GOODSPEED MUSICALS | 2022 SEASON 7

A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR I first experienced this new musical adaptation of the L.M. Montgomery stories that so many of us have loved since childhood, in the summer of 2018. I was immediately transported and began the work of bringing this new Anne of Green Gables home to Goodspeed. By early 2019 we had committed to programming the show for the summer of 2020, and through the months and months of delays due to COVID we never once flagged in our commitment to Anne. It wasn’t “will we?,” but “when will we?” And at long last, here we are. I am grateful to Matte O’Brien and Matt Vinson for entrusting our team with their beautiful work and thrilled to welcome the all-female leadership of this musical—Direc-

tor Jenn Thompson, Choreographer Jennifer Jancuska and Music Supervisor Amanda Morton—to Goodspeed. This is truly an Anne of Green Gables like we’ve never seen before…and one which will assure the red-haired orphan who found her home in Avonlea remains alive for generations to come. Sound familiar? I thought so, too. Enjoy the show.

GOODSPEED MUSICALS | 2022 SEASON 17

WHO’S WHO DONNA LYNN HILTON (Artistic Director) is a highly-effective creative producer with a significant record of leading, developing and producing new musical theatre works as well as inspiring a re-envisioning of the classic musical theater canon. She has led the creation of many of Goodspeed’s most successful productions of the last 15 years, including the 2014 World Premiere of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn, developed with Universal Theatrical Group. She inspired the creation of Goodspeed’s critically acclaimed 2012 production of Show Boat which was subsequently licensed by Rodgers and Hammerstein and has been produced across the US and in the West End. Donna Lynn brought to Goodspeed the new musicals Because of Winn Dixie, Chasing Rainbows, Amazing Grace and Anne of Green Gables. At The Terris Theatre, she led the development of many new musicals to successful production, among them The Circus In Winter, Passing Through, Band Geeks! and A Sign of the Times. With the development of Hi, My Name is Ben, she led Goodspeed’s first collaboration with a resident theatre outside the US—Scotland’s Dundee Rep Theatre. Donna Lynn led the creation of the Johnny Mercer Writers Grove at Goodspeed, the partnership with the Johnny Mercer Foundation which welcomes nearly 50 musical theatre composers, lyricists and librettists to Goodspeed’s campus each winter and has become one of the premiere development opportunities available to emerging musical theatre writers. She led an expansion of Goodspeed’s Festival of New Musicals and through the Festival brought to Goodspeed the first US development of the now international hit Come From Away. Donna Lynn is a past-President of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. She currently serves as a Trustee of Dundee Rep Theatre/Scottish Dance Ensemble in Dundee, Scotland and on the Advisory Panel for the Rhinebeck Writers Retreat. Donna Lynn began her career as a stage manager of Musical Theatre and Opera and remains a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association. She and her husband, Sound Designer Jay Hilton, make their home in Hadlyme with Cookie and Macy.

ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION, founded in 1913, represents more than 51,000 actors and stage managers in the US. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. Equity seeks to foster the art of live theater as an essential component of our society. Sets, costumes, and props are designed especially for The Goodspeed and are built in Goodspeed Musicals’ shops. Goodspeed Musicals is a professional theatre operating under an agreement between the League of Resident Theatres and Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States. Orchestra members are represented by The Connecticut Valley Federation of Musicians, AFM Local 400. Goodspeed Musicals is a member of The League of Resident Theatres. The scenic, costume, lighting and sound designers in LORT Theatres are represented by United Scenic Artists, Local USA-829 of the IATSE.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The land on which Goodspeed Musicals is located in East Haddam and Chester, CT is the ancestral land of at least three tribes of Native Americans—the Wangunk, the Mohegan and the Nehantic tribes. We understand that the land which is now Haddam and East Haddam, was purchased from the native people in 1662 for thirty coats—worth about $100. We acknowledge those native Americans and the loss of their homeland—land on which we thrive today.

WRITERS’ NOTES by Matte O’Brien (Book & Lyrics) & Matt Vinson (Music) love and be loved, to belong, is timeless. I think that’s why, over a hundred years after L.M. Montgomery first dreamed up Anne of Green Gables, the story endures.

Matt Vinson & Matte O’Brien

MATTE O’BRIEN’S NOTES To me, Anne of Green Gables is a love story—or rather—it’s many love stories. L.M. Montgomery explores endless shades of love throughout the Avonlea tales: romantic love and platonic love—love between friends, and siblings, and parents and children, and mentors, and even frenemies. Yet somewhat uniquely, she never places one form of love above another. In so many stories romantic love is presented as the ideal and most important type of love. But that’s not the case in much of L.M. Montgomery’s work; one of the greatest love stories she tells in Anne of Green Gables is the deep platonic bond between two unmarried siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. They share a profound connection; some would call them soulmates, or perhaps, kindred spirits. Growing up as a queer person in a conservative town, I never felt like I belonged. I suppose we’ve all had that feeling at some point in our lives. When my mother first introduced me and my sisters to Anne, I felt an instant connection with the character. This red-haired, freckled orphan, who was melodramatic, bookish, overly verbose and imaginative, with a quick temper and a stubborn nature, didn’t seem to fit into the social constructs of the town of Avonlea. She was somehow “other,” like me—like so many of us. We’ve all had the feeling of standing outside a group or community, looking in, longing to be seen, to be recognized, to have our value acknowledged, to connect. That longing to

Though the show is set in the period of the books, the turn of the 1900s, the script and score have a very contemporary flare. When we would talk to people about the piece, they seemed to either think it had to be Little House on the Prairie or Spring Awakening. That it would either be a quaint children’s show, or somehow betray the beloved aesthetic of the original work. Our vision was always a show that felt simultaneously classic and contemporary. We wanted people who knew the Green Gables stories to recognize and love our version, and people who’d never encountered them to be converted to full on “F-Annes with an E!” MATT VINSON’S NOTES Similar to Matte, I relate most to Anne’s arc as an outsider longing for a place to belong in the world. Her ability to hold the most determined, confident stances while simultaneously wearing her heart on her sleeve is a defining trait that calls for a rather expansive emotional (and musical) range. Stylistically, we drew from musical theatre, folk, rock, pop, and country influences to create the score—definitely a bit of an eclectic mix! Our orchestrator, Justin Goldner, is a true genius in his ability to weave together an instrumental texture that allows for all the comedic and heartfelt ups and downs while maintaining a cohesive sound that blends both electric and acoustic elements. We’ve been blessed to work with three incredible artists throughout the development process: Jenn Thompson, Jennifer Jancuska, and Amanda Morton. The direction, choreography, and music direction of this piece are thrilling. Jancuska’s exciting choreography and musical staging is so fresh and unexpected. Morton is hands down one of the best musical supervisors in the business—she not only shapes the sonic world with precision and artistry, but also drives powerful musical interpretations that are fully-realized performances. And, Thompson—I realize Goodspeed audiences know well what she’s capable of—but, let me be the first to say: you ain’t seen nothing yet! GOODSPEED MUSICALS | 2022 SEASON 19
