MEN AT PLAY

by: Jennifer Jewels

Fashon is the abortive issue of vain ostentation and exclusive egotism: it is haughty, trifling, affected, servile, despotic, mean and ambitious, precise and fantastical, all in a breath — tied to no rule, and bound to conform to every whim of the minute. -William Hazlitt

On October 8, 2010, Donna Karan announced her own, albeit literal version of a weather report—perhaps she predicted the impending snowstorm of December. Weather conditions are not exactly top priority for the fashion elite ( what is a few inches of snow when you’re wearing six inch stilettos?) For men, Karan anticipated their more conservative approach, three different versions of a popsicle orange, slate gray, and white color blocked shirt seen above In addition, cotton suits varying in cuts in a color palette of blues, khakis, and slate gray aided in the much awaited arrival of the first golf outing.

When Martyn Bal made his debut this spring and announced backstage that he anticipated a new, younger customer would see the appeal of his proposals, we knew we’re in for something new from the house. Chuck Bass from the Upper East Side to the Hamptons—it may sound like Eric Daman or Stephanie Savage’s vision for an upcoming episode of Gossip Girl, however it was Bal’s reference for the much younger clientele. However, he anticipates they will wear a sheeny maroon three piece suit (right) worn by Model Daniel Lonnstrom or a powder blue dress shirt with a faux black bib(left) worn by Johannes Niermann so lucky for Bal, Donatella was available for creative—and historical back up to maintain the essence of Versace with the sophisticated black suits and for the finale, 12 models came down the runway in black-and-white Vorticist patterned swim trunks and matching silk robes, paying homage to the late Gianni’s mantra: “I like the body. I like to design everything to do with the body.” At John Galliano, Models emerged from the oversized clock backdrop, newspapers askew, and a smoke screen which added to the theatric elements in Galliano’s own rendition of Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times”. When Scott Barnhill dashed onto the catwalk in white face paint and a mustache that rivaled the Little Tramp taking any of the runway looks and making them a part of your spring wardrobe may seem like a daunting task. However, all one must do is peel away the showy eccentricities ( leave the faux Chaplin mustache and white face paint for Jessica Alba in Allure magazine) and your left with the excessively shrunken jackets (albeit just for the show), dropped-crotch pants( left), three piece suits, (right), twill trenches (bottom) available at www. luisaviaroma.com. For Galliano, dressing up…people just do not do it anymore. We have to change that.” This spring the message is clear: It is imperative that you make your own silver screen debut.

With spring just around the corner we must become one with the atmosphere, which simply means shed the old and bring in the new as the seasons change colors so should we. What I love oh so much about spring is the chance to play with lots of colors and ideas. What we saw during fashion week’s Spring 2011 collections were reduced whites, bold prints and even bolder dares. As we left 2010 so did 80’s trends and now we blast further into the past in 2011. Women are going back to flirty color calf-length skirts and dresses, leaving a great deal to the imagination; and men are becoming more aware of their

MANnerism, taking shorts back to their daring original thighcut length.

This spring will bring new fresh mints and blazing prints. Here are 3 good tips to get you springing forward:

18 THE G.O.O.D.S MAGAZINE February 2011

GO WITH THE FLOW:

Spring makes us feel fresh and free, never be afraid to express that in an outfit. You have to feel free to try anything just once and who knows it may just turn out to be your fashion “go-to” of a lifetime.

SPRING IS NOT SPELLED S.U.M.M.E.R:

Remember spring is a shift season that helps move us out of chills and into thrills, so don’t be afraid to mix long with short. IT IS OK to throw a jacket on with shorts and a pair of sandals; this shows you understand that summer is not quite here.

FEET FIRST!

Remember you have been shielding your walkers for months and now you have a chance to let them breath. Catch the first sandal sale at Macy’s and buy one in every color!

M

TERESA Strolling around dark alley ways and unnamed cross paths towards the local fort of comfort, an unleashed vixen illuminates the night as wolves howl at a full moon’s light. No need for a body guard, the fierce tempered women depicted in Teresa Moore’s collection can stand alone at nights fall. As the damsel seemingly breezes through the shadowy taverns she reaches the bar and swings open the door and all the pitch drunk men turn towards her to give her a wink and a loud whistle, but she pays them no mind. Her table is reserved at the local cabaret, but the talented self-taught artist herself is as free-spirited as the women she paints on canvas with acrylics and oil bars.

