Once again that time of year is upon us. The time of the year where the fashion is as hot as the weather…. SUMMER! What is there not to love about the summer? Hot days even hotter nights, more skin, tropical weather and drinks. The summer is for everything hot and sexy, light and less, sun and surf. The summer is coming out in full force and we at The GOODS Magazine are all over what’s going on this summer season. There is a lot going on in this issue of The GOOD Magazine. We have taken the best of summer and broke them down for you. Starting with sexy summer hair, this issue has what you need to achieve this summer’s sophisticated look that everybody wants. We also know how important it is to keep those locks looking their best with hair care tips. Spring is upon us... by Deprise Brazel

Spring is upon us, and summer is just around that sunny corner. This only means one thing: time to get that perfect swimsuit. As we saw last year, sexy one-pieces came back into style, but 2012 brings the perfected model. Usually around this time I like to go to the boutiques with the most unique bathing suits. No one wants to have the same Victoria’s Secret bathing suit as the chick posted up on the towel next to you. For this piece, however, I searched for one-of-a-kind suits from Nasty Gal, Urban Outfitters, and Anthropologie and found some stylish, yet practical swimsuits for the impending summer season we all wish for during the other nine months of the year. The first items are crochet one-pieces from Nasty Gal; the first by Lisa Maree and the other by Undrest. These distinct suits look comfortable and flattering, and practically guarantee compliments. One is more pricey than the other, but I can assure you, if you’re looking for just one suit this season, this is the one to get for the Southern California sand runway. Cutout Crochet swimsuit by Lisa Maree $138.00

The next two one-pieces are from the LA-based brand Wildfox Couture. They are known for crop-tops with blunt phrases and sweet cutouts; Wildfox just recently began their swim line last year. This season, they feature high-in-front, low-in-back one-pieces with iconic graphic prints.

The last three are all bikinis from Anthropologie. Once again, not a store known for a swim line. But one thing they are known for; attention to detail. The first is by Basta Surf and comes in grape (as shown), mint, and black. It allows for the water to toss you around a little bit, without unwanted exposure, but also provide some style - notice the back detail. The second is by Amore & Sorvete. It’s more of a feminine, frilly suit, especially compared to the Wildfox suits. The bottoms may be pushing it, but the top has a certain elegant factor. And did you notice? No halter! Time to take a break from the neck-ache we all are familiar with from tying back our other tops. Finally, the last suit is by Mara Hoffman and perfectly designed. Neon is in for the spring and it looks like it’ll stay for the summer. This suit will provide support, comfort, and security; if only it came with a handsome hunk. And keeping with the essence of Anthropologie, it’s all about the (back) detail.

Styling Tips for Straight or Curly Hair by Christine DiMaria

The difference between curly and straight hair isn’t just a texture issue. It affects the way you wash and style your hair as well, since one mistake can cause those beautiful tendrils to morph into a poofy disaster. On the contrary, one wrong move on your sleek and straight hair may lead to a dry do. Choosing a Shampoo Before you can even begin to think about the actual styling process, you need a clean slate to work with. If you have curly hair, opt for a moisturizing shampoo to give you a hydrated and healthy set of locks. When you have hair that’s more kinky than curly, you’ll want to select a protein-based shampoo. But, make sure that you’re reading the ingredients because protein needs to be the first ingredient listed. Also, make sure you read what’s listed as the second ingredient, due to the fact that it should be something that will help moisturize or assist with the actual growing process. Carotene is a wonderful second active ingredient. It aids in the growth process of hair by renewing hair cells. Shea butter also works well as a second active ingredient, because it helps to moisturize.

10 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

Try Waves Waves are sexy and easy to obtain, if you have naturally wavy hair or straight hair. All you need for this look is some texture balm and spray gel. Apply the texture balm throughout your tresses, then put your head down and flip your hair forward. Begin scrunching your hair and spraying a little spray gel on it for the finishing touch.

Playing with Your Part A side part can work for both curly or straight hair. All you have to do is part your hair on either side rather than in the center. Once you do, add a decorative clip to achieve a cute hairstyle that looks fabulous without much fuss. Use Styling Gel Styling gel applied from the roots of your hair to the tips of your hair will help prevent fly-aways. This also assists you with preventing noticeable split ends.

11 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

Braids and Buns Braids and buns make excellent hairstyles for people with straight hair. The sleek appearance of a low, side bun gives you a sophisticated look without taking a ton of time. Braiding your hair can give you any type of look you want from fun and flirty to sophisticated and chic.

How to Break Bad Eating Habits By Christine DiMaria

While you’re probably already aware that you should avoid eating a glazed, sugary-sprinkle covered donut along with a whole-milk cappuccino with extra whipped cream for breakfast every morning, but did you know that might not be the worst habit you have? In fact, many eating habits that you have might not be nearly as healthy as you think they are. Stop the Midnight Snacking Snacking before bed or even having a midnight snack is quite unhealthy. It might be a routine that you’ve had since you were a child, but you must break that habit. Although a snack before bed might not harm you nearly as much when you were younger, as you age your metabolism slows down, which means those calories are not going to be burnt off while you sleep. This results in your body storing the energy as glucose and ultimately as fat. If you can’t resist munching before bed, try foods that are high in fiber and low in calories, such as celery. Eat a Healthy Breakfast While you may have heard that a great deal of calories are consumed at breakfast time, this is actually a good thing. So rather cutting out breakfast to reduce calories, you should consume a breakfast loaded with protein, “good carbs” and fruit, in order to provide your body with the energy it needs throughout the day. Cutting calories through skipping breakfast contributes to increased weight gain.

Don’t Just Cut Out Fat, Cut Out Unhealthy Carbs Low-fat diets are not nearly as successful as lowcarb diets. Therefore, you need to reduce the amount of fattening foods you eat, as well as the unhealthy carbs, such as refined sugars. Opt for nutritious carbs like whole-grain pasta and healthy fibers including carrots and celery. Don’t avoid fats all together, since they’re needed as part of your diet, but make sure you avoid unhealthy fats like french fries and processed foods.

