April Showers by Taylor Romine

It seems as if some are intimidated by rainwear; it has the negative stigma of being bulky and unflattering. But over the years the selection for this area of fashion has grown dramatically. There are many boots that you can hardly tell that they are waterproof. You can also layer them with tights under socks with a cute dress to make a warm transition from winter to spring. To the fortune of the many of us that live in colder weather, trench coats are also extremely in style for this spring and fall. Adding a great tie belt to this also shows your feminine physique and giving you lots of sexual appeal. Any way you wear it; there are many combinations to make the essentials to fight the rain wearable in everyday life.

It is finally Spring! And with that comes baby animals, pastel hues, and of course, lots and lots of rain. But there is no reason to fret when you have many ways to be protected while also being fashionable. This season rain gear is one of the cutest ways to express your enthusiasm for spring.

After a long and weary winter, it is great to display your colorful side even when you are in the rain. An appealing combination that is always a classic is a black and white polka dot raincoat with a fun, printed umbrella. Not only do you fulfill the trend of mixing prints, but you are also doing it in a classically chic way. A floral umbrella print is what I personally suggest as we bloom into spring. It is great because flowers will almost never go out of style, and it adds that pop of color into your ensemble. If you are going for a different type of classic look, animal print is a fantastic way to go. A unique way to wear this could be a leopard cape coat or a fantastic peacock umbrella. This type of print is a style that does fluctuate more on the trending scale, but as long as you keep it relatively simple can be a great statement piece.

Do you not want the attention of your amazing outfit to be covered with bulky material? Say no more, because clear material for rain gear is one of the hottest trends right now. Head to toe, you can get a protective assortment of items that will protect you from the rain. A cute idea is to play out the sixties with a clear bubble umbrella. Not only will your look be very mod, but you will have great coverage also. One of my favorite pieces that would go along with this category would be the transparent Doc Marten boots. You can work the grunge look while also showing off your socks.

Sometimes when the sun decides to shine after a bitterly rainy day, you can dress down the ‘rainy day’ look with some vintage-esque looks. Take a feminine hue with a more rounded collar, a pair of ankle rain boots, and a beautifully laced parasol to give you shade but still feel the warmth. If it were to potentially start raining once more you would still be protected, but not overly layered.

When the word fashion comes to mind we instantly equate high end labels and extravagant runway ensembles with it but in all actuality it is not that complex. Fashion is described as a prevailing custom or style of dress, etiquette, socializing, etc. In other words to be “fashionable” is to exude your individuality through the garments that you wear. Breaking the bank to look good is not necessarily a requirement. There are lots of avenues you can take in order to stay contemporary with the trends in an affordable way.

8 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

Several retailers pride themselves on having the ability to provide their consumers with up-to-date styles at a price that cannot be beat. Stores such as H&M and Forever 21 are globally known for their ahead-of-the-curveball designs and their affordable prices. Having both male and female attire these types of stores can certainly help you keep up with current trends without spending a large sum of money. Although a little on the expensive side in comparison to H&M and Forever 21 Express is another store that has attire for both males and females with decent prices and trendsetting garments.

Another way to look nice without spending a fortune is to be knowledgeable of the retailers that you shop with. It is very helpful to check out the sale section before anything else to find a good deal. You can also join the stores mailing list so that you can be notified ahead of time for sales events, coupons, online or mobile promo codes, and special offers. Always keep in mind that shopping on or directly after a holiday will most likely give you better deals. Plenty of retailers have semiannual sales that are given every six months usually around early summer and the fall. Keep in mind that fashion is always seasons ahead so items such as trench coats, swim suits, and leather are often sold at inexpensive prices when the items are purchased before the season starts or after it ends. For example heavy coats purchased in the summer are not as expensive when purchased in the fall or winter (besides sales events). This rule applies to almost any article of clothing.

As you can see there are several ways to stay current in fashion without spending a fortune. Letting your creative side take over, being knowledgeable of the stores you shop at when it comes to getting deals, knowing the best times of the year to shop, and also using your imagination. Fashion is certainly not about spending a fortune it is about self-expression and individuality which can be done in an affordable manner.

9 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

One final tip that can help you remain stylish and still have money in your bank account is to be creative. For instance distressed denim, crop tops, and studded shorts can be easily produced if you use imagination. Take a simple pair of jeans that you own and get the distressed look by taking a pair of scissors and maybe sandpaper and letting your imagination run wild. It may help to draw a few sketches beforehand to get a general idea of how you would like them to turn out. You can also use a pair of old jeans to create the studded look with shorts as well. This can be done by trying on the jeans and making small marker marks where you plan to cut them at and adding the studs once they are cut. Crafty stores such as Michaels and even WalMart have easy to apply studs.