MOORE

19

After living on three continents and embracing all culture, history and art of San Francisco, London, Rome, Los Angeles, Paris and Phoenix, the artist began to experiment with paint using her inspiration gathered throughout the years. To get a closer look into the darker side of Moore’s personality, this dance lovers’ iPod playlist reveals consists Elvis Costello, Cure, Clash, and Mazzy Star. Moore gets her inspiration also from other painters of Francis Bacon, David Lynch with deep rooted darkness, and art by Nick Cave and Wim Wenders to allude the canvas with drama and sectual implications. Combining the use of her ballet and jazz dance background, a dollop of desire to paint and a glossy theatrical background Moore has no problem conjuring up a dusky scene in the 1920’s in a smoke filled bar or an entire pantyhose-filled brothel house where the girls come a dime a dozen. Using 20 THE G.O.O.D.S MAGAZINE February 2011

an array of color and depth into her paintings of contemporary women in exotic situations allure the viewer and at the same time add heat to the fire and spice things up. These women reveal their skin and have nothing to hide but in the shadows of the room where they lie on a sleepy couch with lights dimmed to perfection lies a slightly checkered past. Moore’s seductive demimondaines might lure the wedded man into a shadow and after take his gold. Word on the street says these women take leisurely strolls in night around Chicago’s busty central business district to the clubs to be a spectade for the men. Inspired by the culture of the 1920’s and 30’s and a burlesque theater dance background this artist illustrates scenes with fancy showgirls, dancers, hookers, lust versus love and fleeting summer romances.

Although all her angels, vampires and sultry women inhabit the same world, you get taken on a different ride, each time seducing viewers and taking them on a journey not to be forgotten. “I mainly draw just women alone with no maternal instinct and no children, the men are more like accessories”. In the midst of nightfall the women can stand alone like a single warrior not bound by commitment. Being able to be sexually grounded gives the women a unique confidence to display their goods and each of them own it being fearless in anything they do.

“WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET”,

and in her fiery portrait of a deranged man eater the cannibal yells, “DON’T F*CK WITH ME”, says Moore. Her work can be seen around the globe in various museums in Europe, Paris, Italy and Spain for their distinguished essence of love and sexuality. A new year brings new things and new inspiring ideas and in 2011, she also leaves the little city by the water to a new town. Between packing her things from her apartment in San Francisco and heading from the Bay to LA, Moore kisses goodbye her beloved actor boyfriend of two years and heads south to the next town. In the heart of downtown LA on Art Gallery road, she settles into a high-rise building after getting her previous residence raided and her belongings stolen from her home by greedy thieves. “I feel like each of my paintings is like a pregnancy, they’re all my children and when one gets stolen it’s like my baby is missing”.

21

Despite mishaps and rainfall, Moore put on her first LA art show on the 12th of January at Studio City downtown to display her talents and mingle with the locals. The talented artiste keeps busy dancing burlesque and striptease in a city full of nightclubs and a busy city life while gaining inspiration for her 2011 collection. Painting and dancing are not the only activities she keeps busy with Moore also catches busses to local theatrical auditions to seek roles to further her acting skills. She also goes behind the scenes and is currently producing a short film that can be seen on her website. SEASON OF THE WITCH

Movie Review by David Pinson

As far as midnight movie monsters go the witch has been neglected. The vampire is glorified today as herds of teenage girls scream wildly for the boys in Twilight. The zombie receives new fame with Woody Harrelson cracking skulls in Zombieland. However, the witch has to settle for Neve Campbell in The Craft and Bette Midler’s obnoxious cackle in Hocus Pocus. The Blair Witch Project turned out to be a hit maybe because the dastardly witch is a no-show and not seen for one second on the screen. The time is ripe for the witch’s shot at redemption and unfortunately, the new Nick Cage vehicle Season of the Witch is not the film to deliver it. 23

Set in the middle ages when the world is a dark and muck-covered, Cage plays Behman, a grizzled veteran of the Crusades who has shed enough blood in the name of God. He abandons the war along with his equally grizzled counterpart, Felson (Ron Perlman), and aimlessly roams the land searching for a new beginning. The men stumble upon a filth-infested fortress that is in the grip of the Black Plague and are instantly recognized as deserters and thrown in the dungeon. There they meet a young girl (Claire Foy) who has been imprisoned because the monks believe her to be a witch who has brought the Black Death to the people.