31 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

Eat Your Biggest Meal for Lunch Eating five smaller meals is recommended to keep your metabolism stimulated, which results in you have energy when you need it, without contributing negatively to your body weight. Ultimately, your largest meal shouldn’t be for dinner like many people believe. In fact, your largest meal should be your lunch.

Summer Beauty Wear By: Kristina-Monique

Pool Side Beauty

44 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

Trying to rock a beautiful face while lounging poolside? Instead of the usual full face, wear minimal this year in the sun to get noticed. Start off by applying a tinted moisturizer, it is beneficial and will give you a beautiful dewy complexion. One of my faves is Kiehl’s tinted moisturizer, which contains SPF 15 so you get protection from those harmful UV rays. Groomed eyebrows are always a key for the summer and to top it off put a nice pop of color on the lip. A great lip product that has an SPF is Cover Girl’s Baby Lips, which I’ll be using poolside. Baby Lips is not only moisturizing but comes in a variety of colors as well and for those who like a little more punch on the lip try a long lasting lipstick made by Chanel, just remember your SPF first. So don’t forget this summer’s Pool Side Beauty tip- never underestimate the value of some UV protection in your moisturizer and lip-gloss this summer while safely soaking up those rays. Your favorite drink and cutest bikini never hurt either!

Makeup Lovers Alright Makeup Lovers!!!! We all know summer can bring heat and we begin to feel as though even our clothes are too heavy for the weather. With that said, nobody wants to really wear a full face of makeup so here are some of the trending summertime looks, while hanging out at your backyard boogies. Let’s start with a base that gives you both flawless coverage and SPF: tinted moisturizers. These are AMAZING during summertime (why?). For a matte finish, simply apply a light dust of powder. To finalize your beautifully structured face, top it off with a bronzer. A bronzer does not necessarily mean darker powder that has a shimmer but they are also matte which allows a golden sun kissed appearance. Nicely groomed brows with a bit of structure and a nice pop of gold on the lid paired with a set of lashes are a couple more ways enhance the overall eye look. Waterproof mascara is another great addition to your makeup bag, who doesn’t want long lasting eye lash action without those embarrassing raccoon eyes after a splash in the pool. Complete your look with a rich lip with something that’s new and fresh like a crimson, rich red, bright orange or maybe the opposite way with a nude. Most importantly, use sunscreen daily to protect your skin from future sun damage.

45 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

As always love to give you all a little tip, wear a matte color while hanging out by the beach so that the wind doesn’t blow any unwanted sand on your lips that will get noticed.

The Sport Jacket By Natalia Dominquez

The sport jacket is a handsome accessory for a man. It’s a garment that is respected and can go anywhere. It is also an exceptionally remarkable versatile garment. There is no such thing as being too old or too young to pull off the sport jacket. Any man wearing a sport jacket will be guaranteed to look sharp as well as handsome anywhere he goes. It is easier to dress the sport jacket down. It’s more casual and should fit on the body a bit looser. There have been debates on sport jacket’s fitting loose but I think that you should always have more room underneath, just in case you want to layer. The fit on the jacket is different for everyone so whether you want it tight or loose, it’s all up to you. Find a jacket that suits your build and find something that you’ll feel comfortable in. Let’s discuss some great reasons to own a sport jacket. A sports jacket is best paired with a nice dress shirt. Keep in mind, that just like a suit, you want to make sure that 1/2 of the cuffs are showing and half an inch of your collar is showing above the jackets collar. Slipping a sport jacket over a dress shirt can instantly change the way strangers perceive you. It’s great for first impressions and adds just the right amount of professionalism in an environment where a suit can be overkill. The sport jacket can also work with t-shirts (if you choose wisely). I dislike graphic t-shirts so if you cannot or don’t know how to do that style then stay away. Please.
Women own purses that can hold all of their belongings. But, what about men? The advantage of the sport jacket for is that the pockets are large enough to hold your wallet, phone, pens, papers, loose money, just like a woman’s purse. The most important part in making the outfit are your bottoms. Make sure to stay away from matching your pants to your blazer because it might look like a bad suit. Grey flannel or cotton bottoms in khaki, tan, or brown are a natural pair with a patterned sports jacket. Last but not least, let’s talk about shoes. The great thing here, is that your choice in footwear is as wide as the combinations in clothes that you can put together. Leather loafers work well as well as oxfords. And or my favorite, Sperry’s.

So remember, there are many ways to wear a sport jacket, so go out and find one that suits you!

COCKTAILS: SIPPIN PROPER THIS SUMMER by Mariah Honey

48 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

Some people feel like any cocktail will do as they sit by the pool, but surely they don’t realize that when you’re grilling, or feasting on crawfish, or kicking back on the sand, some combinations of ingredients do quench the thirst better than others.

First, consider fruit. There’s a reason why Gatorade and lemonade are popular in the summer months. They rely on the sweet-and-tart balance that only lemon/lime—and sugar—can provide. This is the formula for a sour drink as well. The favorites like the Margarita and Strawberry Daiquiri are amongst this group. Another favorite, the Cosmopolitan, which is a cranberry fused cocktail, is also a part of this group. If you are unable to decide what fruit to use, try adding whatever your personal favorite is to drinks like a Pimm’s Cup, which is mixed with ginger ale and given a piece of a cool cucumber to set it right.

A little bit of bubbly is proper for any occasion, including lounging poolside. Bubbles are another well-known refresher: Add Champagne and a bit of gin to sour mixture and you’ve got a French 75. Pour a glass of beer along with hot sauce, and you have made a Michelada. Of course any minty drink is an automatic refresher; the popularity of rum Mojitos and bourbon Mint Juleps, show just that.

Try different drinks to help you beat the heat, until you find your perfect summer cocktail. There’s something for everyone: bitter, sweet, salty, sour, up, on the rocks, shaken, stirred, even bubblegum-infused. So Cabana Boy, another round of drinks please!

