Read, Pray, Obey o, the school year is in full swing now. I want to challenge you to make this the best school year ever! How can you make that happen? Here are a few suggestions: First, read! Begin every day with God’s Word. It doesn’t matter if you are five or 100; God’s Word is a necessity in our lives. Why? Psalm 119:105 tells us that God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. How can you see where you are walking or what to avoid without a lamp and a light? His Word will even shine on our paths in the bright sunlight. Begin every day with God’s Word. Next, pray! Prayer is communication with God. Just like you talk with your family and friends, you need to talk with God. A good practice in prayer is following these six steps: 1. Praise God for who He is: Creator, Giver of Life, Provider, Father, trustworthy, and faithful. 2. Thank God for all He has done for you: clothing, food, family, home, friends, church, life, strength, and answering specific prayers. 3. Confess your sins to God. Confession means that you are agreeing with God that you have sinned against Him and that you are sorry for sinning. Have you told a lie, said bad words, treated someone unkindly, been selfish, taken something that wasn’t yours, or thought bad thoughts? Confess them to God and tell Him you are sorry. 4. Intercession. That’s a big word which simply means to pray for others. Pray for your parents, siblings, teachers, friends, and

your enemies, too. Pray for their needs to be met and for their relationship with Jesus to grow. 5. Supplication. Pray for yourself. Do you need to be kind to someone? Do you need extra money for a field trip? Do you need strength and courage because someone is bullying you? Do you need help in controlling your thoughts and actions? Ask God to help you and to meet your needs. 6. Listen. You cannot have a conversation with your friend unless you listen to what they say. How do you listen to God? You get quiet and you read His Word and listen for Him to lead you. He will! Sometimes, we are so busy listening to all the noise in this world that we cannot hear God. Just listen. So far, we have “read” and “pray.” The last step is, obey! You have to do what God says. This is so difficult sometimes. When you are tempted to be mean to someone, obey God’s Word about being kind to others. If you see others being mean to someone, remember that how you treat others is how you are treating Jesus. Are you tempted to gossip, steal, watch ungodly things, or cheat? Remember God’s Word and do it! Obey. How can you make this the best school year ever? Read, pray, and obey! This will not only make for a good school year, but it will also make for a good life: a life that is pleasing to God every day.

The 80/20 Principle MONEY MATTERS

ave you ever wondered if your hard work and daily tasks are bringing you closer to your goals? Let me introduce you to “Pareto’s Principle,” named after Italian economist and sociologist Vilfredo Pareto (18481923). Pareto’s Principle has also come to be known as the 80/20 Principle. Pareto discovered that in the natural world as well as human nature, 80 percent of efforts produced only 20 percent of productive results, while 20 percent of efforts produced 80 percent of the desired results. Here are a few examples: Pareto observed that only 20 percent of the plants in his garden produced 80 percent of his vegetables. Likewise, he observed that 80 percent of the world’s wealth is owned by 20 percent of the world’s population. And here’s the important and practical application for all of us: 20 percent of all our actions, decisions, and efforts will produce 80 percent of our results. Conversely, 80 percent of our efforts will typically produce only 20 percent of desired results. In other words, we waste a lot of time, don’t we? So consider: what are you doing everyday that honestly brings you closer to your goals? Since this is a personal finance column, think about your financial goals (assuming you have clearly written financial goals—you do, right?). What are you doing today and every day to bring you closer to your financial goals? Please don’t say you’re working to earn a paycheck—that’s a good start, but many people spend every dollar they earn and then go into debt to spend even more, so earning money by itself is not really bringing you closer to your financial goals. It’s what you do with your money that will enable you to achieve your goals. Write your financial goals, and then write a list of “action

steps” beneath each goal and map out a plan for how you will realistically and efficiently achieve these goals. For example, one goal might be “pay of entire $2,000 Visa bill in five months,” where the action steps for achieving this might include “set up auto-pay from checking account for $400 per month for next five months.” Remember that being “busy” every day is not the same as being “productive” in achieving your financial goals. In his best-selling book The Four-Hour Work Week, Tim Ferriss cautions against “inventing things to do” merely to keep us “busy” every day. Instead, we should focus daily on only one or two tasks or decisions which will truly lead to financial progress. Yes, I understand that dishes need washed, houses need cleaned, dogs need walked, and lawns need mowed. But how often do we put these tasks at the top of our to-do lists, instead of tasks that will truly improve our finances, such as opening a Roth IRA account or 529 kids’ college investment account and setting those on monthly auto-draft? Instead of checking email or social media ten times per day, why not review how much your bank is charging you every month for your checking account or overdraft fees? Or review your cell phone and TV plan to see how much you might save by switching. Twenty percent of these financially-prioritized tasks can result in an eighty percent positive swing in your finances So be sure to prioritize tasks that will move you toward your financial goals, and leave the “busy” stuff for later. Shakespeare reminds us in his most famous play Hamlet, “to be too busy is some danger.” Proverbs 18:9 cautions, “Slack habits and sloppy work are as bad as vandalism.”

