The legendary songs of Elvis Presley ignite a rockin’ romp set in the Fabulous ’50s. When a guitar-playing stranger on a motorcycle roars into a sleepy town, nothing will be the same. Boy meets girl and soon everybody can’t help falling in love. Mistaken identity, mismatched lovers and the magic of romance come together in a free-wheeling rock and roll comedy. Celebrate the 20th anniversary production of a show that began at Goodspeed with non-stop classics, from “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Hound Dog,” to “Love Me Tender” and “Don’t Be Cruel.”

David Shire and I have written two revues: Star ting Here, Star ting Now (1977, mostly songs of young love), followed by Closer Than Ever (1989, revived and revised in 2012, about more adult relationships). A comment we of ten heard was that if we were, hypothetically, to put the songs in chronological order, they’d pretty much tell the stor y of a life. This star ted us thinking that perhaps we should complete the “stor y of a life” with a third revue, exploring the third phase of life, the “golden years,” when look back and see their life’s full trajector y. About Time is the result, creating a trilogy of revues that we like to call Life: A Musical (Par ts I, II and III).
Like the earlier two revues, About Time is made up of songs that are based on reality, either experiences and perceptions we have had in our own lives, or, more commonly, stories that people have told us. Real life has always been our greatest source material. What people actually feel and actually experience is of ten so dif ferent from what they expect they will feel or experience, and following reality has of ten led us to stor y songs that explore circumstances and emotions that have not been explored in
DAVID SHIRE
songs before. Real life is truly an inventive stor yteller. Nothing come up with is ever equal to what reality invents.
And so, we of fer you Life: A Musical, Par t III: About Time, now having its premiere engagement at Goodspeed’s Terris Theatre from May 24 to June 15. One thing we have noticed, in comments we received as we tested About Time in several workshops, is that no two people seem to see the same show. There is something primal in these personal songs. The stories they tell are unique and of ten surprising, and yet people recognize themselves in them. Audience members seem to bring their own lives to About Time, and when they do, their lives become par t of the experience of attending it. The songs are touching
complexities we all know and recognize. As one cast member says late in the show: “Isn’t life just hilarious!”
David and I can’t wait to share About Time with you.
—Richard
Maltby, Jr. and David Shire

Goodspeed Musicals’ mission is to share the joy of musical theatre; to delight, inspire, and challenge audiences; to nur ture creators; and to build and suppor t a broad, diverse, and inclusive community.
The land on which Goodspeed Musicals is located in East Haddam and Chester, CT is the ancestral land of at least three tribes of Native Americans—the Wangunk, the Mohegan and the Nehantic tribes. We understand that the land which is now Haddam and East Haddam, was purchased from the native people in 1662 for thir ty coats—wor th about $100. We acknowledge those native Americans and the loss of their homeland—land on which we thrive today

Since its inception, Goodspeed Musicals has particularly benefited from the unique advantages of planned gifts and bequests. Because such gifts provide financial support over time, they have been essential to Goodspeed Musicals’ ability to consistently move from strength to strength, plan for the future with confidence, and ensure millions more will enjoy award-winning productions for generations to come.
Goodspeed Musicals thanks the members of the William H. Goodspeed Society who have included a future bequest to Goodspeed Musicals in their wills or estate plans.