Behman and Felson are brought to the bedside of the dying, boil-covered Cardinal D’Ambrose (an unrecognizable Christopher Lee) who offers the men freedom if they are willing to transport the girl to a nearby Abby that possesses the only copy of a sacred book that contains incantations that will destroy the witch. Behman agrees but believing the girl innocent, demands that she be given a fair trial and not burned at the stake. They throw together a motley crew (a swindler, a monk and a young alter boy who has no business sporting a mustache) and begin the journey. It soon becomes apparent that the callow girl might, in fact, be hiding her true nature and the prospect of the men making their destination becomes more and more grim.

24 THE G.O.O.D.S MAGAZINE February 2011

Season of the Witch suffers from an in-

consistent tone that plagues the film throughout. Director Dominic Sena (Gone in 60 Seconds and Whiteout) goes to great lengths in the first few reels of the film to establish the time and setting of the picture, needlessly presenting dates and locations for the formless action on the Crusade’s battlefield. This seems to be an attempt to present the film as period accurate but then Sena defeats his intentions by sprinkling the film with cheap one-liners that merely succeed at making the viewer roll his/her eyes. Nicholas Cage struggles with the material and never fully gels his character. While attempting to speak with the “Sword and Sorcery” elocution that is common with these sorts of films, the cadence of his delivery is constantly off and awkward. With action films Cage’s believability is hit (The Rock, Con Air) and miss (Knowing, Ghost Rider) and Season of the Witch is a big misfire that might have been strictly monetarily motivated. His heart just doesn’t seem to be in it. The film does deliver a few jumps and chills but they are few and far apart. Ron Perlman is a joy and fully embraces the material. The movie would have been better if he was made the central figure. The effects vary wildly as well from great makeup on the plague victims to sub par computer effects (that make up the majority of the films climax). Season of the Witch is dim bulb entertainment and sadly the witch has to hang her pointed hat and except her status as a second tier villain once again.

South of the Border By Donna Wilkins

26 THE G.O.O.D.S MAGAZINE February 2011

If you are looking for something different to do, how about taking a trip south of the border? Family and friends will give you many reasons not to travel to Mexico. They start with the potential dangers. If that doesn’t scare you, they move to the contaminated water. If you are still not afraid, they’ll tell you an urban legend that goes something like: “They’ll spike your drink. You’ll pass out. They’ll steal your kidney.” I’m not saying that these things can’t happen, but the possibilities are slim. I can tell you one good reason to visit our amigos south of the border - la comida (the food). Not only is it authentic and delicious, but inexpensive to boot. 27

Recently, some friends and I left So Cal at 9:30am and arrived at our destination in Ensenada at 11:30am. Upon arrival we checked into Hotel Cortez which is located on the main strip. It is quaint, clean and reasonably priced. We picked up our keys and headed out to lunch. Who would not be starving after traveling for two hours? We arrived at Restaurante El Charro, on Av. Lopez Mateos N. 454; a medium size, adobe style restaurant with traditional wooden furniture. While my friends ordered a traditional meal of enchiladas, rice and beans, I was mesmerized by the women making the fresh tortillas. I began to drool as I watched the roasted chicken turning in the oven. I was sold. I ordered the ½ chicken, fries and tortillas. I was very happy with my choice. The chicken fell off the bone and melted in my mouth. The fries were hot and fresh and the corn tortillas were muy delicioso. My bill came to $7.00 which included a soda. After an hour or so of sight-seeing, we stopped at a local café to refuel. I ordered tea and my friend ordered hot chocolate, which we needed to tide us over until our next meal. At 6:30 it was finally time to head out to dinner. This was the best part of the entire trip. The piece de resistance. We headed to a restaurant called Manzanilla, on Teniente

28 THE G.O.O.D.S MAGAZINE February 2011

Azueta #139 in Ensenada. It is located off the beaten path close to the entrance of the port. They are open Wednesday through Saturday 12pm to 12am. It’s a place that someone would have to tell you about, or read the great positive reviews on the web. It is nestled behind a wooden gate. As soon as you walk through the huge, double wooden doors, you know you’ve discovered a hidden gem. The atmosphere is one of a funky, hip museum that which you have been invited to an opening. Everything from the pictures on the walls, the furniture, the bar (which we were told was made in the 1920’s and a gift from San Diego) were amazing pieces of art. Chandeliers hung from the high wooden ceiling radiating a rose hue over the entire restaurant. The rectangular windows were framed with heavy, dark wood which matched the tables. Although the eatery has high ceilings and cement floors, it’s not a large and still has a warm atmosphere. There are four large double tables. We arrived early, compared to Mexican time, and there was only one couple seated at the bar. Whether you were seated at a table or the bar this could be a romantic venue for anyone. Since there weren’t many people, this was good for us, because we were able to monopolize our waitress Danna’s time. She apologized for her limited English (which was by no means limited) and was happy to answer our questions.