Don’t you forget about the dark delights, either. Bartenders are getting calls for many of the “classics” such as an Old Fashioned and the Manhattan.

Christina Samoylov Designer Vault By Christine DiMaria

Designer Vault is an ecommerce boutique that is ran by Christina Samoylov. Christina hand selects all merchandise for her business. She focuses on the latest trends, but not all of her products are new, so her pre-owned products are screened very carefully, so everything she sells is high quality. The goal of her business is to offer a wide selection of products to fashionistas everywhere. She wants these products to be authentic and luxury without the expensive exclusive price. Business has always been in Christina’s blood. Starting when she was in the first grade, she began selling items right from her own school desk. This concept continued to grow and blossom into her current business of selling handbags, accessories and authentic goods. Once she reached junior high, Ms. Samoylov discovered the process of selling on Ebay. Even though Christina didn’t have a true passion for fashion, she did, however, have a background in retail, which led her to attending college at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) for buying, planning and allocating. Fashion and numbers are her two strongest points, so she wanted to combined these two aspects into her career. Although she couldn’t seem to find any jobs in her field that didn’t stop this determined fashion diva. Six months later, this fierce fashionista started her own business with inspiration being pulled from the lack of “one-stop shops” in her area. Thus, Samoylov created her own one-stop shop for fashion. Not to mention, Christina always wanted to grow up and call something her own.

58 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

The items Christina has on stock are from consigners, and she keeps her target audience of women between the ages of 24 and 36 in mind every time she searches for new goods. Although Designer Vault is geared toward women now, that doesn’t mean that she won’t sell men’s apparel in the future.

May 8th was the official kick-off date for her site. We had the opportunity to look around before this date, and we definitely like what we see. She even has an area for her site where you must request an invite. Her reasoning.. she wanted her site to be exclusive, and something to differentiate her from the competitors. She describes this feature as “a breath of fresh air for the consignment industry. It also keeps privacy intact for her high-end merchandise, and it makes members feel like they are getting something special. She might only be 23, but her business is quite impressive, 60K in sales last year and this number jumped to 1 million in sales this year. At such a young age having that much success is amazing, but Christina notes her age as a downfall. She cites her young age as an obstacle in the hiring process, since her colleagues and employees do not take her seriously because of her age. The ideal future of Designer Vault is to move in a direction where the store offers the option to get merchandise authenticated. Christina also wants the store to include shopping services and designer services. As for Christina, she wants to keep her business growing, which means hiring more employees. She worked in retail, so she wants to offer great opportunities. She even wants to allow her employees to have weekends and holidays off, because she knows how difficult it can be working during those times from her own experience.

59 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

Christina also has some words of wisdom for those who are looking to start their own business. She informed us that you must be passionate and stay focused. Additionally, she stated that a good idea can go as far as you want it to. Therefore, you must believe in yourself, and then everyone else will, too.

10 Important Clothing Items Every Man Should Own in Their Closet By Natalia Dominguez

As a boy, it is important that you take the steps in becoming a man. Aside from paying your bills and all the responsibilities that come with it, it is also important to keep a manly image. You’re growing up and need to clean up your act. Congratulations on being responsible! Unfortunately, that’s the second thing a girl will find out about you. The first impression that you give a woman is your appearance. I know, it may seem shallow that some women may check your appearance before anything, but that’s just how it is. I’m going to give you a list of the things that should be in your closet, especially if you plan on upgrading your wardrobe and don’t know where to start. 1. A Suit (black or navy) Maybe you’re not the guy that has an office job and needs to wear a suit to work everyday, but doesn’t matter! SOMEDAY you’ll meet the love of your life and she’ll take you to meet the parents and there is no better way to make a good first impression than in a suit. Also, if you decide to invest in a suit, make sure it’s well tailored to fit you. Spend a good amount on a suit that will last. Trust me, it will be a great investment. If you do, you’ll be sure to be set for any special occasion; weddings, parties, job meetings, fancy dinners etc.

60 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

2. Black Shoes Like a suit, black shoes are an important item to own in your closet. I recommend that before you get brown dress shoes you get black. You’ll find that they match better with everything and are very versatile. They can be worn with suits, jeans and even khakis. 3. Belt A belt is very important! Guys, the last thing anyone wants to see want is your pants below your butt. UNATTRACTIVE! You also want to make sure that your outfit flows. If you’re going to wear a belt with your suit (which you should be) make sure that it matches with your shoes or at least blends with your wardrobe.

4. White Dress Shirt A white dress shirt is excellent for any occasion! White dress shirts look good on just about anybody! They look sharp and are very versatile. One tip: MAKE SURE THAT IT”S CLEAN! 5. Solid Tie Solid ties are easy and versatile. If solid isn’t your thing, try a classic diagonal stripe. Having several tie patterns will ensure that you are prepared for interviews, weddings and evening events. 6. Navy Blue or Black Blazer A blazer is great all year round and easily coordinates with khakis and other items! If a regular blazer bores you, then try a tweed sport coat but also keep in mind that tweed is useful and only “in” in the fall and the winter. Either way, whether it’s tweed, cotton, silk, a blazer can hold a look together and can be dressed up or dressed down. 7. Khakis and Jeans No explanation necessary here. Jeans are a staple of the American wardrobe. Same goes for khakis. Get darker jeans for going out. They look much sexier. Save your lighter jeans for the day. 8. Overcoat An overcoat doesn’t necessarily mean a long coat. It also means 3/4-length or car coat length. This item really finishes an outfit and can be worn with everything including jeans. And everyone needs a coat in the winter, right? Well, maybe not in places like Phoenix or San Diego.

10. Casual Shirt A casual shirt such as a polo or button down is a must have to wear with jeans or other casual pants. So there you have it guys! Keep and eye out for these clothing items, because you’ll need them.

