Fun Fashion on a Budget

By Courtney Dade, All Frills Beauty and Accessories

Though 2013 has been a year of economic recovery, many people are still feeling the pinch in their wallets with the upcoming holiday season. Necessity sparks creativity in most situations, and looking good is no difference. One of the best ways to create the perfect look for less, is by focusing on the details with killer accessories

WORK WITH WHATCHA GOT! Before you even start to get your holiday “me” budget together, go shopping in your closet! It’s the best place for you to start. Often times at the beginning of a new season, we forget about the treasure we have hanging in the back of the closet. You can also mix and match your clothing in a different way than you have in the past to create a whole new look. Knowing what you already have will tell you what you need to get. Better yet, it will benefit if you have girlfriends that wear the same size, shop in each other’s closets. One of the best parts of accessorizing your current wardrobe, is to channel different types of inspiration in your quest for a new look. Here are some great sources of inspiration as you revamp your wardrobe without having to buy new clothes.

THE SPIRIT OF NATIVE AMERICA You can always count on basic earth tones making their way back into the cold weather season. Browns, greens, blacks, and beige are always favorites of retailers and shoppers alike. But don’t get bogged down by the muted mood of the season, you can channel some of the Native American spirit of Thanksgiving with jewelry made of beads, thread and wood jewelry. And don’t forget to take a walk on the wild side by bringing animal print accessories into your look, especially if you’re nervous about wearing animal print clothing.

FABULOUS FAUX LOOKS Just like one of my favorite Prince songs, diamonds and pearls are still huge winners in your special occasion arsenal. Don’t be put off by a small budget if you’re looking to make a big impact with lots of bling! You can find the shine within your budget, by looking for faux pearls, rhinestones, and other imitation gems. If you’re going for a big presence at your holiday parties or if you want to blind people on the dance floor at your New Year’s Party, consider a large rhinestone cocktail ring. You can also pick out different pieces with Swarovski crystals, which come in a variety of colors and pick up light in an extraordinary way.

GLASS FOR MORE THAN A TOAST

One of the best sellers in my online boutique, All Frills Beauty and Accessories (www. allfrillsbeauty.com), are beautiful necklaces made with Murano blown glass from Italy. It’s surprisingly inexpensive, but has so many amazing colors that work perfectly for all of your less formal events. There are several styles and brands of simple glass earrings and necklaces that are light but will add a touch of chic delicacy to your outfit. Be cautious when purchasing glass charms for bracelets, since they often crack or shatter if you’re doing anything other than sitting like a Christmas tree all day.

Remember, purchasing fun fashion jewelry and exploring different fashion looks is a great way to join in the holiday spirit with flare for almost nothing. You can revamp your entire wardrobe for well under $100 by getting a few different pieces that will go with several different outfits. Most importantly, have some guilt-free fun this holiday shopping for yourself. Underneath It All By Fredricka Fonta

The average woman spends 2 years standing in front of her closet looking for something to wear… When I first saw this fact I couldn’t believe it, two years of time on choosing what to wear? Oh well I said, ‘you gotta pay the cost, to be the beauty boss’. I thought to myself “that’s not really a negative thing; it takes time to look good”. As I came down off of my diva moment, I realized that maybe there is more to it than we may think. As long as I can remember the covers of magazines have had stories about how to look your best, what make-up colors are in for the season, how to spice up your love life with a new hair style, and so on and so forth. All the magazines and advertisements have always focused on telling us that looking good equates to feeling good and having a better life. Part of that is most definitely true. Studies show that we as humans are visually stimulated and that when our environment is nice we feel better, and when we look good we feel good. I don’t know about you, but when I’m having a good hair day, I feel I can face the world with more confidence, but what does that say about us as women? We are in an age of technology and social media reign; and seeing that what color Beyoncé dyed her hair this week goes viral, only confirms the value we have placed on outer beauty. We have made beauty the most sought after super power. Have you ever stopped and thought about the power that you possess as a woman? Just knowing that the earth is populated because of you is amazing in itself. What about the fact that if you have

