T
his year more than 10 million florists will send flowers to honor mothers and 150 million cards will be delivered to mothers in more than 46 countries around the world. Mother’s Day is something to which everyone can relate. Whether biological, adoptive, stepmother, or godmother, the influence of a mother reaches across regions, religions, castes, cultures, genders, and every financial status with a guiding force that molds and shapes the lives and personalities of her children. There could not be a more universal celebration. But long before Mother’s Day was designated on the calendar of any country, God signed a resolution that commanded us to honor our mothers. He wrote it with his finger on tablets of stone. We know it as the fifth of the Ten Commandments: “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you” (Ex. 20:12 NIV). The following is taken from an anonymous poem that describes the things mothers teach their children just by being an excellent example: When you thought I wasn’t looking . . . I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I wanted to paint another one. I saw you feed a stray cat, and I thought it was good to be kind to animals. I heard you say a prayer, and I believed there is a God I could always talk to. I saw tears in your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it’s all right to cry. When you thought I wasn’t looking, I looked . . . and wanted to say thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn’t looking. A few years ago when I wrote the book, Gifts of Grace in Women of Faith, I made this dedication: “To the memory of my mother, Leona Gore, who was capable of sharing a bathroom with five daughters and still make it to church on time; who transformed small, mundane parsonages into homes we could call our own; whose creative sewing made homemade dresses look like designer fashions; who always put others’ needs before her own, thereby teaching me by example how to share God’s gift of grace with others.” It is a privilege to honor mothers not only on Mother’s Day, but every day of the year. A Special Gift for Mom
N
by Danielle Jennings
othing says Mother’s Day like a sentimental, handmade gift. From handprints in clay to handcrafted cards,
Mother’s Day is not complete without those gifts that are made with love. It is also not complete without flowers. Any type of flower, as long as it is given with love, is never a bad flower! So why not create flowers out of handprints? What a special way to deliver those flowers to Mom!
What you’ll need: • White sheet of paper
• Green paint for the stems • 4 other colors of paint • 1 color for the ribbon
• 3 colors that you want your flowers to be (Mom’s favorite colors would look nice!) • Paintbrushes
• Sponge to apply paint to hands!
How to:
• Apply the first color of paint to one of your hands • Press hand down firmly on piece of paper
• Apply second color of paint to the other hand
• Press down firmly overlapping the thumb on the first hand • Next, paint the stems with green paint from the palms to the bottom edge of the paper • Allow those hands and stems to dry for a few minutes • Apply the third color of paint to one of your hands, and overlap the other two handprints in the middle. • Your fingers should be right about where the thumbs are • Press hand firmly down on the paper
• Paint a green stem from that palm downward to the edge of the page. • Using your 4th color, paint a ribbon around the stems where they come together. • Let dry and present to Mom on Mother’s Day!