9. Athletic Wear This doesn’t mean that you can wear your athletic outfits everywhere you go! So don’t, please. You know what they’re used for. The last thing you want to do is hug the girl that you like and smell like you haven’t showered for days. Athletic wear is used for working out or lazy Sundays, not everyday wear.

The Little Black Dress By Natalia Dominquez

The little black dress has been a symbol of being chic and sophisticated in the most simple way. Wearing a little black dress can make a woman look effortlessly dressed in a classic style. I just want to point out that if you are a woman, and you don’t own a black dress, then consider your wardrobe I N C O M P L E T E. A black dress is a very versatile piece of garment. Whether you are going out for drinks with your girls, going on a dinner date, maybe a wedding, whatever the occasion may be, a “little black dress” is surely to come to the rescue for any wardrobe dilemma. Poor, rich, middle-class; doesn’t matter, a black dress is not only affordable, but it is also versatile and it is guaranteed to last you a long time. When shopping for a black dress, you want to make sure to find a beautiful dress that can easily be dressed up or down. If you plan on wearing a black dress for work, adding a simple accessory such as a blazer will make the dress look more sophisticated and business-like. If you want to wear that same black dress for a party, simply taking the blazer off, adding some tall heels, changing the hair and throwing on some deep red lipstick will give your dress a more party vibe style. I am a stylish girl so I could care less about what “looks good” on me, but I have learned that the shorter and tighter dresses make me look taller and show off my petite curves. Women come in different shapes and sizes so of course we all can’t fit into the same style dress. Regardless, whether you are curvy, short, or petite there is a dress that has been made to fit your type. It is very important though that you take the time to learn the shape of your body and learn what fits you best. I think it’s silly when my girlfriend’s want to go out and say “but I have nothing to wear,” of course we all know that that’s not true. We ALL have SOMETHING to wear. This is where that ‘Little Black Dress’ should come in very handy. Again, it’s simple as throwing a different jacket on and or changing up the shoes that will change the vibe of the dress. If you want to make a statement, as little as adding a piece of jewelry will go a long way. So remember these keep points when looking for a dress:

72 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

-Something that fits your shape and style. -A versatile dress that you can wear to just about any occasion. -A dress made out of a good material that will last you. -And of course, an affordable dress. Piece of advice: The most important tool is your mind. An outfit can only help you physically. Remember that no matter who you are or what you wear, you are beautiful. But please, go out and get yourself a black dress!

Snooki: A Surprise in a Pint Sized Package by Kimberly Kimmel

92 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

One thing Snooki (aka Nicole Elizabeth Polizzi) never fails at is surprising the public. From her popularity on Jersey Shore, to writing three books, and to the release of her latest fashion accessory line- the pint-size, pickle eating girl from New York surprises everyone with her success and determination in nearly all of her endeavors. Polizzi became a star in 2009 with her debut on the popular reality television series, Jersey Shore. For the last five seasons, she has been an asset in making the hit show a staple in must-watch television programming, and is now in fact, one of the highest paid reality stars in the business with and estimated net worth of $4 Million Dollars. Snooki has appeared on numerous talk shows and has ventured into the book world. A Shore Thing, released in January 2011, did poor in sales, but that didn’t stop her. She continued on to write a second book, called Confessions of a Guidette, which was published in October 2011. And her third novel, Gorilla Beach will be out later this month. In 2011 Polizzi signed a contract with her Jersey Shore costar Jennifer Farley to appear in a spin-off show called Snooki and JWoww vs. The World. The show will premiere on MTV later this year and will follow Polizzi and JWoww moving in together and the debauchery that surely ensued. She also appears as herself in the recently released film The Three Stooges.

But not everything Polizzi touches turns to gold. We can all remember the tape that was shown ad nauseum of her falling off her bike drunk and her subsequent arrest for disorderly conduct in Seaside Heights, New Jersey back in July of 2010. She wound up with a $500 fine and community service and worse-- called “a Lindsay Lohan wannabe” by the judge. Snooki was later arrested the following year in 2011, in Florence, Italy after the car she was driving collided with a parked police car. Then, later last year she was sued by a licensing company for breach of contract for allegedly negotiating other deals behind their back. Her fashion sense is certainly a force to be reckoned with. From her short stature in sky high heels, to her hair poof, and love of animal prints, Snooki does stays true to her motto of ‘living life with no shame’ as she is brave and even brazen in her fashion statements.. She has turned her fashion sense into a strong business sense. Snooki has a new line of sunglasses Rock Candy that reported sold out this past January only one day after she posted a sneak peak of the collection via her twitter account. Snookie also has a signature fragrance, a boot line, leopard print totes as well as a stuffed animal she has named Crocodilly; according to recent figures circulating the web, all are selling very well.

93 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

With the recent announcement of Snooki’s pregnancy and engagement to boyfriend, Jionni LaValle, audiences also learned that the guidette would not be a part of the Jersey Shore season being taped this summer. This is quite the disappointment for all of us dedicated viewers, but we cannot wait to see what Snooki does next in fashion. Sunglasses for tots and animal print booties, anyone?

TO WEAVE OR NOT TO WEAVE- THAT IS THE QUESTION by Mariah Honey

At the root of every bad hair day is a desire to achieve the highest level of hair loveliness possible...and the subsequent failure to meet those expectations. We always want what we cannot have, so we set ourselves up for disappointment when our strands do not live up to our high hair hopes. We all fall prey to mane envy, and with that comes the desire to enhance — whether it be through straightening, coloring, cutting, or more evidently- adding extensions. What’s your stance on women who wear fake hair? “I think it’s a personal decision. The one thing I do like about it is that it gives women options. With hair extensions, women are no longer confined to one particular hairstyle and can try different things before making a permanent change. I do believe that women should love themselves as they are, but I don’t have a problem with a weave. Hair extensions can be viewed as an enhancement similar to fake eyelashes or other beauty enhancers. I’m not a fan of unkempt extensions! But besides that, the only thing I don’t particularly care for is that due to their popularity, some people automatically assume that everyone is wearing extensions.” Why do you think there is such a huge split between women who wear fake hair and those who choose to go natural? “Honestly, I see more of a divide between those who are natural (without a relaxer) and those are not. I also see a divide between those who choose to wear their hair in its natural state without straightening and those who do not.