She told us that the head chef and owner is Benito Molina who is originally from Mexico City, but went to culinary school in the United States. She asked what we’d like to drink. I wasn’t sure what I was going to order for my entrée, but ordered the house red, Valle de Guadalupe. It was delicious. She said it was 80% Zinfandel and 20% Cabernet and I believe she said Molina designed it himself. While he was not there that evening she explained that the chefs were trained under him. They did not disappoint.

Next, we each ordered the same entree, the grilled, smoked fish of the day with puree garbanzo beans, a nice alternative to rice or potatoes, and chotes and cubed squash. My mouth was filled with a symphony of tastes. Because it is all locally grown it was fresh and tasted great.

Danna first brought us canapés of flaked sturgeon with tomato, chili, garlic and herbs on toast. From the first bite I knew my palate was in for a wonderful awakening. Next, we ordered the Portobello mushrooms. They were huge and covered with cheese and herbs. It will power not to order another round.

If you have time, and like nouvelle Mexican cuisine prepared by one of Mexico’s top chefs, take a trip across the border and eat at Manzanilla. If you are up for a more intimate atmosphere try one of the many small, reasonably priced and unique family owned restaurants. Either way you’ll experience a myriad of flavor in every bite!

This would be considered fine dining anywhere in the world. Including a tip, my bill was under $30.00. Este es mi nuevo restaurante favorite, which means this is my new favorite restaurant!

THE G.O.O.D.S MAGAZINE February 2011

TRENDS:

A Comeback of Great Lengths For Spring and Summer of 2011, we are jumping to greater lengths, in a literal sense. Military inspired looks and destroyed denim captured our closets in 2010, but this year a more softer, feminine side of fashion will take us on a trip down memory lane. 1970’s inspiration was made quite apparent on the runways this season. Marc Jacobs being one of the designers who definitely hit the mark, along with Derek Lam and the ever-fabulous Diane von Furstenberg . Wide-legged trousers, maxi skirts and dresses, bell bottoms, and wide-brimmed hats are the staples of the season. Let us not forget the extravagant hippie reminiscent prints as well. The neutrals that we coveted in 2010 are also sticking around, so not to worry, just in more whimsical silhouettes and accompanied by a force field of color. Those a bit weary of the 70's comeback, sure, it had its hits and misses, but doesn't every decade? I mean, we did manage to make it out fairly respectably with our return to the 80's. And that's saying a lot. The practicality of the look is wonderful and hardly fussy or body conscious like the worries that previously overcame us with bodycon dresses and ultra-high hems. It's just the matter of getting it right. A solid, breezy button down paired with a hot, floor length floral maxi skirt, medium wash bell bottoms worn with an ivory crochet tank, it's all casual 70's elegance at its best. Whether you are down for a blast into the past full throttle or a modern mix up, it is your take on the trend, so personalize it. Ultimately, the 70's were about expressing yourself, so why not borrow that mindset along with a floppy hat!

Trends

It's never too early to start stocking up on warm-weather gear for Spring and Summer, and designers like Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors have great lineups for the upcoming season. Though these collections have lots of goodies to peruse, here are three must-have looks chock-full of looser, breezier shapes:

NEUTRAL STATEMENTS

URBAN PASTELS

Whatever your style, lightweight neutrals are sure to be a huge compliment to your Spring 2011 palette, be it gray tops, cream blouses, or dark leather shorts. But don’t feel confined to the monotone scheme - If you think neutral shades will wash you out, spice up your look with another color up top like

Pale yellow, mint green and candy reds - pastel colors are Spring’s greatest . Color up top with sugary shades of bright reds and blues, or make a statement with sheer chiffons and flowy knits.

