The music you’re hearing is being played live and projected into the theatre. Be sure to take a look on your way out after the show!

Audio/video recording and photography are strictly prohibited during the performance.

In his memory, friends and admirers established the James Kirkwood Literary Prize to honor new generations of fiction writers for their literary achievements.

NICHOLAS DANTE (Book) [1941–1991] was an American dancer and writer, best known for having co-written the book of the musical A Chorus Line Born Conrado Morales in New York City, Dante began his career as a dancer and performer, appearing on Broadway in Applause, Ambassador and Smith, among others. In 1974, Michael Bennett invited Dante to participate in interview sessions with Broadway dancers who, almost anonymously, serve as a backdrop behind star performers. Those sessions provided ample material for a Broadway musical. Collaborating with Bennett and James Kirkwood Jr., Dante created A Chorus Line, which earned him the 1976 Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Best Book of a Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The character of Paul, a gay Puerto Rican dancer whose early career consisted of working in a drag show, was based primarily on Dante. Sammy Williams, who originated the role, won the 1976 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. Dante later assumed the role himself. In 1991, at age 49, Dante died in New York City from AIDS-related complications.

MARVIN HAMLISCH (Music) [1944–2012] As composer, Marvin Hamlisch won virtually every major award that exists: three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony, three Golden Globe awards and the Pulitzer Prize (won by A Chorus Line). Only Hamlisch and Richard Rodgers have won a “PEGOT” (P.E.G.O.T. = Pulitzer, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony awards). For Broadway, Hamlisch wrote the music for his groundbreaking show A Chorus Line as well as They’re Playing Our Song, The Goodbye Girl and Sweet Smell of Success. Additional theatrical scores include Jean Seberg (1983) and The Nutty Professor (2012). He was the

composer of more than 40 motion picture scores, including his Oscar-winning score and song for The Way We Were and his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s music for The Sting, for which he received a third Oscar. His prolific output of scores for films include original compositions and/or musical adaptations for Sophie’s Choice, Ordinary People, The Swimmer, Three Men and a Baby, Ice Castles, Take the Money and Run, Bananas, Save the Tiger and The Informant!, starring Matt Damon and directed by Steven Soderbergh. At the time of his passing, he had just finished his last musical score for film, Liberace—Behind the Candelabra. It went on to win several Emmys. Hamlisch held the position of principal pops conductor for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony and Pops, Seattle Symphony, San Diego Symphony, The Buffalo Philharmonic and The National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. At the time of his death he was preparing to assume responsibilities as Principal Pops Conductor for The Philadelphia Orchestra. Hamlisch was a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music and Queens College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He believed in the power of music to bring people together.

EDWARD KLEBAN (Lyrics) [1939–1987] was the lyricist of A Chorus Line, for which he won the 1975 Tony Award, the Pulitzer Prize and the Drama Desk and Olivier Awards. His score for the musical A Class Act, produced posthumously, was nominated for the 2001 Tony and Drama Desk Awards and won an Obie Award. A Class Act is a musical biography of Kleban, with a score comprised of his own music and lyrics. Mr. Kleban was a graduate of the High School of Music and Art and of Columbia College, where he wrote the music for the Varsity Show of 1960 with a book by Terrance McNally. Upon graduation from Columbia, Kleban was hired as a record producer by Columbia Records. Throughout the sixties, he produced original cast albums while developing his own musicals in Lehman Engel’s BMI Musical Theatre Workshop. Every song that he wrote for A Chorus Line was tested in the BMI Workshop. During the 1980s he carried on Mr. Engel’s tradition and taught songwriting in the workshop. Mr. Kleban died in December 1987 at the age of 48, after a two-year bout with a cigarette-related cancer. In his will, he created and endowed The Kleban Prize, a unique grant that is bestowed not for a writer’s previous achievements, but for the promise of creativity to come, chosen by a panel of Broadway’s most respected artists. Recipients have gone on to garner 4 Tony Awards, 30 Tony nominations, 10 Drama Desk Awards and 4 Obies.

PROGRAM NOTES BY MICHAEL FLING | ASSOCIATE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

The story of how A Chorus Line came to be is one of the most famous creation stories in the history of musical theatre. Though, depending on who you ask, you get a different version of events… ironic for a show that is all about people telling their stories!

