Mr. Price is the founder of the League of Historic American Theatres and a founding member of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. He serves on the Executive Committee of the American Theatre Wing and as a member the Tony Administration Committee. His board memberships include the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, the Johnny Mercer Foundation, the ASCAP Foundation, and numerous charitable and non-profit organizations. He received his BA from Michigan State University, MA from Minnesota, MFA from Yale, and holds honorary doctorates from Wesleyan University, Connecticut College, and The University of Hartford. He is married to Jo-Ann Nevas Price; they are the proud grandparents of Ezra and Ari.

DAVID B. BYRD (Managing Director) [he/him] was named Goodspeed Musicals’ first Managing Director in early 2021 and has held leadership positions at Connecticut’s Yale Repertory Theater, Westport Country Playhouse, and the Dwight/Edgewood Project in New Haven. With a career in the professional regional theatre spanning 20 years, he previously served as the Managing Director of Virginia Stage Company, Southeastern Virginia’s largest producing theatre. Prior to his work in Norfolk, David was Managing Director of the Clarence Brown Theatre (CBT) at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where he also served as Adjunct Professor in the UT-Knoxville Department of Theatre. David served on the McClung Museum Academic Programs Advisory Board and the Great Schools Partnership Advisory Council, in addition to grants panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, Tennessee Arts Commission, Virginia Commission for the Arts and the United Way. He is proud to currently collaborate with fellow business leaders on the Swing Bridge Taskforce, and will soon engage with the Middlesex County/RoverCOG Regional Economic Development Committee. David enjoys connecting with his alma mater by serving as a mentor in the Yale Cross Campus Mentorship Program. David has guest lectured at Greensboro College, UNC-Greensboro, Virginia Wesleyan University, Christopher Newport University, Skidmore College and Texas Tech, among others. He received an MFA degree in Theater Management from Yale University School of Drama and a BA degree in Drama from UNC-Greensboro in his native North Carolina. David and his husband Jeff reside in Portland, CT and enjoy hiking throughout the gorgeous CT woods when not taking in a live performance.

DONNA LYNN HILTON (Artistic Director) [she/her] with Goodspeed since 1988 and in her 4th season as Artistic Director, Donna Lynn is a highly-effective creative producer with a significant record of leading, developing and producing new musical theatre works as well as inspiring a re-envision-

ing of the canon. She led the creation of many of Goodspeed’s most successful productions of recent years, including last season’s Summer Stock, 2022’s 42nd Street and the 2014 world premiere of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn. She inspired the creation of Goodspeed’s critically-acclaimed production of Show Boat and brought to The Goodspeed the new musicals The 12, Anne of Green Gables, Because of Winn Dixie, and this season’s Maggie. At The Terris Theatre, she has led the early development of many new musicals, among them Private Jones and Passing Through. Donna Lynn led the creation of The Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Grove, the partnership with The Johnny Mercer Foundation which has welcomed over 400 musical theatre composers, lyricists and librettists to Goodspeed’s campus in winter for one of the premiere development opportunities available to emerging musical theatre writers. With the development of Hi, My Name Is Ben, she led Goodspeed’s first collaboration with a resident theatre outside the US—Scotland’s Dundee Rep Theatre—and recently helped re-envision The Writers Grove for Scottish, UK and Indian writers on the campus at Cove Park, in Scotland. Through Goodspeed’s Festival of New Musicals she hosted the first US development of the international hit Come From Away. Donna Lynn is a past-president of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre; serves as a Trustee for Dundee Rep Theatre/Scottish Dance Ensemble and, closer to home, CT Landmarks. Donna Lynn began her career as a stage manager of Musical Theatre and Opera and remains a proud member of Actors Equity Association. She and her husband, Sound Designer Jay Hilton, make their home in Hadlyme with Cookie and Macy.

ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION, founded in 1913, represents more than 51,000 actors and stage managers in the US. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. Equity seeks to foster the art of live theater as an essential component of our society.