Celebrity Looks

Trend 2: Fur Coats |

Mr. Kanye West! My goodness, I am guessing it was really cold outside? Here he is photographed leaving his hotel wearing a massive fur coat. I am sure he could care less about what PETA has to say about his outfit. Remember a faux fur is the best option when coat shopping and looks amazing too! Paula Abdul, looked dazzling and cozy in her white fur coat. Her outfit is very simple but the coat makes the overall look very sassy!

Trend 1: Boots | Halle Berry,

is a fan of the simple blackwedged rain boot as seen here. This spring, boots will be a popular must have! “Rain, rain go away” we sing…but not for too long, so we can step out in the rain in style! Maybe rubber, black-wedges aren’t your style? That’s fine. Try Pixie and Nick’s take on the rain boot. Here we see Model Pixie Geidof and Presenter Nick Grimshaw on a stroll. Pay close attention to her boots: leather, lace-up, combat boots. Boots like this work exceptionally well with either a pair of skinny jeans leggings! Pair them with nothing else!

64 THE G.O.O.D.S MAGAZINE February 2011

Trend 3: Leathers

“It girl” Zoe Saldana, pictured here in an edgy leather cocktail dress. She toned down the biker look by dressing it up with burgundy heels and clutch to give the dress a feminine feel and splash of color. Maybe Raven Symone should have tried to do the same? Here the actress is seen in a ruffled coat over black leather pants and bra. Wait! I never said that all of these celebrities would be good examples of 2011’s Spring Fashion Trends. Just remember that leather is not for everyone! Know your body type and wear the leather in the right places!

Trend 4: Stripes|

Ex-Pro Wrestler turned actress, Stacey Keiber, probably feels really laid back in her striped tank and skinny jeans and only took two seconds to get ready but to us her look is fun and flirty! Stripes have the power to upgrade a simple look to a loud attention getting look. There is a lot of strength in stripes so they can be tricky. Stripes too must must be worn in the right places! If you wear a striped skirt, that is where eyes will be drawn too.

Warning! Our next fashion trend is definitely a fashion trend don’t! Bai Ling! We love you‌but seriously? A dark choppy cut with orange strips? Looks like she has taken this trend too far! She currently is in the works of producing her own fashion line. With hair like this will you trust her taste? We wish much luck to her!

Designer Spring 20 Makeup to Fit Any 27

011

y

A new year, a fresh start, and a luminous spring is right around the corner for fashionistas everywhere. Spring is the season to show off the vibrant new you and the best way to achieve this is with a new spring look. Luckily I have scoped out a plethora of designer inspired palettes to accentuate your eyes and brighten your complexion. With a little help from Dolce & Gabbana and Chanel, I have found a way to get the runway look with colours that fit your budget. Dolce & Gabbana's Spring 2011 Makeup collection titled "Secret Garden" enlightens the eyes with warm nudes, cool neutrals, light pinks, and even turquoise. Stefano Gabbana has said the collection was "inspired by lush gardens unique to Sicily" and brings an "aura of romance" to every woman's face. The collection has been debuted at Saks Fifth Avenue stores and well as online. Though the name Dolce & Gabbanna alone sets the bar for other designers around the world and is known for its outstanding quality, you can achieve many of the looks that Secret Garden brings without breaking the bank. One of my favorite pieces of this collection is the four-shadow palette set that includes off-white, pink rose, sea foam green, and gray tones. Ulta Beauty stores and www.ulta.com always carry drugstore brands as well as designer brand makeup at a cheaper price than department stores. Prestige Cosmetics has created a "Beauty Bar Eyeshadow Palette" in spring colours that define yet highlight your lids. The colours available for this palette include the pastels in Secret Garden and well as a charcoal gray to define the corners of your eyes. Combining the “Chameleon” and “Illuminate” Beauty Bar palettes will give you the light spring look you’re going for. Though it may not last as long on your eyes, it will give you that same luscious spring look and at only $3.19 per palette, anyone can afford to copy this designer look! 73