Lessons in Football
eptember, for me, means football season. It means watching my Dawgs, checking out the MTSU Blue Raiders and the University of West Georgia Wolves, watching ESPN for player profiles, and re-watching my favorite football movies. Tops on my list is Facing the Giants, and the death crawl scene in that movie is one that still brings me to tears, even after watching it probably 10 or more times. Is it cheesy? Maybe a little. Is it not the best acting? Okay. I didn’t watch the film expecting Meryl Streep. I watched it expecting Jesus, and He is there. • He’s there for the down-on-his-luck coach who can’t seem to win a game. • He’s there for the childless couple that can’t get pregnant. • He’s there for the doubting David and his dad. • He’s there for the team leader who doesn’t think he has enough. • He’s there for the father and son who can’t talk without arguing. • He’s there for the Eagles who, miraculously, beat the undefeated Giants. I’ll probably pull out my favorite episode of Friday Night Lights, too: the one where the players chant, “Clear eyes. Full hearts. Can’t lose.” The four quarters of a football game are the storyline for life as a Christian, and, if you’re watching for it, it’ll speak to you. • There’s always a superstar in your life, but don’t get caught up in his hype and don’t compare yourself to him. You have a role on the team. Fill that role to the best of your ability and let the running back worry about getting in the end zone. • I enjoy watching a game, but the outcome doesn’t really affect my life that much. Do you know who is affected? The players. Don’t be a spectator Christian. Get in the game, but don’t aim to be the quarterback or the coach. Leave the play-calling to God. • The locker room and the huddle are important. Standing or sitting in that circle is where you’re held

accountable and where you get the information you need about the next play. In church life, these are small groups. Don’t skip them. If you do, you won’t know what’s going on, and you won’t grow. • Wear the uniform. You don’t have to guess who the players are at a game. Do people have to guess you’re
a Christian? You don’t have to wear a cliché Christian t-shirt to tell people what you believe; in fact, you’re probably better off if you don’t. But, your life should show it. Also, there’s no better representation of the full armor of God than a football uniform. Is your mind protected? Your body? Your weak spots? They had better be. Do you have on the right cleats to stand your ground? Facing the Giants is the second film from the Kendrick Brothers, who also made Flywheel, Courageous, Fireproof, War Room, and the just-released Overcomer. If you haven’t seen them, I highly recommend them. Rather than bingewatching Netflix this weekend, try binging on the Kendrick brothers. You won’t regret it.

Act Your Age! urning 45 this year has been an eye-opener for me because I see so many changes in my body and my mind. This old gal needs a tune-up! Growing older is a blessing, but it also is a process that I am still trying to become accustomed to. I have aches and pains that I didn’t have five years ago, my hair is turning gray, and I have wrinkles, age spots, varicose veins, and health issues. I’m not feeling like a spring chicken. I look around me, and all I see are gimmicks and products to improve all of the problems I listed above. We have become fixed on the outer man while the inner man is dying. I looked to the Word for guidance, and here I am reminded: “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16). Although I do not feel as I did 20 years ago, the Lord reminds me that my purpose isn’t to fix what men see on the outside but rather to grow inwardly in love and through the guidance of my Heavenly Father. It is becoming less important to people to live as God has designed us to do. More and more, people are feeding into self-love. That isn’t of God! John 13:34 says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” He didn’t say love one another just once but twice in this Scripture. So, how important is it that we love ourselves? 2 Timothy 3:2, 4 says, “For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy…lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.” I started this article with the outward woman and how she is falling apart. Although the Lord has instructed me to take care of the outer body, for it is my temple, He most importantly wants me to take care of the inward woman. This is a daily decision: to seek God and His Word and to share His love with others. I fail; I’m not perfect. It’s easy to get caught up in what the world has to offer. But, isn’t it time we got back to helping our neighbors? Matthew 22:37-39 says, “Jesus said to him,

“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” When women are constantly having plastic surgery and botox to feel better about themselves, well, that yells out to me that there is a greater problem in their lives in order for them to feel that inadequate. The fulfillment of God’s love and grace should far exceed any plastic surgery.
I was looking at family photos all the way back to when my grandparents were young. In all the pictures, people actually looked their age. No one was trying to improve their outer appearance; it was accepted. The Bible presents growing old as a normal, natural part of life. It’s supposed to be an honor to grow old, for it is accompanied by increased wisdom and experience. In Proverbs 16:31, it says, “The silver-haired head is a crown of glory, if it is found in the way of righteousness.” I’m not saying to just let go of your outer self but instead to recognize that the most important part of you is your inner self. Feed your soul and live an abundant life in Jesus Christ.