Sets, costumes, and props are designed especially for The Goodspeed and are built in Goodspeed Musicals’ shops.

Goodspeed Musicals is a professional theatre operating under an agreement between the League of Resident Theatres and Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States.

Orchestra members are represented by The Connecticut Valley Federation of Musicians, AFM Local 400.

Goodspeed Musicals is a member of The League of Resident Theatres.

The scenic, costume, lighting and sound designers in LORT Theatres are represented by United Scenic Artists, Local USA-829 of the IATSE.

GOODSPEED’S MISSION STATEMENT

Goodspeed Musicals’ mission is to share the joy of musical theatre; to delight, inspire, and challenge audiences; to nurture creators; and to build and support a broad, diverse, and inclusive community.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The land on which Goodspeed Musicals is located in East Haddam and Chester, CT is the ancestral land of at least three tribes of Native Americans—the Wangunk, the Mohegan and the Nehantic tribes. We understand that the land which is now Haddam and East Haddam, was purchased from the native people in 1662 for thirty coats—worth about $100. We acknowledge those native Americans and the loss of their homeland—land on which we thrive today.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

Maggie is the story of the power of a mother’s love in the face of adversity. It is a celebration of the good that lives in all of us, and a reminder of the power of family and friendship.

Spanning over 20 years in the mining town of Lanark, Scotland, we first meet Maggie in 1954, a young wife and mother of two boys, expecting her third child, as Scotland still experiences the effects of rationing from WW2.

In 1968, Maggie is raising three boys on her own, as the threat of mine closures and increasing sectarian tensions have the potential to dangerously impact her sons’ futures. Up to 3,000 people a week are leaving Scotland to meet the demands of Commonwealth countries resulting in a ‘brain drain’ of young skilled labour.

By 1974, the discovery of oil in the North Sea, and the news that any revenue won’t

benefit Scotland to any significant degree while it remains part of the United Kingdom, directly impacts the futures of Maggie’s friends and family. It is against this backdrop that Maggie fights to raise her boys vowing ‘as long as I’m living, they’ll never be lost.’

Maggie is a story of an ordinary woman living a quietly heroic life. She is the mother in the background of our photographs, barely noticed, but who is holding us all together. For many of us on this project, Maggie is like Scotland. She is home. Waiting for us to return. Always there to put the kettle on.

Our creative team would like to express an enormous thank-you to every single person who has contributed to and cared for this endeavor along the way. It truly takes a village and we have been so fortunate to have built one around us with this show.

Coal Miners at Polkemmet Colliery Whitburn, West Lothian, Scotland.
A crowd of Scottish people wave goodbye to those leaving the country.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE—LEAVING A LEGACY

Since its inception, Goodspeed Musicals has particularly benefited from the unique advantages of planned gifts and bequests. Because such gifts provide financial support over time, they have been essential to Goodspeed Musicals’ ability to consistently move from strength to strength, plan for the future with confidence, and ensure millions more will enjoy award-winning productions for generations to come.

WILLIAM H. GOODSPEED LEGACY SOCIETY

Goodspeed Musicals thanks the members of the William H. Goodspeed Society who have included a future bequest to Goodspeed Musicals in their wills or estate plans.

SEPT 27 - OCT 20

From an Original Idea by Kyle Falconer & Laura Wilde

Songs by Kyle Falconer

Book by Laura Wilde & Johnny McKnight

Musical Direction & Arrangements by Gavin Whitworth

Directed by Andrew Panton & Tashi Gore

In a hopeful and empowering tale of modern romance, No Love Songs tells the story of Jessie and Lana -- young and in love one second and pregnant the very next. When Jessie is called away to tour with his band in America and post-partum depression sets in for Lana, they must learn to navigate the unique challenges of their new lives as parents. Through a powerful blend of humor, heart and indie rock music, you’ll be taken on a journey that captures the essence of love and realities of early parenthood. After sold-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in London, see it here first before it heads to New York!