Broadway was in a precarious place in the early 1970s. Having firmly exited the ‘Golden Age of Musicals’ during a turbulent time in the nation, musicals hadn’t quite found their footing in this new era. Amidst this turmoil, Michael Bennett, a prominent director and choreographer, gathered a group of dancers late on a Saturday night. They talked about their lives as dancers in New York, hoping to create a show that would put dancers center stage. Armed with a reel-to-reel tape machine, the assembled performers talked well into Sunday morning sharing stories from their childhoods, experiences auditioning for shows, and their fears and anxieties about their future in the business.

It’s a subtle and brilliant framework that subconsciously puts the audience at ease. While seemingly narrative-less, it relies on the most universal of stories: the life cycle. It underscores the message that these performers have dedicated their entire lives to their art—mirroring that they are baring their souls to us through their stories.

While everyone involved in the tape sessions knew they had been a part of a special evening, Bennett knew then and there that it could be shared beyond just the small group. After bringing together a writing team, Bennett and the dancers pioneered ‘workshopping’ a show— which has now become the standard method of developing a new musical. With a wealth of material from the tape sessions to draw on, the challenge became how to transform the personal stories into an engaging stage production without a plot or source material to guide the process.

As a former Goodspeed staff member and one of my best friends Anika Chapin always says, while A Chorus Line doesn’t have a plot, it does have what she calls a ‘superstructure’, which gives a thematic shape to the proceedings. (You can hear me and Anika nerd out about musicals in our brilliant musical theatre podcast Know the Show—available wherever you listen to podcasts!) Beyond just telling the story of this very unique audition, the way we move through the stories of the dancers is literally from birth/ childhood (“I Can Do That” & “At the Ballet”) all the way to death. The prompt for “What I Did For Love” is “But if today were the day you had to stop dancing, how would you feel?” And after the song, Zach casts his ensemble.

A lot of people say that this illustration of a collective devotion to dancing makes the show a love letter to performing. It is often directed and remounted as such, in my opinion, to the detriment of Bennett’s original vision for the piece. When the cast re-enters for the iconic finale performance of “One,” they are indistinguishable from each other in their gold outfits and hats. After spending nearly two hours getting to know them as individuals, they become, well…one. Their ability to not stand out, gets them the job. The opposite of almost every classic backstage musical. In many ways, it’s a condemnation of show business—that we relegate these phenomenal talents to the background. In most shows, they support the main character’s story…but in A Chorus Line they get to tell their story to the world. They get to be the main attraction.

It’s no wonder that the show resonated with the public in a way that other show business stories didn’t. Don’t believe me? Believe my mom who is an accountant—it’s her favorite show. In her college years, she stood and watched the original production multiple times when she lived in New York. When I was growing up, I asked her why she liked it so much. She replied, “Because normal people don’t want to be the star. I work hard every day, and put myself on the line, and no one knows how hard it is. I know what it is like to fight just to be anonymous. Just like them.”

As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of this landmark piece of musical theatre with this production, I hope that the work of our incredible company of actors and creative team resonates with audiences as it did when it first premiered, and that we have reconnected the show with its roots and Bennett’s original intention to celebrate the individuality of the seventeen singular sensations who stand on the line.

VOLUNTEER AT GOODSPEED

The Goodspeed Guild is a volunteer organization dedicated to supporting Goodspeed Musicals’ operations and productions. Since 1975 it has provided services to artists, patrons, and staff on a year-round basis, while offering its members the opportunity to become part of the behind-the scenes activities at Goodspeed. To find out about volunteer opportunities that fit your interests and schedule, visit our website at goodspeed.org or contact goodspeedguild@goodspeed.org.

DEDICATE A PERFORMANCE

Goodspeed Musicals is pleased to offer members and friends an extraordinary opporunity to support the finest musical theatre while providing a once-in-a-lifetime tribute to a friend or loved one. If you are interested in dedicating a performance to honor someone, please contact Sophia Voglino at 860-615-0389 or svoglino@goodspeed.org.

GOODSPEED’S MISSION STATEMENT

Goodspeed Musicals’ mission is to share the joy of musical theatre; to delight, inspire, and challenge audiences; to nurture creators; and to build and support a broad, diverse, and inclusive community.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The land on which Goodspeed Musicals is located in East Haddam and Chester, CT is the ancestral land of at least three tribes of Native Americans—the Wangunk, the Mohegan and the Nehantic tribes. We understand that the land which is now Haddam and East Haddam was purchased from the native people in 1662 for thirty coats—worth about $100. We acknowledge those Native Americans and the loss of their homeland—land on which we thrive today.