ach one of us is unique, but have you ever thought your friends do things better? You didn’t make the
captain of the cheer-leading squad, but another member did. Maybe you would like to look like someone else. Friends might even pressure you to look a certain way. It is important to realize no one has a background or body shape quite like yours. In short, the opportunities that you have had make you uniquely you. Our relationship with God doesn’t rest alone in what we look like or how we perform in life. You were created to be you. God loved you so much He made you in His image and made you wonderfully complex (Psalm 139:14). His workmanship is marvelous. Some of us struggle with acceptance. Remind yourself you weren’t meant to be like someone else. God can use your uniqueness to show others a better way to do something or how to treat others with a loving heart. As Christian teenagers, you’re a light in a dark world, a brilliant beacon to your generation. What friend needs you to share the light of Christ? The Bible tells us that no one lights a lamp and then puts it under God does.

Don’t Make Your Spouse Feel Like “Dis” arriage is a sacred covenant, a holy relationship between a man and a woman that was instituted by God. Even if a person is not married, he or she needs to understand God’s plan and purpose for marriage because marriage is about more than the couple saying, “I do.” Marriage is God’s idea. When I first got married, it was something you would have thought only happened in fairy tales. We met on a dating site and had an instant connection, but there was a huge issue; we were many miles apart. However, we knew we wanted to continue to pursue the relationship. Both of us were head over heels in love with one another. It was so intense that it got to the point where my mom always threatened to pinch me to get me “out of la-la land,” as she called it. Brian eventually proposed, and we were excited to start our life together as one in Georgia. The love we shared truly radiated from us to others. As we have journeyed the last five years together, there have been times when things have not always been like a fairytale, and I am sure I am not alone on this one. How many times during the course of your marriage have either one of you felt like one was not treating the other nicely? Better yet, how many times have one of you felt like you were not treating each other as God would have you treat one another? When we have dis-cord in our marriage, how is it possible that we can see marriage as a good and beautiful thing? More often than not, we probably see it as a curse, a burden, a bad decision, etc. Let’s just set the record straight now and get our minds right. News flash, ladies; He did not make that man He gifted you to be your footstool. Men, He did not make that woman he gifted you to be your footstool. So, take your foot off! Oh, how I hear the grumbling. Do you need Scripture to back this up? Here you go. Colossians 3:18: “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.” Do so by making sure you do these things daily: do not withhold yourself, speak kind words, evaluate your friendships, forgive your husband, and build your home.

Colossians 3:19: “Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.” Guard and protect your wife’s heart. How do you wholeheartedly protect your wife’s heart and show her that you love her? Study your wife’s heart, listen, and know what the issues are that are troubling her. Pray for your wife. Gently bring truth and support to your wife. Show her constant support about those particular issues, and that will speak volumes to her that you are in her corner, you are not judging her, and you are on her team. Men, a word of caution—avoid criticism and critique because that will never go well. She cannot feel your judgment of her. There’s a difference between being critical of her and being supportive and speaking the truth in love.
Always remember to show constant support for your wife. Marriage: it truly is a team effort, ladies and gentleman. In closing, the next time you are tempted to make your spouse feel any of these ways, go to God and ask Him to help you because there is no reason for anyone to feel dis way. It is a weapon the enemy will use to destroy your marriage: dis-respected, dis-missed, dis-trust, dis-satisfied, dis-appointed, dis-couraged, and dis-posable.

Remembering Our First Home

eptember is a time when school is in full swing and football games are about to begin. It is a time to pull out our jackets from the closets and watch the leaves begin to change from
green to gold. It is a time for harvesting produce, like potatoes, from the garden and preparing the soil for the cold of winter. We know the times and seasons for harvesting produce, but do we know the times and seasons for harvesting the people in our lives for God’s kingdom? Jesus said in John 4:35-36, “Do you not say,
‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! And he who reaps receives wages and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.” Be alert to the nudge of the Holy Spirit, and always be ready to reap a harvest for God, for you do not know whom God may bring across your path today.
Ingredients • 4 large baking potatoes
• ¼ c. unsalted butter, melted • ¼ c. olive oil
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• ½ tsp. freshly ground salt
• 1½ tsp. fresh thyme leaves, minced

Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 400ºF. 2. Cut unpared potatoes into ¼-inch slices. Overlap the slices in a 9x13 baking dish. 3. In a small bowl, combine the butter and oil. Brush this mixture on the potato slices, and pour any remaining mixture over the potatoes. 4. Sprinkle the potatoes with the garlic, salt, and thyme. 5. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until potatoes are done and browned on the edges. Variation: Substitute rosemary for the thyme. Tip: If you wish to prepare the potatoes ahead of time, slice and place them in cold water until you are ready to bake them. Then, drain them very well, blot them dry, and proceed with the recipe.