94 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

The sensitivity comes because for some reason, in some situations, it’s taboo to wear a weave. It really shouldn’t be an issue or a sensitive topic. You will have the slightly awkward, ‘oh is that your real hair?’ questions, but if they’re not asked rudely, this just encourages dialogue on the topic, sometimes even between different races. I really appreciate when women just ask outright, ‘is that your hair?’ And I do the same. I’m from what I consider to be one of the black hair capitals of the U.S. (New Orleans) and I love talking about hair. Afterall, this is ‘track city”. And who knows, the woman may be asking because she likes your hair and wants to follow up with a ‘where did you get it done? or ‘what products do you use?’ or simply ‘it looks good girl, I like it.’” There’s been an interesting debate brewing recently over what “natural” hair actually is and whether hair enhancements like wigs, weaves, and extensions play a misleading role in how we define beauty these days. Is wearing your hair natural “better” than wearing extensions? What exactly gets everyone so riled up when a woman chooses to wear fake hair? What are your thoughts on a lil whip-action?

He Said.. She Said.. By Kristle McCullough

Amy and Lisa have been the best of friends for 15 years, so when Lisa came to Amy with information that she’d heard her husband Gary had been seen at the casino by a mutual friend, Amy was infuriated. Not because Lisa had told her but because she and Gary had an agreement that he would stop gambling, an activity that had become an issue for the couple. Amy immediately storms off to confront Gary, an interaction that leads to a huge blow out wherein Gary feels robbed of his voice. We’ve all heard of scenarios such as this, you confide in a close friend about your relationship challenges and at some point they are privy to information that coincides with your relationship issues. Most times, good friends feel obligated to report back to you even the most minute detail that someone else may have mentioned about your partner. Sometimes it’s noticing what could be construed as or is blatantly inappropriate behavior with a person of the opposite sex or like in the scenario with Gary witnessing or hearing something that your friend’s partner has done that breaks a relationship contingency. We have some tips for those who are in relationships to deal with the disclosure of information concerning your relationship by your friends.

I need to talk, will you listen? Everyone has a gripe or two about their significant other, however, never vent about your partner in fresh anger. Allow yourself time to think through the situation solo. If you must, Once you have calmed down and have had that time to form your own position you can confide in a confidant. It is best to premise the conversation with a request that they simply listen and try their best to not pass judgment on the situation. Often times our confidants will hold grudges against our significant others because unlike us, they are not in love with them and hate to see you in distress. But when you and your partner work things out, which leaves them with the same negativity they felt as your champion. He said, she said. You should never run back and forth between your partner and your friends. This creates tension for both relationships. Ultimately, most friends will side with you and if you disclose their opinions to your partner you’re bound to create bad blood between the two. Be quick to listen. Never accuse your significant other based on hearsay. If you didn’t see the accusation with your own eyes and are insistent upon having a healthy relationship, it is best to bring forth any information to your partner without having already forming a position and on the attack. Be ready to hear them out.

107 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

We hope that these few suggestions will help you manage the relationships that your friends and partners are forced into because of their mutual love for you. Remember, they didn’t choose each other, they chose you and it can be hard to maintain good cheer when the inevitable rocky times hit. It is up to you to set the tone. Happy interactions!

Hair Care Basics by Christine DiMaria

Hair Care Basics You don't just want your hair to be shiny and look nice, you want it to be healthy as well, especially since the concepts go hand-in-hand. So what do you need to know about your tresses? We have the answers right here!

108 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

Hair Washing 101 When you were a child, it was probably a rule in your home that you bathe everyday, which included washing your hair. I know in my house it was. However, in all reality I was doing more damage than good, and so are you if you still wash your hair daily. Washing your hair daily actually strips your hair of the natural oils that are needed to give your hair a healthy shine. Unless you have a very oily scalp, you should only wash your hair every other day, and use a dry shampoo in between.

Taming your Mane The safest brush to choose is a flat, paddle hairbrush because it works with any type of hair. And, make sure that the brush has small plastic balls at the end of each bristle, in order to prevent the bristles from tearing up your hair. Always use a pick on curly hair to remove the knots and give your hair body without destroying it.

Choosing a Shampoo What you wash your hair with is just as important as how you style your hair. Firstly, you must decide on what kind of hair you have. For instance, is it dry, oily or normal? The answer to this question will state a lot about what shampoo to select, since there are special shampoos for both dry and oily hair. Choose shampoo especially designed for color-treated or permed hair, if you colored, bleached or permed your hair.

To Condition or Not to Condition

109 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

If you have really oily hair, you may opt to condition your hair less; however, if you have dry hair or even normal hair, you should condition after every hair wash. This is because shampoos remove the natural oils from your hair. Also, if you have bleached hair, you dye your hair often or you use heated styling devices frequently, you may want to opt for a deep-conditioning treatment, instead of a regular conditioner.

