MICHAEL STEWART (Book) scored on Broadway the first time when he won a Tony Award for his Bye Bye Birdie libretto. He was the librettist for Carnival (Drama Critics Circle Award) and Hello, Dolly!, which earned him both a Tony and Drama Critics prize. Stewart also wrote the lyrics for Barnum and the book for: George M! (with Francine and John Pascal), Mack & Mabel, The Grand Tour and 42nd Street (with Mark Bramble), Harrigan and Hart, and I Love My Wife

DONNA LYNN HILTON (Artistic Director) is a highly-effective creative producer with a signifi cant record of leading, developing and producing new musical theatre works as well as inspiring a re-envisioning of the classic musical theater canon. She has led the creation of many of Goodspeed’s most successful productions of the last 15 years, including the 2014 World Premiere of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn, developed with Universal Theatrical Group. She inspired the creation of Goodspeed’s critically acclaimed 2012 production of Show Boat which was subsequently licensed by Rodgers and Hammerstein and has been produced across the US and in the West End. Donna Lynn brought to Goodspeed the new musicals Because of Winn Dixie, Chasing Rainbows, Amazing Grace and Anne of Green Gables. At The Terris Theatre, she led the development of many new musicals to successful production, among them The Circus In Winter, Passing Through, Band Geeks! and A Sign of the Times. With the development of Hi, My Name is Ben, she led Goodspeed’s first collaboration with a resident theatre outside the US—Scotland’s Dundee Rep Theatre. Donna Lynn led the creation of the Johnny Mercer Writers Grove at Goodspeed, the partnership with the Johnny Mercer Foundation which welcomes nearly 50 musical theatre composers, lyricists and librettists to Goodspeed’s campus each winter and has become one of the premiere development opportunities available to emerging musical theatre writers. She led an expansion of Goodspeed’s Festival of New Musicals and through the Festival brought to Goodspeed the first US development of the now international hit Come From Away. WHO

HARRY WARREN & AL DUBIN (Music & Lyrics) were legendary tunesmiths, both as a team and as individuals. Between the two, their prodigious careers spanned six decades. Warren & Dubin

ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION, founded in 1913, represents more than 51,000 actors and stage managers in the US. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. Equity seeks to foster the art of live theater as an essential component of our society.

wrote several Broadway musicals and revues, including White Lights (1927) and Streets of Paris (1939). They wrote songs for over two dozen Hollywood musicals, including Gold Diggers of Broadway (1929), Sally (1929), 42nd Street (1933), Moulin Rouge (1934), Dames (1934), Stars Over Broadway (1935), Streets of Paris (1939) and Stage Door Canteen (1943). Their combined output of songs can only be described as astonishing. Highlights include “Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” “You’re Getting to Be a Habit with Me,” “Keep Young and Beautiful,” “We’re In the Money,” “The Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “I Only Have Eyes for You,” and “Lullaby of Broadway.”

Al Dubin, born in Switzerland in 1891, died in NY in 1945. Harry Warren was born in Brooklyn in 1893 and passed away in 1981. His first hit song was written in 1922, and he scored his last movie in 1962. His other collaborators included Ira Gershwin, Billy Rose, Joe Young, Gus Kahn, Arthur Freed, Johnny Mercer, Mack Gordon, Mort Dixon, Bud Green and Ralph Blane.

MARK BRAMBLE (Book) was nominated for a 2001 Tony Award for his work on 42nd Street. He began his theatrical career working for David Merrick. He directed 42nd Street in London, Tokyo, Sydney and Amsterdam and is the author of Barnum (Tony Award nomination for Best Book and Best Musical) and The Three Musketeers and co-author (with Michael Stewart) of The Grand Tour; Treasure Island; Elizabeth and Essex and 42nd Street (Tony Award Best Musical, Laurence Olivier Award for Musical of the Year). Bramble directed the rock and roll extravaganza Fat Pig for the Leicester Haymarket Theatre in England and Notre Dame, based on Victor Hugo’s novel, at Saddler’s Wells in London; he also created the radio musical In With the Old for the BBC. He is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers and the Dramatists Guild.

In our brand-new production, we’ve cast a true triple-threat theatrical icon to embody the character, which allows much more realistic complexity to the character and the conflict at the center of the story. Losing her ability to dance now means something to the character of Dorothy. It puts her entire career at risk—and makes it far more plausible that Sawyer might actually succeed in taking over for her, and come back a star.

“Come and meet those dancin’ feet, on the avenue I’m takin’ you to 42nd Street”

The first lines of the beloved title song of 42nd Street tell us exactly what the show is—a love letter to New York City, Broadway, and dancing. For a show that is synonymous with old school musical theatre, it’s surprising that it is just over 40 years old.

Like many older shows, there are some ele ments to 42nd Street that Skinner and Mark Bramble (Co-Librettist) had wanted to revisit to make the show more palatable for con temporary audiences, but never got to work on due to Bramble’s untimely death. We’re thrilled Goodspeed audiences will be the first to see a brand-new 42nd Street from the man who knows it best.

Prior to its infamous debut at the Winter Garden Theatre (where famed producer David Merrick announced the original director/cho reographer Gower Champion’s sudden death from the stage after curtain call), 42nd Street was best known as one of the more famous pre-Code Hollywood musicals featuring the iconic choreography of Busby Berkley. And while the film features many of the Al Dubin and Harry Warren standards that went on to populate the musical adaptation (“Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” “Young and Healthy,” “You’re Get ting to be a Habit,” “42nd Street”), the tone is decidedly more risqué and dark than you’d think for a 1933 piece of escapism.

It may seem that this was always the intent of the original creative team, led by the incomparable Gower Champion, but the reality was much different. All musicals evolve and change over the course of their creation, and having been the Dance Assistant on the original production, and integral to every other first-class remounting of 42nd Street, Goodspeed’s Direc tor/Choreographer Randy Skinner knows the show inside and out.

19GOODSPEED MUSICALS | 2022 SEASON

Skinner has long felt that 42nd Street’s particular development included quite a bit of shaping the show around the performers in the original company, most notably in the role of Dorothy Brock, originally portrayed by Tammy Grimes. As a non-dancing star, much of the shape of her character was formed around Grimes’ abilities, and therefore the triple-threat Doro thy Brock of the film became an aging leading lady. How were we to believe that chorus girl Peggy Sawyer was truly capable of taking over for the aging character actress?

Of course in its translation to Broadway, the score was expanded to include many additional songs that Dubin and Warren (and occasionally lyricist Johnny Mercer) wrote for many other famous movie musicals including The Gold Diggers of 1933 (and ’35 and ’37), Go Into Your Dance, Dames, and more. And the parade of light toe-tappers is arguably what turns the show into the quintessential piece of escapism.

GOODSPEED GUILD: The Goodspeed Guild is a volunteer organization dedicated to supporting Goodspeed Musicals’ operations and productions. Since 1975 it has provided services to artists, patrons, and staff on a year-round basis, while offering its members the opportunity to become part of the behind-the scenes activities at Goodspeed. To find out about volunteer opportunities that fit your interests and schedule, visit our website at goodspeed.org or contact Amy Campbell at 203-443-3338.

The land on which Goodspeed Musicals is located in East Haddam and Chester, CT is the ancestral land of at least three tribes of Native Americans—the Wangunk, the Mohegan and the Nehantic tribes. We understand that the land which is now Haddam and East Haddam, was purchased from the native people in 1662 for thirty coats—worth about $100. We acknowledge those native Americans and the loss of their homeland—land on which we thrive today.