74

The most noticeable part of the Secret Garden collection is the diversity of the pink and red tones to bring an "aura of romance" to every woman's face as Gabbana set out to do. However, Too Faced Cosmetics has achieved something very similar with their "Romantic Eye Classic Beauty Shadow Collection" available at Ulta. Its combination of tans, pinks, and shimmering golds create the romantic inspired shades and at a $73.00 value, you can purchase this collection at Ulta for only $35.00. I have many shadows from Too Faced cosmetics and the quality and prismatic colours they carry make their beauty products well worth the money. Moving on to Chanel's Spring 2011 Makeup Collection: Les Perles de Chanel, an even lighter natural glow is exhibited with these colours. Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel was an extremely famous pioneering designer who is known for quoting "a girl should be two things: classy and fabulous". Coco Chanel was nearly always seen wearing her timeless pearls which is why it makes sense that her collection is comprised of pearlized shades of black and white accented by corals and pinks. One of the four-shadow palettes in this collection has chocolate brown, sea foam green, baby blue, and light coral; a perfect combination of pastels and darks. Though you may not be able to pay full price for Chanel, you can always improvise with other cosmetics with very similar shades. I have tried their AqualumiĂŠre High Shine Gloss in pink; a part of the spring collection. Though I loved the water-light look it embraced, I wanted to find something similar for less than $27.00. This is when I discovered PUR Minerals' "Petal Pout Lip Gloss Collection". For $28.00, you get four of these mineral lip glosses in all of the pastel shades corresponding to spring flowers. It glides on smoothly, without feeling extremely thick. It looks even better when applied; the same water-light look and you get four glosses instead of one! You can find this PUR Minerals product on their website or at any Ulta Beauty location. THE G.O.O.D.S MAGAZINE February 2011

L'OrĂŠal Paris has invented a "One Sweep Eyeshadow Kit" for only $9.99 with nearly identical colors as those depicted in Secret Garden and Les Perles de Chanel. The idea is to create a complete eye look in one sweep. The best part is that you can choose the spring colors that complement your natural eye color in natural or playful tones. Let's face it, even though turquoise and sea foam green are what's new and hot for spring, these shades are not meant for every complexion and eye color. Look for this "One Sweep Eyeshadow Kit" at your local drugstore or at www.loreal.com. Whether you can splurge on the these designer collections or if you're trying a replica color from a drugstore beauty shelf, all that matters is that you feel fresh and luminous in your own skin. Between the warm nudes, cool neutrals, pastel blushes, and pale turquoises, make sure you wear the colours that fit your natural palette best and I guarantee you will feel beautiful and ready to take on Spring 2011!

CELEB FRAGRANCES TO WEAR THIS SPRING

by: Lauren Mercado

Jessica, Britney, Fergie, Christina, Diddy, and Katy. There is a nearly infinite list of stars with their names on a fragrance line. Everyone from Celine Dion to 50 Cent has loaned their names to a perfume. Well…now we can add Rihanna to the list of celebrity-turned-moguls because this spring RiRi’s perfume Reb'l Fleur (which is tattooed on her neck) will be avaliable at Macy’s. It seems in Hollywood your noone unless you have an “original” mixture of flowers and vanilla under your diamond-studded belt. When the seasons change we believe your scent should to. We did some “nosey” investigating and put the fragrances to the test. We picked the best celebrity frangrances to help you find the scent you’ll love to carry. 1. A part of Mariah Carey’s Precious Collection released in 2008, Luscious Pink is still on top as spring fragrance choice . It is romantic, feminine and a true ode to the season. Tones of floral, wood and Bellini release an aroma that makes you feel fresh and ready to take on spring! Mariah adds her style to the bottle with a butterfly lid. A butterfly is her signature and we’re going to be making Luscious Pink ours! Available at Macys.

2. Are you sure you didn’t mean Gold Rush? We have struck gold with Beyonce’s newest fragrance Heat Rush! A follow up of her debut fragrance, Beyonce describes this scent as “feminine and sexy, fresh and beautiful”. This is a spring/summer fragrance to die for! This fragrance is a blend of fruits (mango, cherry, passion fruit…) and florals (tiger orchid, mango blossom, hibiscus). Nothing screams a change of the season then a brazilian beach inspired scent by Beyonce.

3. Daring and sexy, Rihanna’s first fragrance Reb’l Fleur is impressive. Inspired by her life in Barbados, fruits are key (red berries, plums, peaches) with floral and warm bases makes this scent very sexy. Rihanna wants her fragrance “to linger and leave a sexy memory”. This sexy island scent is perfect for spring and even better for summer! Definitely worth the money! Plus look how cute the bottle is! A stiletto heel? We love it! Available at Macys

4. The Beckams have taken over the fragrance game with their empire of scents. For spring we love Beckham Signature Story for men. The top notes are wild basil, violet leaf and pineapple a heart of orange flower, rosemary and lavender with a manly cedarwood finish. A scent that is fresh yet powerful. This scent sticks and doesn’t fade. Definiety a must have this spring! Available at www.Beckham-fragrances.com 77

