TRICIA PAOLUCCIO* (Dolly Parton)

Born and raised on a beautiful almond farm in Modesto, CA, Tricia Paoluccio had dreams of following in the musical footsteps of her lifelong inspiration, Dolly Parton. Her NY Broadway credits include: Fiddler on the Roof, The Green Bird and A View from the Bridge. A sampling of her varied Off-B’way credits include: Edward Albee’s The Lady From Dubuque, Cressida in Troilus and Cressida directed by Sir Peter Hall with Theatre for a New Audience and the comedy Debbie Does Dallas. Television includes a recurring role on the tv series Saint X, currently streaming on Hulu, Homeland, Bull, Chicago Med, The Affair, L&O, SVU, Blue Bloods and numerous others. Film includes the upcoming Portrait of a Young Man. Tricia (@triciapaoluccio) is also a celebrated visual artist who has elevated the art of pressed flowers into high design. MATTHEW RISCH* (Kevin) has most recently been seen in Hulu’s Saint X. Other recurring television credits include Modern Family, How To Get Away with Murder, Bonding, Looking, Switched at Birth, Tales of The City, and Younger, among others. He co-starred in the independent film Test and was featured in Sex and the City 2. His Broadway credits include Joey Evans in the last revival of Pal Joey, Carlos in the original company of Legally Blonde, Trip Wyeth in Other Desert Cities, and he was featured in Chicago the Musical. Other theatre credits include Sky in Barrington Stage’s Guys and Dolls and Zach in Signature Theatre’s A Chorus Line. Love to JR.

BRUCE VILANCH (Book) is delighted to be back working at The Terris Theatre. He was last here as the writer of A Sign of the Times, also directed by Gabriel Barre. Bruce is a multiple Emmy winner, some of them for a couple of the 25 Oscar telecasts he has written. He was a Hollywood Square for six years, just to the left of Whoopi, if that’s possible. And, he toured America and played Broadway as Edna Turnblad, Baltimore housewife, in Hairspray. Among his non-Emmy winning TV shows was Dolly, a big Sunday night variety show in the 80s that just didn’t’ make it. Somehow he, and Dolly, survived. And here they come again.

GABRIEL BARRE (Director, Choreographer & Co-Author) is an internationally-acclaimed director who directed Amazing Grace, on Broadway, on National Tour and here at Goodspeed. Gabe also recently directed a new version of Frank Wildhorn’s Wonderland, which he is now a co-author of, at the Tuacahn Theatre in St. George, Utah. Off-Broadway credits include the original productions of The Wild

Party (by Andrew Lippa); Summer of ’42; john & jen and Almost, Maine. National Tours include Amazing Grace, Pippin and Cinderella. Regional theater credits include A Sign of the Times at The Delaware Theatre Company and here at Goodspeed, the original productions of Memphis, as well as revivals of Billy Elliot, Sweeney Todd, Finian’s Rainbow and many new musicals at Goodspeed Musicals in CT. Among the many countries he has directed productions in are: China (recent production Sound of the Silk Road), Mexico (Mexican premiere of Billy Elliot), Japan (Japanese co-ed premiere of The Scarlet Pimpernel), Korea (world premiere of the new musical, Tears of Heaven), Germany, and numerous shows in the Czech Republic (including Carmen; Jesus Christ Superstar and the new Czech musical Holmes, The Legend and where he will be directing the Czech premiere of Beetlejuice next year). As an actor, he has been nominated for a Tony Award as Best Actor in a Musical. Gabe is also busy preparing to direct the world premiere of the exciting new musical, Reunion, by Frank Wildhorn and Rinne Groff about the reunion of a fictitious band from the Laurel Canyon era.

