RAGTIME APRIL 25 - JUNE 15
Book by Terrence McNally | Music by Stephen Flaherty
Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens | Based on the novel “RAGTIME” by E.L. Doctorow
Set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, Ragtime weaves together the stories of three fictional families striving for the American Dream. As an affluent society woman, an imaginative Jewish immigrant, and an optimistic Harlem pianist navigate a changing world, they confront history’s timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair. With a Tony Award-winning score which blends ragtime, blues, jazz and show tunes, it’s a powerful, sweeping saga of America!
20TH ANNIVERSARY PRODUCTION!
ALL SHOOK UP JUNE 27 - AUG 17
Inspired by and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley | Book by Joe DiPietro
The legendary songs of Elvis Presley ignite a rockin’ romp set in the Fabulous ’50s. When a guitar-playing stranger on a motorcycle roars into a sleepy town, nothing will be the same. Boy meets girl and soon everybody can’t help falling in love. Mistaken identity, mismatched lovers and the magic of romance come together in a free-wheeling rock and roll comedy. Celebrate the 20th anniversary production of a show that began at Goodspeed with non-stop classics, from “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Hound Dog,” to “Love Me Tender” and “Don’t Be Cruel.”

PROGRAM NOTES BY MICHAEL FLING | ASSOCIATE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Nostalgia has always been a popular motif in American fiction. Considering how young a country we are, some of our most foundational culture is rooted in stories that harken back to a time that predates the author, often of their childhood. To Kill A Mockingbird, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and Little Women all fit this bill.
So it shouldn’t be a surprise that A Christmas Story has become one of the most enduringly popular films around the holiday season. But its path to notoriety is about as unlikely as Ralphie acquiring the “official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle…with the compass and stock and this thing which tells time” that he so desperately desires.
Based on short stories about author Jean Shepherd’s childhood that he transcribed after performing them on the radio, the Yuletide flick premiered in movie theaters in 1983 to not a ton of acclaim. In fact, by Christmas of that year, it was already gone from most theaters! Though not a flop by any means, it seemed like it might fade into obscurity.
Much like The Wizard of Oz, another piece of iconic Americana, the movie rose to prominence on television, with annual cable broadcasts which began as early as December of 1985, and the cutting-edge technologies of VHS and Betamax—those are videotapes, for any young’uns who might not even know what a videotape is—allowing people to add it to their family Christmas movie nights. The popularity on the small screen led TNT to begin a 24-hour marathon in 1997, with twelve consecutive showings between December 24th and 25th, proving so successful that airings have continued… peaking with 54.4 million viewers in 2008. And despite declining ratings, it still scored 32 million viewers in 2020.
Cut to an age where films are frequent fodder for new musicals, Ralphie and his unabashed quest for the ultimate present from Santa seemed ripe for adaptation.
After an initial production with different writers at Kansas City Rep in 2009, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul were brought in to write a new score (they made their professional writing debut here at Goodspeed with James and the Giant Peach at The Terris Theatre in
2010). The new version opened at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre in 2010. It had a limited New York run in 2012, and though its stint on Broadway was short—it managed to land Tony nominations for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score that year.
The show hasn’t been as frequently produced as you might expect considering theatres across the country always seem to be looking for fresh Christmas content. The score is one of the strongest in contemporary musical theatre (no surprise from Pasek & Paul, who would go on to pen the powerhouse score of Dear Evan Hansen, the cinematic sensations La La Land and The Greatest Showman, and the crowd-pleasing tunes for the 3rd season of Only Murders in the Building). And Joseph Robinette’s book is a lovely and efficient adaptation of immensely memorable and quotable source material.
I’m guessing that has a lot to do with the demands placed on the juvenile cast, who all need to be true triple threats and carry quite a bit of the show on their shoulders. But wait until you see the fantastic company assembled under the capable hands of director Hunter Foster (Goodspeed’s Drowsy Chaperone and Connecticut Christmas Carol), choreographer Mara Newberry Greer (who was in the original Broadway company of the show and has staged numerous productions since), and music director Andrew Smithson. The Goodspeed production fires on all cylinders and will no doubt remain as warm a memory in our minds as Ralphie’s best Christmas ever.

GOODSPEED’S MISSION STATEMENT
Goodspeed Musicals’ mission is to share the joy of musical theatre; to delight, inspire, and challenge audiences; to nurture creators; and to build and support a broad, diverse, and inclusive community.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The land on which Goodspeed Musicals is located in East Haddam and Chester, CT is the ancestral land of at least three tribes of Native Americans—the Wangunk, the Mohegan and the Nehantic tribes. We understand that the land which is now Haddam and East Haddam was purchased from the native people in 1662 for thirty coats—worth about $100. We acknowledge those native Americans and the loss of their homeland—land on which we thrive today.