Gò0dNews for Men
Growing Mentors for the Master United by a belief that God’s Word and a band of brothers is a priority.
I
By Bill Fortenberry
t's 5:30 in the morning. One-by-one the men arrive, most grabbing a Styrofoam cup of coffee before settling around one of three tables. At 5:45, they are asked to stand, Bibles in hand, and recite the familiar words: "This is my Bible. It is God's inerrant Word. It is my most valuable earthly possession. I will, therefore, make it a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path, and I will hide its words in my heart that I might not sin against God." Returning to their seats, the men spend the next hour reciting verses they memorized the previous week and talking what they learned during the week. This same scene plays out at 6 p.m. each Monday and at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesdays. The men are from different churches, different stages in life, and different ages, but they are united by a belief that God's Word and a band of brothers should be a priority. This is M3—Mentoring Men for the Master, and it is open to any man seeking something more than the status quo. The only requirements are a commitment to be transparent, to make an earnest effort to memorize Scripture, to keep private the conversations with other men, and to regularly attend the weekly M3 meetings. The primary principle is the same at work in the gym: You get out of M3 what you put into it. Each week focuses on one of 10 "Imperatives": • Internalizing the Word • Infilling of the Holy Spirit • Intimacy with the Father • Intentional involvement in the world mission of Christ • Interrelating with others to share your life • Investing your money with the Lord
12 // May 2017
• Identification with, support of, and service in a local church • Intense devotion to one's family, especially his wife • Intentional discipline of the physical body • Instant repentance and cleansing from all sin. When you talk about these kinds of topics with other men, it doesn't take long for friendships to form. I have cried with, prayed with, and laughed with the men who share my table. We've worshiped together, eaten breakfast or lunch together, and shown up at the hospital for one another. I trust them, and they trust me. The founder and developer of M3 is a now elderly North Carolina pastor whose challenge has stayed with me: You know the Pledge of Allegiance, the Preamble to the Constitution or the national anthem, but can you recite the most basic tenets of our faith? Do you know the Ten Commandments by memory? The Beatitudes? I did not, and that fact suddenly seemed wrong. This book is my guidebook. It is alive and sharper than any two-edged sword. It is God's own word, and it cannot return void. Why hadn't I committed these to memory? If I needed a reason to join these men, this is enough. I think of it as a workout for the soul. Ringtone Misery Turns to Morning Glory
I
Casting my fears and concerns on the One who cares for the sparrow−and me! by Sheila Bird
’ve never been a morning person so when my cell phone alarm went off, I wanted to hide it under the mattress and go back to sleep. It didn’t matter what I was going through, how I felt, or how much sleep I had the night before; I could always count on that relentless little ringtone to force me out of my cocoon of blankets and into the light of day. This particular day I was so overwhelmed by the cares of life that I would have postponed the sunrise if that were possible. Reluctantly I dragged myself out of bed, muttered a half-hearted prayer, and got ready for work. The things I had left undone the day before and those that lay ahead of me were all I could focus on. My husband drove me to work that day. He is one of those awful morning people. Before he has even had breakfast, he is chattering away about everything under the sun. I, on the other hand, don’t speak until it becomes absolutely necessary. Since I didn’t take the time to dwell on the Lord, who so graciously gave me another day to live; I began to cast my cares on my husband. I figured he could handle my insecurities. So I said to him, “I don’t know why in the world the Bible tells us not to worry about tomorrow. I am not sure it’s even humanly possible.” He calmly agreed with me that it is difficult to hand our cares over to the Lord. He assured me that God knows what is best for us even when we don’t.
14 // May 2017
He said that no matter how we interpret the scripture about tomorrow, that life will go on. So I agreed with him that everything would be alright, even though I still questioned how. As we arrived in the parking lot where I worked, everything was still dripping wet from a brief summer rain. Sunrays were piercing a light fog that was slowly lifting from the ground. I opened the car door and heard a little bird singing. It was loud and strong, happy and carefree. The little bird seemed completely unshaken by the wind and the rain that had passed through just hours before sunrise. In my typical morning disposition I said, “Listen to that bird. What’s he got to sing about anyway?” And in my husband’s atypical, lighthearted way he answered, “Maybe his bills are paid and he has no thought for tomorrow.” As I walked down the sidewalk, conviction fluttered in my heart like the wings of that little bird. His song became impossible to ignore. It caused me to turn my eyes and ears toward heaven. As I did, my aches and pains, worries and cares lost their grip on me. I decided to join the little bird in song. I think it went like this: “I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free, for His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.” Sheila Bird writes from her home in Cleveland, TN. She is a published author and is passionately pursuing the ministry of encouragement through free-lance writing.

understand that many dental offices are intimidating with the machinery and tools that are used, so Dr. Blackmon’s office makes a point of normalizing the terminology and making all the information understandable and relaxed. Their office offers many treatment options, so they don’t corner you into only one choice for your needs. They understand that each case is different and has different possibilities for how to treat and care for it. They also offer 3rd party financing for larger cases. They participate with many dental benefit plans and file your insurance as a courtesy to their patients. Dr. Blackmon’s office goes the extra mile to help you feel at ease and secure in their office. They provide all the cosmetic procedures available to allow their patients choices on restoring their smiles. Times are changing and technology is changing, and Dr. Blackmon’s office stays up-to- date with the latest technologies and ideas in helping restore and enhance beautiful smiles. Many patients avoid correcting their smile because of the high costs, so Dr. Blackmon’s office provides 3rd party financing through Care Credit and other financial institutions. Dr. Blackmon says, “An investment in your smile is the best investment a person can make. It is the best return on your money because a beautiful smile can
make a lasting impression.” They will work with you to make the dream of a new smile become a reality. Dr. Blackmon takes pride in providing excellent work to all of his patients, but his primary focus is his family, which consists of his wife, Robin, daughter, Abby, who is a freshman at University of Alabama, and his son, Reid, who is a junior at Darlington. He believes dentistry has afforded him the opportunity to have quality time with his family. Dr. Blackmon never wanted a career that took him away from his family and their activities. Working at Dr. Blackmon General Dentistry has allowed Dr. Blackmon to attends his kids events and have dinner with his family. He says the Rome community has been a great place to raise his kids and make friends. The community that surrounds him and his family is the same community that he serves every day at work. He considers his patients family and friends, because that is exactly what they are every other day of the week. Dr. Blackmon and his wonderful staff invite you to schedule a consultation so they can show you how they can meet your smile needs. ave you set your goals for the new year? Goals of any type need to be challenging without being overwhelming. If you need help crafting
a few healthy goals for the new year, the health and fitness experts at Bradley Wellness Center can help.
Drink More Water
Our bodies consist of 60 percent water. Among
other functions, water • Regulates your body temperature • Cushions your joints • Keeps your mouth, eyes, and nose moist • Helps your body process nutrients • Flushes out waste products • Helps to improve your energy level. Experts recommend that most of us should drink six to eight eight-ounce glasses of water each day.
Remember to Rest
Most of us don’t need to be reminded to rest!
However, it can sometimes be tempting to continue exercising even though our bodies are exhausted. If you haven’t exercised in a while, you should consider alternating your active days with rest days. As you build your stamina, you may choose to have just one rest day per week.
Focus on Form
Learning to use the correct form while exercising
can help you to steer clear of future injuries. Bradley Wellness Center employs six certified personal trainers and three fitness consultants. They want you to achieve your goals and will help you with any questions you may have. All members of Bradley Wellness Center are offered a complimentary personal training assessment.
Eat Healthy
According to the American Heart Association, a
healthy diet consists of five servings of vegetables, four servings of fruits, six servings of grains, three servings of dairy, and two servings of protein each day. Bradley Wellness Center has a registered dietitian on staff to help you learn more about how eating a proper diet can help you meet your health goals. All members are offered a complimentary nutrition consultation. Just ask the associate at the front desk for an appointment.
Try New Things
If you’re new to exercising, everything is
new! However, if you exercise on a regular basis, it can be easy to become bored with your routine. Here’s a challenge: try one new activity each month. This is a great way to introduce variety into your routine and reduce the chances of exercise burnout. An easy way to build variety into your schedule is to try fitness classes.