children, your child can ask you where his /her green crayon is and you know that it’s on the bottom shelf to the left. You are a real life super hero. You can cook a meal, talk on the phone, and check email at the same time. There should be monuments made after you. The problem is that there are, just the wrong monuments. Have we allowed society and the media to shape our image of ourselves? Why? When we allow someone to define us, and our value, it’s usually because we don’t know our value. I remember in high school there was this one guy that every girl wanted, including me (LOL). He was gorgeous, and the girls all but did his homework in order for him to “like them”. I remember one day he told me I had nice legs, and I said “my brain looks better.” After that, I couldn’t get rid of him. The moral of that story is I demanded he show me respect and I didn’t cater to him as if he was the prize. I told him what about me I thought was special, and it was my brain. I knew my own worth. I made sure he knew that to talk to me, you couldn’t objectify me. For centuries women have fought for equal rights and respect, but the minute some man tells us were pretty we feel validated. We have to pick a side and stand on it. Do we want to be sex objects, or sex objects who are finding the cure for cancer? There is nothing wrong with making sure you look great. Being able to render a man senseless because of how we walk is also one of our super powers and we need

to embrace that, but not only that. We have to retrain ourselves to knowing that we are worth more than what someone thinks, what has happened in our past, and more than how fast we can bat our fake eyelashes. So many times in life, hurts and pains make us feel less confident. Instead of dealing with those hurts, we focus our energy on something else. Unfortunately, for us as women, we turn our attention to the outer instead of fixing the inner. Look at how many times we may have a bad day, and go get “retail therapy”. We even have made a name for it. Will buying a new dress really solve the problem? We need to learn to fix the cause of the problem and then go buy a new pair of red bottoms. Buy them because we want to, not because we think it will cure the blues. When is the last time you invested in a class you want to take on a new subject, instead of spending money on a bikini wax? When is the last time you went to the store without any make-up? When was the last time

you let your guy see you with rollers in your hair? Are you less valuable because you have hot rollers in, does that somehow diminish your worth and make you less beautiful? God forbid. When is the last time you read a book instead of obsessing over what nail polish to wear to dinner with friends? We have to start to focus on ourselves, our real selves. The self who cries every time she watches “Beaches”, the one who can and will eat a whole pan of brownies and not feel guilty. Where is the woman who can quote Shakespeare better than a professor of literature at Berkeley? Where is that beautiful woman? I challenge each of us to go into this New Year ready to fall in love with ourselves. We must choose what we want to be special about us; we must set our own standard of beauty. Underneath all the Mac cosmetics, bronzer and control top panty hose is the real you. Let’s work on beautifying our insides, and then our outsides will have no choice but to shine.

Celebrate the Holidays

in style By Charisma Events & Consulting Team

Need some inspiration for throwing a winter soirée or impressing all of your relatives when they come over this holiday season? Then you are in the right place! We have some tips and ideas for planning the best party of the season. If you are having the whole family over for the holidays, try something family friendly such as decorating gingerbread houses! The kids will love the activity and everyone can spend some quality time together. Another trending idea is to have a cookie exchange! Have everyone bring two-dozen of their favorite cookies to the gathering. Then you go around and trade cookies with everyone and go home with many new cookies to try! Fun for you and your taste buds! Trying to go for more of an elegant, up-scale party? Try having a cocktail party with many treats to explore! Have different appetizers such as crab puffs or artichoke-parmesan crostini spread on the outskirts of the room. Also, have a small bar

with champagne and a signature holiday drink to serve! This will get people moving around the room and mingling with other partygoers! A hot trend this winter is to include a hot chocolate bar with different toppings such as marshmallows and peppermints for people to customize their warm drink – maybe even throw in whipped cream vodka for some adult fun! Don’t feel like you need to stick with the classic rich reds and deep greens for your décor! Make your party like a winter wonderland with light blues and whites– have guests go with the theme by dressing in similar colors! Or spice up the end of the year with gold and champagne pink accents for the New Year’s party your friends will be talking about well into 2014! We hope this gets your wheels turning! Have a safe Holiday season and enjoy your friends and family! Happy Planning!

