Put on your dancing shoes because Crazy For You, the multiple Tony Award®-winning musical comedy is tapping its way onto the Goodspeed stage. When Broadway hopeful Bobby Child is sent to Nevada to foreclose on an abandoned theatre, he hatches a plan to save the town and get the girl—by putting on a show! Featuring glorious Gershwin melodies including “I Got Rhythm,” “Embraceable You,” and “Someone To Watch Over Me,” it’s a spectacular celebration of classic song-anddance musicals. Who could ask for anything more?

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (Music) has composed the scores of some of the world’s most famous musicals. His shows have run continuously in London’s West End for 50 years and ran for 43 uninterrupted years on Broadway. When the original Sunset Boulevard joined School of Rock, Cats and The Phantom of the Opera, he equalled Rodgers & Hammerstein’s record of four shows running simultaneously on Broadway. He is one of the select group of artists with EGOT status, having received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards. Lloyd Webber owns six London theatres, including the iconic London Palladium and Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Reopened in July 2021, the latter was completely restored and renovated at a cost of over £60 million. This was one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by a private theatre owner in recent times. His mantra is that every penny of profit made from his theatres is ploughed back into the buildings for their conservation and development. Lloyd Webber is passionate about

the importance of musical education and diversity in the arts. Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation provides 30 performing arts scholarships every year for talented students with financial need, and supports a range of projects such as the Music In Secondary Schools Trust (MiSST). In academic year September 2025-26, 14,885 children are being given free musical tuition and instruments as part of MiSST’s Andrew Lloyd Webber Programme. The Foundation also commissions research into diversity in theatre. Andrew Lloyd Webber has composed music for globally significant moments. Most recently, he was asked to compose “Make a Joyful Noise,” the anthem for the Coronation of King Charles III. Andrew Lloyd Webber was knighted in 1992, created an honorary life peer in 1997, and made a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter by King Charles III in 2024. He is the only person in the arts ever granted this personal honor by a monarch.
TIM RICE (Lyrics) has worked in music, theatre, and films since 1965 when he met Andrew Lloyd Webber, a fellow struggling songwriter. Rather than pursue Tim’s ambitions to write rock or pop songs they turned their attention to Andrew’s obsession—musical theatre. Their first collaboration was based on the life of Dr. Thomas Barnardo, the Victorian philanthropist, The Likes of Us Their next three works together were much more successful—Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. Tim has since worked with other distinguished popular composers such as Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), Alan Menken (Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast), Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (Chess), and Stuart Brayson (From Here to Eternity). He has also written with Freddie Mercury, Burt Bacharach and Rick Wakeman among others. Tim founded his own cricket team in 1973, which has now played over 750 matches, and was president of MCC, founded in 1789, in 2002. He crops up here and there in all branches of the media, drawing on his extensive knowledge of the history of popular music. As an EGOT, he is one of only 17 people in the world to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award, was knighted by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1994, and is the proud owner of a boxer dog and two dozen chickens.

With the development of Hi, My Name Is Ben and No Love Songs, she led Goodspeed’s ongoing international collaboration with Scotland’s Dundee Rep Theatre and helped re-envision The Writers Grove for Scottish, UK and Indian writers on the campus at Cove Park, Scotland. Donna Lynn was invited to represent US musical theatre producers at the 2024 K-Musical Market in Seoul, South Korea. A past-president of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, she currently serves as a Trustee for Dundee Rep Theatre/Scottish Dance Ensemble and, closer to home, CT Landmarks. Donna Lynn is proud to have begun her career as a respected stage manager of Musical Theatre and Opera. She and her husband, Sound Designer Jay Hilton, make their home in Hadlyme with Cookie and Macy. “I am grateful to the entire Goodspeed team for their unending commitment to excellence.”