Mistakes we all make while shopping by Natalia Dominguez

1. Buying unflattering clothes Don’t talk yourself into an outfit that isn’t flattering to your frame regardless of how popular or trendy they are. Remember that you’re shape and size isn’t the same as the girl or guy standing next to you. Your body is unique and there are clothes out there to fit your shape and personality. I like to tell my girlfriends, “There are two types of clothes in this world. Clothes that fit you and clothes that don’t.” Yes, trends come and go, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll all suit you.

2. Don’t buy on impulse Before buying something it is important to ask yourself the following questions: Do I need this?
 Does it fit my lifestyle?
 Where would I wear this?

16 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

If you can’t decide on the item put it on hold.

3. Peer pressure Ladies, I know it’s tough when a girlfriend asks you to go shopping with her and you know that you shouldn’t because you might get tempted to shop when you know that rent is due. Be disciplined. Help your friend in their needs while shopping but remember why you are there in the first place.

4. Buying something without trying it on Okay, I know at some point we have ALL done this. You must try the dress, shirt, or pants, before buying it. The last thing you want is to have paid for an outfit that was “final sale” and getting home and it doesn’t fit. Just because it looked great on the mannequin doesn’t mean it’s going to look great on you. **Extra tip**
If and when shopping for an outfit especially for a cocktail dress, it is a great idea to bring shoes along to help you decide what will look best with the shoes

5. Shopping online Just because there is an online sale and there is free shipping does not mean that you have to shop. Unless you know you’re size and fitting well (which in most cases many don’t) you should not be shopping online. It is harder to tell if it will look good on you. And please, because there’s free shipping it doesn’t mean you have to shop!

6. Don’t buy uncomfortable shoes The worst thing anyone can do is buy shoes that are two sizes too small because the shoe is on sale or because it’s the last pair. Believe me, I’ve done it too! Not a great idea. Especially when you pay for a pair of shoes that cost you $300 and you only wear them once. Shame on you. Shame on me.

So, those pair of boots might just be 50% off, but do you really need them? Learn to separate your needs from your wants. Ask yourself if you’re really going to wear them or will they just be a waste of time and closet space. If you were in the store because you were specifically looking for those boots then sales are the great place to be. But, if you casually happen to be in the mall and you saw these shoes and bought them because they were on sale then don’t you think you have a shopping problem?
Bottom line is, we’ve all made these silly shopping mistakes. But don’t you think it’s also silly that you’re buying things and never wearing them? My main advice to you is to separate your needs versus your wants and don’t shop on impulse!

shopping tips When going to a thrift store, it’s important to go with a plan. You don’t have to go knowing exactly what you want, because most likely you won’t find the exact item, but it is a good idea to have some sense of what it is that you’re looking for. Try not to get overwhelmed. Remember that you are going to a thrift store so you may not necessarily find that small, black tank top that you’ve been looking for. So it is important when visiting a thrift store that you go with an open mind. There are times when you’ll get lucky and there are times when you may not. So patience is key. Plan out a budget before you end up spending your next months rent money! It’s better to have not bought anything than to have spent more than you have. My golden rule: make sure it’s something that you actually need and are going to use. Don’t buy something just because it was $5! I also recommend reading the label before you buy the item. If something is surprisingly more than you expected, then sometimes it may be a good thing! You’d be surprised with the and something that you know you can put to use. great items you can find so pay attention. It is also very important that you shop for quality Remember that before you buy something and pay $300 for it, that you try it on. A big mistake that we all do is buy something because we assume

18 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

it may look good on us or it’s our size. Then, the next thing you know, you get home and it’s something totally different from what you expected. Then you end up with something that you don’t even need! Why the clutter?

Also, make sure that the clothes are in good condition. You want to make sure you examine each of your items carefully. Buttons and zippers are replaceable but even then be careful. Try avoiding anything with holes and stains on it because they may be harder to get off. It is also a good idea to wash your clothes as soon as you get home! Never wear something used until it has been washed. Gross. Thrift Tip: Bring grandma along! For that special discount… Try different thrift stores. Depending on the city, you may find that you have more in common with one thrift store than the other one. So don’t give up on one store. There are great advantages in shopping at a thrift store. You’ll find great things that you can’t find anywhere else. It is also eco friendly, and most of all, it’s fun! Remember to keep our earth green and bring a reusable bag.

Cheap, but Chic by Donna Wilkins

Fashion is always for sale, but not always on sale. And sometimes when it is on sale, well let’s just say 50% off $450 for a designer t-shirt, is not something the majority consider a sale. Why is it when you have money and looking for something in particular you can’t find it? But, when you are broke and window shopping, your ideas could fill your closet.