Artist Spotlight

Hip-Hop Artist X.O. By Solomon

116 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

Standing at a height of 6’6’’ and rapping out of San Diego, California, 23-year-old hip-hop artist Xavier Osayande, better known as “X.O.”, is making waves throughout Southern California as a talented lyricist and “Who’s Next” caliber MC. This young, up and comer is looking to transition from buzzworthy artist to household name by continuing to sharpen his craft as a musician and preparing for the moment when his talent meets the right opportunity. In the meantime, X.O. is continuing to further his growth as an artist by consistently performing throughout Southern California and spending countless hours in the recording studio creating new material that exemplifies his trademark witty lyrical content and laid-back style. X.O.’s latest project Check Please Vol. 3 (CPV3), is a 14 track mixtape littered with enough themes and wit to satisfy a hip-hop music enthusiast’s appetite while providing a rare breath of fresh air in the urban music community by utilizing an element that most hip-hop/rap genre music lacks, originality. CPV3 is a mixtape with the content and production quality of a studio album with hits like Get Live, My Thang, Beam Me Up, Orange Soda and B.O.I. From opening to final track, X.O. proves to have discovered new creative horizons. X.O. and his strong supporting cast of features and collaborations give CPV3 a new sound that distinguishes it from most of its contemporaries. The list of rap and production collaborations include fellow Rockstar Muzik running mate Kidd Upstairs, Jimmy Javier, I-ROCC, Rappin’ Mo, K-Phi and Forever Fresh.

X.O.’s ability to create refreshingly original, quality hip-hop music may only be eclipsed by his evolution as an entertainer, as a maxed out capacity crowd could attest to this past April 19th at the Check Please Vol. 3 Album Release Party hosted by clothing company Dienasty Select and popular music blog Thissongslaps. The event took place downtown in the heart of San Diego’s Gaslamp District at nightclub f6ix where the 23-year-old musician along with the help of other local artists and label mates, put on an electrifying 4 hour show. The capacity crowd at f6ix was treated to an assortment of talented artists which included opening artists Jayoh Jr., Nicky B, Cheeba Hawk and Sincere, who kept the crowd primed and the stage warm with the help of DJ’s Skinnie and Decon before headlining artist X.O. took the stage with MC/ Producer Kidd Upstairs, keeping the crowd’s pulse pumping by performing a 30 minute set which included 9 condensed, unreleased tracks.

With a fanbase that is catching on like wild fire and a steadily growing social media presence, this gifted, young artist has set his sights on making his presence known throughout the music world. X.O. is utilizing the help of his sponsors, clothing companies Boom Tho and Dienasty Select, and his affiliation with Rockstar Muzik, a budding label that features himself and another very talented and young hip-hop artist and producer Kidd Upstairs, to help his talent and popularity reach new heights. More X.O.

To be honest I started writing in high school about age 14, it sounds corny but I used to write poetry for girls (laughs). On road trips to away games during basketball season, I would just put my headphones on and start writing down random rhymes and from then I began to develop my craft. I have an older brother and three older sisters who are much older than me, so while most kids were growing up watching Barney and collecting toys, I was reciting Warren G lyrics, and figuring out what “SWV” stood for.

117 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

How did you get your start in music?

What motivates you as an artist? Personally for me, just life experiences and the tribulations that myself or people I know encounter. My parents immigrated to America in the 70’s from Nigeria with no handouts, simply a vision and drive. I figured if they can put five kids through college and maintain a steady household then sky is the limit. Their work ethic and the constant pursuit of perfection courses through my veins. Motivation is something that comes within, either you have it or you don’t, and I do. Who are your biggest musical influences?

118 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

Growing up on the West Coast all my life has a lot to do with my influences. Off top I would say 2pac, Dr. Dre, Snoop, Warren G, Kurupt, Nate Dogg. The list goes on, Bone Thugs n Harmony, Notorious B.I.G., Eminem’s Slim Shady LP, Ghetto Fabolous by Fabolous, The College Drop Out by Kanye, Jay-Z and the Game were all early influences. Compare your style to another rapper, or cant you? Ummm because of my deep ass voice and my content I don’t really think I sound like anyone. All rhymes are adaptations of our predecessors, so some rhymes may be modern alterations of what other artists may have said before but as far as style I sound like Xavier Osayande. How soon can we start looking for the next X.O. album or mixtape? Me and my brother from another Kidd Upstairs are cookin’ up a joint effort for all of our fans who wanna see us go bar for bar that you can expect this summer, and the next solo tape from me you can expect in August.

Any artists that you would like to work with in the future? Man there are so many but if I had to name a few I’d start with Kanye West, that man is a savant, he sees music differently than most, even if I couldn’t get on a track with him I would love to pick his brain. Dom Kennedy, Kendrick Lamar, they are ushering in a new era of west coast music, although my music doesn’t sound like the West Coast that is still where my allegiance lies and would love to be apart of that movement. And of course Fabolous my favorite East Coast artist. Rick Ross, that man has undeniable talent for makin good music, people question his credentials, but its entertainment and that man can make a hit record. Tupac or Biggie? Tupac, next question (laughs). In the spirit of all of the Summer Super Hero Blockbusters coming out, if you had one super power what would it be? Because Superman is too cliché because he can do everything, I would say I would like to be Wolverine from the X-Men he is a rogue, doesn’t give a damn what people say and he will live forever, something I wish were possible. Platinum selling recording artist or Superhero? Superhero, these days platinum selling recording artists are fabrications, or creations of the industry. Some of the best albums I heard in 2011 didn’t go platinum or even gold. Just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it’s dope. Plus chicks love a superhero. Would you like to Shout Out anyone?

What’s next for X.O.? More shows, more quality music, more videos, more give-aways, more money, development as a person and an artist. You can catch X.O. in the first video off of Check Please Vol. 3, B.O.I. (Bottles Over Ice) on his Youtube channel, his next video Orange Soda is scheduled for release this month. You can find X.O. @ @xorockstarmuzik | www.facebook.com/xorockstarmuzik | www.youtube.com/xorockstarmuzik

119 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

Shout out every single one of my fans that f**k with me and Rockstar Muzik, shout out my mom and pop I got the bachelors degree (laughs). Kidd Upstairs the leader of the RM coalition, the 54 platoon man my brothers for life, Rod Benson at BoomTho let’s get this money bruh bruh, The good people at Dienasty Select. Ben Jader at TSS for rockin’ with me since day one. All the fathers of the daughters who I dated who assumed I wouldn’t make it in life, how’s that retirement plan lookin now sir? My brother for holding me down since day one, showing me right from wrong and how to make the wrong look right, teaching me the game early and allowing me to see my first pair of sorority tits at age 13 (laughs).