BEAT HOLIDAY

2013 AND READY FOR

2014

By Gi’ Juan Scott

Ready or not the holidays are here and the year has almost come to an end. I hope you are ready! I had the honor of being able to travel to New York during Fashion Week this Fall and from the dramatic, shapely and colorful cat eyes to the intensely pigmented lips, it wasn’t hard to tell that the 90’s grunge look has definitely made a comeback! Stay fashion forward and current throughout the holidays and into 2014 by adding gorgeous pops of glitter to your styles to give that Hollywood Glamour look with an everyday feel. 2014 is glitter, shimmer and shine! It is all about eyes that sparkle in a myriad of ways. Now I know glitter eye shadow can seem pretty pre-tween or maybe even sheer, but some of the looks that have been showcased are mature enough even for those of us who wore glitter body gel in the 90’s (lol). Honestly, glitter can be put in the “advanced” section of makeup application. However, don’t fret, with a couple of tutorials from our Motives website or YouTube, even the most complex application can become easy with a little practice. Motives Cosmetics by Loren Ridinger released their Holiday Quads, one of which is shown, called Late Night which includes matte, glitter and shimmer for limitless possibilities going from the office, to happy hour or a holiday party. In this ‘get the look’ picture it is paired with the Motives Glitter Pot in Aspire and the Motives Luxe Precision Eyeliner in Jet Black. This can all be purchased online at www.beautywithgigi.com. Holiday 2013 is all about nude palettes with the red lipstick from bright reds to wine stained and even purple plum are just a few of the fabulous must haves this season. It’s a classic meets grunge look that has interestingly taken on a new elegance which you must have this season. XOXO, GIGI

How to Exude Confidence in Your Next Soiree By Keisha D. Hunter, Social Media Enthusiast, Bizybuilder.com

Of all the topics I could choose from among a list full of topics, mostly relating to fashion, this one stood out as the one that I could tackle with the most confidence – if that was a pun, it was totally intended. I’m thinking this is going to turn into an article relating to exuding confidence not only at your next soiree, but also whenever you walk into any room whether it is filled with family, friends, or associates. Confidence can make or break a relationship and therefore an event that you are either hosting or attending, regardless of its nature. Although this may apply to both men and women, as a woman, I’m sure I am not the only one who before stepping foot outside of the door headed to an event, changes wardrobe at minimum 3 times, and that’s being generous. Why do we do it? I tend to dress according to how I feel and if I’m not feeling the outfit, I’m not feeling myself. I would go so far as to liken not having on the right outfit for the moment to walking into an interview and introducing yourself with a lame handshake. People can tell by your energy when you are uncomfortable, when you aren’t sure. So I change until I feel good about what I see in the mirror. Depending on the type of event, perhaps this process took place in your favorite boutique or department store until you made a choice that was perfect for the occasion. Therefore, the first lesson is, give yourself enough time to change a few times and don’t let your significant other or friend rush your process. We’ve all heard the cliché, “if you fail to plan, you may as well plan to fail.” When it comes to an event, this rings on the extreme side of true. I’ve produced my share of events, both successful and unsuccessful and the best advice I can give is to have a plan B and C especially when the success of your soiree is dependent upon others.