26 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

So how do you stay current in fashion without spending a fortune? When it comes to handbags, take a lesson from Jennifer Hudson’s character in the first Sex and the City movie. Louise from St. Louis rented her designer bags. Now this is a great idea. You can rotate your bags to match your outfit or your mood, without cluttering your closet, or dipping into your savings account. Visit bagborroworsteal. com where starting at $90 a week you can rent high end couture bags by Valentino, Fendi, Gucci or Louis Vuitton. If that is a little too pricey, on the same site you can rent under $40 the likes of Kate Spade, Tory Burch, Juicy Couture or Michael Kors.

What about clothes? For the fashionista on a limited budget, there is T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and Ross. They sell designer clothes at a discounted price. These stores buy the leftovers from department stores. Depending on the location, they can be a goldmine.

Those who have more expendable income should visit Macy’s one day sales, Nordstrom’s half yearly sales in May and November, or even Nordstrom’s Rack. You not only get to shop one of the best known sales, but their well known customer service doesn’t change just because the prices are lower. If you don’t like shopping department stores, neighborhood boutiques also carry well known and well made designs at lower prices. The items for sale in a vintage or thrift store may be gently worn, but still in decent condition.

Outlets are good sources for great shopping and lower prices. Some outlets like Carlsbad Premium Outlet in North County have more of an upscale mall feel. It houses stores such as Barney’s, Banana Republic, Calvin Klein, Brook’s Brothers, Michael Kors, Kenneth Cole and BCBG Azria. You can definitely get designer pieces here. Some items may be a season off, but who can tell?

Now go out and shop the sales, spend less, but dress to impress!

27 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

Shoes are the sole of the outfit. They need to look good, fit properly, feel comfortable, and compliment what you are wearing. If Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik, and Louboutin are just a daydream, visit Bluefly.com where you can find designer shoes at a discount price. If you love stilettos and/or platforms; Jessica Simpson. com has many choices at reduced prices. And who doesn’t love DSW shoe stores? Choices include wedges, flats, heels, boots, or sandals, and so much more.

Top 5 Vintage Stores

in Los Angeles

1. Wasteland 7171 Melrose Ave. Los Angeles CA 90027 I have rated Wasteland as my number one because I appreciate the modern, fresh clothing. But don’t get me wrong, they also have an amazing selection of retro vintage. If you are looking for trendy designer clothes for less, then Wasteland is the perfect store for you. Though I have to admit that their selection could be more on the pricier side but the quality is just as equal. Think of Wasteland more like a high end thrift store. It gives us less of a guilt trip shopping here for designer clothes because we are technically reusing the clothing. You can also sell some of your clothes here. The buyers/sales associates definitely know what they buy and only look for the best.

28 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

I never leave Wasteland without buying something! They always have the hippest goodies. But be prepared to spend more than you expected!

2. Vintage At Heart 4377 Tujunga Ave. Studio City, CA 91604 I truly adore this store! The vibe here is so calm and beautiful from the pastel colors on the wall to the relaxing music and the yummy scents. Immediately I feel that I am in my own closet here. Everything has been handpicked and carefully selected by the buyer so you know it’s a piece that has been selected for its own unique reason. I have to warn you though that this is more of a vintage French-inspired type of store and less of the clothing (not that it’s a bad thing)! You can buy happiness for your home at reasonable prices. From furniture to decorations and artwork to jewelry and clothes. This is also the first place that I have visited that sells lavender sodas? And delicious gourmet cookies?! You better be there! Not to mention the great service! And beware of the wonderful and sweet owner, Tiffany. Overall this place is a pleasure to visit. Prepare yourself for a wonderful experience.

3. Squaresville 1800 N. Vermont Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90027 I consider everything in this store a gem! Each piece seems to have been selected carefully and for a unique reason. And the fact that the girls there can fix things before they take them in is even more awesome! Squaresville carries clothing for both men and women. The store has been divided in two floors where bottom level is for women and the top floor is for men. Everything is neatly hung and well organized making it so much easier to find what you need. This store stands out to me the most for two reasons: for their bags and their shoes. I recently bought a vintage Dooney & Bourke for $34, a definite steal! The fact that the store is smaller also makes it less overwhelming and you still get an amazing vintage shopping experience.

