development of Hi, My Name Is Ben and No Love Songs, she led Goodspeed’s ongoing international collaboration with Scotland’s Dundee Rep Theatre and helped re-envision The Writers Grove for Scottish, UK and Indian writers on the campus at Cove Park, Scotland. Donna Lynn was invited to represent US musical theatre producers at the 2024 K-Musical Market in Seoul, South Korea. A past-president of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, she currently serves as a Trustee for Dundee Rep Theatre/Scottish Dance Ensemble and, closer to home, CT Landmarks. Donna Lynn is proud to have begun her career 40 years ago as a respected stage manager of Musical Theatre and Opera. She and her husband, Sound Designer Jay Hilton, make their home in Hadlyme with Cookie and Macy. “I am grateful to the entire Goodspeed team for their unending commitment to excellence.”

ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION, founded in 1913, represents more than 51,000 actors and stage managers in the US. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. PROGRAM NOTES BY MICHAEL FLING | ASSOCIATE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Broadway is no stranger to musicals of epic scale. From the dawn of the art form, spectacle has long been associated with the Great White Way. Back to the days of Florenz Ziegfeld, his Ziegfeld Follies, and his biggest smash-hit Show Boat, extravagant sets, costumes, and effects are assumed in the public imagination of what a musical should be.

So, it wasn’t much of a surprise when Garth Drabinsky (a successful and prolific Canadian producer) wanted to make a name for himself in New York, he chose to produce a celebrated, lavish revival of Show Boat in 1994. Sparing no expense, the production cost a cool $8.5 million dollars. Still, he wanted to create his own spectacle that would enter him into the annals of Broadway history. He set about to get the rights to E.L. Doctorow’s landmark novel, Ragtime—a pinnacle in the genre of historical fiction and frequently mentioned as one the greatest works of the English language. It isn’t hard to see what might have inspired him to option Doctorow’s masterpiece…the parallels between the source materials of Show Boat and Ragtime are numerous. Both are sweeping sagas which center on a family and examine the racial tensions at the heart of America that have continued to dominate the country. If Show Boat had broken ground seventy years earlier, surely Ragtime could, too.

For the creative team, he immediately approached the legendary Terrence McNally to pen the book. Already an accomplished playwright and bookwriter, McNally jumped at the prospect. Through a blind audition process, they, along with Doctorow, unanimously selected Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, fresh off the success of Once on this Island, to compose the score.

Ragtime opened on Broadway in 1998, and as is the way of most classics, wasn’t universally beloved. Many critics and audiences found that the sheer size of the production took away from the emotion and heart of the story. Still, the show earned a whopping 13 nominations at the Tonys,

competing against another visual feast (The Lion King) and a lauded production of a socially conscious classic (Cabaret). Despite the historic competition, Ragtime won 4 statues including Best Book and Best Score and managed to run for two years to near-full houses.

Due to the show’s association with spectacle, Ragtime has become a bit of a ‘white whale show’ for many theatres—including Goodspeed. We have explored doing it several times, but it never came to fruition. The timing just wasn’t meant to be. But now that we’re finally doing it, we understand why.

Led by the inspiring Christopher Betts, imaginative Sara Edwards, and the incredible Adam Souza, this production of Ragtime is the one we were meant to produce at this exact moment.

In the opening of the show, the turn of the century is described in a myriad of hyperbolic language. What stands out the most to me, and what I believe is most symbolic of the show, is “exploding.” The tumultuous mixture of so many different cultures lead to explosive results: literally, in the case of Father’s fireworks factory, Coalhouse’s threats in the Morgan Library, and Younger Brother’s proclivity for pyrotechnics—but also metaphorically, with Tateh bursting into his new life in America, and Mother discovering her own strength in Father’s absence.

This symbolism extends to the title. The genre of ragtime upended musical norms at the turn of the century with its use of syncopated rhythms—making the strong beats weak, and the weak beats strong. The societal upheaval the characters are experiencing mimics the soundscape that dominates the score and gives the show its name.

I know I speak on behalf of the company when I say that we are honored to be sharing this story at a time when the country feels similarly “explosive.” Even though Ragtime is a work of historical fiction, it illustrates profound truths that continue to resonate and reverberate today. In our jewel box of a Victorian opera house, those truths become the spectacle.

Goodspeed Musicals’ mission is to share the joy of musical theatre; to delight, inspire, and challenge audiences; to nurture creators; and to build and support a broad, diverse, and inclusive community.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The land on which Goodspeed Musicals is located in East Haddam and Chester, CT is the ancestral land of at least three tribes of Native Americans—the Wangunk, the Mohegan and the Nehantic tribes. We understand that the land which is now Haddam and East Haddam was purchased from the native people in 1662 for thirty coats—worth about $100. We acknowledge those native Americans and the loss of their homeland—land on which we thrive today.