Let’s face it, if you’re running a one-man show, this soiree better be at your home, and it better be a small intimate event. I suppose that would be considered a gathering though, wouldn’t it? Allow enough planning time so that the details of your event are locked in at least 2 months prior to the day of the event. You want things to run smoothly and you want to be prepared when they don’t; avoid situations where you are running around crazy making things right. You don’t want to sweat out that perfect outfit that you chose especially for your soiree and you don’t want that fabulous makeup to be overshadowed by stress on your face. If you are confident, your soiree will exude the same. Perhaps this last piece of advice is actually more of a life lesson. Your confidence will be bolstered when you take time out to learn who you are. When you learn that you are the only you and made perfectly, no matter what you are wearing, regardless of how you’ve painted your face,

in spite of the shoes on your feet, apart from any disaster that befalls your soiree, you can hold your head high and walk with confidence. Each of us has a talent or a purpose that screams brilliance. I recommend taking out time to find out what drives you, what brings out your passion. There is nothing more confident than passion; it will shine through from the inside out and cause people to gravitate towards the beauty of who you are. If things don’t go all the way right, because you understand that you are great nevertheless, your guests will let you make it – at least once or twice. J For events in particular, you will know after the first few events whether or not you have a knack for event planning or producing. You will know if you can stand in the face of pressure and survive without losing any hair, without having one sip too much of your favorite adult beverage. Which leads me to one last tip – enjoy yourself, it’s a party! Your smile and warm welcome will scream confidence.

Kurvy fall fashion By Brandee J

Finally the 90 degree weather in San Diego has come and gone and it is time for my favorite fashion season: Fall!! Fall fashions bring back boots, furs, sweaters, and more; everything you need to celebrate the Holiday Season! I know that typically big fashion houses give us the annual trends and hot looks, but unfortunately most of those trends do not really work for curvy women. That is why I am here to bring you the 2013 Fall fashion style guide, specifically designed with the curvy woman in mind! Fashion should be a fun way to express yourself and your personal style no matter the season. Curvy women have different aspects of our body we need to consider when choosing clothes, shoes, and accessories. As a happy curvy woman myself, I understand that better than anyone. 2013 is the year to try something different. The theme for the 2013 Fall season is BOLD! Yes, be bold with your wardrobe this holiday season! Here are the 2013 holiday fashion BOLD tips specifically for curvy women!

Shoes and Heels Color

To make the Sweetheart Dress and Textured Dress POP more pair them up with hot red heels and red accessories. For example, the Levity Angie Suede Pump from DSW can take this dress to the next level!

Color can definitely be BOLD and color floral dresses are hot this Holiday season! I do not mean just solid colors either. More and more designers are getting BOLDER with curvy fashions and providing us with more options and colors than ever before.

Handbags Another great item to set off the 2013 Holiday Fashion season is the handbag. Handbags and purses can add the finishing touch to any outfit. But do not just go with any normal and plain black or white purse. Continue to have all eyes on you with the Night Vision purse from www.JustFab.com. Now your holiday fashion season is complete from day to night!

Black Dress A holiday season is not complete with the famous black dress! This is the type of sexy black dress that you are able to wear to an office holiday party and also turn around and wear to happy hour. A good form fitting black dress goes a long way this holiday season and can be worn with either knee high boots or heels. One store that is offering a number of great black dresses options this holiday season is Torrid.

Textured V-Neck Dress $58.50

Casual Holiday Look

Lace Yoke Illusion Sweetheart Dress $69

Jeans, yes jeans, can be a curvy girl’s best friend. But they must be the RIGHT pair of jeans! As curvy women finding the right pair of jeans can be a major problem because of our body shapes but I have two solutions for this issue: PZI Jeans. This is THE jean for curvy women, and they offer a number of designs and fits to go with any body shape. Epic Acid Red Skinny Jeans from PZI Jeans will give you the BOLD look and also turn heads! The jeans hug your curves just right and you can also dress them up with a nice white or cream blouse and a pair of gold heels for a night on the town. They are also priced well for what you get at only $79.00. If you want to go with a more settled look for the holidays the Iconic Studded Jean from PZI Jeans will work for you too! These light/medium denim color jeans are lined on the side with stones to give you a BOLD but classic holiday look. You can also pair these jeans with a white, black, or turquoise blouse. These jeans retail at $120.00. You can purchase both of these items at www.pzi.com. We will also be offering these options and more beginning February 2014 at www.kurvyinc.com! Remember the 2013 Holiday Season is the time to be BOLD! Visit www.KurvyLife.com for more fashion tips and more or curvy women. Until next time, Stay Kurvy and Fashionable! www.thegoodsmag.co