4. Shareen Vintage 1721 North Spring Street Los Angeles, CA 90012 This is the kind of place that I would call “a diamond in the rough.” You ask yourself “where am I?” Then as soon as you walk in your jaw drops and your heart melts. At least that’s how I feel every time I go to Shareen’s. The selection is huge and everything is well organized. The clothes is also very beautiful and in great condition. You have the potential to build a wardrobe that is one of a kind at Shareen Vintage. I guarantee that you will fall in love, just like I did! And the greater part is that there is always a seamstress available if you want any type of alterations. If you have a passion for vintage clothing, then you will appreciate this place!

5. Jet Rag There is an immense amount of clothing in this shop. You may need a couple of hours to go through their selection. This was one of the first vintage shops that I visited when I first moved to Los Angeles. Great stuff you can find here. They have everything from vintage rock and roll t-shirts, to old school vintage dresses. You can even find clothes here that dates back to the 20s. Jet rag is that kind of vintage store where I buy something and take it home to make my own adjustments and make it my own. I do appreciate that Jet rag has everything organized by color and era too. Not to mention their WONDERFUL $1 Sundays! From 9 in the morning until 5 in the evening they have an LA yard sale on their lot and everything is $1. You definitely need to have your hands prepared for digging! And be prepared for some feisty bargainers too. But you’d be surprised with the goodies you can find here!

Sharon Hinnendael

She’s pretty much your everyday actress. Tall, blonde, gorgeous, talented; as well as being a DJ and a huge Packers fan? Ok, maybe she›s a little more than meets the eye. Sharon Hinnendael is a model and actress on the rise. She›s making a name for herself by pushing boundaries and doing what it takes to make her character as real as possible (want proof? Watch LOOK on Hulu). If this girl has any limits, we sure haven›t seen them yet. Looking at her work, you may expect her to be a little over-the-top, but she›s really a chill, laid-back, one-of-theguys type of girl. We got to sit down with Sharon and learn a little more about the sexy tomboy from Wisconsin. Read on to find out how she got to where she is, how she feels about her most controversial role, and where you can look to see her next. Those of us who follow your tweets know that you›ve been really busy lately. What are you currently working on? I’m currently working on a movie called Resident Advisor, a super funny and not too nudey/sweary college flick. It›s super well cast and everyone is awesome, never been on a set where everyone gets along so well and is so polite. No egos here, which is rare.

What made you decide to pursue acting? Is it something you’ve always been interested in? I was in plays in high school and it was always something I liked but my Dad was really the pusher here. He convinced me (along with my mom and manager) to make the move to LA. I was going to just be here for a month and then the plan was move to Brooklyn. My second audition out here I booked Kissing Strangers and decided to stay longer. It›s been going pretty well since then but still wanting to move to NYC sooner than later. In addition to being an actress, you’re a model. Do you think the experiences are similar, and do you have a preference between the two? Acting and modeling couldn›t be more different. Models generally are pretty chill and interesting because of all the travel and world experiences. You grow up quick in that industry. When I went to Milan, no one held my hand and walked me to my 12 castings in a day. I got a call in the morning with castings and it was up to me to figure out the train and bus schedules and to make them all before days end. Actors get spoiled. Great food on set, nice hotels, somebody with you to answer any and all questions. You have a manager, agent and lawyer making sure all angles are covered. Glad I started in modeling, so much more appreciative of all the perks actors have!!! As far as preference goes, I mean they›re both so awesome in their own way. You book a movie or TV series and you›re working on that for a few months. You get to bond with a cast and crew and create a character. Photo shoots are a day in and out but you can live in a lot more cities and model. For acting you pretty much have to be in LA for TV/film. And commercials are a lot of fun to shoot and can pay insane amounts. I just booked an international commercial and looking forward to filming that. When you›re leaving to go to set, what are your three top must-haves?

Jumpsuit: Pail Sisti Turban: Angela Morano Boot: Skyscrapper Heels Sunglasses: BCBG/MaxAzria

32 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

My three must haves... Pillow from home, big cozy sweatshirt and slippers... I’m tired right now after filming all night so that explains that!

What do you think is your best attribute, physical or otherwise? My best attribute is having 3 older brothers and being from Wisconsin. Those two things made me the lil tomboy hick that I am. If you could work alongside any one actor or actress, who would it be?

33 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

What has been your most memorable acting-related experience? Filming Machine Head was crazy, filming a horror movie takes TONS of energy. With filming all night, screaming your head off, lots of running and crying, I had to be in a weird headspace when working on that, was a dark few months. Filmed a commercial in Germany once that took 24 straight hours for a 30 second spot, was horrible. Rites of Passage was fun, really talented cast. What genres of film do you like acting in the most? My favorite genre is all of them. Love doing comedy and improv and drama is a good release. I love a good cry, man!!! After you wrap a big show or film, what is the first thing you do? After I wrap, I like to sleep for a few days. Get massages and try to regroup and work out and get back on track for the next project. And definitely do some partying, hey, why not...?

