GOODSPEED’S MISSION STATEMENT
Goodspeed Musicals’ mission is to share the joy of musical theatre; to delight, inspire, and challenge audiences; to nurture creators; and to build and support a broad, diverse, and inclusive community.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The land on which Goodspeed Musicals is located in East Haddam and Chester, CT is the ancestral land of at least three tribes of Native Americans—the Wangunk, the Mohegan and the Nehantic tribes. We understand that the land which is now Haddam and East Haddam, was purchased from the native people in 1662 for thirty coats—worth about $100. We acknowledge those native Americans and the loss of their homeland—land on which we thrive today.

ELVIS PRESLEY Elvis Aaron Presley, in the humblest of circumstances, was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. He and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1948, and Elvis graduated from Humes High School there in 1953. Elvis’ musical influences were the pop and country music of the time, the gospel music he heard in church and at the all-night gospel sings he frequently attended, and the black R&B he absorbed on historic Beale Street as a Memphis teenager. In 1954, he began his singing career with the legendary Sun Records
label in Memphis. In late 1955, his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor. By 1956, he was an international sensation. With a sound and style that uniquely combined his diverse musical influences and blurred and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time, he ushered in a whole new era of American music and popular culture. He starred in 33 successful films, made history with his television appearances and specials, and knew great acclaim through his many, often record-breaking, live concert performances on tour and in Las Vegas. Globally, he has sold over one billion records, more than any other artist. His American sales have earned him gold, platinum or multi-platinum awards for 150 different albums and singles, far more than any other artist. Among his many awards and accolades were 14 Grammy nominations (3 wins) from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, which he received at age 36, and his being named One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 by the United States Jaycees. Without any of the special privileges his celebrity status might have afforded him, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. His talent, good looks, sensuality, charisma, and good humor endeared him to millions, as did the humility and human kindness he demonstrated throughout his life. Known the world over by his fast name, he is regarded as one of the most important figures of twentieth century popular culture. Elvis died at his Memphis home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977.

leading, developing and producing new musical theatre works as well as inspiring a re-envisioning of the canon. She led the creation of many of Goodspeed’s most acclaimed productions including Summer Stock, The 12, Anne of Green Gables and last season’s Maggie. An advocate for creators and the creative process, she is committed to prioritizing new work development at Goodspeed. At The Terris Theatre, she has led the early development of many new musicals, among them Passing Through, Private Jones and last year’s A Complicated Woman. She launched Goodspeed’s first formal commissioning program – GoodWorks – which brought to life Joriah Kwamé’s Little Miss Perfect and will welcome the world premiere of the new musical The Snow Goose to a Goodspeed stage soon. With the development of Hi, My Name Is Ben and No Love Songs, she led Goodspeed’s ongoing international collaboration with Scotland’s Dundee Rep Theatre and helped re-envision The Writers Grove for Scottish, UK and Indian writers on the campus at Cove Park, Scotland. Donna Lynn was invited to represent US musical theatre producers at the 2024 K-Musical Market in Seoul, South Korea. A past-president of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, she currently serves as a Trustee for Dundee Rep Theatre/Scottish Dance Ensemble and, closer to home, CT Landmarks. PROGRAM NOTES BY MICHAEL FLING | ASSOCIATE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Oh, the jukebox musical. It has become a favorite punching bag of theatergoers who enjoy bemoaning the state of the art form. But before we had properly integrated scores that became the mainstream of the genre, most Broadway fare was made up of popular music from the day with a very thin plot. We just had a different name for it…it was called musical comedy!
At the dawn of the 21st century, when the world was in turmoil after the events of September 11, it should come as no surprise that a little show called Mamma Mia! became a worldwide sensation. Taking ABBA’s catalogue of music and transforming it into a delectable piece of escapism revived an old staple of musical theatre. Naturally, every music publisher on planet earth wanted to bring their beloved tunes to musical theatre audiences.
Enter the King of Rock and Roll. Or rather, his organization, who called Joe DiPietro and asked if he might be interested in bringing Elvis’ catalogue to life as a musical. As a lifelong fan of Graceland’s favorite son, he immediately jumped at the opportunity.
DiPietro spent hours with the discography and quickly realized that the vast majority of The Hillbilly Cat’s songs were about, of course, love. And what theatrical writer knew more about love than William Shakespeare? It seemed like a match made in…well, a Shakespearean comedy! What if he could combine the classic world of The Bard’s comedy with The King’s iconic American sound?
He set about to create a universe where the songs felt like the natural extension of whoever these characters might be. Aided by another devotee of the infamous pelvis from Memphis, Music Supervisor Stephen Oremus, they put the show in a setting that perfectly evoked the score – middle America, 1955. With director Christopher Ashley attached, who had previously directed five productions at Goodspeed, and DiPietro’s history with Goodspeed (he had written four shows that
Goodspeed produced), they felt The Terris was a “natural choice” to be the birthplace of the show. A developmental opportunity where they could get their hands dirty and really work on the show in front of paying audiences. Featuring a company of 19 actors, it was a hit right from the jump with both the Goodspeed staff and audiences –despite many changes throughout the process.
After a successful Terris production and another stop out of town in Chicago, the team knew they had a great show on their hands. Unfortunately, by the time they made it to New York, Broadway critics and audiences had more than just soured on jukebox musicals— they despised them. Good Vibrations, based on the music of the Beach Boys, was slammed by critics and closed after less than 100 performances. The added scrutiny on All Shook Up bogged down what had been a delightful, carefree romp. It ultimately opened to subpar notices, and limped to a six month run with no Tony nominations and little fanfare.
But as has become true of some shows that don’t find success in New York, regional theatres, summer stocks, and amateur groups have given this musical the life it deserves. They couldn’t help falling in love with All Shook Up. And rightly so! Its licensing life has been so successful, it has even managed to recoup the show’s original investment!
People frequently ask us how often shows move from The Terris Theatre to the Opera House, and truthfully, the answer is not that often. But with 2025 marking the 20th anniversary of the show’s Broadway run, we felt it was time for All Shook Up to finally make its way to The Goodspeed. Helmed by Danny Goldstein (who was the Associate Director on the original production at The Terris and on Broadway), choreographed by the joyous Byron Easley, and musically directed with the ears of Adam Souza and Adam J. Rineer, we’re thrilled to bring the show back to its charming roots and celebrating its enduring appeal. So c’mon everybody, be fools and fall in love with the jailhouse-rockin’ fun of All Shook Up.