Music Reviews

120 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

By Taylor Romine

Nearing their 20th anniversary of combining their artistic talents in the heart of San Francisco, Train released their sixth album on April 17th. This is the second album made by the band after their several year break-up, and the sound and energy they are giving out are more powerful and unique than ever before. California 37 has a variety of sounds and tastes that appeal to a myriad of audiences. Train, which was originally a rock/alternative band, has made the gradual transition into more of a pop rock group. Taking this into consideration, the group tried to go back to their roots with songs like Sing Together, We Were Made For This, and California 37. It is not the same rock sound as their first album but definitely has major influence over it. Another reference to their past musical tastes is can be heard on the song Bruises. Featuring Ashley Monroe, it adds that little touch of country twang that can be heard in songs such as Meet Virginia and She’s On Fire on previous albums.

With the good comes the bad, which comes with their fair share of pop songs. This Will Be My Year, Drive By, 50 Ways To Say Goodbye, and Mermaid. Their newest single Drive By is a lagging on the deep lyrical aspect, but if listened to enough will get stuck in your head with its catchy tune. While it is not a horrible song, you can add it on the list of overplayed hits for the summer. On the other hand, This Will Be My Year and 50 Ways To Say Goodbye are much more interesting to listen to. To those who do not follow the band on a regular basis, This Will Be My Year seems like a random sprawling of events. In reality it is actually a timeline of events corresponding to the birth and development of the band, and makes subtle gestures to big events that changed the course of the band). 50 Ways To Say To Goodbye is one of the funnier songs on the album, dealing with a bad break up by saying different ways their ex has suddenly disappeared. Both of these songs have a very fast tempo and lyrical style that is so fast it is almost like rap. It may be a challenge to sing along to on the radio, but they will be entertaining nonetheless. It is also easy to see the influence singer Pat Monahan’s young children have on his song writing with the song Mermaid. Monahan portrays his current wife as this magical mermaid that he was lucky enough to find on “an island so remote only Johnny Depp has ever been to it before”. It is very playful and most likely will be a hit with children, but not so much with the older audience that generally follows Train. To counteract the light heartedness of many of the album’s songs, When The Fog Rolls In and Feels Good At First provide some gloom to the album. Feels Good At First originally comes off as a happy-go-lucky song, but after listening to it a couple times it becomes more apparent that it quite the opposite. The entire album has a lot of subtle notions towards concepts and ideas that are quite vague to their origins. These songs give the entire album the depth it needs to reach audiences on a personal level again. For the many fans of the famous song Drops of Jupiter, You Can Finally Meet My Mom provides the unofficial second half of this song. The opening piano chords for this song are the same ones for Drops only more quietly played. It is one of the most heart striking songs on the album, and I have seen many burst out crying at concerts when hearing this song. While being an overall sweet song, it shows that Train is able to do more than cheerful songs all the time unlike Save Me San Francisco. If you listen to any song on this album, it should be this one.

In the end, California 37 could be considered one of their strongest albums yet. It may not be the same sound they originally had as a band, but they all seem to be proud of the work they have put into this album. This album shows the energy of being back together as a band even more than Save Me San Francisco. Listen for yourself and check out the number four album in the US.

121 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

It is highly suggested that if you have the slightest interest in this album, or any of their other albums, you should see them in concert. When they perform they give off a lot of positive energy and really interact with their audience. An interview with Miki Vale By Adrianne Miller

Introduce yourself! Tell us a little bit about you. MV: I’m Miki Vale. Emcee, artist, entrepreneur, promoter, and sometimes DJ if needed :) I heard Hot produced by Kankick (the song is hot, by the way… no pun intended), how would you best describe your style and what do you feel sets you apart from other artists (this is you opportunity to brag)? MV: I think what sets me apart from some other artists is that I do what I feel, not what I think will get me noticed or try to emulate what other artists are doing. My style is very much my own. It’s soulful and from the heart. I’m also very versatile. I’m a multi-faceted person so my music is also multi-faceted, you never know what to expect from me, whether in life or in music. What inspires Miki Vale? Who do you listen to on regular basis? MV: I’m inspired by the world. By every day life. I might watch a documentary or hear a story about something that happened to someone and be inspired to put my thoughts about it to music. I’m also inspired by different artists and producers and the passion they put into their work. I listen to a lot of soul, like Bilal, Eric Roberson, Jill Scott, Georgia Anne Muldrow. I listen to a lot of different producers like Hi-Tek, Dilla, Kev Brown, Jazzy Jeff, etc. Just feel-good music, anything with a nice soulful groove to it. When did you decide to get really involved in the music industry as an artist, and what was one of the first lessons you learned coming in?

122 | www.theGOODSmag.co • May 2012

MV: I honestly don’t think I ever made a conscious decision to be involved in the music industry, it just happened. I was always around artists, musicians, dj’s, promoters, etc and music was always around me since birth so I guess it was just a natural progression to be involved with some aspect of the industry. One of the first lessons I learned was rule number 4080... it’s a very shady business. There’s always someone who will try and wheel and deal, especially with me being a female. There’s a lot of fast talkers in this business. So I’ve learned to move carefully and never place too much on what people talk about, but rather wait for them to show and prove.