ALYSSANDRA DOCHERTY (Lighting Designer) [she/her] is a Philadelphia-based lighting designer originally from Vernon, NJ. After graduating from DeSales University, she continued her training as an apprentice at Goodspeed Musicals in the 2010 season. She went on to spend five seasons as the Lighting Supervisor at Philadelphia Theatre Company. Aly has toured internationally with Koresh Dance Company and BalletX to stages in Belarus, Mexico, Bermuda, Serbia, Italy, and all across the USA. ENDLA BURROWS (Director of Production) has 25 years of creative management experience with a focus on balancing artistic vision with logistic needs. She was an integral part of the Industrial Light and Magic team that managed dozens of films including the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Twister, Mission Impossible, and Pirates of the Caribbean As Executive Director of the Jim Henson Creature Shop, she oversaw bidding, production and client management for a diverse slate of television, film, commercial and theater productions including Sesame Street, Where the Wild Things Are, and Goodspeed’s production of Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas. At Digital Domain Endla supervised the Editorial, Tech services and Training departments for I, Robot and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Ever looking for new challenges, Endla has worked as an assistant director, technical consultant and graphics producer.

STEPHEN AGOSTO (Line Producer) is in his second season at Goodspeed Musicals. For nearly 14 years he served as Associate Director of Education and Senior Director of Artistic Engagement at Tony Award-winning Paper Mill Playhouse as part of the team that shepherded such productions as The Sting (starring Harry Connick Jr.), Unmasked: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber (World Premiere),

and Half Time (directed by Jerry Mitchell). He has taught theatre at both Fordham University and Rutgers University. He is a frequent speaker and guest lecturer across the country in the area of equitable college admissions practices in the arts. Stephen began his professional career at 8 years old as a dancer for Disneyland and went on to perform, choreograph, and direct over 70 productions around the world.

MICHAEL P. PRICE (Founding Director) Under the direction of Michael Price for 47 years commencing in 1968, Goodspeed Musicals became internationally recognized for its dedication to the advancement and preservation of the American Musical. For Goodspeed, Mr. Price produced over 250 classic and forgotten musicals, 100 new musicals, and transferred 19 shows to Broadway, earning 13 Tony Awards. Goodspeed itself was honored with two special Tony Awards. Mr. Price was recently inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame, which honors lifetime achievement in the American theater.

Mr. Price is the founder of the League of Historic American Theatres and a founding member of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. He serves on the Executive Committee of the American Theatre Wing and as a member the Tony Administration Committee. His board memberships include the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, the Johnny Mercer Foundation, the ASCAP Foundation, and numerous charitable and non-profit organizations. He received his BA from Michigan State University, MA from Minnesota, MFA from Yale, and holds honorary doctorates from Wesleyan University, Connecticut College, and The University of Hartford. He is married to Jo-Ann Nevas Price; they are the proud grandparents of Ezra and Ari.

DAVID B. BYRD (Managing Director) [he/him] was named Goodspeed Musicals’ first Managing Director in early 2021 and has held leadership positions at Connecticut’s Yale Repertory Theater, Westport Country Playhouse, and the Dwight/Edgewood Project in New Haven. With a career in the professional regional theatre spanning 20 years, he previously served as the Managing Director of Virginia Stage Company, Southeastern Virginia’s largest producing theatre. David has a passion for placemaking, thoughtful community engagement, arts advocacy and coalition-building. His commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity and access is steadfast, with appointments to anti-racism working groups and other related posts in academia and the non-profit sector. Prior to his work in Norfolk, David was Managing Director of the Clarence Brown Theatre (CBT) at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where he also served as Adjunct Professor in the UT-Knoxville Department of Theatre. David has served on the McClung Museum Academic Programs Advisory Board and the Great Schools Partnership Advisory Council, in addition to grants panels for the

National Endowment for the Arts, Tennessee Arts Commission, Virginia Commission for the Arts and the United Way.

In addition to participating in union negotiations with the League of Resident Theatres (LORT), David has guest lectured at Greensboro College, UNC-Greensboro, Virginia Wesleyan University, Christopher Newport University, Skidmore College and Texas Tech, among others. He received an MFA degree in Theater Management from Yale University School of Drama and a BA degree in Drama from UNC-Greensboro in his native North Carolina. David and his husband Jeff reside in nearby Portland, CT and enjoy hiking throughout the gorgeous CT woods when not taking in a live performance.