Tis The Season to Bling

By Johntae Henderson

With the holiday season near, there are many trends to look forward to. One in particular is the “Bling” of a statement necklace giving you an opportunity to stand out from the rest. A statement necklace can be dressed up or dressed down depending on the look you are trying to obtain. There are different colors of bling outside of the traditional clear stones and you are guaranteed to be a show stopper upon enter the room sporting your statement necklace. You may even want to give the gift of making a statement this Christmas and a necklace that needs no introduction would be a perfect gift or stocking stuffer. If you are one who knows the value of shopping and supporting small businesses, there is a quaint little boutique filled with exquisite pieces that will make your shopping for that special statement necklace a breeze this holiday season. Based in Atlanta, GA, Wrist Soirée offers custom accessories that will leave you speechless and have others admiring your style. Lakietha Duncan, owner of this dazzling boutique initially started off only designing and making bracelets that were eyecatching and fun to wear, hence the name “Wrist Soirée”. However, over time her customer base began to grow tremendous and her customers started requesting items other than bracelets. To meet the demands of her customers Lakietha started to experiment with other pieces. After a few test pieces, she quickly realized that people loved to custom neklaces just as much as they loved her bracelets. Wrist Soirée is definitely the place to shop for all your Holiday Sparkle needs. SHOP WWW.WRISTSOIREE.COM

Not Your Mama’s Centerpieces By Sylvia Jaimes Floral Design

PHOTO CREDITS // FLORALS Sylvia Jaimes Floral Design SET DESIGN The Posh Knot RENTALS Farm Table and More, Concepts Event Design, Teal Green Event Design

What a great season with its natural colors of nature all around. This is the time when the whiff of turkey and pumpkin spice pie is in the air. You can hear the festivities in the joyful laughter coming from the inside of each home with family and friends getting together to reminisce and thank for another year together. This is the best time to let our loved ones know they are special by welcoming them with a beautiful floral arrangement that says “I’m happy you’re here” maybe in the entrance, on the dinner table or in there room if they are staying for the night. Every holiday I like to do something nontraditional and get out of the box of course always using all the basics of nature for the season. Even though we are limited with flowers during this time, there are so many natural elements we can include that are available this time of year. I like to get into the kitchen and incorporate some of my special and most favorite items and instead of cooking them, I integrated it in my arrangements, this adds an accent of texture and uniqueness. To mention some for example are eggplant, artichoke, asparagus, fig and pumpkins. Low arrangements allow you to interact with everyone sitting in the table. If it’s a large table, repetitive arrangement throughout will look great including candles to add warmed. Below I will give you some ideas Sylvia Jaimes Floral Design likes to do for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

For the entrance a large (and tall) arrangement that will wow your guest. Maybe you have a large vase you have been trying to show off for a while, well this is your moment. Ask your florist what branches they might have available. During this season I recommend Red Berry Birch Branches, curly willow, white snow berry fresh, Holiday Red China, and one of my favorite is the magnolia tree, with leaves it looks gorgeous and very elegant. For Thanksgiving, let’s break from the traditional orange and brown, and switch a bit by using white and black for the linen and plates. This gives it a deco modern look and it freshens up things a bit. To add color be inspired by the décor and color in your home. Don’t forget that any color and style is acceptable. You can use yellow flowers if your vase, plates, or table-cloths has a trim of yellow, this will give it character and it blends it all together. I like to use color by spray-painting some pumpkins in different shades of the same color, like in aqua blue or hot pink, something completely different from what we are used to for Thanksgiving. For Christmas, you don’t have to keep it in reds and greens. Now a day there’s even fuchsia pink Christmas trees so it’s ok to ask your florist for a peacock blue arrangement these holidays, for an ultra-modern look. I like to use purples and lavenders with grey, and the glittery ornaments cannot be left out. Covering the vases in asparagus tied with silk-grey ribbon looks delightful, with the modern look of the purple flowers from purple kale to purple hydrangeas, or lavender flower. I advise you to be creative these holidays and bring the outside in your home. Take a walk around your neighborhood or just go to your back yard and look around you will notice how many natural resources we have during this season. Be proactive spray paint branches, glue glitter to leaves, or cover a vase with dried leave painted in gold.

