Finding Control en, It is pretty easy to fall under the false assumption that we have complete control over our lives when things seem to be going our way.

But when uncertainty comes, what happens to our feelings of control?

Epictetus said in Enchiridion, 1, “Of all existing things some are in our power and others are not in our power.

In our power are thought, impulse, will to get and will to avoid, and in a word, everything which is of our own doing. Things not in our power include the body, property,

reputation, office, and, in a word, everything which is not our own doing.”

Many of you may be familiar with the well-known Serenity Prayer, which conveys the same idea.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. The courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

That prayer was written by a theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr, in 1934, and in those few words, he managed to reflect a wisdom that is common to Christian beliefs.

In the above quote from Epictetus, we can see he is dividing the world into two groups: things under our complete control and things not completely under our control.

To find enjoyment and fulfillment in life, it is crucial that we use our mental energy to focus on those things that are under our complete control, and viewing all other things with indifference.

We calm our minds by learning to want only what is in our complete control. If we learn to do this, in a way, we will always get what we want.

So the question is, “What is in our complete control?”

First on Epictetus’ list is thought which is to say, in modern terms, our judgments or opinions on any particular matter.

Next, we have impulse, where he means our impulse to act, but he doesn’t mean in a subconscious way, like pulling away from something hot. What he is relating impulse to is what happens from the first step of thought. If we think something is good, we will want it. If we think something is bad, we will avoid it.

Then we have the will to get and the will to avoid. We decide if a thing is worth our time, effort, money, and/or energy.

These three things are what are under our complete control and the things we should train to master all three.

These things can still be influenced by outside forces and by internal dialogues. But ultimately, they are under our control because we can make a conscious decision to ignore others’ opinions or we can quiet the internal dialogues.

Now, we will look at the things not under our control.

These are our body, property, reputation, position, and, in a word, everything which is not our own doing. This list is basically all things outside of our conscious mind.

We get sick sometimes, no matter how healthy we eat or how much we exercise. Property can be stolen, damaged, or taken by natural disasters. Our reputation can be hurt by others that we have no opportunity to influence. Jobs can be terminated for reasons beyond our control.

Don’t require your peace and happiness to rest on anything that is not completely in your control. When you do, you give up your happiness to chance. And, when you play this game, the odds are always in the house’s favor.

In early July, I had an ectopic pregnancy, and I was forced to rely on Scripture and my faith in God for comfort. My husband and I found out we were expecting our first child. We were shocked and excited, and in the short few days that we had this news, we talked about names, nursery colors, and how we would tell our families.

I was alone when I got the initial news that the baby was in my tube. Due to Covid-19, my husband wasn’t allowed to be in the room with me.

I sat in the room waiting for another doctor to come in when I was reminded of Hebrews 13:5. We are never truly alone, and we are never forsaken. My heart was crushed, but I spoke out loud, “God, no matter what, you are still a good God.” The entire experience is still a whirlwind to think about.

What Now?

ife can and will change. That is what life is about, as things are always changing. We are born, we crawl, we walk, we run, and then we sometimes slow back down

to a crawl. That is life here on this earth.

The Bible says in Psalm 90:9-10, “For all our days are

passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.”

My great-grandfather lived to be a 104. He was born in 1884, the same year that our church was established in the community he lived in. My great-grandfather saw a lot in his lifetime. I do remember his great love and his great faith in His God, who sustained him during those 104 years. I remember how to fish as he taught me, using a cane pole and lots of patience. I remember how to watch out for his sharp pocketknife. He trusted me to hold it one day, and by him in so many ways and things in a day’s time working on his small farm.

Back then, I remember them saying that they would make their way to town and sit around the courthouse to visit after a hard week’s work with their friends and neighbors.

You might see them whittling or trading their knives if they found one that they could not leave town without. Once again, I thank God for those good memories. Those years have swiftly passed by, and lots of things have changed.

As we look back on our lives, we see that things haven’t always gone as we had planned. Things happened that we didn’t plan on. Our world is turned upside down. How do we survive? We go in survival mode, and as Christians, we hold onto God with all the strength that we have. When our strength is gone, we rely on His! The Bible has so many promises, and God is the great promise keeper.

Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

I am so thankful that when it seems everything is out of control, the sun still comes up in the morning. The birds are still singing, and their Creator cares for not only them but for you and me also.

Matthew 6:26: “Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your Heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?”

Hold onto God and let Him help you each step of the way. Our steps may get slower as we age, but I pray that we stay on the path God would have us go on.

Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

What now? Stay on the path God is leading you on.

It’s your personal history. Good, bad, or indifferent, you have ownership of it, whether you’re able to accept it or not. For anyone contemplating marriage, knowing the personal history of your future spouse is very important.