34 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

I die for Steve Martin and Josh Hartnett, so hot. Love Kirsten Dunst and Sienna Miller, she›s stunning. In the mockumentary series LOOK, you play the risqué high-school girl Hannah. The role required you to be in sexual situations. Is that something you had to think about a lot before taking on the project? I got approval of my parents and brothers and boyfriend and said hell yeah! It was a crazy part to play and I definitely showed my balls, haha. If the character is crazy and doing drugs and drinking a lot, she›s probably going to get naked for attention. I was in high school once; I know how girls can be. It was an accurate showcase of how real life is behind closed doors when someone is going through issues. Congratulations! You›ve (hypothetically) found a magic lamp. Of course, this means you get three wishes. What do you wish for? 1. I’d give my dad a Ferrari 2. I would have my dog Lenerd live til the day I die 3. A house in Mexico You›re beautiful and talented, but chances are you›ve had some help to get where you are today: Shout-out time! Family helped me out of course. My boyfriend is pretty good at keeping me calm when I have freak-outs. Some days I think «I›m never gonna work again!!!» He›s always telling me to keep going. What can we look forward to seeing from you in the near future? Rites of Passage, Machine Head and Resident Advisor will all be out in 2012. I’m always doing commercials and random photo shoots so keep an eye out. Oh, and my Packers are going to win the Super bowl so, as part owner of the team, pretty excited for that to happen again.

Rules for Wearing Prints by Christine DiMaria

Wearing prints can be a fun way to express yourself and your sense of style. It’s even a way to look trendy in many instances. But, wearing prints the wrong way has the total opposite effect. So you don’t stand out in a negative way, you should always keep these rules in mind: One Print at a Time You’ve heard the saying, “Take one step at a time,” and the same concept is applicable when it comes to wearing prints. Only wear one print at a time, even if the colors match. A pattern clashes with other patterns. Rules Regarding Horizontal Stripes If you’re on the heavier or wider side, horizontal stripes will do you absolutely no favors. In fact, they will increase the width of your body. Being Plastered with a Pattern A cute paisley blouse with a flower pattern is one thing, but a shirt and pants with large red and blue flowers is tacky, tacky... did I mention, tacky?

36 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

Choosing a Pattern for You Not everyone can pull off large purple, pink and brown polka dots. Keep in mind your current style—whether it is more laid back or more outgoing. If you’re into apparel that gets attention, you might be able to pull off any pattern. On the contrary, someone with a shy personality might be more comfortable in a subtle pattern, such as a blue striped shirt or a red and black plaid skirt.

Vertical Stripes The vertically challenged will find horizontal stripes a godsend, since they accentuate person’s height. On the other hand, someone who is already tall should avoid vertical stripes, because they’ll make you look like a giant.

37 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

Animal Print Stick to one animal print at a time. You should never wear a leopard print purse with a zebra print pair of shoes, unless you want to advertise for your local zoo. The same theory should be applied to wearing more than one piece of animal print. Always remember, a little animal print goes a long way.

Style Psychology: Wear it without Fear By Kristle McCullough

‘80s fashion is back in a loud way. Or at least that’s what you fear as you try to incorporate these renewed trends into your 2012 wardrobe. But if you fear walking around in loud clothing don’t let pastels, neons, large floral prints and peplum skirts discourage you. We will show you how you can tone them down for a subtle flare for everyday wear. Who would have thought a pop of neon could balance out a pastel ensemble?! Try a pastel dress paired with neon-framed sunglasses and a stack of bracelets with peeks of neon or a pair of neon shoes for just the right amount of pop. When it comes to wearing neon colors, rather than dousing yourself head to toe, try it in small doses. Additionally, pastel color blocking looks great layered with straight-line pieces. To create interest while helping shy away from looking to “step ford” incorporate neutral tones, such as tans and grays for a clean sophisticated look. prints like leopard or to reiterate “solid neutrals”.

Floral prints offer just the right amount of pop when coupled with layered color blocking. Try a pair of floral print pants from topshop. com. Use colors found in the print to select a solid shirt, jacket, belt and shoe pairings. You could use a contrasting colored scarf to balance this outfit out.