Happy Holidays from Sylvia Jaimes, Owner and designer of Sylvia Jaimes Floral Designer

The Pulse is a full-service, multi-media for hire video marketing company specializing in producing interview style stories through video. We tell your story in a fun, hip, creative way and offer online distribution through the web, social media, tv, radio, and our affiliates/partners. We are the E News of San Diego but instead of focusing on celebrity gossip, we celebrate and focus on the amazing businesses in San Diego. We spotlight local business owners and learn about their personal story. The Pulse difference is the fact that we do an interview style video for you. Cindy & The Pulse Team will come to your business or event, try your products and services on camera, talk to some of your best clients to capture testimonials, and give your potential customers an inside view of your company. We are all about fun and we make this an interactive, natural experience. Instead of talking to a camera, you are having a real conversation with Cindy, in a relaxed setting, with a tailored set of questions to target your ideal client. With The Pulse being an authority on San Diego and being an authentic third party, we create a trust with the viewer so the business owner does not have to sell themselves on camera, we do it for them! We also work with each business to develop the story for the video, tailoring the questions and points they want to convey to the viewer while shooting the video to capture a powerful marketing piece.

Some of the packages we provide are a business spotlight video package, which gives the owner an opportunity to showcase his/her business in a quick 3-4 minute interview style video. We then offer The Red Carpet Media Package, which is great for a launch party, grand opening event, or non-profit Gala, which helps the owner step up their event in full red carpet style. This is where The Pulse is much more than a video marketing company but also media for hire. We come out, work your entire event, film it, conduct red carpet interviews or interviews with the VIPs and sponsors of the event. We also film testimonials, take professional photos of the event, and create a fabulous marketing video you can use to promote future events. The real edge we have here is our ability to stream your event Live on Face book and your website. This allows you to showcase your event in real time! No one else but news stations are doing this here. With this package we get involved in pre event promotion for the client as well as social media promotion during the event. The Buzz that we create at your event is really

phenomenal and professional. It really makes an impact on the way others see your event and adds to the overall ambiance. Our Third package is our Live With Cindy Web Show package that includes an on location shoot at the clients business so they can demonstrate services on camera as well as a sit down interview with Cindy in a studio. Footage is edited and professionally put together so that the final show/piece can be aired on Live Stream, face book, and the clients website. Exclusive promo codes are aired on the show and promoted by the Pulse. This is a very unique way to showcase your business. We love San Diego and all the amazing things to do in our city. We also love getting the story behind the fabulous entrepreneurs we have here. We are blessed to have done over 250 videos in the last 3 years we have been in business! We are also excited about a new project we are producing which is all about fashion and the boutique owners and designers in our city! This will be coming out in the beginning of 2014 so stay tuned!

ove & Lavender

avender and Vintage Glam Inspiration Shoot was born by our Love of Purple, Lavender and Vintage Glam. As a wedding stylist and designer it has been my dream for years to make our way to a Lavender Farm like Summers Past Farms for a wedding and this inspiration shoot made The Posh Knot’s dream come true. My absolute all-time favorite color since I was a young child has been purple, any shade will do, but something about the richness of eggplant purple just gives off a since of royalty and is just simply Gorgeous and that is the color palette that was chosen.