Let’s add age into the equation and how it affects our marriage pathways. A young individual’s personal history is much shorter than an older individual’s history. That still does not minimize the importance of sharing your personal history with your future spouse. Understanding your spouse’s personal history before you enter into your marriage relationship will help to eliminate many times of frustration and misunderstandings after you’ve exchanged those marriage vows. Questions should be asked courteously, and responses truthfully given, so you will know each other as well as possible when married. An older individual’s personal history is much more complicated, so many more questions and responses will be required to know each other prior to marriage. Marriage is difficult enough without adding to the stress from the result of poor communication habits formed prior to marriage.

Why should I write an article such as this? Why are you reading this article? Things happen in our lives unexpectedly and also as a result of our poor behavior. If marriages can be saved or made easier from the provoking of your thought, consideration, and understanding of these words, then I have been successful in making a difference in your life and marriage. Please be encouraged to use your courtship time wisely. It certainly will be a blessing after marriage when you suddenly learn something new about your spouse. You just might be a little more understanding.

If these thoughts and words are given considerable consideration and God is placed into the center of your relationship, then your new marriage should be successful.

Deaths of spouses do occur, and so do divorces. These are facts of life. We all make mistakes. God has provided forgiveness for our mistakes. Ask for it and allow God’s healing to begin

From Darkness To Light

“T

o give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the

way of peace” (Luke 1:79).

I lived with severe anxiety and depression

until I was 33. God instantly delivered me when I was born again in Batam, Indonesia.

That was more than 20 years ago.

I have experienced deep sadness and even heartbreak since then. The difference now is that I know that God is with me. No matter what happens around me, I have deep and settled joy in my heart that is not dependent upon circumstances or upon the actions or inactions of others. I completely trust God with my life.

2 Corinthians 4:6: “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

This joy is not conditional. This joy is a gift from God. He can make a way out of no way. He can move us from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light.

Today’s devotion is to share that no matter how dark it seems, there is new life and hope in Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:9: “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.”

Homemade Bread

was baking homemade bread tonight and as I started kneading the dough I began thinking about how I still had to let it rise for an hour before I could even bake it... (this is how impatient I am) and that’s why I never make homemade bread, it’s so much easier to just buy it at the store and be done!

As I was almost done, a verse came to mind in the Bible.

John 6:35, “Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life.

Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.“ This verse made me think how sometimes in life I/we want the fast bread of life... Quick prayers, fast Bible study, not setting aside the time I should with Him! Instead of taking the hardy, warm yummier bread... praying with out ceasing, studying his word, worshiping him in all we do, being the his hands and feet, feasting on him everyday!

We want quick, when he is there offering us to have a feast...all of Him! His word says he is our bead of life and that we will never go hungry, we have the choice everyday, hour, minutes to always feast on his word yet we settle for a fast snack.

Ingredients • Warm water: (105-115 degrees)- to activate the yeast.

• Active Dry yeast: Instant or rapid rise yeast can be substituted.

• Granulated sugar or honey: the sugar is used to “feed” the yeast and tenderize the bread.

• Salt: to enhance flavor • Oil: Vegetable or canola oil, or melted butter could be substituted • Flour: Bread Flour or All-Purpose Flour can both be used with no changes to the recipe. The exact amount of flour used will vary depending on different factors (altitude/ humidity etc.). What matters is the texture of the dough.

It should be smooth and pull away from the sides of the bowl. It’s important not to add too much flour or your bread will be dense. The dough should be just slightly sticky when touched with a clean finger.

Instructions

1. Proof the yeast: In a large bowl or stand mixer add the yeast, water and a pinch of the sugar or honey. Allow to rest for 5-10 minutes until foaming and bubbly. (This is called “proofing” the yeast, to make sure it is active. If it doesn’t foam, the yeast is no good, and you need to start over with fresh yeast).

2. Prepare the dough: Add remaining sugar or honey, salt, oil, and 3 cups of flour. Mix to combine. Add another cup of flour and mix to combine. With the mixer running add more flour, ½ cup at a time, until the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl.

3. Knead the dough: Mix the dough for 5 minutes on medium speed (or knead with your hands on a lightly floured surface, for 5-8 minutes). The dough should be smooth and elastic, and slightly stick to a clean finger, but not be overly sticky.

4. First Rise: Grease a large bowl with oil or cooking spray and place the dough inside. Cover with a dish towel or plastic wrap and allow to rise in a warm place* until doubled in size (about 1 1/2 hours).

5. Punch the dough down really well to remove air bubbles.

6. Divide into two equal portions. Shape each ball into long logs and place into greased loaf pans.

7. Second rise: Spray two pieces of plastic wrap with cooking spray and lay them gently over the pans. Allow dough to rise again for about 45 minutes to one hour, or until risen 1 inch above the loaf pans.

8. Bake: Adjust oven racks to lower/middle position. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Bake bread for about 30-33 minutes, or until golden brown on top. Give the top of a loaf a gentle tap; it should sound hollow.