PROGRAM NOTES BY MICHAEL FLING | ASSOCIATE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Ultimately, music is what makes musicals musicals. Powerful melodies that carry emotion, forward plot, and build character define the art form. The strength of a show’s score is what separates the good from the great. And in the case of Jesus Christ Superstar, the songs struck a chord heard round the world from the moment the needle hit the vinyl.
Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and Lyricist Tim Rice found success in the UK by turning the Old Testament story of Joseph and his coat of many colors into Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and at the suggestion of the Dean of St. Paul’s, began work on adapting the story of Jesus and his disciples next. Originally released as a concept album because they couldn’t get backing for a theatrical production, the browncolored album of Jesus Christ Superstar was an immediate sensation, earning gold status only three weeks after its US release in 1970.
who reportedly believed the work could bring more people to Christianity than almost anything before it.
More than fifty years later, the score remains one of the most celebrated in the musical theatre canon. Ranging from thrilling rock to spiritual euphoria, it continues to resonate with audiences —not unlike the story of Christ himself. While dramatizing the apprehensions of both Jesus and Judas remains challenging for many audiences, the point of view offers a humanity to both men that paints a three-dimensional picture of two figures whose lives and choices shaped human history. In subtracting the sheen of divinity from Jesus, Superstar makes his eventual crucifixion an even more daringly selfless act. In centering Judas’ skepticism, it places the question of individual belief at the heart of the narrative—underscoring that there can’t be faith without doubt.
Due to the popularity of the album, there was immense demand for Jesus Christ Superstar to make it to the stage. After over twenty unauthorized productions all over the US had to be shut down, the rock opera landed on Broadway in 1971 to mixed notices—hardly the reception you’d expect for a musical whose original record was so popular it reached #1 on the Billboard Pop Album charts, beating out Carole King’s Tapestry!
But it’s no secret that this retelling of “the greatest story ever told” was divisive. Many religious groups deemed it blasphemous for how it depicted characters and chronicled the final days of Christ. It inspired such strong feelings that the initial New York outing faced protests outside the theatre “every night” according to Jeff Fenholt, the original Jesus. Yet the outrage was matched—if not exceeded—by enthusiasm. The production went on to run for over 700 performances and later became a commercially, if not critically, successful film. Among its most surprising admirers was Pope John Paul VI,
As is the Goodspeed standard, we have an exemplary creative team bringing this story to our stage. Tatiana Pandiani, our director, has embraced the 70s roots of the music in her approach and inspired Amy Campbell to let dance drive the modern urgency of the production. Adam Souza’s exhilarating music direction of the iconic score will leave your ears mesmerized as we continue to marvel at his versatility as an artist. The cast is one of the finest and most exciting we’ve assembled and the designers have crafted a world unlike anything we’ve ever put on the stage.
Whether you enter Jesus Christ Superstar as a questioning skeptic or devoted follower, there is a character on stage who shares your point of view. And whether you have known every lyric since you first listened the album fifty-five years ago or have never heard this glorious score before—there’s no doubt you’ll emerge “changed—yes, really changed” by hearing it live in the intimacy of the Opera House.

MISSION STATEMENT
Goodspeed Musicals’ mission is to share the joy of musical theatre; to delight, inspire, and challenge audiences; to nurture creators; and to build and support a broad, diverse, and inclusive community.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The land on which Goodspeed Musicals is located in East Haddam and Chester, CT is the ancestral land of at least three tribes of Native Americans—the Wangunk, the Mohegan and the Nehantic tribes. We understand that the land which is now Haddam and East Haddam was purchased from the native people in 1662 for thirty coats—worth about $100. We acknowledge those native Americans and the loss of their homeland—land on which we thrive today.
DEDICATED PERFORMANCES
Goodspeed Musicals is pleased to offer members and friends an extraordinary opporunity to support the finest musical theatre while providing a once-in-a-lifetime tribute to a friend or loved one. If you are interested in dedicating a performance to honor someone, please contact Rebekah Moses at 860-615-0365 or rmoses@goodspeed.org.
VOLUNTEER
AT GOODSPEED
The Goodspeed Guild is a volunteer organization dedicated to supporting Goodspeed Musicals’ operations and productions. Since 1975 it has provided services to artists, patrons, and staff on a year-round basis, while offering its members the opportunity to become part of the behind-the scenes activities at Goodspeed.