Starting with our table top design we used a beautiful dark wood farm table and benches provided by Farm Tables and More in addition to the tables the gorgeous florals were provided by Sylvia Jaimes Floral Design in which she used sophisticated deep purples, burgundy, and the softness of lavender incorporating fuchsia and red flowers for balance ,with pops of yellow to include real lemons in mercury silver cushion cut vases. Floralsthat were used are Hydrangeas, dahlias, Philinopsis, tulips, roses, kale and pearl hanging succulents for an organic approach. These flowers were perfectly paired with vintage china from Teal Green Vintage Rentals and Design and the ever so glam stationary menu cards and invites from Royal Amethyst, LLC. Our Bride and Groom were dressed to the nines in two different looks starting with the Bride who wore a Darling Ivory Lace Deep V-Cut Ceremony gown from the Alfred Angelo’s Vintage Modern collection with Lavender Chinese Laundry Shoes provided by San Diego Based Wardrobe Stylist Lauren Aiken. Lauren also provided the show stopping glamorous Reception look with a Mauve Cocktail Length Dress that surely created a timeless look. Our Groom was very dapper in his Classic Tuxedo from Friar Tux Shop. We went with a very clean black and white to give our bride the absolute shine. To complement the look Nichole Herbert used the same color palette for make-up and Jennifer D’Ann styled both of their hair to perfection with a sleek look for the Groom and whimsical curls for the bride.

The Season Of The Falling By Brandon Cheeks

The winter season is synonymous with falling. Leaves have fallen off the trees. Time fell back. Rain and snow fall from the sky. And, people tend to fall out of shape. As a personal trainer, I’ve noticed a trend that occurs at this time. From October to December, clients cancel or don’t schedule consistent workouts. I call this threemonth period the “Fall Off,” when people tend to fall out of shape. It’s a trainer’s duty to catch the fallen and get them back on track. Over the years, I’ve seen plenty of excuses why people fall out of shape during the holiday season. Maybe you’re traveling and forgot to pack workout clothes, or it may be that Mom’s peach cobbler is addictive. One reason or another, a good trainer and a disciplined client can prevent the Fall Off. Here’s a list of causes why people tend to fall, and my favorite techniques to help clients stay or get back on track:

Reason for Falling: “I’ll be out of town and can’t workout.” Fall Prevention: Be sure to pack a workout outfit. No one enjoys doing burpees or running a mile in jeans. Before your trip, research gyms/parks in the area. Most cities have gyms that offer discounted daily rates. If you can’t find one, use a park, backyard, stairwell, or parking lot/structure to enjoy a creative workout.

Reason for Falling: “I’ll be too busy. I have no time to workout.” Fall Prevention: Effective time management is critical. Plan workout times to fit into your daily schedule. Keeping workouts short and intense will ensure effectiveness, and keep you on schedule for your holiday tasks. Aim for 20-30 minutes per session. Tibatas are a great way to fit a high-intensity workout into limited time. Typical Tibata circuits last four minutes. Include two or three circuits with a warm up and a stretching routine to intensify the short workout.

Reason for Falling: “I can’t pass up on dessert.”

TIBATAS PUSH UPS (20 SECONDS) 10-SECOND REST BODY WEIGHT SQUATS (20 SECONDS) 10-SECOND REST BENCH DIPS (20 SECONDS) 10-SECOND REST BICYCLE CRUNCH (20 SECONDS)

Fall Prevention: Keep your scheduled workouts a priority! Go ahead and enjoy treats, just make sure to get that workout in, too. During the holidays we are all going to have “Oops, I shouldn’t have eaten that,” moments. Don’t panic. Just be more consistent with your workouts than your pie-eating sessions. Instead of sitting around watching television after a big family meal, plan a calorie-burning activity. Organize a scavenger hunt, play a game of charades or go for a short walk/bike ride. Do something that involves movement and/or laughter. This will assist in burning holiday meal calories. This winter, try not to become one of the fallen. Don’t cancel workout sessions; be sure to pack workout clothes when traveling; be more time efficient; and, increase the intensity of your workouts. Remember: A consistent workout schedule is critical during the holiday seasons, especially when Momma’s cobbler is calling.