Enjoying God’s Creation at The Harbor—a memory care facility. by David Duke
othing tastes better on a hot summer day than a fresh tomato sandwich made with tomato, white bread, mayonnaise, salt, and pepper. This is especially the case when the tomato is grown in your own backyard. Just ask our residents in The Harbor at The Renaissance Marquis. The Harbor is a memory care facility where an emphasis in reminiscing allows the residents to function and talk about the past as if it were just yesterday. Most of our residents grew up in the country on a farm, had family members who lived on a farm, or had a garden of their own. Each spring, the residents help me start the garden in our greenhouse. We plant a variety of seeds; tomato, squash, green beans, okra, watermelon, pumpkin, and corn. Some seeds are planted in the greenhouse, while others do better by planting them directly into the ground.
28 // May 2017
The residents’ favorite garden is a 42-inch raised garden bed. The residents enjoy circling the garden bed, helping till the soil, and planting the seedlings. While we’re gardening, they always seem to begin telling stories about what type of garden their parents had and how their father would prepare the soil of their garden. We check the garden several times during the week, and I always have a couple of residents who want to help water the plants. They truly enjoy watching the plants grow and get so excited when they begin to see blooms and actual vegetables forming. The most frequent question is, “When will the tomatoes be ripe?” The larger plants such as watermelon, pumpkin, and corn are planted directly into the ground to allow them room to run and grow tall. Last year we experimented with a hydroponic “Tower Garden,” which
allows the vegetables to grow without any soil by adding only nutrients to the water. This was new to the residents and it amazed them how plants could grow without soil. Even the residents who don’t wish to get their hands dirty still enjoy sitting outside and watching the garden grow. We also enjoy a variety of flowers from spring until fall. The colors are breathtaking throughout the entire season. While the residents sit outside, they often make comments like, “Just imagine that God created all this beauty just for us to enjoy.” The old hymns are soon to follow their comments. They enjoy singing, “I Come to the Garden Alone,” “Amazing Grace How Sweet the Sound,” or “Victory in Jesus.” How humbling it is to serve the residents at The Harbor in such a unique way—“In Our Own Backyard.” David W. Duke is the Harbor life enrichment coordinator at Renaissance Marquis in Rome, GA.

Lemons to Lemonade
I
Respecting the right of your spouse to disagree and open your heart to accept another point of view could have a respectful conflict resolution. by Carl Corser
've heard so many times from older couples who say they have never had a feud. Is that really true? Maybe they have sugar-coated reality. Disagreements? Not me and my wife; we don't have them. We just have highly expressive exchanges of words. All couples will sooner or later have conflict. How they approach the resolution is what makes a marriage relationship successful or end up in the divorce courts. Life itself applies enough pressure to our marriages, so heaven forbid that we complicate things with unwise handling of the lemons life serves. Yes, lemonade is so refreshing as we relax in a lawn chair under a big shade tree on a beautiful spring afternoon. How refreshing it can be when we can have peaceful and respectful conflict resolution in our marriages by turning lemons to lemonade. Resolution is so sweet after a bitter conflict.

32 // May 2017
Please, please, please, start off on the right foot. Respect the right of your spouse to disagree. Express your real concerns and not petty little unrealistic feelings. Find ways to share common goals and interests that unite you as a couple instead of causing division. Open your heart to accept your spouse’s point of view. Who knows it might shock your resolving activity. Listen carefully to your spouse’s concerns and proposals to resolve your conflict. Understand the priority or key issues involved in the conflict. Rabbit chasing should not be allowed in the resolving of a marriage conflict. Think about the possible consequences that would result if the conflict is never resolved. Imagine possible alternative solutions to the present conflict. Think outside of the conflict “box.” Always be willing to offer reasonable compromises that will really make the lemonade so, so sweet and refreshing. When we are being reasonable with each other, conflict-resolving results will be lasting. Negotiate fair and balanced agreements together that will be acceptable to both individuals involved. These agreements then can be realistically kept, therefore taking the old sour lemons in your marriage and making sweet lemonade that refreshes your marriage relationship. Oh, how sweet it is to see a couple’s marriage relationship refreshed.