Peplum skirts are great for creating the illusion of a tiny waist. This style transitions great from work to evening. There are peplum jackets that give the same benefits, yet feel more versatile. The CASUAL PEPLUM JACKET from White House Black Market is a great option for spring. It has a neutral tan color that can transition well from day to evening; it also comes with a remov-

Tips and Tricks to Staying Beautiful Without Cosmetic Surgery by Christine DiMaria

In this day and age, many people utilize the quick solution of cosmetic surgery, in order to slow down the aging process. However, this alternative is a costly option that comes with a great deal of risk, such as infection or the possibility botched procedure. Instead of going under the knife, you can look beautiful for less with these tips and tricks. Improving the Appearance of Fine Line When you choose a concealer, make sure you select one that is slightly lighter than your natural skin tone. Remember, it should only be a tad bit lighter, or else you’ll create a clown-like look. Use this concealer to fill in fine lines and wrinkles on the face. If you’re looking for something to reduce and prevent fine lines and wrinkles—which are caused by skin losing its elasticity—then you may want to look toward an alternative method to anti-aging products on the market. Many of the products available are not proven to work and oftentimes come with quite a price tag. Replace those store-bought remedies with something right from your refrigerator. By soaking a towel with whole milk or buttermilk and then placing it on your face, you can prevent fine lines and wrinkles. These milk products consists of alphahydroxy acids, which comprise many of the anti-aging treatments used in salons. Rub the milk on your skin and allow it to dry. After it dries, use warm water to remove it. Use this treatment once a day. Yogurt also contains alphahydroxy acids, so try applying a thin layer of plain whole yogurt to your skin and leaving it on for approximately 30 minutes. Wash off using warm water and repeat this facial daily. Develop a Skin Routine You must take care of your skin everyday, in order to keep your youthful appearance. Washing your face twice a day helps to reduce the toxins lurking on your skin that ultimately cause your skin to age. Taking off your makeup daily is a huge factor in how fast your skin ages, as well. The chemicals found in makeup break down the collagen found in skin, which will affect the elasticity of it, which leads to wrinkles and fine lines.

Try Microdermabrasion Microdermabrasion refers to a spa treatment that is used to remove the top layer of dead skin cells, so that your skin looks fresh and rejuvenated. Rather than go to the spa, you can use a home treatment to accomplish the same task. Although the results are not exactly that of a professional microdermabrasion, you’ll definitely notice a difference.

Too Much of a Good Thing is Too Much Makeup is a great invention that can really have an impact on a woman’s self esteem and her overall appearance. It hides unsightly blemishes and even has the ability to make those short eyelashes look long and voluminous. However, using makeup in excess actually has the opposite effect. You’ll look older than you really are when you cake on layer after layer of foundation and apply a one-centimeter thick line of eyeliner to border your eyes. Use makeup to cover up blemishes and crow’s feet, and to accentuate your eyes, but never, and I repeat NEVER go overboard with your makeup. The rule is if you do heavy eyes, don’t do your lips. On the contrary, if you use a bright colored lipstick, forgo the smoky eye.

Choosing Attire Look your age. In others words, never wear what the teenagers are wearing. You’ll do yourself a huge injustice, when you try to dress younger then you are. This is another one of those things, where you place emphasis on your age, rather than defy it. Live a Healthy Lifestyle This is the most important rule of all—take care of yourself and your overall health, because when you don’t, it shows on the outside and on the inside. Make sure you eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and veggies, and low in saturated fat. Nutrients like vitamin A and E are beneficial to the skin, you must eat a well-balanced diet. Avoid drugs and smoking. Both age your skin tremendously, and so does alcohol.

55 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

Another rule you should follow is: always use cream makeup as opposed to powdered, when you reach a point where you have fine lines and wrinkles. Creams blend into the crevices, while a powder stays on the surface and actually highlights the appearance of wrinkles.

FOUR POINTS

Best Hair Care by Taylor Romine An outfit is never complete without the perfect hair, so why not give it the best care you can? Your hair needs all the nutrients it can get in order to give you the perfect style. So we did some research with professional stylists about the best and worse for your hair to cut the time and money spent looking for the perfect product. One thing that should be noted when looking for the best product for you is everyone’s hair is different. Texture, chemical processes, and how much time you want to spend on your hair are big factors of what is the product for you. It is also important to remember that just because a certain shampoo and conditioner are great for you, doesn’t mean their extra hair care products are. It might take a while to find the perfect product for you, but it will be worth it. A hair care trend that is quite popular in mass media is using “sulfatefree” shampoos. While it is preferable that you do not have sulfate in your hair care products, it is not as big of a deal as the media tries to make it. It is a cleaning agent that makes your hair sudsy and just really isn’t necessary. Almost all grocery store and some salon products have the compound sodium sulfate, even if it claims it doesn’t. A great real sulfate free shampoo is the Wen hair care line. You only need to wash your hair once a week, which may seem odd, but apparently works wonders.