THE GREEN HORNET green hornet

Movie Review by David Pinson

It appears that this superhero thing has been hit at all angles and every possible approach exhausted. Take Batman for an example. The campy television show of the late 60’s gave way to Tim Burton’s classic, straightforward approach, which was followed by the revisionist rebirth of The Dark Knight helmed by Christopher Nolan. Add to that the newsreel serials from the 30’s, Joel Schumacher’s neon coated demolition projects (the hideous Batman and Robin) and the Scooby Doo guest spots and all you have left to cover is parody. Now we have a big screen version of The Green Hornet to turn over that last stone. While Seth Rogen and the boys try to be taken seriously and achieve acceptance as legitimate action heroes, Hornet is mostly imitation that plays closely to spoof. Instead of embracing the similarities to other hero franchises and creating something new, the film basks in its familiarity making for an extremely average and predictable experience. All in 3D, of course.

Brit Reid (Rogen) is a spoiled rich kid who is the heir apparent to a media empire located in crimeridden Los Angeles. His father (Tom Wilkinson) is a hard-nosed, successful man who wants Brit to reach his full potential so that one day he can step into his shoes and run the family newspaper. But Brit just wants to party. Brit doesn’t want obligations and responsibilities. But when his father dies from an allergic reaction to a bee sting, Brit’s wants and needs change. Reaching his potential (this is a major thematic element) quickly becomes his main focus. Brit is still a selfish brat and when his morning coffee isn’t to his liking, he finds the one responsible. That would be Kato (Jay Chou), a martial arts expert that worked in his deceased father’s garage and is whiz at making many things, the least of which is a cup of coffee. After Kato shows Brit some of the wonderful modifications he has made to the Batmobile, I mean Black Beauty, (bullet proof windows, rockets and machine guns mounted), Brit decides they should fight crime and do good by the citizens of Los Angeles. But instead of being perceived as heroes, they will be mistaken for villains. Why? I don’t really know. Call it an at-

tempt at originality. Violence follows and the Hornet and Kato quickly catch the attention of Chudnofsky (Inglorious Basterds’ Christoph Waltz), a bad man with an inferiority complex that cause harm to those around him. A power struggle begins which isn’t pretty. Can the Green Hornet overcome the Villain? Will he reach his full potential? And why is Cameron Diaz in this movie? Seth Rogen co-wrote this with his usual partner, Evan Goldberg (Superbad, Pineapple Express) and I respect the effort. Mr. Rogen is obviously trygreen horneting to take his career in a different direction and establish himself as a versatile actor. The problem is he’s the same exact character in The Green Hornet that he’s been in every other film on his resume. It’s distracting and is a major reason why things don’t really come together. Waltz as the quirky criminal is underused and underdeveloped. His scenes are flat and do not deliver what seems to be intended. Chou is a great Kato, however, and he does Bruce Lee proud (Lee was the original Kato from the 60’s T.V. show). Most of the films bright moments involve Kato’s flying feet and acrobatic leaps. The 3D effect is best used in these action moments and Chou gives the film what life it has.

One last Batman parallel: In 1989, Tim was a far out, visionary director that seemed an odd choice to direct a major blockbuster like Batman. The same could be said here, with director Michel Gondry coming from the indie film world and being known for original and bizarre work. With films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep, Gondry is a master at unconventional imagery and surreal storytelling. Here, much like Rogen, he is out of his element and only shows glimpses of his talent. With the action, Gondry has a few new elements to show us and some of the transitions from scene to scene are brilliantly presented but these are too far between. From fantastic to flat, The Green Hornet is just upsetting.

ds Hailing from the perpetual summer on steroids of San Diego, 80’s synth pop band LESANDS connotates a dreamy summer haze with their warm and darling EP “Sweet Skin”. Together since March 2010, the trio of Austin Taylor Tirado, Joel Plotnik and Nik Ewing, all California natives draw influence from an eclectic assortment of post punk and late 50s early 60s pop girl groups such as The Ronettes and The Crystals. While their influences may be diverse, the sounds of LESANDS fuse wonderfully together for an infectious and dreamy dance gems to be replayed again and again. Though relatively new to the scene, 2011 promises to bring big things as the group heads to SXSW later in March beginning a national tour.
