On the windswept coast of England an unlikely bond forms between Philip, a reclusive artist shunned by society, and Frith, a resilient young woman, when they rescue a wounded snow goose. With World War II looming, their friendship allows her to imagine a life beyond her village, and him to confront his own humanity as he sets sail on a daring journey to save soldiers trapped at Dunkirk. Discover an unforgettable new musical with a soaring score that will fill your heart.
The Snow Goose is a sweeping tale of love, purpose and the value of life featuring a character who is... well... a snow goose. To bring this character to life, we are creating an immersive world of Ensemble-driven puppetry. She will fly above the stage, around the balcony, and directly over your head—she will bring you joy and tears, but never will you lose sight of what truly brings her life: a community of artists.

The Snow Goose by Paul Gallico has been a favorite of mine for over 40 years. In 2022, Goodspeed optioned the book and commissioned Claire McKenzie and Scott Gilmour to adapt it into a musical. We have lovingly developed the show over the past 4 years through multiple readings and workshops as well as a very popular appearance in our 2024 Festival of New Musicals. With this World Premiere, we bring the beloved story to new life on The Goodspeed stage. Thank you for being an audience that embraces new work. Now you will be able to say: “I saw it first at Goodspeed.” Thrilling, isn’t it?

GEORGE GERSHWIN (Music & Lyrics) was born in Brooklyn on September 26, 1898, and began his musical training when he was 13. At 16, he quit high school to work as a “song plugger” for a music publisher, and soon he was writing songs himself. “Swanee,” as introduced by Al Jolson, brought George his first real fame and led to his writing a succession of 22 musical comedies, most with his older brother, Ira. The Gershwins’ shows include Lady, Be Good!; Oh, Kay!; Strike Up The Band; Girl Crazy; and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Of Thee I Sing. From his early career George had ambitions to compose serious music. These ambitions were realized in some of his masterpieces, among them “Rhapsody In Blue,” “Concerto In F,” “An American In Paris” and “Second Rhapsody.” In the late ‘20s George became fascinated by the DuBose Heyward novel Porgy, recognizing it as a perfect vehicle for opera using jazz and blues idioms. George’s folk opera Porgy and Bess opened in Boston on September 30, 1935, and had its Broadway premiere two weeks later. In 1937, George was at the height of his career. In Hollywood, working on the score of The Goldwyn Follies, he collapsed and on July 11 died of a brain tumor. He was not quite 39 years old.
IRA GERSHWIN (Music & Lyrics) Gershwin, the first songwriter to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize, was born in New York City on December 6, 1896. In 1917 The Evening Sun published his first song (“You May Throw All The Rice You Desire But Please, Friends, Throw No Shoes”). Four years later, Ira enjoyed his first major stage success, Two Little Girls in Blue, written with another Broadway newcomer, Vincent Youmans. In 1924 Ira and his brother George created the smash hit Lady, Be Good! and went on to continue their remarkable collaboration through a dozen major stage scores, producing such standards as “Fascinating Rhythm,” “The Man I Love,” “‘S Wonderful,” “Embraceable You,” “I Got Rhythm,” “But Not For Me” and others far too numerous to mention. During his long career, Ira also enjoyed productive collaborations with such songwriters as Harold Arlen, Vernon Duke, Kurt Weill, Burton Lane and Jerome Kern, with whom he created his greatest song hit of any one year, “Long Ago And Far Away.” Ira Gershwin died on August 17, 1983, in Beverly Hills, California.