66 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

If you are looking for a base to start off with your hair, two highly recommended lines are Redken and Wella. Redken supplies a different range of shampoo and conditioner combinations that will revitalize you hair with moisture and control, no matter what the hair type. Wella is famous for specializing in different hair types in order to get what you need. When looking for something that is right for your hair you need to pay close attention to the details. Ph balance will make sure to keep you hair in a healthy chemical state, which is a regulation for many salon products. It is also good to remember that sometimes more is less when it comes to moisture. Your hair can definitely suffer from lack of moisture in it, but it can be equally damaging with an exuberant amount.

After getting your roots, it is always great to go the extra step. A quality leave in conditioner type of product is the It’s a Ten Leave In Plus Keratin. It adds the extra recovery moisture that you need to keep your hair healthy. A miracle product that has seven different types of oils in one is the Intensive Hair and Skin Oil from Enjoy. Within a week you will notice a major difference in the texture of your hair. Many use this as a replacement for Moroccan oil, and it is a great deal considering how much you get in the bottle.

While it is pretty well known which products aren’t the best quality in the hair care industry, sometimes certain lines are marketed in a way that doesn’t show the truth. A salon grade product line is the Paul Mitchell hair care. It is more often than not too mild for most hair types, and ends up leaving the hair straw-like. Paul Mitchell uses vegetable protein instead of human, so it doesn’t fit in with the hair chemical bonding. So while it can coat the hair, it never really penetrates it. Another hair care line that is not so great for your hair is the Pantene line, which claims to be incredible for your hair but generally falls short. In the end it really goes back to hair type in the search for justice for your hair. But when you get compliments on how healthy and perfect your hair looks, it will be more than worth it.

67 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

Now we all know that we can’t all afford to get our hair professionally colored in salons, so what should we look for to make sure we don’t do too much damage to our hair? It is very important to get a hair color that is ammonia free. Not only does it make your hair smell like chemicals, it really has an impact on the texture of your hair. For a professional and higher quality color, Wella is once again a great product to use. But surprisingly exceptional lower grade colors you can buy in drug stores are the John Frieda foam products. It produces an intense color and stays for a considerable amount of time.

Gabrielle Lewis, Fashion Stylist by Christine DiMaria

Gabrielle Lewis is a celebrity wardrobe stylist who has worked with various celebrities ranging from Brando Eaton to Tamera Mowry. Her status as a celebrity stylist has led her to working with an assortment of publications, including Marie Claire, People, Maxim and the L.A. Times. She's even styled some of the models in our publication. I had to opportunity to interview Gabrielle, and I have to say that fashion is definitely in her blood. If you don't believe me, here is what I learned from Gabrielle: Gabrielle grew up as more of a tomboy, rather than a girly girl. In other words, she wasn’t always glamorous with her own unique style and an eye for design like she is today. Her family wasn’t incredibly wealthy, so high-end couture really wasn’t an option. It wasn’t until her older sister introduced her to shopping that she really took an interest in clothing and accessories. She looked up to her sister, which is what aroused her love for shopping. She truly morphed from a tomboy into a fashionista once she started working and making her own money. When she first began in the fashion world, Gabrielle was a fashion consultant, which was the foundation of her career. Not long after, she became an assistant, which gave her a more accurate picture of what she wanted to do. It wouldn’t be long until she entered into the world of fashion styling. Her sense of style comes from various places, including her inspirations: Kate Middleton, Beyonce and Michelle Obama. Although she would enjoy working with any of the A-list celebrities, in particular, she would love to work with Michelle Obama.

70 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

Despite the fact that she would like to work with various celebrities, she already has an impressive resume of stars that she has styled, and she has savored the opportunity to work with each one of them. However, she has styled Kendra Wilkinson more than any other celeb. So you might be wondering what Kendra is like to work with...Well we have the answer! Gabrielle told us that Kendra is definitely a pleasure to work with and very easy going. Although she doesn’t have a particular “style” that she tends to be partial to, Gabrielle does have some designers that she’s partial to. In fact, the typical designers who have clothing lines at Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s are amongst her faves. She also adores fashions by Trevor Rains, since his apparel is handmade and truly unique.