DONNA LYNN HILTON (Artistic Director) [she/ her] is a highly-effective creative producer with a significant record of leading, developing and producing new musical theatre works as well as inspiring a re-envisioning of the canon. She has led the creation of many of Goodspeed’s most successful productions of recent years, including the 2014 World Premiere of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn and last season’s 42nd Street. She inspired the creation of Goodspeed’s critically-acclaimed production of Show Boat and brought to Goodspeed the new musicals Because of Winn Dixie, Chasing Rainbows, Amazing Grace, Anne of Green Gables and this season’s Summer Stock and The 12. At The Terris Theatre, she led the early development of many new musicals, among them, The Circus In Winter, Passing Through and Band Geeks!. With the development of Hi, My Name Is Ben, she led Goodspeed’s first collaboration with a resident theatre outside the US—Scotland’s Dundee Rep Theatre. Donna Lynn led the creation of the Johnny Mercer Writers Grove, the partnership with the Johnny Mercer Foundation which welcomes nearly 50 musical theatre composers, lyricists and librettists to Goodspeed’s campus each winter and has become one of the premiere development opportunities available to emerging musical theatre writers. She led an expansion of Goodspeed’s Festival of New Musicals and through the Festival

brought to Goodspeed the first US development of the international hit Come From Away. Donna Lynn is a past-president of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. She serves as a Trustee for Dundee Rep Theatre/Scottish Dance Ensemble and, closer to home, CT Landmarks. Donna Lynn began her career as a stage manager of Musical Theatre and Opera and remains a proud member of Actors Equity Association. She and her husband, Sound Designer Jay Hilton, make their home in Hadlyme with Cookie and Macy.

Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. Terris Theatre Reopening Donors

Goodspeed is grateful to the donors listed below who raised their paddle to make a contribution at our 2022 Gala in support of the reopening of The Terris Theatre.

WRITER’S NOTES BY BRUCE VILANCH

You probably know all about Norma Terris because you probably live in the neighborhood. If you don’t, and you thought Norma Terris was a street in town, let me tell you one or two things.

Norma was a big Broadway star, first of The Ziegfeld Follies, then as the romantic lead in the original production of one of the greatest musicals of all time, Show Boat. She later became a noted philanthropist and steward of the arts, endowing the land we’re sitting on as well as other parcels nearby for theatrical and pastoral causes. In Florida, where she wintered, she created a ballet company.

I mention all this because our show is about a woman not unlike Norma, Dolly Parton. Dolly has become a significant philanthropist, donating to various projects that she doesn’t like to talk about, but she gives them money anyway. More than that, she reaches everyone who sees or hears her through her music and the strength of her personality. The sun never sets on Dolly Parton. It is always there and it is always shining.

One of the people it has been shining on since she was a little girl is our star, Tricia Paoluccio, who, with her husband, our director Gabriel Barre invited me to collaborate with them on an idea Tricia had been noodling over for some time but just couldn’t figure out how to realize. Then a not-so-funny thing happened....Covid-19. And we were all sitting at home wondering what to do with ourselves. And the idea exploded in her head and onto the page.

To tell you too much more would require a giant spoiler alert, but you might be interested in knowing how it got from that page, ok screen, to what you are about to see.

As part of the rescue plan for Covid-affected businesses, the government gave nonprofit arts organizations grants to make up for the audiences that weren’t there. Part of the grants went to developing new shows. We got one, we wrote one, and we did what everybody else did―a Zoom. Then we had to go to Dolly who let us use her songs and gave us her blessing, provided we cut one joke that I said I would cut and that was my final offer. She saw it my way.

Our show takes place in May of 2020, when the world had been shut down for about six weeks and a certain stir craziness was setting in. You may remember this yourself. The pandemic, especially in the early stages before vaccines, was a profound global event, probably the only one since World War II, and people are still talking about that, as they will talk about this.

Just for tonight, take one small step for mankind back to those weird, out-of-body days that we all experienced. This time, you will have an unforgettable companion.