PROGRAM NOTES BY
MICHAEL FLING | DIRECTOR/ASSOCIATE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Musical theatre and pure escapism have always gone hand in hand. With roots in operetta (a lighter form of opera), early musical comedies gained a reputation as being a medium for light, fun, frothy entertainment—AKA, escapism. This naturally boomed during the Great Depression, as people were willing to spend their hardearned money on the top premium ticket price of $3.00 to be distracted from the woes of the world.
Though he claims it is the hardest score he’s ever had to play, we’re in the best hands with Adam Souza as music director. The lush Gershwin melodies and remarkable dance arrangements (created by an unsung hero of the original production, Peter Howard) are right in Adam’s wheelhouse, and with a brand-new orchestration by Ryan O’Connell, your ears are in for a treat.
Arguably, the king of Broadway melodies at the time was George Gershwin. Renowned from his Tin Pan Alley days and earlier Broadway successes, Gershwin had his first hit of the decade with Girl Crazy—a show that featured Ginger Rogers and Ethel Merman in their stage debuts.
Nearly 60 years later, Ken Ludwig, Mike Ockrent, Susan Stroman, and Paul Gemignani decided to revamp the title under the name Crazy For You. As a good-old-fashioned musical comedy, it was natural to keep its setting in the Depression era and give audiences a dose of the spectacle that the big British musicals of the 80s had nearly co-opted. But instead of a helicopter, a chandelier, a barricade, or a levitating tire being the main event, they decided to make dance the spectacle. They ditched most of the original plot and interpolated a plethora of other hits from the Gershwin catalogue, making a smash hit and earning a spot as one of the 20 longest-running musicals in Broadway history by the end of its run.
Ever since I arrived at Goodspeed, every season planning conversation starts with “Is this the year for Crazy For You?” Before I even knew I was going to direct our production, the first words out of my mouth were Kelli Barclay. I think it is safe to say that no choreographer has staged more show-stopping moments at the Opera House than Kelli. From shows like Anything Goes and Hello, Dolly! to “I Love A Piano” in last season’s White Christmas, no one creates a production number like Miss Tap-Ball-Change Barclay. Her imagination and creativity know no bounds and there is no one better to be crafting original choreography for this tap dance extravaganza.
We’ve assembled a cast that brings a fresh perspective and heart to what can easily become over-stylized, with some returning stars and a few first-timers who are sure to become new favorites.
At its heart, Crazy For You is a love letter to musicals—the power theatre has to bring people together and breathe life back into a community. As the design team and I created the world of the show, we agreed it was essential that we capture both the specificity and reality of the Depression and celebrate the great tradition of musicals. We took much inspiration from movie musicals—Broadway Melody of 1938 and 1940, Ziegfeld Follies, The Band Wagon, the film adaptation of Girl Crazy, even La La Land, to name a select few—and leaned into a color journey. New York is dominated by starker neutral tones, while Deadrock has a warmth and vibrancy to its entire palette. There are many Easter eggs throughout the production that pay tribute to the moments that made us all fall in love with musicals. I challenge you to see how many you can spot.
It does feel like the stars have aligned for the perfect time to do Crazy For You. At a moment when the world can feel heavy, this show reminds us why musical theatre endures. We all need some escapism. We all need a love letter to musical theatre. We all need Crazy For You at Goodspeed. And with this company of artists built specifically for our stage…I know I couldn’t ask for anything more in making my Opera House directorial debut. So put on your dancing shoes and watch your spirits climb!

Goodspeed Musicals’ mission is to share the joy of musical theatre; to delight, inspire, and challenge audiences; to nurture creators; and to build and support a broad, diverse, and inclusive community.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The land on which Goodspeed Musicals is located in East Haddam and Chester, CT is the ancestral land of at least three tribes of Native Americans—the Wangunk, the Mohegan and the Nehantic tribes. We understand that the land which is now Haddam and East Haddam was purchased from the native people in 1662 for thirty coats—worth about $100. We acknowledge those native Americans and the loss of their homeland—land on which we thrive today.
DEDICATED PERFORMANCES
Goodspeed Musicals is pleased to offer members and friends an extraordinary opporunity to support the finest musical theatre while providing a once-in-a-lifetime tribute to a friend or loved one. If you are interested in dedicating a performance to honor someone, please contact Rebekah Moses at 860-615-0365 or rmoses@goodspeed.org.
VOLUNTEER AT GOODSPEED
The Goodspeed Guild is a volunteer organization dedicated to supporting Goodspeed Musicals’ operations and productions. Since 1975 it has provided services to artists, patrons, and staff on a year-round basis, while offering its members the opportunity to become part of the behind-the scenes activities at Goodspeed. To find out about volunteer opportunities that fit your interests and schedule, visit our website at goodspeed.org or contact info@goodspeed.org.