If she never had the opportunity to become a wardrobe stylist, she would still want to be in the fashion world, since fashion is her passion. However, she enjoys the business aspect of the industry as well, and she could picture herself starting her own business. Fortunately for stars such as Scottie Thompson and Jessica Parker Kennedy, Lewis had the tremendous success that resulted in her becoming a stylist. Lewis says that her job isn’t difficult. But that’s not because of the nature of the job; it’s because she makes her job as easy and as enjoyable as she possibly can. A typical workday for Gabrielle begins with her pulling clothes from show rooms and stores. Once she has various options, it’s time to hit the road with her assistant and head to the location of the shoot. After she delivers the apparel and unloads, it’s time to setup and go over the original idea with the client. Because everyone has different likes, she must adjust the look accordingly to meet the tastes of the client. Even though she has had a great deal of success, there’s always room to grow, and she’s up for whatever life has in store for her. She might not have a set plan of where she wants to go from here, but she does hope to do some styling for movies.

Here at The G.O.O.D.S, we’re not just about dishing on what we’ve learned about the already established, we want to help individuals out there who take an interest in this career path. And, Gabrielle gave some words of advice. She wants newbies to know if you’re only interested in this field for the money, you may want to consider a different profession, since the money doesn’t come right away. She wants people to know that it takes time to become successful, and if you don’t do it because you love styling, you will become frustrated and quit. She also states that you need to have a genuine love for fashion. Not to mention, you need to be humble and have a good attitude to truly make something of yourself in this field.

Music Reviews

Nabiha – More Cracks Review (Sony Music) If you have been an avid watcher of VH1, then chances are you may have heard some of Nabiha’s music being played during some of the shows. Specifically, Mod Wives which used one of her tracks (A personal favorite of mine in fact) “You.” Intrigued by this song, I did some research on the Danish Soul Songstress and I was pleased with that I discovered. Nabiha grooves to the beat of Retropop with a dash of electronic. Dancing along to funky sounds of “Never Played the Bass” with its Jazz Hall horns, slinky drum loop and a smooth sample from Womack & Womack’s “Teardrops.” The album has a cohesive quality to it without sounding like a copy/paste affair. Nabiha’s soulful delivery and sultry harmonies melt into the song sweetly. One standout track from the album “Can’t Do Anything” has Nabiha involved in a love triangle that leaves her alone in the end. This song has an urgency and aggression not found anywhere else on the album. Being the other woman has a left her as a woman scorned. She lashed out singing “If I was that kind of B%$th I’d tell your girl she don’t mean s$%t!”

72 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

Nabiha has crafted a well-paced, cohesive, vintage-inspired Pop record that sounds relevant and current. With small splashes of electronica, it gives the album a fresh contemporary feel. A sweet surprise I could get used to; hopefully we can see more cracks that make up Nabiha.

Young London – Young London Review (Fugitive Records)

The album slides on a belt of glittery electro fuzz and well developed infectious pop hooks. The album returns pop back to being fun, exhilarating and cool. No song is over produced or overly complicated with ambiguous subtext. That is not to say the album is devoid of artistic expression. The album has a “less is more” simplicity that is rather refreshing in today’s overly self-indulgent pretentious Pop landscape. From the club-fizzle of “Dangerous” to the fun times of “Good Stuff,” the album has great balance of sexy and sweet. The album is well polished and fun. Especially the kind of record you play during a long drive or a summer bash. It’s charming without being cheesy and cool without thinking its cooler than you. It’s very much the kind of album that makes the pretty girls sing your songs.

73 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

One lyric that seems to stick inside my cerebellum is “You want to get with me, I’m a celebrity.” Though, this album is less about a Celebrity/Fame obsession and more focused on Youth Culture. However, it’s clear that Young London has a clear idea and was well executed.

The Yes Ma’ams – Only If You Say So (Single Review)

74 | www.theGOODSmag.co • April 2012

The new Atlanta based R&B/Pop trio describe themselves as a “blending of the sex appeal of Vanity 6, with the calm cool of TLC and a dash of the flirty fun of the Spice Girls.” Fusing undeniable sensuality and sultry vocals, their debut single “Only If I Say So” is drenched with a club-knocking bassline that demands your attention. Written by Kevin Michael and produced by Linx, the song chronicles the ladies dominion over the bedroom and the pleasures that follow. The ladies each take turns giving commands to their lovers. It’s sexy in a classy way without trying too hard. Their debut single is a nice entrance into the mainstream landscape. Hopefully there is more of this to follow in the coming months.

The Swedish model-turned-Electropop singer who won Swedish Idol in 2009 has embarked on an international pop music invasion. Already making waves here in the States, she was named 10 Artists to Know in 2011 by the New York Post. With “Call My Name,” her latest single, she sings about self-reflection of teen angst and love. There is urgency in her voice that is heightened by the frantic synthesizers and throbbing kick drum. The chorus has an anthemic quality to it that makes it hard to forget. With its 80’s New Wave sound and soaring vocals, it’s a glorious musical rhapsody.