What would say is you favorite part about working with music? MV: My favorite part is that I can do anything I set my mind to. Music is never-ending, so as long as you have the ability to create you can do anything with it. And it has lead to so many other areas opening up for me. I’m fortunate enough to have been able to parlay the elements I’ve learned from music to doing other things creatively, like promoting events and shows, dj’ing, etc. I’ve been able to travel and work with a lot of very talented people that I respect and admire. My one goal in life has been to be able to live comfortably by utilizing my talents and I’m currently doing that thanks to music. It’s freedom. Is there any artist that you would want the opportunity to work with and is there anyone wouldn’t mind working with again? MV: There’s lots of people I’d like to work with. I’d love to work with Raphael Saadiq because I think he’s a brilliant artist and producer. Probably everyone I’ve ever worked with I’d like to work with again at some point and probably will. If there was one thing that you wanted listeners to take away from your music what would that be? MV: Love. Everything I do is done out of love. If I don’t feel it, I don’t do it. So anything I do you know my heart was put into it. What can we expect to see and hear from Miki Vale in 2012? MV: You can expect to see me continue to work and drop music. You’ll see more videos and lots of cameos because I’ve been working with a lot of not only different artists, but different types of artists. I’m also working on a book and couple other things I don’t want to expose just yet, I’d rather just show you. I’m all about building and expanding though and I believe there is no limit to what we can do as humans as long as we put our mind to it. Okay, one last question and it’s going to be random. What are three movies that make you laugh the hardest? MV: 40 Year Old Virgin, Pineapple Express and Old School Any closing statements?

By: Michael Brewer Dusting herself off after being axed from X-Factor USA, Cheryl weathered the storm and now embarks on her third solo record “A Million Lights” with the lead single “Call My Name.” The song is produced by famed UK Electro-House DJ Calvin Harris (Rihanna, Kelis, Kylie Minogue). With a fuzzy-bassline, ambient melody and pulse-pumping drum loop the song takes its cue from his previous chart-topper “We Found Love.” An amazing DancePop record with lush-laded vocals and 90’s club remnants that is sure to call you to the dance-floor all summer long.

The Yes Ma’ams – Taste Test (Album Review) Released April 2012

By: Michael Brewer

Their debut single “Only If I Say So” takes the art of sex into a authoritative direction. With its bombastic bass, glittery synthesizers and pounding kick-drum the ladies proclaim their dominance in the bedroom. The angst-infused “Got A Problem” is a hate letter to an overly jealous woman. A whirling phaser, swurling synths and 8-bit sirens blaring over a thundering beat, the girls carefully blast the insecure woman. The last offering is the feel good 80’s romp “Light Up The Night.” Sex and sin is the name of this game. And if you play by the rules they will let you into their world. Lots of tasty treats to enjoy from this album. Sugar, spice and sometimes not so nice. However, that is what girls are made of after all. And It seems that girls just want to have fun. And if you ask them they will tell you “Yes Ma’am!” (Taste Test is currently available for free download via their official website at www.yesmaams.com)

Not long ago. turning through stations looking for something to listen to on the radio was a common pass time. The introduction to the trio’s album Taste Test has the girls doing just that. Many 80’s classics can be heard throughout which seems to give a nice prelude of things to come. The ladies of “The Yes Ma’ams” are a R&B/Pop trio by way of Atlanta, GA. They are heavily influenced by 80’s Pop, Funk and Club culture. The first track is an Urban club-thumper “Firestarter” filled with stadium-bass, sirens and a thrashing drum loop. “Vanessa” serves up another Urban affair with the girls describing a feisty inner diva that lives in all women. “Current Affair” and “What Girls Are Made Of” is dripping with 80’s funk nostalgia a la Prince and Shelia E. The Ma’ams describe the way to get to their love below singing “Don’t You Want Pet Misses Kitty/Misses Kitty.”

Surprise at Coachella By Autumn Endara Welcome to the desert oasis of ornate headdresses, bikini tops, camping tents, hipsters, and indie rock. In other words, welcome to Coachella. Coachella, formally known as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Annual Festival, is the three day music-fest that has rocked southern California for over ten years. This year, the world-renowned music festival provided two weekends of acts, due to the event’s dramatic increase in popularity. Weekend one of Coachella 2012 brought incredible performances, including Swedish House Mafia, Florence + the Machine, and even Radiohead. However, little did everyone know how much the epic closer on Sunday night would trump all of these performances. For one night in the desert, Tupac Shakur came back to life. In the days leading up to Coachella and even during the event itself, buzz circulated about the Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg performance. Two of hip-hop’s greatest artists on stage together is amazing enough, but nothing could prepare the crowd for the return of a beyond authentic hologram version of Tupac. Even I had to take a double take when I saw the YouTube video. There he was, rising out of the bottom as the stage as if he was rising up from the grave (unless he was never in the grave in the first place, which then perpetuates my secret hope that Tupac is still kicking it on one of his many blocks). He performed “Hail Mary” and even rapped with Snoop during “America’s Most Wanted.” It was purely awesome to see Snoop have the opportunity to perform with his dear friend again, and we all got to benefit from the dynamite collaboration.

What was just awesome, and perhaps even a slight bit creepy, is exactly how real Tupac looked and sounded. How did Coachella producers go about recreating his voice (Tupac died in 1996 and Coachella did not start until 1999. . .insert a second “Tupac IS still alive” conspiracy theory here)? How did they manage to make him look so authentic? His movements, his iconic tattoos, everything? MTV reported that Tupac’s hologram was a dream of Dr. Dre’s and that he worked very closely with San Diego based company AV Concepts to bring the dream to life. $100,000 to $400,000 later, Tupac Shakur was reborn.

Tupac’s evening resurrection shed unforeseen light on a new direction of music. Is it now possible to recreate some of music history’s greatest live performances? Could we finally have the opportunity to go to Woodstock after hearing about how it amazing it was from our once-hippie parents? Or how about Led Zeppelin’s Madison Square Garden Trilogy? The performance could translate into a significant shift in the manner in which the music industry decides to conduct tours for big-ticket artists. Despite the steep cost of tech production required to go into recreating some of our favorite deceased artists, I believe that venues would face very few hurdles in recouping the funds. Diehard Beatles fans, Deadheads, Bob Marley fans? Michael Jackson could finish the final tour he was setting out to complete before his tragic passing. The music industry could have a brand new cash cow on their hands and there are rumors flying now about the possibility of Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and Tupac all going on tour together. I don’t know about you, but I would love to get ahold of one of those tickets. Or a ticket to see The Clash. . .either one would do.
